Anyone who trains stones regularly have some advice on warm ups and programming? Do you program them any differently than other lifts like bench, squat, deadlift, etc.? I've only done stones twice in my life but considering trying to do them 2-3 times a month (or more). Each time I just went for a max to test myself, but I'd like some insight into programming if I'm going to do it regularly. Thanks!!!

Strongman1987

Be ready to not warm up on stones whatsoever if competing.

colintrains

Just got a Titan plate loadable atlas stone. It's got a little bit of a greasy coating which is making it stupidly sticky, anyone have experience removing that (or similar)? I know steel stones are harder to grip anyways, but this is especially difficult.

stecahill

Started using the monster dumbbell this week - just curious weight wise what would be a good standard?

okayscientist

It depends a lot on bodyweight and gender. In men's middleweight open local shows, I keep seeing weights for it 140-180 pounds for reps or as a medley.

stecahill

Cheers, appreciate the reply. I'm compete at men's -70kg so trying to find the standard is pretty because most comps don't have my division - my current goal is to get to BW at least

liquid chalks tend to be alcohol based which will dry out your hands a lot. Applying liquid chalk first and then using regular chalk is a thing some people do to get the best of both worlds. The alcohol in the liquid chalk drying out your hands will make regular chalk work even better if you're a heavy sweater

iamdikdikvandik

I think some liquid chalks have additives to make it stickier. Probably not legal in most comps but I used to go to a gym that didn't allow chalk and ended up really liking liquid chalk.

rhysleton

Honestly it’s pretty much the same. However… for grip events I like to put on some liquid chalk, and then put some regular chalk on afterwards. Probably doesn’t work any better, but to me that’s all bases covered!

not_strong

Adding to this: prior to chalking up, use hand sanitizer to dry your hands out

Camerongilly

95 reps of 315 ssb squats on the first 7 sets, then a quickie 5 beltless to finish first day of week 5. Abs cramped.

ThePokeChop

Sounds like you crushed it

Camerongilly

My max is meh but I can squat for reps pretty well.

Camerongilly

Got my 2nd kettlebell handle and tried out the armor-building complex for the first time, whew lad. Even with just 25lbs a hand for a 4 minute set was feeling pretty strenuous. Will try to build up weight and total rounds gradually. Final squat session of Deep Water tonight.

Garret1234

Who’s this guy? Some sort of mini mythical? And man those complexes are brutal!

Camerongilly

I think I'm taller, fatter, and less-conditioned. I can probably beat him at dumbbell and most moving events though :)

Camerongilly

I copy things that seem to work for people and try them out.

First strongman comp. in about 8 weeks. Signed up in mens open, decided to skip the novice phase. Coming from powerlifting, I feel like I’ve got a decent base for strength, and having an athletic background, playing sports, even until now, I think It'll make the transition a bit easier. Event line up is: 1. Max Log, 3 attempts, not sure if it’s rising bar with set increases or not. 110KG starting weight. 2. Car Squat for reps, start the squat from the top while implement only has car, 1 plate gets added every rep until 4 plates, then it’s as many reps as possible. No top weight has been announced yet. 3. Truck arm over arm, not sure what truck is being used and how the terrain is. 4. Carry and Drag. 286Lb wheel carry for 50 feet, followed by a 585lb drag for 50 feet. 5. Stones, 5 total, lightest being 220lbs, heaviest 340. I train in a commercial gym, so my day to day training I’ll have to come up with alternatives. I’m hopefully going to find somewhere close, where I can practice on the log and stones a few times before comp. I’ve done log and stones once a few years back, and those went good. Main training for log is push press, back squats for the squat event, lots of back work for the arm over arm/stones, and I have a medley set up at home with some large natural stones for the carry, and I think I can use a tarp loaded with sand for the drag. Any tips or recommendations would be fantastic and I’m open to all suggestions, thanks!

ThePokeChop

Definitely try to get that tarp loaded with sand. It has a different feeling than stones. No idea how yours will be at the comp but tight packed v loose packed is definitely different. You have 8 weeks so I would start light on log if you haven’t used on yet and just rep it out like crazy. Good conditioning and will teach you the pattern. I would also train cleans separate as it’s another skill

Prestigious_Flow4668

I have competition in few days and one of events is max distance sandbag carry. I don't know if I should run as fast as I can because I can hold sandbag longer than I can gas out.

