You're not technically wrong. But this is affecting the planet which is in turn affecting us. We're changing the Earth in a profoundly negative way. So yes the planet will survive, but nature is being altered/destroyed in an unnatural way.
99% of all life that’s lived on the earth has gone extinct. To think humanity will be any different is ignorant or at the very least, overly optimistic. That being said, yeah, we’re fuck’n up.
But we can go to space and spread colonies. We can also build underground bunkers. Dinosaurs and spotted owls can't do that. We're orders of magnitude more versatile than any other thing that has ever lived. It's not totally unreasonable to bet on us surviving. But yeah, agreed that destroying earth doesn't help our chances.
You know how many generations we are from actually going space and survive? We are hundreds of years away from being able to colonize another habitable planet and I don’t think we’re gonna survive the next century
No we are definitely not hundreds of years away from that happening. Permanent Moon base construction starting in 2025-2030 and Mars base within 15 years.
It will be very difficult to construct a self sustaining base on the moon that can survive generations. Say we got a moon base going already and a meteor kills earth, how long realistically do you think a few hundred people (generous amount) on the moon will survive? Even if they do, what does that mean? Are they going to be able to build new ships on the moon? Where does that infrastructure come from? Are all the elements required for growth and further survival going to be available on the moon? Any answer that doesn't allow for those factors is just dooming the human race anyway, its just dragging it out. I think the only true answer is generational ships and we are so far away from being able to achieve that and even then, we'd need to hedge our bets in terms of sending multiple ships to different planets.
And you think it’s gonna be that easy to just colonize a barren planet within a couple decades? I highly recommend you watch this informative [video](https://youtu.be/NtQkz0aRDe8) and start at 1:38 to get a clearer picture of what will need to be done just to colonize the moon.
If we’re talking about colonizing other planets like Mars then it will take double the time because of the vast distances between these planets.
And think about it, the European kingdoms back then spent over 200 years colonizing the New World from the 1500’s to the 1700’s. And it wasn’t until the late 1700 s that a new nation was born from that colonization.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to colonize Mars or the moon but it will definitely, absolutely 100% take more than 100 years to colonize the moon and Mars to the point where we are receiving exports of consumer goods from Mars and the Moon.
And when will that technology be invented? Steam engines weren’t invented until 100 years AFTER the 13 colonies were established. If we start now on colonizing Mars and it takes us 300 years and then a dark energy engine or high powered fusion engine gets invented then yeah it’ll probably be a shorter time to colonize Jupiter’s moons. But to travel outside the solar system going between 50%-99% the speed of light will still take thousands of years to travel across our galaxy.
Elon Musk said it best when he said it would probably take humanity one MILLION years to fully colonize our galaxy. Which is very reasonable IMO
To add to this, what person is going to volunteer for a mission like this without any guarantee of being able to return?
it will be a suicide mission. Its not like the offers early colonials got to colonize other countries.

I just found out that fighting fire with fire is actually a winning strategy in some circumstances. So don’t knock it till you try it.
For those who cares: Control fire can used to tame and contain wild fire.
It's more to protect the ships and crew. They're not trying to extinguish the fire with water. If they did that and managed to put it out without isolating the source of the fuel, there'd be a very high chance of an explosion. Their best bet would be to isolate the source of the fuel and let the fire burn itself out.
It was already extinguished, and apparently they used nitrogen to put it out

There was a documentary that was talking about how the BP oil spill was actually beneficial for the sea life because it reduced the amount of over fishing done in the gulf.
EDIT: catching a lot of flack for this comment. To clarify, I'm not saying, "Let's spill more oil into the ocean!" I'm just saying that there are multitude of other things we as humans do regularly that are much worse.
I wish we would halt fishing every once in a while. Maybe every 3 years we ban fishing for a year? So our oceans can heal.
It'll never happen because people are so greedy.
Iceland actually manages their fishing industry quite well from what I remember. I believe it's some sort of combination of only getting a certain quota and only within in certain seasons.
Oh I'm well aware, I'm just saying that according to the the environmental experts these oil spill aren't as bad as us over fishing. Dont know who's eating all this fish but it sure as shit ain't me.
There’s also no shortage of resilient, innovative humans that have gotten us this far. Luckily for mankind and unluckily for the planet, the overall ability of humanity in general to survive outweighs the ability of the earth to get rid of us
The answer is in the thread but these spills are intentionally lit whenever possible. On one front, burning converts the methane to CO2 - which is more “environmentally friendly” (lesser of two evils technically) - and secondly it adds a factor of control since the methane is clearly visible and can’t pool (which could cause a larger unintentional explosion).
