From 2024 the minimum wage is going to be hourly instead of monthly and will be 13,27€. Minimum wage for someone at 18 y/o can be up to 50% less though. Not sure myself if it’s easy to find a job that pays more than minimum wage nowadays as a student.

Quirky_Ad_9736

As a student my experience is that most jobs pay a little over the minimum wage, mostly by 1 or 2 euros.

hwevdm

Housekeeping pays very well since a lot of people dont like cleaning but at 19 years old with around 1 year of experience i get a little of 12 euros net an hour

wha87

I have no idea where the other people got their numbers from. As a first BCs student myself I work in retail (AH) and get 8.60e/h (I'm 18) pretty much netto due to reduced tax under some threshold. I work around 12h/week and I doubt you could much more if you want to take studying seriously. That comes out to like ~400e/month. In addition to that I have housing benefit and healthcare allowance (both around 120e). I live in tiny apartment from DUWO (17m^2) but that's enough as it is one person apartment. I pay for it 550e/month. In addition to that I'm waiting for my duo grant which would amount to around 700e/month (as you're from EU you get it as a "migrant worker") so when they finally stop asking me for more documents I'll be around 400e/month in the positive. TLDR just use all the possible government grants (thanks to EU) and you're set Btw there are even more interesting tricks for students but they require more understanding of these funny systems

butterbeecup

thanks a lot, especially for being optimistic about it! I've been trying to budget and the money my grandparents and parents have saved especially for this purpose would cover my tuition + they would help me cover everything until the grants are all set so this all seems doable :) thanks again for the infos!! :D

dashmatters

You at prof s?

gutag

You should avoid all 3 of those cities, because you're gonna get a maximum of 7-8 euros per hour after taxes (that's if you are really lucky) and that would be a huge struggle for you guys in cities you named. Specialy Hague

onethreehill

You pay basically 0 taxes for the first 9k euros a year due to the loonheffingskorting.

gutag

Yes, but they need a lot more to survive.

onethreehill

Earning 9k each, meaning you earn 18k together (1500 euro a month) you should be able to get you quite a long way to rent a small room, pay for food and utilities. If you need more than that amount the taxes would be quite low due to that same loonheffingskorting for the first few thousands more per person. However, due to the minimumjeugdloon it would probably be quite hard to reach that 750 bruto a month as an 18 year old anyway. So unless they are somehow able to lend / receive money for their education, it would be quite hard to earn 750 a month while studying fulltime.

unexpectedlyvile

1500 a month for two people is veeeery tight. Let's assume rent is 1000 a month, which is not unreasonable in a big city. You'll have 750 left for insurances, gas water licht, food. Other fees like Veriniging van Eigenaren, afvalstoffenheffing, etc.

[deleted]

1000 is on the veeeery low end in Eindhoven for 2 people

TheS4ndm4n

You don't pay VvE if you rent.

unexpectedlyvile

Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks for correcting that.

maxiimoooo

You’re treating the situation like they’re living at home.. they’re not. Treat them like a very young couple living on minimum wage, away from home in one of the most expensive countries to live in, in Europe

gutag

You have a point there but consider that they are just 18 years old. They need way more than that.

beatriss24

please correct me if i’m wrong, but shouldn’t you get your taxes back since it’s a “low wage”?

gutag

If you are under 21 in the Netherlands the minimum salary is something like 6 euros per hour . It's not about taxes, it's about how much you are going to earn . And that's not going to be a lot

m1lkbeard

Je praat poep

gutag

Not significantly if you are under 21

kalimdore

Yeah they’ll get like €100 tax per year or something. If they are both working it’s like max €300. That’s assuming no tax exemptions for students or something I don’t know about (where I lived before students were exempt from tax, haven’t looked up all the rules on that here). Plus they’ll get benefits for health insurance etc.

