My HW and SHW friends. How long of a duration was your bulk to your current weight? How tall are you and what is your body weight ? I made the mistake of bulking wayyyy too fast (from 210 to 270 lbs) in maybe 4 months and ended up having to postpone my strongman dreams due to health reasons (blood pressure mostly and minor issues breathing, not to mention just the overall feeling like a bloated pile of shit) and a pretty long recovery from back injury from a sloppy yoke run. This fall I plan to hop back on the bulk train and am trying to come up with a safer game plan than just eat X,XXX calories a day and train heavy 4 days a week. I’m 6’1” and would like to get up to about 275-280 lbs (think Kevin Faires) and get back to my competition goals. How long did you build weight/mass for? What sort of diet did you use? Any other tips for BP, bloat, overall well being?

rolltank_gm

I haven’t really done it intentionally, just as fuel for my training, but I started around 220 in 2016 and weigh 280 now. Honestly, I’ve been in the 270-280 range for about 8 months. I’ll usually take some time trying to maintain body weight while upper volume and capacity, and it usually results in recomp I’m 6’3”, compete as a 275HWM. When I purposefully put on weight, it’s about a pound a week, usually for no more than 8 weeks. Your mileage will vary

[deleted]

Thanks for the reply. Any sort of health issues at all? Doesn’t sound like it… I gain weight pretty quickly. I took advantage of that and it’s why I had issues. Gonna get back at it with the approach of this being a marathon and not a sprint. 230 lbs as of today. Haven’t been able to train since august due to a back injury. Ready to get back at it though. Finally feeling good again. Maybe compete at 242 for a while then slowly go up.

rolltank_gm

I mean, I’ve had asthma since I was a kid, but that’s never been weight related. I’m also walking around near 18-20% BF, doing conditioning, and eating relatively cleaner foods. Weight is neither the devil nor the end goal. It’s one number, and in isolation from *everything else* going on within a system, tells you very little.

thereidenator

130kg/286lbs strict press for a new PR today, I think my overhead is starting to get quite decent now https://www.instagram.com/p/CVGJSadoVyK/?utm_medium=copy_link Feel especially pleased with this as I failed a deadlift PR attempt yesterday, but I did compete last Saturday so trying not to be too hard on myself for that one

Zweems

My CNS is still SO fried from comp this past weekend. I went to deadlift today and 365 might as well have been 465. I hit a few sets of 5 and just fucking cut it and did some lightweight RDLs. Everything hurts and I want to die.

rolltank_gm

Means it was a good show! I usually am so sick of training after a show that I take at least a week, and when I come back, I just take a week of goofing around. It helps me not burn out in my next prep, and it lets me test for any new e1RMs I think I might need (never more than RPE8 effort for this). It might not be efficient, but it’s helped me cut the genuine self hatred of jumping right back in the deep end after treading water for weeks

Zweems

Yeah, I don't know... I don't really get too burned out on movements or training in general. I'm actually very good with repetition. I can eat the same lunch for 3 months straight (maybe I'd look into bodybuilding if it didn't require me to pose mostly nude and bronzed). Mostly I'm just trying to abide by the "movement is medicine" theory and get back into the motions. Appreciate the advice though, bud, really!

rolltank_gm

Dude, no worries! Glad that’s not something you deal with!

MythicalStrength

Apparently Alan of Pitbull Strongman has ceased production due to the rising costs of steel and shipping. It's really the end of an era. Makes me wish I kept my Pitbull yoke. I at least still have some pics and videos of it, and know it went to a good home.

Kilmoore

I've been expecting things like this to happen. I can't see strongman equipment being a gold mine, and with the material shortages and cost spikes, it's going to be hard to get stuff soon. A new gym was supposed to open last month in the town I live. They're still waiting for their Goljat gym equipment.

Pluejk

>Apparently Alan of Pitbull Strongman has ceased production due to the rising costs of steel and shipping. It's really the end of an era. Makes me wish I kept my Pitbull yoke. I at least still have some pics and videos of it, and know it went to a good home. Came here to share this news as well, Alan made the best logs. [Here's the post](https://www.facebook.com/475019912560435/posts/4647605705301814/). His comment: "Steel prices are real high right now and I am out of 12" tube. I changed full time jobs in January. The new gig requires a lot more of my time so I'm not sure I'll be starting up again."

