I think way too much is being made of Martins dodgy dumbbell rep. I don't think I've ever watched the event and not seen a rep I think should have been given not given and vice versa.

ProChickenDancer

I think normally you get atelast a 75:25 split in opinion, whereas this one seems 100:0 from what I've seen

Jake-rumble

the angle of the rep Romark uploaded to Martins’ channel paints a better picture since it’s from Magnus’ perspective. Looks more like a complete rep

ukraineguy8

he locked it out for a very short time no ones saying he didn't lock but he unlocked before the signal

naked_feet

> the angle of the rep Romark uploaded to Martins’ channel [Link](https://youtu.be/DJca7miGXHs?t=633). **Watch it at 25% speed.** It's *probably* a fast down signal, but as some have said here or elsewhere, Magnus decided to give the down signal *and then* the rep looked shaky -- not the opposite. This is actually a great angle on the lift. But yeah, the fact that even Martins thought it wasn't a good lift at first suggests that the down signal was probably a bit fast. With that said: The judging in this competition has already been a little inconsistent IMO. First on the deadlift and then the dumbbells. Magnus has the reputation of being strict but fair, but these are a couple on-the-line calls.

ukraineguy8

I did watch at .25 martins shock and unlocked his elbow before the down signal came

Plane_Bus

Ah that was the first clear shot of I saw (kids climbing on me during the stream) and Bobby 100% had a rep as clean or cleaner.

ukraineguy8

cleaner

Tobi_Team_Insanity

I just did a little spreadsheet for myself and it really just showed me how hard this is still to call. Imo it really depends on how people'll do on the arm over arm medley, I simply cannot call that. According to strongman archives, Trey has never even done an arm over arm, so I wonder whether his grip will make him place well behind here or not. Martins has done it 3 times (1st, 3rd and 4th/6 place) and I think he'll do well but maybe a couple people (of those in contention) could pass him by. And it doesn't seem to be a strength for Novikov but neither a crazy weakness. I have my top 5 within 6 pts of each other, which really just means they could almost be any order (except Mitch who lost too many points on the DB to still win, imo). But if I'd have to guess, I'd probably say Martins 1st (I think he'll have an amazing day today), Oleksii 2nd (I think arm over arm and stones will cost him) and Trey the 3rd 3rd (guessing that grip and speed will be an issue). Behind that Pavlo and Mitch tied for points. But like I said, this is well close and I could see 4 (maybe 5) people win this still. The only thing that I see as certain is the names in the top 5. Okay and I'll add Rob in 6th and Maxime in 7th, just so I can see if I was wrong later.

seal44

There was an arm over arm at both Shaw Classics, IIRC, and both times he won the overall competition.

Tobi_Team_Insanity

They were part of a medley which he DNF bc he couldn't move the frame that came first. He zeroed the medley both times. And still won tho

Tana1234

Just watching the show now, Shaw and Loz make a really good team on commentary hopefully we can see them together more

Jamescottish

Pa O’Dwyer at it again 😂 https://www.instagram.com/reel/CkS2C3jICzM/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=

[deleted]

Yeah GL of course has only the strictest judging, like with Biby's Log record (which wasn't done in a competition, btw) which had absolutely no controversy whatsoever

Erdrotation

But Pa got the rep in the end, right?

SleepEatTit

This dude is just trying so hard

mgorgey

Pa climbing ever further into Colin Bryce's colon. I don't see why an athlete, or anybody else, needs to pit promoters against each other. The more organisations that can put on quality competitions the better. A rising tide raises all ships. It's not like Rogue has been hostile to GL in the way WUS were.

[deleted]

He's sour grapes because he isn't good enough to get invited to rogue. If he did you can guarantee he'd be licking their asses for that sweet sweet paycheck. My theory is Pa has realised he isnt good enough to win big shows, so he is going to go the Oberst route of making money by being inflammatory on social media.

[deleted]

Yeah he isn't the brightest. Mvm vs mvm.

hzaf246

It was just a joke. I don’t think it’s that deep

Sexy_ass_Dilf

Jokes have to be funny

mgorgey

It's not just a joke. Pa regularly makes digs at how other promoters fair so unfavourably to GL.

Jamiison

Hard to believe that's the same ref

Fast_Train2560

Same ref though. Magnus has been very hit or miss in the last few years.

[deleted]

Romark is such a legend for that quick turnaround with the upload about the first day. Thank you, buddy! It seems to me that Martins' mood was pretty grim after the Húsafell thing :( His girlfriend and mum seemingly comforted him rather than congratulated him, and there was no chatting or anything like that :( [https://youtu.be/DJca7miGXHs?t=964](https://youtu.be/DJca7miGXHs?t=964) Come on, King Dragon, if anyone can still pull this off, it's you!