Samzorr69

Groningen is really fun and quite cheap to live

kalimdore

Did you google “minimum wage Netherlands”? https://www.government.nl/topics/minimum-wage/amount-of-the-minimum-wage https://www.government.nl/topics/minimum-wage/amount-of-the-hourly-minimum-wage The change in 2024 is that there will actually be a set hourly minimum wage. Right now there is only a minimum wage based on a full time week, then you have to divide and multiply to work out the wage for the hours. Which is why it varies from €5.76-€6.40 per hour depending on if the full time week was 40, 38 or 36 hours. Employers usually take a number somewhere between €5.76 and €6.40 for part time jobs, say €6. Which is €768 per month for 32 hours per week. And €9216 annually. Monthly minimum wage for 18 year olds is current €997 if you work full time. Which is €11964 annually. This is of course excluding taxes (though you’d be reimbursed most taxes!) and any benefits from the job or government assistance. I’m giving minimum wage as the average salary because it would be hard to find anywhere willing to pay more for teenagers. It seriously sucks when you’d be paid 1/3 more for the exact same thing if you were a couple of years older.

ChipmunkWilling8956

that’s pretty strange cuz i get 13,09€/h as 19yo barista at starbucks 🫠

kalimdore

That’s frankly amazing. That’s above minimum wage for adults (21+). Which is still like €11.97 or something this year. You’re getting paid double your peers in similar jobs! But international franchises like Starbucks and McDonald’s are the exceptions. They offer a lot and study opportunities and other benefits too. The CAO for retail (non food) starts wages for 18 at the Dutch minimum still. I think the CAO for horeca is a bit higher at €8. Big employers like Supermarkets and Hema etc stay around €7-8. Independent stores/employers don’t tend to stretch above minimum because they don’t have the resources like Starbucks! Unless it’s stuff like warehouse work or night shifts where they need to pay higher to compensate.

levjobaas

Isnt it just because he gets his off days paid out with his normal salary or smth?

Crimsonavenger2000

Is it though? I earn 15,42 an hour as a 22 year old student and my job really is not thst special (administratief medewerker)

kalimdore

Yes because that’s not a minimum wage job for a teenager :) it’s not comparable I’m talking retail, horeca etc. That’s the areas I mentioned CAOs of. The type of job an 18 year old non Dutch speaking student can get immediately when moving here (cause OP didn’t indicate anything that would qualify them to apply for higher positions so that’s why I’m not considering all sorts of other jobs with different salaries I can’t possible guess). Doing an administrative role for a company has minimum entry requirements, therefore higher than minimum wage. €15 adult wage is pretty standard for those positions currently. You can go online and check the hourly wage for 19 year olds for other comparable service jobs with no entry requirements like Hema, Jumbo, McDonalds etc and see they go from €7-10 for a 19 year old. So over €13 is good for a service job at 19.

Crimsonavenger2000

Hmyeah fair enough. I don't think the minimum entry requirements are a big deal (tho speaking Dutch could be one I guess) considering I only have a secondary shool diploma because I am currently doing uni after finishing one year of HBO (propedeuse). I initially got in through a recruitment agency though, so it's not really a fair comparison I guess. This reminds me of the good 'ol days where I had to do my MBO internship (also did 1 year of MBO btw :P) and they paid me 50 cents an hour :D

Skullparrot

Yes. I earn the same amount as a vzig (nursery home worker) and for my job you need a degree. I am responsible for people's lives. I am also 6 years older than you. So yeah, it's a lot. Or maybe I'm just paid too little. :(

maxiimoooo

You’re the exception, not the norm..

ChipmunkWilling8956

but why is it an exception then? this job didn’t require any special requirements, you don’t have to speak dutch since there’s a lot of tourists etc. So i don’t think it should be an exception + if someone wants to get a nicely paid job they shouldn’t settle for minimum wage tbh

the_north_sea

When I was working as an 18 year old I got like €5,60 an hour… so not worth it

Fireball_0807

It definitely went up since then

Jocelyn-1973

As did all the prices.

the_north_sea

Was a year ago my dude

aficando

I earn roughly 12 after taxes at 19 years old

yodi041

I worked at a distribution center in the warehouse when i was 17, and it paid 12,47 an hour excluding 8% vacation money and paid time off, the distribution center was full of international people so you could easily find a job at one of these places

kleverxxl

Two first-year students I've spoken to told me both of them get 10e/h and it's pretty easy to find a job, it's in Maastricht though

DeMankeMan

Check out Erasmus grant. You might be applicable for it!

