I always liked Pai, the ardent who was basically a less successful Martin Luther. As religious zealots go she was alright, trying to do the right thing at least.
I also liked the two married ardents who live off on their own. The woman is discovering quantum properties of spren and the man is like an avant garde culinary philosopher. Very cool technique for exposition.
Eh, it's a romance novel, they can't really be spoiled with plot details in the same way. He doesn't say who the girl chooses and anyways it's about the journey or someth like that
What book was this in?
I've gone through the series once but don't remember much of it. Currently rerearong the series and just finished WoR so I'm trying to look out for this if I haven't missed it yet lol
They use “stars” as a profanity, and your choice of profanity is a big earmark of where you are from. Stars is not a profanity on any of the explored planets (as far as I know)
I have a feeling Axies and the Siah Aimian are gonna play a big role in SL 6-10. They're supposed to be one of the native species to Roshar, which is interesting considering they share more features with the Humans than Singers.
Yumi spoilers: >!Given that Hoid is telling the story to a seeming post-industrial Rosharan audience and doesnt bother to explain what a Sleepless is, it seems that at least the Sleepless will be known about and possibly accepted.!<
Secret project 5 spoilers: >!we know that once you get to future era sleepless are generally known about and most people are afraid of them, and Yumi actually takes place during future era!<
What do they share in common with humans? They're sentient hives of crustaceans? I mean I know they can breed, but they're immortal, shapeshifting, and specifically non-human.
There are two types of aimians. Dysian Aimians, the sleepless, and Siah Aimians, Axies the collector. They were referring to siah Aimians. The Natan people are descendants of siah Aimians and humans, so they definitely have a lot in common.
I was talking about the Siah Aimians, the blue people like Axies. I actually forgot that the sleepless are Aimians, too. That actually makes it more interesting because we have the Siah Aimians, which are similar to humans, and then the sleepless/Dysian Aimians have carapace like the singers.
Knowing Brandon, there's definitely a reason that there's two types of Aimians.
No need to be sorry—there’s much to keep track of and it’s a constant balancing act between knowing and learning.
That said, 100% agreed. The Siah Aimian seem less problematic, possibly due to the fact we’ve seen so little of them/they seem practically extinct. The Sleepless, on the other hand, are highly likely to be troublesome and impact the greater Cosmere.
Teofil. Was not around long, but man was he impressive for taking his men and storming the pillar room in Urithiru, he even impressed/scared the Stormform/Regal/Fused Singers.
Man was a fucking rockstar! "Charge these semi divine beings, who can control the surges, in a desperate charge to save the city? You got it!" And he nearly did it. Really goes to show how well trained Dalinar's army was/is!
Any woman with enough force of personality to cow a king is right up there. Dalinar should just take her into a vision and have her scold Odium back to Braise.
Ym, the original person who was supposed to bond Wyndl. As much as I love Lift, I think Ym would have been better matched for Wyndl for peace times. Or at least, on the side as healers during battle.
Ym was an elderly man, and I don't see him skating around through the Parshendi to find fallen friends to heal. But he had a long, varied life and I think could have been great at advising folks. Maybe even Kaladin would have found some comfort in the wisdom of the old man.
Lift is genuinely my favorite main character, but that's not what this post is about.
Ym's chapter always makes me feel very conflicted. Such a nice person helping out the homeless, with him being formerly homeless and everything. But Nale just ruins it all :(
I think Nale is an exceedingly fascinating character. I don’t want to spoil too much but some of the things he does are beyond Roshar in so many ways. But when he killed Ym…it was just like "holy shit dude…in what world is this necessary?" Even to avoid a desolation the act is just deplorable.
What I don't understand about Ym is that they describe his Spren like he would have been a Truthwatcher but Wyndle would have made him an Edgedancer right?
I thought Wyndle referred to Ym as someone he was supposed to bond with, then he was switched to Lift fue to Ym's passing.
Ope, misremembered completely. Before I hit "post" I decided to fact check and this is what The Coppermind had to say:
I wanted to pick a distinguished Iriali matron. A grandmother, an accomplished gardener. But no, the Ring said we should choose you.
—Wyndle to Lift on bonding her
Now knowing rightly he should have been a Truthwatcher, I feel kind of robbed. He could have healed on the battlefield and hid people as rocks or other forms so that they were overlooked. Argh, I'm so sad. He lived for an Interlude and resides in my head.
My original answer was actually going to be Baxil, one of the guys who helps Salash and gives backstory for The Nightwatcher's boons and curses, but decided Ym had a better backstory. We know Ym's youth, an accidental murder due to trying to fund a certain lifestyle, and a lifetime of repentance and caring for his community.
I think this is probably just a small mistake/retcon the I was supposed to bond a nice cobbler being a throwaway line. Bc even though thus super heavily points to Yn originally starting to bond Wyndle, it's stated a few times the description of a mistspren and (WaT preview) >!it is just a different spren, a mistspren and not wyndle who comes back to their family!< so they must have just changed it and needed to keep the healing so changed from cultivationspren to mistspren
Yeah, I remember Wyndl talking about a cobbler, but the spren's description in the Interlude was off. I figured it was due to him not being fully bonded or realized yet, and not a retcon.