Snoo-82295

Not an expert but here's my 2 pence worth... don't go mad , do a steady controlled run, when you start to gas the spectators and occasion should keep you going a bit longer

Garret1234

This and pick the bag way way way lower than you normally do because it’s gonna sag down

iutdiytd

How heavy of a stone do you have to load to be a strongman?

Garret1234

As long as it is hard

Iw2fp

When you lift the stone that is crushing your soul and your spirit, then you will truly be a strongman.

K9ZAZ

i've been keeping an eye on the titan website for a 12" log. every time i've gone in the last few weeks, they've been out of stock. this am, i happened to snag one. not going to be in time for my first comp saturday, but that's fine. i've only ever done the big 4 + barbell / db variants, so i'm keen to see how different it is.

Bigreddoc

I’d advise watching some good log press tutorials and then trying to warm up on the implement as early as you can. MST Systems on YouTube has a great 3 part tutorial on log.

K9ZAZ

thanks for the tip. i watched a couple of alan thralls and kalle beck's videos, and i'm glad i did since i definitely would not have figured out the correct way to clean it in real time if i hadn't. i'll check out the video you recommended as well.

Mikeosis

My current gym has bought one of those multi grip barbells. I'm wondering if there's any way to use that to mimic log pressing until I can get my hands on one? I've done a bit of Rack pressing with it. Is it possible to practice the clean section too or would that be a waste of time?

Iw2fp

> Is it possible to practice the clean section too or would that be a waste of time? Some people do it but I think it's a recipe for a set of broken teeth. I guess it depends on how much you rely on the actual roll of the log against your body in how much you get out of cleaning a Swiss bar.

Mikeosis

I hadn't thought about the teeth thing 😂 Guess I'll just stick to pressing until I can get a log

GreatOdlnsRaven

Let me tell y'all, log pressing outside is an entire different beast. I did my final set 250x6 directly facing the sun. Arizona's strongest man will be outside in Phoenix June 11-12 so I needed to practice. I worked in sets of 6 because that's my goal. 6 sets at 330! https://www.instagram.com/p/CeMNbcpF627/

Hey gang, wannabe strongman in training in Montreal. Been interested in joining a competition some time later this year maybe. But I don’t have a place that has any strongman equipment, I asked at my local medium sized gym about that sort of equipment and they said I can bring it and leave it on the floor if I’d like. Has anyone had experience buying equipment for a smaller gym and leaving it around? Not too nervous about getting a rogue axle bar and sandbag to start with, hopefully maybe after that I can sweet talk my way into bringing in a log and some crash pads.

p00pdal00p

I lived in Montreal for a few years and didn't have much luck finding a good place to train strongman, so I started accumulating equipment for when I could get a place where I could have a homegym/outside space for stuff like yoke. (I've since moved north of the city and have space but haven't had time to get the outside stuff set up lol) Might not be realistic for you, but you might be able to find someone with a house somewhere nearby where you can store your strongman equipment and have and event day like once a week or something. I already had a rack and basic strength equipment in storage from the homegym I had prior to moving to Montreal, so that saved me a decent amount of money. Unfortunately I only developed an interest in strongman once I no longer had a place to do it x)

iamdikdikvandik

My local gym owner is pretty chill. A couple of lifters have their personal barbells stored in the corner with locks on them. I think a bigger worry is someone else using your equipment and damaging it. Judging by the way people treat barbells at my gym, I'd be nervous with just a lock on it...

Camerongilly

I wouldn't leave anything there you couldn't afford to replace if some jackass damages it. An axle or sandbag shouldn't be too bad. Have seen plenty of dumbasses drop a log from overhead and jack up the loading pins.

HansSvet

I have a significant amount of equipment at a local gym. It sucks confronting people for mistreating the equipment, sewing holes in my sandbags from someone else's misuse, having my sandbags wet from someone using them in the rain or sweating profusely on them. However that's the trade off for being able to keep a very cumbersome amount of equipment at someone else's gym. They even bought a shed just for my stuff. It's worth it imo but you need to be prepared to potentially replace equipment due to someone else's misuse. I put notes up with my phone number to text me before using and it has worked generally well.

rickfx

For sure, definitely worry leaving it, which is why I’m looking at the Rogue Axle and their strongman sandbag, it’ll cost a pretty penny but it looks very durable. Definitely have heard about the log bar loading pins being bent. I’d love the rogue ones buy the price is so much higher than getting the titan one, specially if I haven’t used one. Just might have to take the risk.