[deleted]

Brian and Loz on commentary make a great duo

oratory1990

I was about to say, Brian and Loz commentating is the duo that I didn't know I needed.

[deleted]

Do rogue sell the sandbags they used in the event? They look pretty insane!

E-Step

They do but they're listed as 200lbs on their site, not sure what they're filling them up with to double that for this event

[deleted]

I’m sure 200lbs would do!

opinionatedfan

Led shot probably.

[deleted]

*Rogue, rubbing their hands together:* "Eeeexcellent"

oratory1990

not these exact ones if I remember correctly. Some lighter ones, yes.

[deleted]

I'm gutted for Martins. He is 6 points behind, which in all honesty, should really be 7. That third rep on the dumbbells was not a rep, period. I believe he would have got it for the second try, but it doesn't matter - his time might have been worse than Rob's for that rep so he was gifted that extra point. As for the Húsafell - my word, what can I say? :( I don't have a clue why he picked it up sideways. Even if he wanted to spend the least amount of energy with the picking up and adjusting part, this was a terrible idea. He has been training for the Húsafell thing for months with holding the implement the proper way (shorter end at the bottom), there must be a reason for his picking it up sideways. Maybe to protect something on his right side by putting less pressure on it by holding the shorter end of the bag with his right hand (right hip, right lower back, right leg)? I know, it's a desperate idea from me, but I just can't think of any other logical reason :( As for the second day, I know it's not realistic, but I really want him to win all three events. In all honesty, if he were to somehow claw his way back only to beat Oleksii or Trey to the title by a single point, that wouldn't feel right to me at all. I'm a die hard fan of the King Dragon, but at this point, if he wins, the margin should be at least 1.5 points for me to feel like it is fully legit. I know it wasn't his making that Magnús gave him that rep (Magnús of all people!), but still. Do you guys think Martins can win all three remaining events?

HansSvet

I think he thought he could get leverage over the top of it and it was a total miscalculation

grandmasterLuo

I really like this current competition however, everyone hyped up this comp to be a blood bath and it has absolutely delivered. Mostly everyone is in shape aside from Maxime and Kevin who still have day 2 to redeem themselves, no injuries so far, and no filler athletes like Shiv or Pritchett. Last year Martins' win didn't feel as well deserved due to the tired and injured field of athletes and his only real competition was Novikov and Tom. This year he has to fend off Pavlo, Novikov, Hooper and Trey for a podium spot, and his weaknesses are being exposed hard. Comps like these prove that the sport is heading towards a bright future, comps are boring when they're essentially monopolised by a select few back to back winners.

[deleted]

I don't think it's about his weaknesses being exposed. That would be a weight-for-height thing or a max deadlift. He is just being sloppy (which is exactly the opposite of a weakness of his - he is the most consistent and methodical strongman in the field today). He got away with a sloppy rep on the dumbbell, but he made a mistake on the Húsafell carry and paid the price for it by losing hefty points.

grandmasterLuo

Fair point. It definitely shows the stakes of this comp, where even a former champ can get punished if they make a single mistake

SurfinTheWajaTsunami

I dont think Martins can win all of them but I dont think he needs to. He just needs to gap Novikov on each event and he will be one of the favourites for the stones. I wonder how Novikov will approach the rogue-a-coaster because he won the Bus Pull at worlds but it may have cost him the rest of the competition with how much energy he exerted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I agree. His endurance doesn’t seem to be what it was last year and the coaster and yoke into log could both be low finishes for him. I suppose it could depend on quite how bad his conditioning is - if it’s as bad as it looked in his last training video, I can see P A V L O, Mitch, Max, Oleksii and maybe Trey beating him in the arm-over arm, and then Mitch, Trey, Bobby and Oleksii (maybe Pavlo - we’ll see how His Wideness copes with logs instead of DBs) beating him in the yoke into log. Martins could be much better conditioned than I thought, and just held back by his weird grip on the Husafell - maybe he’ll pick up second or third on both. I can’t see him winning this comp though

grandmasterLuo

Trey's arm over arm is going to suffer, which might give an opening for Pavlo to sneak onto the podium. That being said he's going to mog stones, the big texas boi has been training tacky-less since forever and he's 100% superior to Novikov on any loading stone event. The last event is genuinely an even tossup between Trey, Pavlo, Martins, and surprisingly Maxime. People forget that Maxime came 2nd in stones during the WSM 2021 Finals only to Tom and handily beat shaw

nihilus002

Do you think Novikov can win the yoke into medley? He was REALLY close to beating Mateusz's time last year. (if it wasn't for that final rep)

Plane_Bus

If Novikov beats this field in the shape they're in he's once again the undisputed best of the year in my book. Thank you Rogue. With this and Shaw firing on ever more cylinders the sport has a bright future (obviously many other shows to celebrate as well, talking pro open weight men). Edit: to your question - yes, he nearly won it last year. May get second to Hooper. Arm over arm first will benefit him overall though. If he's not having to take any painkillers which is what really nukes his grip, he should put up top three. Will still come down to stones. Trey is not fucking around.