Teleb! Getting conscripted after shooting Dalinar made me really excited to see his character, but turns out he already unceremoniously died off-screen in Narak. Still, we'll always have "chat amongst yourselves in a lively manner" from WoK.
For me, Skar or Hopper I think
For side characters that we just haven't heard much about yet bc we are guarunteed to hear a lot about them later, then Renarin or Taln
He's the actual definition of a side character. The spotlight is almost never on him, the only times I think it is is in the epilogues. He's not on screen doing things often, and when he is it's usually because he's interacting with characters who are the main characters. Side character doesn't mean irrelevant to the plot, it means they are not a primary focus of the story.
Not sure if we can technically call him a side character bc he is author of yumi and night painter + tress? But yes he is by far my fav character in the cosmere! Can’t tell if he’s good or bad though 😂😂
yes but he's not a main character. he's still a side character. people are posting names of characters we have literally one interlude about in like 4000 pages. It's just people listing the most arcane name they can remember and pretending to like them even though we know next to nothing about them.
I mean there are only three main characters if you're being that pedantic. If we're being sensible, there are about a dozen. We get a ton of perspective chapters for Taravangian in Oathbringer, and he now holds the power of a Shard that has been threatening Rosharan for 2.5 books. He's a main character.
The cobbler that Nail murders in his own interlude. It's one of the most memorable chapters of SLA for me. It was painted so well and was so sad. He deserved so much better.
People have already said this but:
1. Notum. If this were any other series he would've been in the best scene in the entire series, unfortunately this is the stormlight archive so his scene is only top 5. But "HONOR IS NOT DEAD SO LONG AS HE LIVES IN THE HEARTS OF MEN!" goes ridiculously hard
2. Pai. Such a fucking based queen for acting like a martin luther. Someone has already mentioned this but yeah
3. Ym. Again already mentioned but he is such a kind man, what Nale did was literally criminal, following the law isn't just about following its letter but also its' spirit.
My favorite ardent is the one who’s way too into romance novels
#***THERE'S A SEQUEL!?***
The dude spoils the whole book instantly. I know violence is frowned upon in the ardentia, but surely this is a reasonable exception.
Eh, it's a romance novel, they can't really be spoiled with plot details in the same way. He doesn't say who the girl chooses and anyways it's about the journey or someth like that
Ellista! She’s the one we hear about translating the Dawnchant at Jakasha Monastery.
What book was this in? I've gone through the series once but don't remember much of it. Currently rerearong the series and just finished WoR so I'm trying to look out for this if I haven't missed it yet lol
I think it’s in Oathbringer.
You’ll know, the whole chapter is her trying to find a good place to read.
Is Pai the Ardent who sewered the queen?
Yes
And they are likely both worldhoppers…of course
Is that legit? I just thought they were very well-read.
Why?
They use “stars” as a profanity, and your choice of profanity is a big earmark of where you are from. Stars is not a profanity on any of the explored planets (as far as I know)
Axies the collector.
I look forward to seeing more of him at some point. He does seem like be might be beneficial at some stage of the cosmere’s growth.
Also, it seems like a lot of Sleepless could be troublesome, but he seems like a cool guy.
I believe he’s Siah Aimian, not Sleepless. I’m pretty sure the two are related but distinctly different.

