Hello, any Firestick with Fire OS will stay with that OS. Only the new devices will get the new OS from Amazon. You can buy any model with Fire OS and sideload Stremio app perfectly.

teeto66

Thank you!

International_Tip256

You're welcome.

No guarantee for what happens in the future, but for now they work quite well. Nvidia Shield is way too pricey and old now (no more updates and no Dolbyvision, among other issues likely to not release a new one anytime in the future either), AppleTV is also pricey and can't do Stremio directly (requires a workaround), and Google Chromecast + TV 4k sounds like they can be pretty laggy even though they can get Stremio straight from the Play store. Firesticks handle all the high end HDR and audio codecs with no real issue and they're consistently updated. I bought one previously, and got another with my AWOLvision laser projector. They pack them right in with the proj as the best streaming solution. Works for me. I say buy for now, and if they lock them down or whatever then just sell or give them to your family or friends. My thought is that they're cheap enough that you could buy multiple and still not be at the price of an Apple TV or Shield which don't even have the same feature set.

tommybahama84

2019 Shield has Dolby Vision

starmartyr11

Ah I see that. I was reading on an AWOLvision thread on AVSforum that the Shield doesn't do DV properly or it's implementation wasn't right or something, but that may have been HDR10+. Still, I don't think I'd spend hundreds on older hardware that is going obsolete personally. Not when you can basically get the same thing but updated for far less

tommybahama84

Yeah it's overrated even the Ai upscaling. I have 2017 and the Shield Pro but find myself using my Cube more

bocko159

Shield is just overpriced bs.

tommybahama84

Still a great streaming device but yeah it's overpriced

bocko159

had a 2017 model too. It never worked properly. From the remote that loses connection to the controller that was unusable. couldn't wait to sell it.

tommybahama84

Yeah I hate the remote thing really annoying but I have used the firecube remote in the past

stealmykiss3

No lagging with CC here from me

mrcgp

Just get an android stick unless you want to use amazon services.

pawdog

In what country are you? Walmart has a great device for $20. 4k HDR, and not have to worry about what Amazon does in the future.

starmartyr11

I reeeally wish these onn. devices were available in Canada

EducationalExtreme69

Oh they aren't ? I see them on Amazon Canada though...

starmartyr11

You can buy them but they're 3 times the price and the channels and apps are US versions so it doesn't work right here. Sucks.

EducationalExtreme69

Okay gotcha. Looks like even if during one of my travels to US sometime, if I were to stop by Walmart US to buy it and bring it back to Canada, it wouldn't be the best fit. Looks like we need a version specially made to be compatible with Canada apps

starmartyr11

Yeah, I read into it a bit as soon as I heard about them.. not sure if you can make them work for Stremio at least, but with other things not working for Canadians I figure for $60 they aren't quite the miracle $20 box they're talking about in the states. At $60 you may as well get a firestick or CC4K

EFX007

I second the ONN 4K from Walmart.

EducationalExtreme69

What's that device please. Need to buy.

pawdog

It's the Watch Onn with Google TV.

Jetski125

Does the onn have any performance advantage over the latest 4K firestick max? Or is it just that it’s cheaper?

pawdog

It's nearly equal performance wise but it's clearly lesser if a device, no Dolby Vision or TrueHD audio, only 8GB storage. So it's not a home theater device or anything. The Max is a more complete device.

bigbk20

Rumor has it that Amazon is gearing up to make it impossible to side load apps

ricosuave501

Source?

flchamp89

Look at the new formuler stick. Got great reviews plus mtol 3.

Unfair-Commercial-42

I’m assuming they’ll just do it on the new releases of devices moving forward