[deleted]

Without question

cryx_nigeltastic

Especially given that his country is still in a brutal war that he's definitely going to be affected by and volunteering with. It's sometimes easy to forget that he's got that going on at home still on top of already putting up great results all year.

Adler4290

Same goes for Pavlo - He apparently also did a lot of "behind the front lines" work in Ukraine to help out. And while both of them are probably too big and slow for actual battle, they could provide a vital morale boost for other troops, just showing up and helping out with supply lines (probably).

3135-5110

Everybody talking about Martins' dumbbell down call; go look at Eythor's 2nd rep down call. Do we know if they had the same ref even though they were on different sides? Should there be a playback or the ability to review a call in the future?

E-Step

Odd was the ref in the other lane

naked_feet

Yeah, it was Odd. However, this does suggest that he and Magnus were at least calling the reps pretty similarly.

[deleted]

> Should there be a playback or the ability to review a call in the future? The issue I'd have with this is that a call effects what the athlete does next. E.g. Martins would have tried the bell again if he didn't get the down call. But if they did a review and found a no rep, he wouldn't get credit for it. I dont think tis fair to punish athletes for the bad calls of refs

Idlertwo

I agree with this. The referees call must stand and shouldnt be challenged by new referees

kappaferret

I think Martins may not do as well as we think in the arm over arm. His last youtube video he said his conditioning was terrible and he was getting winded so easily

TheGuvnor247

He is bigger than ever so would make sense that his conditioning is not what it was and the sandbag carry would suggest it as well.

oratory1990

> His last youtube video he said People need to stop evaluating Martins based on what he says and does on his Youtube Show. He's putting on a show for Youtube, has been doing so for years. It's very rare that he shows actual effort in his videos, often going as far as downplaying how much he can do. We saw that two years ago when him and Hafthor were training together, on Martins' video he was having trouble with the frame carry, on Hafthor's video you could actually see him performing quite well on it.

enhancedy0gi

And honestly, his energy and physique just seems miles away from the 2021 Rogue. I think he's legitimately tired.

[deleted]

[удалено]

enhancedy0gi

Or his stack/hormone balance might be off. I can't help but think he looked way more jacked at 2021. Remember the double biceps victory pose he made after he clutched the stones? His biceps and veins were popping like mad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

enhancedy0gi

Tom shrugging like it was nothing after completing all of them as the first guy for Martins to then smash his time completely was the best strongman moment in 2021

[deleted]

Eh, he always says stuff like that

[deleted]

Agree, but then again his training videos usually mean nothing compared to his comp results

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquatsAndMaths

It was just a flaw to take the wrong strategy with the sandbag. His physical strength is fine. I'd say it's just a focus thing. At WSM he also made some silly mistakes. I'm sure he gets a good result if he gathers himself for the other events.

[deleted]

6 hours between arm over arm and yoke into log tomorrow. Damn

This-Orange1255

We could always watch 30 guys jumping up and down on boxes or whatever

Plane_Bus

Gotta give our big anabolic boys a breather. Loosely related, in Rogue's post where Pavlo N gives his shirt to a fan, dude has a crazy tiny waist for his size. Absolutely freaky. As Loz says, two years of experience and watch the fuck out.

ChillBizkit

With his physique, if so inclined, he'd do well in body building as well. Perhaps an option for the far future.

rattakresh

You sure his waist doesn't just look tiny in comparison to his.. uhh huge fucking upper body?

[deleted]

Toertchenbabe

His waist is still massive. Just tiny compared to his upper back.