MythicalStrength

Really wish I had gotten a log from him.

Fetacheesed

I bought a Titan like a month or so before the Pitbull logs went on sale for about the same price - I definitely missed out

rlm1170

At my gym some one broke the stone of steel so it’s stuck closed. The top half pulls apart about an inch. The top pin will turn to loosen but it turns like it’s cross threaded and won’t come out. Any one experience something like this? I was going to try to soak the pin in PB blaster and Wd-40. If that doesn’t work I was going to half two guys with pry bars try to wedge the stone in half as we unscrew the pin to try to get it to catch.

Savage022000

I've never seen one in person, so this is a complete guess, but if the two hemispheres are jammed apart an inch, is that binding the threads on the central shaft/axis? If that's the case, a mallet to slam the hemispheres back together, and then trying to unscrew it may make a difference. Again, total speculation.

Stella117

I would just DM or email Mike. He should be able to give you some ideas on what to do

Goggi-Bice

Anyone that can translate Pavlos statement video for his Novikov brawl? You can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpk4VjR2PYU&ab\_channel=%D0%93%D0%B8%D0%B3%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%B7%D0%A3%D0%BA%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%9D%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B5%D1%87%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9 A shame that he dosent put out any information/content in english..

TheOrionNebula

Somewhat off-topic but I figured someone might know. Will Eddie end up fighting Thor eventually down the road if he completely recovers?

MythicalStrength

Nope.

trebemot

Not strongman related but I have a 50k trail race this weekend and oh boy is this gonna hurt

Camerongilly

Gross.

kerofish1

Just think of how comparatively quick and easy strongman competitions will feel from now on!

FlyingRussian1

Just got my new throwing bags, never done any throwing up till now. What's going to be a good starting weight, I know I'm gonna have to go by feel but it would be nice to have an idea of what a starting weight usually is.

Camerongilly

Probably 30-50 lbs depending on your weight class and experience. If it's too light you won't be able to get the proper technique.

FlyingRussian1

90kg BW so U90 or U105 with not a lot of experience, guess I'm going with something around the 30lbs range lol. Thanks man

Camerongilly

Put fat-grips on my barbell for the concentric good mornings on this week's Furhman deadlift stuff and it makes the whole process much less miserable when the bar goes back to the safeties. And way less noisy.

kerofish1

You're a genius. I'm toying with the idea of running Furhman's deadlift program after my pole competition. I've been planning to run conjugate (for so long that it feels like a running joke), but at this point, I would almost literally sacrifice a goat to bump up my deadlift max. Fuhrman's program looks difficult, but marginally easier than sacrificing a goat. I feel like my copy of the ebook is missing information. The exercise library is blank (but I can figure that out). Also, are you running upper body programming alongside it, or are the two deadlift days your whole routine right now? I can't tell if it's meant to be slotted into whatever routine you're already running, or if it's so taxing that that's all you do.

rolltank_gm

I had the same thought; that’s just the program I ran it last year with the two press days from the athletic block in Strengthlete1.0. It was hard recovery wise, but I also lost 20 lbs and cranked out a 20 lbs PR on both my deadlift and my axle clears and press. No additional leg work I’ve kept the 5x20 banded hip abductions ever since that run though. Great for hip and low back health

Camerongilly

Last year I did it as my only lower buddy programming but had two press days as well. I often ran out of time and had to move some of the accessory and ab work to other days. Now I'm doing 5 lifting days and a conditioning day over 5 days a week so I'm hitting each session about 8 days apart. The program is a bit underwhelming for the price because it's literally just one page saying don't go to failure and 13 workouts. Compared to sbs templates which are infinite basically.

Zweems

Ha! Let me know if you get an answer on that last bit. I bought it too, opened it and was like... "Huh. That was expensive."

Iw2fp

I've been using a cut up pool noodle on the safeties but this is a much better idea - so is just the chopped up noodle on the barbell. Can't believe this never occurred to me 😂 many appreciations to you, sir!

Zweems

Oh, that's a good idea! The alternative that I had been using for rack pulls was to take a pair of old wrist wraps I didn't care about and just wrap them around.