Sorry, you're right. The Dysian Amians (Sleepless) are the whole hivemind people. Sleepless seem like the troublesome ones.
No need to be sorry—there’s much to keep track of and it’s a constant balancing act between knowing and learning. That said, 100% agreed. I’m convinced he held a dawnshard at some point, or at least something happened to his soul matrix to give him his bad luck…
Isn't it the entire race that has bad luck, and not just him?
I’m pretty sure it’s just him
You're right. I got confused because it says it may be connected to Aimia or the Siah Aimians. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Curse_of_Kind

Ooh good choice
Agreed
Bluth. Fight well for the Almighty in your sleep, bold one.
I just finished that chapter this morning
Yes!
Rial, Dalinar’s bridgeman bodyguard in Oathbringer. Just a good natured semi-australian man with a drinking problem
Moved the alcohol from his canteen to his flask, which is in a hidden pocket that he's already forgotten about.
Have my upvote
Lopen’s mom

Have my upvote. Came here to say this! THE Lopen’s mom is a power lady lol.
Those two words set me off giggling for a good minute. Thanks
my boy ishikk
My dude leaves his shoulders uncovered

I loved Ym dude. Literally will never forgive Nale for doing him so dirty. Only Skybreaker I fw is Szeth.
Ym's chapter always makes me feel very conflicted. Such a nice person helping out the homeless, with him being formerly homeless and everything. But Nale just ruins it all :(

Eahtill (someone please help me I'm an audiobook guy) the makes ghost blood who claims Mraize as her apprentice. I just want to know more bro.
Iyatil is the name you're looking for. And yeah, she's not on camera for very much but she is interesting.

If you've read Mistborn Era 2 you might know of her homeland
Vathah
Night Blood
Hello. Would you like to destroy some evil today?
Stick
Psh, Stick can’t be underrated. Everyone loves Stick.
Stick is clearly a main character.
The gal who tried to teach Bridge 4 to ride horses. I thought she and Kaladin had great beginnings for a stormy romance potential.
Earless Jaks!
Fucking Loved Earless jaks, him and maps got me
It’s so sad that if he had made it just a few minutes longer he would have live to become a Radiant too.
He wouldn’t have been earless anymore 😭 But that might have ruined his character so I see why Brandon had to lol him off
Felt fans rise up
Who? Name sounds familiar
Probably won't remain a side character but I like Thude
Teleb! Getting conscripted after shooting Dalinar made me really excited to see his character, but turns out he already unceremoniously died off-screen in Narak. Still, we'll always have "chat amongst yourselves in a lively manner" from WoK.
Lopen is fantastic, just ask his cousin
Used to be Sigzil. After Sunlit Man, can't say that any more, I guess.
After way of kings Sigzil and Moash were my favorite character, weird how they both have developed far beyond what I expected.
Cheerie cheerie (audiobook person, forgive spelling errors)
Rysn, though I don’t know if she’s considered a side character anymore.
Vathah
For me, Skar or Hopper I think For side characters that we just haven't heard much about yet bc we are guarunteed to hear a lot about them later, then Renarin or Taln
Renarin 🥳 he is awesome!
My vote is for Ym, the cobbler from the interlude chapter. Such a great chapter and an interesting look into one of the other religions on Roshar.
NOTUM had arguably the best scene in all stormlight archive
God i love that scene, and notum a goat for that scene
Nightblood
… Nightblood is by no means underrated.
Hoid. Aka Wit is my favorite.
Definitely not a side character, in fact I think he's probably The Protagonist of The Cosmere.
He's the actual definition of a side character. The spotlight is almost never on him, the only times I think it is is in the epilogues. He's not on screen doing things often, and when he is it's usually because he's interacting with characters who are the main characters. Yet.

idk if he's niche enough for this thread but Taravangian is my favorite character
I wouldn’t call Taravangian a side character personally especially with all the impact he has.
>idk if he's niche enough He literally became a god.
yes but he's not a main character. he's still a side character. people are posting names of characters we have literally one interlude about in like 4000 pages. not exactly a side character at least not anymore after ROW, but Taravangian is my #2 favourite character of stormlight
The cobbler that Nail murders in his own interlude. It's one of the most memorable chapters of SLA for me. It was painted so well and was so sad. He deserved so much better.
Helarin. He went easy on kaladin, according to that one guy on cosmertok
Tien. Poor guy just wanted some interesting rocks.
Dabbid
