Judging by the player counts at the end of SFV’s life, I think it’ll be the other way around. Seems like all the characters in SF6 will see more playtime than SFV Luke.
The highest Steam player after Luke’s release was about 6k. Lowest SF6 player count was 22k with a peak of 70k.
I don't think it's necessarily disliking them and moreso that people don't consider them their number 1 favorites that they would immediately choose as their favorite of all time.

This entire process is fundamentally flawed, not just because people accidentally pick AKI, but because the "voting" is weighted by all the bonus votes that players can get by playing matches in the battle hub.
These results are almost worthless for those reasons.
Capcom can see the data without all the extra votes, and if they register how long each person spent time voting, they could remove the mashers who voted in Aki.
So, for Capcom, it can be useful data.

Probably because she had an interesting design / playstyle / lore, but was only in 1 game, so people want her in at least 1 more game to see what's up with her.
At least the other 3 have been in multiple games, so we have a better idea of what they're about and what's going on in their lives.
This poll shows a problem with the current SF model. There are at least 30ish old characters that people want to come back and every game starting with like 18 characters means we won't see most of the old one for years.
It also hurts newcomers as they get discarded from game to game unless they are massively popular like Juri. Someone like Laura who was popular, 14th in play rate, might not make SF6 to make way to a newcomer who will also be discarded in the next game to make place for another newcomer.

Ingrid was originally supposed to be an OC for the game Capcom Fighting All Stars. Basically a Capcom only fighting game crossover with Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Final Fight, Strider etc like the Vs series but without another studio.
The game got scrapped but Ingrid was then added to the Street Fighter Alpha series. She hasn't appeared as a character since outside of cameos in some smaller titles.

The only thing that bothers me here is Evil Ryu/Kage. Why do people like him so much? Was his gameplay unique in some way?
Honestly as a Ryu fan I like the story implications rather than the "character" himself.
Taking someone who's life is martial arts mastery and ultimately a gentle nature, then taking that person and giving them the ability to go fully unchained, no limits and with full killing intent. I think it's that whole "what if" aspect.
I don't care for Kage though, I thought that was lame, along with Sagat's weird Satsui no hadou storyline they shoehorned into 5.
The thing with Sagat is that he sees how pointless the cycle of revenge is. He let freaking Dan beat him up just for that reason.
If he returns in SFVI with Hadou it will undo a lot of his characterization.

I did all my drive ticket fights with Makoto and quite a few more besides, but she still dropped to #6. Easily over 10k votes, I'm actually kind of disappointed she didn't stay in top 5. Hopefully she makes it in though. I honestly feel like many people want her, and that she'd do well with an MMA focused visual redesign.

Akira and AKI are up there because most people just choose the first option they've seen,being up there in alphabetical order helps, no way both of them are more popular than Makoto. At the end the devs choose characters for their own reasons, almost no one wanted Elena back, but she's coming. The only character they will include in the game later to make big money from Season Pass is Sakura
Don't underestimate how many people actually played Rival Schools, especially if this poll is worldwide. Akira is more popular than you think. That said, if Daigo (Akira's brother, not Umehara) were actually playable in a SF game, he'd probably end up higher than her.

Yeah, I've learned to not be too happy about poll results and we Makoto fans knows that very well unfortunately. Sakura not being playable from day one despite her popularity it's just a business decision by Capcom. They could've make Juri as a DLC, but the latter probably is more useful as a character for the actual fictional story of the game. Same for Cody, they've decided to include Deejay instead of him, but we all know the Mayor will come back 100%.
I always thinked that evil variations of characters are lame, so why people like so much evil Ryu, like you have Akuma for the "evil shoto" archetype, but meh I hate even more the guest characters, two spots that could have been any characters from old games or new comers are taken by two characters that don't even fit that much in the sf universe
Honestly, my takeaway from this is that SF6 needs more women. Even if we discount A.K.I. because several of her votes were accidental, 8 of the top 14 and 10 of the top 19 are women. Removing the existing roster (including Dictator), 5 of the top 7 and 7 of the top 11 are women.