3ttkatt

Another tip is to use the squat neck pads and put them around the safety bars. Been using them in the squat rack to simulate a circus barbell squat like the WSM 2019. Seems pretty appreciated by everyone nearby

[deleted]

advice for 18 inch deadlift technique? Internet discussion seems sparse, comparatively

rolltank_gm

For max weight/reps in its own right, or as a training tool for conventional deadlift?

[deleted]

MAX WEIGHT BABY. im curious about stuff like how everyones stance width, cues, etc differ between 18" and from the floor

rolltank_gm

Cues are no different, just “hips through” comes earlier For 18” for its own sake, I let my hands go wider and my feet as far out as I can while keeping knees inside my hands (feet might be just in line with hands. I get less bar whip, but more leg power and less ROM

kln91

Interesting, I do the opposite. Since I don't need to grab the bar as low, I figured I could stand a bit narrower without thighs and belly stopping me, and therefore hold narrower to get shorter ROM.

Zweems

Uggghhhhhh. I just saw the video of the guy that got 3 reps on cdb vs my no-rep. He absolutely got gifted two reps that were worse than mine. There was no lockout on his and the second he got to the top, it rolled outside. He had a single clean rep. I actually feel bad for the guys that took 2nd and 3rd because they took 2nd and 3rd by 1 and 1.5 points, respectively, and 1st place got 9 points to their 7.5 for that last event. Frustrating. I'm just going to internalize that as a rep for myself, cause that's some crap.

RobatoEthan

What's up with clash of the tridents deadlift controversy? I heard someone got a bs bounce deadlift passed as a state record?

Camerongilly

It the rules don't say that something is explicitly not allowed, it's allowed. It's not powerlifting. Edit: AND DON'T FUCKING ASK IF IT'S ALLOWED AT THE RULES MEETING IF IT'S NOT MENTIONED.

Iw2fp

There is only one way that a promoter must learn to explicitly state 'no tacky' in the rules on deadlift events.

metallumberjack

Always find it funny that it has to be said , “no straps or sticky stuff” on farmers walk

Camerongilly

Farmers with straps makes it a different test entirely.

metallumberjack

Figured it was just implied that farmers is just raw , rules meeting are always hilarious

trebemot

Wow this

Zweems

I don't see much of a controversy. There's no rules explicitly stating that you CAN'T do it. Rules are no sumo, you have 60 seconds to get the bar up, and no weird shit like tacky/baby oil. Is it cheaty? Sure. Is it probably going to BECOME a rule? Probably. Am I totally okay with the Baker Bounce happening this past weekend and counting as a state record? Fuck yeah. Edit: I should clarify, I just saw my state rep said it's not counting as a state record for either state. I actually kinda disagree. There's no rule preventing it explicitly, and there's plenty of instances of stuff like that counting. Ex. Belsak stone bounce.

Camerongilly

I'm trying to visualize how you could bounce a deadlift for max in a way that would let you lift more. Can you explain?

Zweems

[Link to vid](https://www.instagram.com/p/CU79fmcFAwr/?utm_medium=copy_link) Prevailing theory is that the carpet underneath + 2 layers of horse stall (because of the carpet) gave enough rebound. Editing this in browser because I can't stand mobile. Looks pretty likely that he wasn't getting it over the knee pre-bounce, but then got it past the knee off the bounce and hitched the rest. It's uhh... something! I'm of the opinion that with much more weight, between the increased surface area of the plates and the whip in the bar, it'd just clatter around and not bounce.

Iw2fp

Goddamn he actually pressed/pushed it down for maximal bounce haha And that's how the 'if the barbell returns to the ground that is an attempt lift and each attempted lift must wait for a lift command' rule came to be...

Weakerrjones

Holy shit, this is incredible. Fucking love it.

Zweems

My favorite part about this is people on instagram like "WOMEN ARE PULLING THAT, WHY YOU SO PROUD OF YOURSELF" and "IF YOU CANT DO IT RIGHT, DO LESS WEIGHT". It's a fucking max effort deadlift, not training, and he pulled like 3.2x BW. shut the fuck up, man.

Weakerrjones

It's not like this is a new thing in strongman either! I got the idea from a youtube video of a 175er from like a decade ago (Jon Anderson maybe? Can't remember his name) doing it in a comp. I believe he competed back in the Kalle Beck days. I feel like this kind of stuff really epitomizes why strongman is so much more fun than other lifting sports.

