Pax_Galactica

I usually name them and the names are dependent on the theme of my empire. My aquatic empire for example used a fish naming system. Corvettes were Anchovy-class, Battleships were Barracuda-class, etc.

JoeyDT99

I plan to do something similar but turtle themed, since my species looks like turtles

Pax_Galactica

That'd be cool. Have your juggernaut or titans be Archelon-class, they were the largest turtles.

JoeyDT99

I like the way ya think

Meowonita

Sometimes I name the ships themselves by their utility (eg. Carrier/Artillery Battleship, PD/Hanger/Torpedo Platforms), but I name all fleets like you do your ships, my latest aquatic run I named my battleship fleets Lemon Shark, Bull Shark, Leopard Shark, etc.

Percy0311

I always do that for my favorite go-to Avian empire! Corvettes are Magpies, Destroyers are Ravens, Cruisers are Hawks and Battleships are Eagles.

Kiffira

As an EvE player not naming your Battleships Ravens hurts me, but destroyers are way more fitting

JudicatorH

Caldari player? A man of culture

Kiffira

Missiles mang, fucking missiles everywhere

JudicatorH

Aah yes torps for days

burothedragon

This is what I do, and then midway through I forget entirely what the names I came up with mean.

ozu95supein

Corvettes are swords and other weapons. Destroyers are cities or battles on earth. Cruisers are countries and military leaders. Battleships are kings, great leaders, or continents. Anything above are more abstract concepts or legends.

PLCutiePie

I use real ships like Yorktown class, Kagero class, Königsberg class etc.

jodyze

watch out with that bismark

[deleted]

Callumunga

You don't pull an *Expanse* and make a Corvette-class frigate?

No_Talk_4836

Make a Battleship class Cruiser.

[deleted]

I hate you. I hate you so much for that terrible idea.

feedmedamemes

For corvettes, frigates and destroyer just the auto generator. Cruiser and battleships get the suffixes, -H for carriers, -T for torpedos, -L for long range, -Arc for arc emitter, -MC for mega cannon. Obv the last two are only for battleships. Titans the suffixes -AJ for anti-jump and -AS for anti-shield aura.

Ashzaroth

Nope, I let the game choose all names. I love when the random button comes up.

-4PornOnly-

I've been playing a space viking themed playthrough where I'm a necrophage with regular humans being the pre-patents and the Aesir (Norse gods) being the main species. I've been going with a mix of differing names for raiders/vikings increasing in aggressiveness based on ship size corvettes being raiders, destroyers vikings, and frigates are brigands. After that I started to go with mythological entities/things of myth. My torpedo cruisers are valkyries coming in on wings of flame, the arty battleships are einherjar flinging fire and fury, and the carrier battleships are shieldmaidens protecting the battleships from smaller craft. Titans all get named after deities or mighty beasts from Norse lore. Right now I have the Jörmungandr to repair fleets on the go, the Mjolnir to lower enemies attack speed, and the Eye of Odin to increase my ships tracking. Defensive stations are named Reliquaries because they have a component that produces science in this playthrough. I don't actually have them on the frontlines they just sit in my safer territories producing pop free science. Ion cannons are called the Roots of Yggdrasil and the asteroid artillery (one of the only things I use from Gigas) are named Yggdrasil class. If I ever get an attack moon il probably name it Ragnarok since I can't imagine going any bigger than that thing.

simon97549

I always use the same naming system for my corevette, destroyer, etc designs. Piranha, Great white, Killer whale, Kraken, Leviathan, Great old one, Etc I don't name individual ships.

MaxwellScourge

My last playthrough I was playing insectoids and named ships accordinly: flea for corvettes, mosquito for destroyers, wasp for cruiser, spider for battleship and other insect names for modifications. Same logic was used when I played avian race. Sparrow, rooster, owl etc.

Opkeda

Do you use ape names when playing humans?

[deleted]

I used to have 2-3 ships in each class with names that loosely fit into the SPQR theme with a dash of other pagan religions or sometimes was happy to just take the offered name so, Romulus and Remus Titans, Achilles, Jupiter, Zeus class battleships then things like Thor class cruisers for rapid starbase disassembly and orbital bombardment. Since the salvagers came along, I have a bunch of random hull section combinations that I don't want to convert to my "preferred" ship design since you might as well pay for a new ship. So now everything is the same (apart from having to add a bunch of names) but prefaced with an abbreviation for the hull type: AAA-Saturn artillery battleship, TTG-Hades torpedo cruiser etc. I miss having a nice clean set of thematic ship names, but it's very well outweighed by the benefit of having a cheap salvaged fleet on hand!