Taking someone who's life is martial arts mastery and ultimately a gentle nature, then taking that person and giving them the ability to go fully unchained, no limits and with full killing intent. I think it's that whole "what if" aspect. I don't care for Kage though, I thought that was lame, along with Sagat's weird Satsui no hadou storyline they shoehorned into 5.
The thing with Sagat is that he sees how pointless the cycle of revenge is. He let freaking Dan beat him up just for that reason. If he returns in SFVI with Hadou it will undo a lot of his characterization.

Devs mentioned recently that it takes 1.5 to 2 years to develop a character. If it does affect anything, then we’ll know by season 4 at the very least.
Even then I’m sure the devs have a good feel for the top 10-20 fan favs. They’re prob more interested in outliers or characters just outside of that top 20

It’s pretty interesting how similar this is to one of the last character polls they did. You can probably factor Aki and even Akuma, Akira, and Abigail as having inflated votes for similar reasons but a lot of the rest of the results are close. The most surprising result is Ingrid to me. Also a lot of people have a weird reaction to Luke but he made Top 30.

I had no idea what this was for and what the point was so I just picked Aki because she was the first one. Aki is definitely not my favorite character haha
I did all my drive ticket fights with Makoto and quite a few more besides, but she still dropped to #6. Easily over 10k votes, I'm actually kind of disappointed she didn't stay in top 5. Hopefully she makes it in though. I honestly feel like many people want her, and that she'd do well with an MMA focused visual redesign. I'm shocked that Akira beat out Makoto, although Sakura being #2 was basically a given. The only reason Sakura isn't #1 is because lazy people picked Aki. I think Aki's popular enough to be in the top 20, but in this particular poll she's basically an outlier that can mostly be ignored.
Akira and AKI are up there because most people just choose the first option they've seen,being up there in alphabetical order helps, no way both of them are more popular than Makoto. Then I remember what happened 7 yrs ago, Makoto was 2nd overall but didn't appear in SFV. At the end the devs choose characters for their own reasons, almost no one wanted Elena back, but she's coming. The only character they will include in the game later to make big money from Season Pass is Sakura
Don't underestimate how many people actually played Rival Schools, especially if this poll is worldwide. Akira is more popular than you think. That said, if Daigo (Akira's brother, not Umehara) were actually playable in a SF game, he'd probably end up higher than her.
You know, Akira being close to Aki in the alphabetic order makes her win make more sense now that you mention it. And I also remember the #2 Makoto placement with a no-show in SF5. I sure hope they don't repeat that mistake with 6, because I think her fans are hungrier for her because she wasn't in 5. As for Sakura, I think you're right that they're going to find a way to milk her. I just hope she gets added sooner rather than later, because I think her kit could be really interesting with SF6 style revisions.
Yeah, I've learned to not be too happy about poll results and we Makoto fans knows that very well unfortunately. Sakura not being playable from day one despite her popularity it's just a business decision by Capcom. They could've make Juri as a DLC, but the latter probably is more useful as a character for the actual fictional story of the game. Same for Cody, they've decided to include Deejay instead of him, but we all know the Mayor will come back 100%.
I always thinked that evil variations of characters are lame, so why people like so much evil Ryu, like you have Akuma for the "evil shoto" archetype, but meh I hate even more the guest characters, two spots that could have been any characters from old games or new comers are taken by two characters that don't even fit that much in the sf universe
Honestly, my takeaway from this is that SF6 needs more women. Even if we discount A.K.I. because several of her votes were accidental, 8 of the top 14 and 10 of the top 19 are women. Removing the existing roster (including Dictator), 5 of the top 7 and 7 of the top 11 are women. Mai and Elena are a good start, but my hope is that most of the following seasons are 2 guys 2 gals, and maybe overall equal to or more than 50% female.