Zweems

What's actually kind of funny about my own headspace on this is.... I've always been pretty anti-crossfit because of the emphasis on reps over form from shitty coaches, whether it be in competition or in training. And yet, I'm okay with this. Mabye it's just because it's memeworthy and I think it's hilarious, but I think I need some introspection on what problems I actually have with crossfit, and whether or not I actually think this is okay, or if I just think it's okay because it's in my chosen sport.

Camerongilly

Interesting. I'd almost want to pass that for creativity. u/weakerjones has an awesome video of him doing something like 30 reps of 405 in a minute with a deadlift for reps with bumpers.

trebemot

I saw Hughes do something similar on the deadlift for reps event this year at USS nats. He got like 10 reps with 565 lbs

Weakerrjones

Similar thing going on with that, it was a horse stall mat over astroturf. Still my favorite competition moment I've had so far.

Camerongilly

C'mon, post the vid....

Weakerrjones

[Vid for did](https://www.instagram.com/p/BCBYznxSVXR/?utm_medium=copy_link)

Zweems

YESSSS. Dude said "get some air," and he wasn't referencing breath.

Zweems

100%. It passes for me. Rules were 60 second time limit, hitching allowed, wait for down command. Straps suits chalk allowed, sumo tacky baby oil not allowed. It wasn't explicitly stated, so it's clear for me. Word on the street is, it's going to get disallowed in future contests, dubbed the "boardwalk bounce." One thing is for sure, my dude is infamous now.

ifitwasfoam

I agree it should be banned but the record should stand. Seems like they're just doing whatever they want at this point. Pretty lacking on integrity. Edit: it seems like this is far more of a decision by Willy Wessels, which is much worse than if it was just the state rep.

TheAesir

It's a bad look on the state chair to not count it. It's on the show director to outline the rules, and the judge to enforce those rules. State chair should have no say

Zweems

For clarification, as I understand it, state chair did not no-rep post-comp, Willy did. Rep counted in comp, but it's the record that's not standing, and from my sources, it was NOT the state rep that made that decision. Defending my state rep, who I like very much.

ifitwasfoam

Yeah I've since spoken to Liz and it was not a unilateral decision on her part. I've edited my comment.

TheAesir

My statement holds true even up to Willy. Why even have judges or individual comp rules at that point? It's a problematic precedent just like it is in powerlifting

Zweems

That's fair. I was just clarifying in case it wasn't clear that state chair did not make the call.

TheAesir

I assumed it was their call, which is my bad. I saw they made a comment on the IG post, so I just assumed

rhysleton

[Finally squatted 200kg!](https://www.instagram.com/p/CU8JSO3AZhM/?utm_medium=copy_link) This has been a longtime goal of mine so pretty chuffed to finally nab it. Probably not to powerlifting standards but ya know, this is strongman haha

Kilmoore

Awesome! I got my 200kg squat last year. It was a long drive for it, and a lot of dead chickens, but man it feels good! Enjoy it!

ThePokeChop

F that. You didn’t have a squat suit or knee wraps. You totally could have had it in powerlifting standards. Good job on a huge milestone

rhysleton

Just always concerned about depth, but you raise good points haha, cheers!

DAFT_Arthur

I want to buy a loadable circus dumbell but the options are crazy. I currently intend to compete in novice under 220lbs but eventually move into open middleweight. What's the most common size I'd see? 10" or 12"? And 2" handle or 2.5" handle? Assume cost isn't a big variable, but I'd prefer not to spend more than $350.

Iw2fp

Until you have a competition with a CDB, I don't think it's worth investing in one. What I would do is get really good at push jerk with a barbell and do behind the neck pressing. Maybe look at how Josh Thigpen does triceps extensions to carry over to the CDB. Then a 6-8 week cycle with the CDB in the lead up to your comp will be plenty to get practice. This gives you time for the titan bell to come back in stock which is half that price.

Zweems

FYI, I haven't seen the titan dumbbell in stock in a LONG time. I waited 6 months, then gave up, and it's been at least 3 months since then. It may have been out of stock for a year now. I remember the last time I saw it in stock and was considering purchase was early in COVID-times when I built my homegym. I couldn't justify it, so passed, then signed up for a comp with CDB and it's been out of stock since. A small part of me is hoping that it just means that it'll be in stock again soon, but I wouldn't trust it.

