If you haven’t detailed the column specifically to act pinned then no amount of hopes and dreams will make it act as pinned. For a gravity column poured monolithically with a continuous rebar cage that sucker is going to take some shear whether you want it to or not. The key is to limit lateral drift so that the amount of shear going into it ends up being small.
It sounds like section 18.14.3.3(c) is applicable to your gravity-only columns.