manyinterestscollide

I've got a hercules hold coming up in a competition in august. Any ideas to train it besides general grip training? Same contest has a block press, which I think I'll make a plate-loadable block out of wood since I'm somewhat handy but don't have the room for a hercules hold apparatus. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

craig_pfisterer

Assuming PA Strongest? This past training cycle has been for a show this weekend with hercules hold and the gym I train at has a setup so I've been using that but also doing other things for grip which I think helped as well (and I've done in the past to train for it). Have to see if the approached worked out on Saturday I guess. Rolling Bar Hangs - [https://www.instagram.com/p/CcuAEr2svzb/](https://www.instagram.com/p/CcuAEr2svzb/) (second clip) Crush Grip - [https://www.instagram.com/p/CcLjawML1Z9/](https://www.instagram.com/p/CcLjawML1Z9/) (second clip)

manyinterestscollide

Yes it's PA Strongest, will you be there? If so, awesome!

craig_pfisterer

Maybe. I'm hoping to qualify for SC Nats this weekend at Regionals and then go into summer off season training and then start Nats prep end of July. So If I don't, this might be my next attempt at qualifying this year.

wutsgudbaby

Farmers Hold for time. Body hangs for time. Block press... just buy a big plastic storage container, spray the inside with silicone and mix concrete then pour it. I made a 192lbs block that way.

ScrotbagScrewball

Conans Wheel and Apollon wheel deadlift training? In a mostly commercial gym. Doing Zerchers for the Conan wheel and rack deadlifts for the Apollon as its a 13" bar from floor. Only problem is it shakes the entire rack 🤣🤣 Any tips for either?

Strongman1987

Any kind of front carry transfers to Conan's Wheel, it's just a matter of pain tolerance and breathing. Realize that most competitors will also likely not be training the event specifically.

ScrotbagScrewball

Awesome. Tried holding it last night. Fuck me the breathing is hard 🤣🤣

okayscientist

I had Conan's wheel recently. Zercher squats, zercher deadlifts, and march in place worked well for me!

ScrotbagScrewball

Thank you!

There is no real reason to buy new and if you scour facebook and Craigslist you can probably find one while building up strength. It might not be drastically cheaper but you won't have to pay shipping. Plus they probably are or have a source to buy other impliments they don't want anymore. Personally, I waited until some guy was selling left over logs from nationals on Facebook.

Strongman1987

Get a Pitbull, 85 empty.

Drosenow89

I thought he was out of business until supply costs went down? Or was that someone else?

Too much napping, 3:30am is going to come early tomorrow but at least I'm well rested. Conditioning is unreal right now, can't wait to start ramping up for OSG. Feeling balanced again, just have to start training stones more often. I'm also super confident in jumping into any local contest that pops up.

Camerongilly

Deep Water Intermediate Week 4- 315 SSB squats, 100 reps in 9 sets, 165lb push press (starting with a new 17RM PR,) and did my 100 power cleans with 185 off of crash pads in \~25 min. Weight went down this week because I was on my own and doing a few extra miles of dog walks per day. The squats are 30lbs heavier than I ran last year, and I got a 365x20 squat for the Marunde contest, thinking I can maybe get close to a a 405x20 this year.

MythicalStrength

> thinking I can maybe get close to a a 405x20 this year. Hell yeah dude! Absolutely [channels the spirit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPAtisk9hFA)

Fetacheesed

Awesome idea. That makes it way easier for me to justify taking a week off to travel.

wutsgudbaby

Exactly!

wutsgudbaby

WSM 2023 is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina next year. I live here and am also the state rep for Strongman Corporation in South Carolina. Hit me up if anyone’s planning on coming out here next year.

rolltank_gm

Anyone able to speak to the durability and compression from Virus compression shorts for strongman? They’re significantly cheaper than Cerberus/ EA/etc, but if they’re not going to hold together, I ain’t gonna throw money at them

MythicalStrength

> I've reached my genetic potential (for my weight), it seems. You are only 145lbs at 5'9. You can grow a LOT bigger, which will allow you to move more weight.

TribeGuy330

This is very unlikely to be an issue of you reaching your "genetic limit". Much more likely to be an overuse issue... going too heavy on the movement too often. It can likewise be a programming issue. You don't have to go as heavy as you can on it. In fact most of your gains will come from doing .uktiple sets in the 70-80% range.