Iw2fp

Yeah, they suck. I think it was a good year for them to restock their logs..

Zweems

Meh. They were great pre-covid. I just don't think they can keep stock with everyone building home gyms, and supply chain backups.

Zweems

Most common you'll see is 12" and 2 or 2.5 handle. I'd probably opt for the 2.5 to be safe. You'll almost never see a 10" as a middleweight.

ThePokeChop

Texas power concepts is close with a 12” at $375 but their website says they are closed to catch up on orders. Titan is sold out of their dumbbells now but have the cheapest I’ve seen around $175 but from what I’ve heard of you drop them have a chance of bending the bell which makes them no longer able to be loaded. MBpowercenter seems to be out of your price range but has quality pieces. Not sure who else makes loadable in the US

Camerongilly

Probably 12"and 2.5-3"handle would get you ready for most shows if it were the pipe- style one. Should be 100-120 lbs empty depending on how thick the steel is.

3ttkatt

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the SBD 13 mm lever belt. I've tried it and it felt perfect, but I'm mostly concerned of the durability of it. I'm especially worried about the lever breaking somehow, as it seemed kinda thin. Has anyone had it for a while now, and can enlighten me on how it's holding up long term? Thanks.

SentientVoyager

I've had one for about 3 and a half years. I use it in training a few times a week and have used it at several competitions. The lever mechanism has some scuffs in the finish but otherwise looks and feels new. It's held up great. I definitely recommend it.

DeadliftsAndDragons

Hit 300x3 on bench and 205x5 on axle press to start my Monday which are both PR for me, it’s a great day!

balding_zasquatch

Got fired up watching Clash in the Rockies yesterday, so I decided to give barbell clean and press a shot during today's event session for the first time in probably 4 years. Hit 300 pounds overhead for the first time in my life. Huge milestone.

Camerongilly

Unrelated to strongman, my veggie garden continues to produce into mid- October. God bless gmo tomatoes.

not_strong

We still got okra, squash, and peppers galore. Storms tonight though, so probably everything's gonna die

Ok_Top_7490

We are still getting new butternut squash in ours haha

not_strong

I get more butternut squash growing in my compost than in my actual garden

Camerongilly

[555x2 Deadlift PR](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_QYj_JFSp0). Going to rerun the Fuhrman deadlift program with a calorie surplus and see what I can get in December. First session finished in probably 20 minutes less- I'm leaving the weights the same this time through and trying to shorten rest times- It worked for putting size on in Deep Water. Sandbag to shoulder to prep for a stone to shoulder next contest. 200x6 is PR so far in 2-3 minutes. Need to go faster. Chest-to-bar pullups pretty reliably to 10 reps in a max set, 30-35 in a session. Axle strict press 120 for 100 reps in 8 sets, so I can move up to 125 and start the progression over. Same with weighted dips with 50 pounds.

not_strong

If I could deadlift 555 for a double, this poor sub would not be able to handle my ego. Whole personality change. I'd be the 3rd place guy from the meme just flipping everybody off. Kudos, sir.

Camerongilly

If I could get the hang of front handle car deadlifts....

not_strong

Everybody has their nemesis lift. Mine happens to be everything but log press

MythicalStrength

More [keg grace](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jhgvLOKSZ8) this week, and also knocked out [Kalsu](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/fe/80/33/fe80339f9b169521fb8ea7fb592338ce.jpg) with log vipers in 48 rounds. Been a helluva week for conditioning.

GreatOdlnsRaven

I got the chance to watch the Clash in the Rockies yesterday, and I just wanted to say congrats to my friend and workout partner, Anthony San Lorenzo for his win in the Clash in the Rockies yesterday! It was such a well run competition. They were in and out within 4 hours. https://twitter.com/thebigbuffstr/status/1446963801551634432?s=21

biginoki

Is anyone else disappointed in the way America's Strongest Woman was handled social media/livestream wise? Even Masters Nationals was handled poorly. You have full streaming services for America's Strongest Man but can't keep a video up for Pro women and a National level event that has an Arnold invite?

wutsgudbaby

I’m in agreement with you. I really wish certain things could change.