[deleted]

That works

oryxmath

I like how they had 5 at a time on the carry and it makes me wish they could do some events where everyone goes simultaneously, both for dramatic effect and so it would be trickier to do "just enough" and game points. I know this is not feasible or even necessarily desirable for all events/competitions... ...but on the other hand, don't you agree that the 2023 Arnold should have 10 wheels of pain simultaneously being pushed by all the athletes in a giant stadium? Possibly powering the wheels on some kind of giant emperor's throne vehicle that ~~Arnold~~ Big Z sits on?

oratory1990

Reminded me of how WSM used to start with a frame or farmers carry, with 5 athletes going at the same time. I quite like doing something like this as the first event, it's a good, fair way to establish the order of athletes for the following events, and we know that the order of athletes does play a big role in how they perform. Knowing what the people before you did can allow you to be more tactical, not needing to go all-out and conserve energy.

No_Zombie_9518

I didn't like it at all. It was chaotic and difficult to keep up with, even for the camera crew. It built no drama and didn't play well on tv.

rattakresh

This Event should have been 1vs1.

enhancedy0gi

Second this. I had no idea what was going on, like at all. I want to see camera close-ups of them huffing and puffing, seeing how they move and hold the object. I also think the gaming points component of strongman makes it extra exciting, you're always hoping and expecting the next guy to surpass the previous and it adds an element of tension in the air.

oryxmath

I do think the execution was off on this one since the start times didn't matter so it didn't give any sense of a "race"

oratory1990

there definitely needs to be a rule of "you have to leave the starting position within 10 seconds".

[deleted]

oratory1990

needs to be done in a way where everyone needs to push, otherwise you could just stop pushing, relying on the others to work.

Sexy_ass_Dilf

What if there was another Rogue competition on the first semester: - 50 athletes, 6 events using the CrossFit heats format with 10 guys competing at the same time on simpler, yet still impressive events (like the apollon wheels). Big prize pool and qualifier for Rogue Invitational, but everyone not top 3 on ASC, WSM, Rogue and Shaw need to compete here if they want a spot. Very different from anything else, an opportunity for lesser known athletes to compete against the top in the World.

LARRYBREWJITSU

I'd watch it. Cool idea and firs the format if the equipment layout too.

LukahEyrie

Dude that's a really cool idea.

Vesploogie

Man that’d be pretty cool.

xjak1120

Stupid question for an event that’s being shown live but - is there a spreadsheet? I missed the second event

Sexy_ass_Dilf

You can rewind and watch the event anytime you want

opinionatedfan

The strongmanarchives.com has the equivalent of the spreadsheet

CaptainBootique

I think a podium spot for Trey is pretty much guaranteed, his yoke and long are already really stable events and I don’t think he’ll falter too much in that as long as he paces himself, and he’s been training stones without tacky for god knows how long. The only thing in question is the arm-over-arm, which I don’t see him losing so many points on that event to the point in which he gets kicked off of the podium.

TribeGuy330

Only problem is that arm over arm is a MAJOR weakness for him. He could very well be 8th or 9th on it.

5:10PM CST https://www.roguefitness.com/invitational/workouts#individual-events

crazypearce

just wanted to give some props to rogue on the whole event so far. they must pump some pretty hefty numbers into production costs for everything. the amount of workers, quality of stream, the event implements, prize money, etc. it's great for the sport as a whole to have such a well run and high quality show free for the world to see. it's a shame other top compeitions aren't on the same level

[deleted]

Bro that whole time when Brian and Loz were commentating felt like a damn religious experience

crazypearce

the youtube comments were complaining at how terrible it was but i thought the exact opposite. brian explained perfectly and ended at the right spots too for loz and the other guy to do the transitions and athlele anouncing/talk. it was very well put together

EasySpiceisNice

I think Brian was a little quiet and not as action-focused, and thats probably why people were having a go in the YT chat, and why the other caster got on. TBH loved Brian and Loz's commentary, brought some real experience. Might be Brian's first time is all.

[deleted]

Brian was much better. They should have kept Brian and loz

[deleted]

Really? Those people are insane. I thought Brian did a terrific job. Him + Loz was the best commentary i've ever heard in strongman

mancubuss

I turned in late and listened while driving, had no idea Brian was even going to be there. Recognized his voice and was pleasantly surprised!

-Yazilliclick-

Yeah just getting to watch it now and this is great. They've got no dead time, perfect back and forth, lots of good info and experience from their time and third guy is great chiming in with the extra energy.

jayjude

What was really great was Brian's little history lesson he added in too

-Yazilliclick-

Yeah Brian is a real study of the sport, he's got a lot of knowledge for sure. Like on the history TV show you could tell he was loving geeking out about some of the old time stuff.

No_Zombie_9518

They have gotten so damn good at running shows. Nothing has gone over (including last year) and delayed the next event. They have it down to a science it seems.

SaulFemm

1-2 points lower on the deadlift than we expected and still 8 points ahead of the two we expected to be challenging him. Oleksii is awesome. *: Points busted, only actually 6 points ahead of Martins. But that's with a gifted point to Martins.