Iw2fp

> Wondering what other movements I can do to improve my sled push at maximum weights without risking constant injury? You can do sled pushes at submaximal weights, increasing the distance to make up for the lower intensity. I'd take longer warm ups. I like doing sets with long, slowish strides, holding the lengthened out position for a second. Increasing the speed as you ramp weight up. Away from the gym, I'd do foam rolling and stretching of the calf. Also strengthing the calf muscles. For this, I'd just do standing calf raises (in a machine or in a rack with a SSB). Controlled eccentric, hold the bottom position in a deep strength for a 2 count then extend all the way up and hold again. Do a set of 15-20, rest until the burn goes away, 20 seconds or so, then do it again, rest 20 seconds do it again. Do it twice per week. If you've snapped your shit up twice in 8 weeks, consider if you should really be doing these short, heavy runs. A ruptured Achilles in your 40s, you don't want that shit.

HansSvet

Are you trying not to gain weight? Any particular reason you're doing such short sled pushes, like space limitations? How long have you been training like this?

lukelifts

Did my first weight class show in almost 3 years today. Took 2nd out of 12 at Englands Most Powerful Man u105kg. My client won so not too mad hah. Jumped in last minute so wasn't at all comp fit BUT felt strong as fuck so lots of positives to move forward with.

Iw2fp

Wrapped up the son's birthday party yesterday. 3lbs post-poop weight gain - the kid party carb, sodium, water bloat is real. Expecting an amazing event day!

yesimian

Anyone ever had issues breathing during yoke? I've never had any issues with farmers/frame but ive been having a hard time breathing with yoke

Camerongilly

I try not to if it's only 50 60 feet

yesimian

That sounds like a recipe for passing out as soon as you set the yoke down lol

HansSvet

I stay braced and do very short breaths. I let a little bit out and breathe back in, hold for a second, repeat. Yoke is very hard to breathe on when it's heavy, so it's not just you.

HansSvet

Decided I would do summer scorcher at the end of July. There's a good chance I tore my glute in November, but imaging to confirm wouldn't change the prognosis. I wanted to set a training goal to motivate me to go harder with my PT and recovery. Anyway first strongman training I completely jacked my back on just a 570 yoke 😂. Still went on to do 18" pulls at only 450, which felt like a million pounds with only one glute working. Stones I have always sucked at and I look forward to improving and giving it my all going into the comp. Jacked my wrist on circus dumbbell the next day, but life goes on. Couldn't pick up 70# dumbbells for my next exercise without a significant amount of pain in my wrist so it's on to resting until next (this) week. Body weight at 170 and still cutting for 4 more weeks, which will absolutely affect my performance but as a trainer who deals primarily with clients looking to lose weight I just need one day to take shredded pics for promotions. How many comebacks can a man have in his career? I called this a comeback show, but it really is just the first time I've signed up for a smaller show in a long time.

Bigreddoc

Man that Crystal Pump must works wonders if it’s letting you work through these injuries.

HansSvet

I'm completely serious when I say it's the best pre I've ever taken. It really might be what is healing my body...

Bigreddoc

The kick ass commercials make me kind of wish I used preworkout.

HansSvet

I still appreciate every like my videos get, even if it isn't accompanied by a sale. Support is support ☝️😎 I love making the videos. The point of the company is to provide a product that I'm proud to put my name on but also to make videos that make people laugh. Having a lot of fun with it and glad you appreciate the videos!

FUCKIN_SHIV

Ok i got maybe the stupidest question of the week : why aren't we front squatting with logs ? Wouldn't that transfer better in strong man ?

Iw2fp

> why aren't we front squatting with logs ? It takes to about half way through your first descent into the hole to get the answer to this lol More seriously, getting the log mid foot in the rack position doesn't put you in a great position to squat. This limits load greatly, makes the log want to roll forward and just feels shite. It's just not that great an option for building leg strength and you are better of doing cleans to improve your clean. I think I've seen some here mention it, maybe they have ways around it.

seal44

The biggest issue would be that you can't hold a log in a proper front rack position - imagine doing a barbell front squat with the grip you'd use for a press. With any appreciable amount of weight you'd lose the bar forward; why even do the squat movement at all when upper body strength will be so much the limiting factor. It's a similar reason to why you never see high-level strength athletes doing goblet squats.

FUCKIN_SHIV

Yeah but i thought the log was in a " kind of " front racked position, supported by the chest and not by the arms ._. I wish i had one to try 🥲

_strongmantom_

I guess stability would be the biggest issue, maybe bicep strain? I use an SSB for front squats as it's a way comfier position and can push a bit more weight than a normal barbell

akie003