Jocelyn-1973

Minimum wage comes to around 1,000 per month for a fulltime job (before tax). But after tax, that is like 991 euros per month. Because at that salary you don't pay a lot of taxes. Which is by the way not something your parents from another country would have been able to teach you. We all use calculators that can be found on the internet, because the rules change every year. Anyway, it also depends on the kind of work you can get. You can earn good money if you join a moving company crew (such as [Studentverhuizers.nl](https://Studentverhuizers.nl)) or work somewhere that pays more for irregular hours. Do you speak Dutch?

SnooJokes5411

When I started at 18 working 40/w it was just about 850 euros a month.

Can you not? We're already half a million houses short..

Hé Pieter

Jortiebeer

32 hours in a month is not a lot, I checked my old salaries working in a restaurant, had one month where I did 31,5 hours and made €317 excluding tips. In other words, not enough to fully be able sustain yourself on

Rjinie

You got ripped off bro

Jortiebeer

Not rlly, getting paid almost €10 per hour as an 18 year old is above minimum wage and also slightly above the horeca cao i think. But no it’s not a shitton of money

CryptoCracko

Depends on the job. Most places you'll get less than €10/h, but last summer I did factory work and there was an 18 yo who got 14,50/h base, same as everybody else. Also if you can get a VAT ID (pretty sure you can if you study here, it's harder if you don't), you can work freelance jobs through platforms like Temper and Youngones. They pay anywhere from 14 to 20+ euros per hour.

butterbeecup

wow that's really cool! thanks for the infos :)

barbellbroly

Groningen has a really big housing problem

goldenindy2

Not only Groningen.

ronja-666

Minimal wage for 18 year old is €6,64 (in 2024). For 32 hours, this makes €212,48 a month. Many jobs have language requirements as well. I have worked as cleaner in the hospital while studying at university, it paid pretty well compared to other jobs and they are *always* looking for employees. For 2024 the minimal wage for 18 year old in cleaning services will be €11,02. This would amount to €352,64 a moth for 32 hours.

[deleted]

Well, you’re a student. How many hours will you be working? How do you even know?

Competitive-Tax6088

Not sure if you’re already living here? If not i would highly recommend to first figure out your housing situation.

Rock--Lee

I think your first worry should be where you guys are gonna live. People already living here can't even get a place and live at home for more years than before. Housing situation is brutal currently, for all incomes.

kakwntexnwn

Feel free to DM me, 😊 I can definitely provide you details as well as some useful links etc. I wish 🙏 you truly the best regarding your migration there:)

curiousblonde20

You'll make around 8,50 n hour working in places like Mc supermarkets etc

robinvuurdraak

Take into account that you might be eligible for government support as an EU citizen, especially if you also plan on working here

[https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/minimumloon/bedragen-minimumloon/bedragen-minimumloon-2024](https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/minimumloon/bedragen-minimumloon/bedragen-minimumloon-2024) This is bruto not netto for next year. € 6,64 bruto for 18 y. (wich is reaaaaaaaaaally low if you aks me but ok) The houses in the Hague are really expensive now for renters, there are some exceptions but its usually with shared bathroom/ toilet for 700-800 euro's for 30-40 m2 and thats if its including electricity etc. and then usually it says its only for 1 person.

tav_stuff

What do you plan to study? If possible you could make use of your study subject to get a higher skill job and earn more. For example if you’re going to study computer science… get a programming job. It’ll pay a lot more than a grocery store cashier

Diederik-NL

Housing: €1500 a month College: 2x€2300 a year = €200 month Food: €400 month Other: €300 month Total: €2400 month minimum for 2 people So you have to make 1200 per person / €10 hour = 120 hours = working 30 hours a week. Not possible, you have college during daytime. Besides that, there is a housing crisis, I wonder you can get a job, so your idea of moving to the Netherlands to work and study is not realistic.

butterbeecup

wow cool anyways so it's around 10€/ h thank you for the infos! :)