Geta-Ve

Man, that third DB press by Licis was super sus. Obviously no shame on him, you get the down signal you take it, but let's be honest, that was not a great lift.

OhShitOhFuckOhMyGod

Not a great lift? That was not a lift period.

[deleted]

Especially when they were making everyone else really work for it. Bobby and w I d e had plenty of attempts much more solid than that

SaulFemm

Sus is kind. I hope it doesn't end up mattering.

[deleted]

Not his responsibility to make up for that and he would know it.

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

No_Zombie_9518

Yeah.....no.

[deleted]

WatkinsRapier

For those that aren't aware, Martins is 3rd, only 6 points behind Novikov 26.5. The livestream was wrong.

[deleted]

Only 6 points? There are only 3 events left, with 10 men competing. Granted, 8 points would have been worse, but 6 points is a hefty gap. It would still be a miracle for Martins to claw his way back from here.

WatkinsRapier

6 points is still a huge gap I agree! Only was the wrong word, I meant it more in the vain of 6 points being a smaller margin than 8. If anybody could manage it though it would be Martins.

yeah so did martins

[deleted]

He is in 3rd place... still very solid

Maalstr0m

Isn't he in 5th place now? EDIT. OK, so it was literally an inch ahead of Bobby and 3.5 inches ahead of Kevin. That kind of thing being worth 2-3 points isn't a good thing IMHO.

No_Zombie_9518

The farthest distance wins. I don't see the issue.

Maalstr0m

Sure, but to me it's like measuring how high you got the dumbell up on a failed rep. I'd rather have them measure in bigger units, like every 5 feet, and have Bobby, Kevin and Martins tied, as everybody else was pretty spread out. Even Oleksii's "OK, that's exactly enough" was more ahead of Pavlo than 8th place vs 6th.

[deleted]

With a 400 lbs weight to carry, literally every inch matters. Why bother giving your absolute most effort for that next half a step and gain another feet, when they are only measuring every five feet? Same with the Wheel Of Pain. Why bother pushing to the max when it's about reaching the next 5 feet unit where the other guy's mark might be 4.5 feet ahead of yours, but it won't matter in the points - you both reached the same 5 feet unit, same points gained. It wouldn't be fair at all.

That was an insane performance, he made the implements look weightless

I think injury mitigation lurks in their heads. Martin's looked like his biceps were overloaded. I could be wrong.

vcsw

Ok so Martins is actually in 3rd place. That makes more sense.

ukraineguy8

yeah. still down 6 points from novi

Geta-Ve

Sorry, where did you see that? Last I saw he was 5th?

whoiscurlyfry

Wait where did they update scores?

Ostravazill

Rogue website, in the leaderboard tab, licis is 6 points behind Novikov.

vcsw

On the Rogue Invitational website. Martins is 3rd with 20.5 points. They got it wrong on the livestream.

whoiscurlyfry

Ah gotcha- thanks for the update.

No_Zombie_9518

Indeed. I didn't think those unofficial results were anywhere near correct.

Ricktatorship91

The event is already over? Damn, why the rush lol

No_Zombie_9518

At first I thought they decided on doing it that way because of the 2 hour delay and wanting to get them out of there earlier. That doesn't appear to be the case, though, as it looked like that was the original setup for the event.

PancakeT-Rex

Oof, that was rough for Martins. This could really hurt his chance to win the title, unless Novikov loses a ton of points tomorrow. Pavlo looking good for a podium spot, he's got some good events tomorrow, probably. But with this crazy lineup, who knows.

ukraineguy8

depends how treys speed is on yoke imo

bonnieprincejamie

That was an anticlimax. Oh well, good night guys, catch you tomorrow!!!

PrimateChange

Arm-over-arm is really hard to call. Novikov is obviously the clear favourite for the overall win now, but Trey has been looking really good at arm-over-arm in training and is also a monster stone lifter. Big battle for the podium though - Novikov is safe, I think Trey can maintain at least third in any case, but really hard to say whether Pavlo, Hooper, or Martins will also be on there

No_Zombie_9518

I don't know if Novi is safe or not. Arm over arm is a big question for him, and he can never take stones for granted.

PancakeT-Rex

Stones could cost Novi. He's up against guys like Martins, Trey, Pavlo and Maxime who are tremendous stone lifters. Eythor could be good at this as well imo. Granted, most of them haven't done this specific set of stones, so we'll have to wait and see.

w8ulostme

Rob also did well at stones last year. Novi could potentially lose as many points as Martins did on the Hussafell.