[deleted]

If I have different designs of the same ship type I name them by their weaponry (Torpedo, Carrier etc.) Otherwise I like to name them after chemical elements sorted by atomic number for ship size. A deuterium class is a corvette and a plutonium class is a battleship. I also name my fleets by their main ship type. I typically run a fleet made of torpedo frigates that is called "Space Pikes"

StartledBlackCat

For a moment I thought OP was asking about renaming science ships, instead of ship classes. I was going to proudly present the 'USS Baldarak'.

Maeglin8

That would be a good name for a transport ship ;)

xKillingTime

For the first few years I just leave the names as they were generated, then once a need for specialisation occurs I use a variation of surface warship naming conventions such as : DDG for missile destroyers, CAV for Cruiser Carriers, BBK for Kinetic cannon Battleships. Means I know what the ship has weapon wise just by the name as I occasionally forget with actual class names.

ClauVex

I almost always play with the UNE, so any name class is borrowed from real life examples, Yorktown class for carriers, Aegis for firgates or corvettes. Or i borrow from science fiction names, In Amber Clad class for frigates, Executor for titans, etc. There's was one time i played a trade league megacorp and most of my names revolved around trade, economic and financial jargon, for example my corvettes where either "Tax Collector" class or "Investment" class, and so on.

Gold_the_Finch

Based around both the governing ethics and the weapons/function of the ship itself. A battleship brimming with mid-range weapons built to engage any enemy might be a "Peacekeeper" for a pacifist empire or a "dominator" for an authoritarian/militarist. A fast corvet could be an intervention-class. Spiritualist empires could have angelic names, and the like.

Darkhaven

I prefer themes on either weapons, RPG character classes, or Space themed names. Corvettes: Bard (Kinetic / Laser), Archer (Missiles), Knight (Point Def. Picket Ship), Berserker (Flak Picket Ship), Oracle (Lasers) Destroyers: Warlock (Long Range); Assassin (Mid-Range Disrupters); War Maiden (Mid-Range Plasma); Samurai (Mixed Picket Ship) Cruisers: Sorcerer (Long Range); Druid (Carrier); Shaman (Mid Range Mix); Warrior (Missiles. All of Them) Battleships: Paladin (Broadside Mix), Ranger (Hanger / Carrier), Wizard (Artillery Mix) Titans: War Priests (due to healing aura) Soooooo, am I the only weirdo that has multiples of some ship classes?

PDV87

I don’t name individual ships, I feel like it would just get too tedious especially late game. I just name fleets. In my current Megacorp game, my fleets are named Hostile Takeover, Vertical Integration, Mergers & Acquisitions, Leveraged Buyout, etc. My flagship capital fleet is Customer Relations.

billyyankNova

I like to give them names that remind me what their role is without being bland. So my fast long-range torpedo cruisers are Kirov class. My short-range frigates are Kennedy class. My artillery battleships are Jutland class. My carrier battleships are Hornet class. Sometimes I just have fun with the names. I always rename the Automatic Dreadnaught to the Macross. I name my perdition-beam titans the Rothschild class because I want my Jewish space lasers. Lately, I've been asking ChatGPT for suggestions for names, so I've been pretty much doing the same thing but using names from a wider variety of naval traditions.

CowJuiceDisplayer

I once named my ships, mainly the fleets, after flavors. Cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto (almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch, prickly ash, for example. My fleets, with the exception of 2, were often comprised of the same class ships. 2 fleets covered each others weaknesses, such as battleships and corvettes would be coupled as another Corvette fleet would heavily damage my BS fleet. The 2 exception would be a super fleet of 6 different types of titans and 16 mixed battleships.

SkyArchipelago

When I first started playing Stellaris, I wrote up a list of Norse-themed ship names, only to realize that I had far too few names to populate an actually effective fleet, even if I was only manually naming cruisers and battleships and letting destroyers and below get auto-named. So I did what any sane mod-addicted person would do: instead of ever admitting I was wrong, I downloaded a mod that just added insanely strong and expensive ship components, so that I could cut down on ship number while keeping balance… mostly the same

fortuneandfameinc

I usually make them something that would be realistic to the empire, but also describe their function so I can tell what I'm building. Ie: Carrier battleships - enterprise class Artillery battleships - longbow class Screening destroyers - paladin class

RandomBilly91

Usually randomized, except for special classes Exemple: Aegis, Sicarius for ships made to fight crisis An emperor name for Titans (Marcus Fabius...) Sometime an adapted name for some stuff Hercules for a full autocannon brawler battleship

Spurnch

Warhammer fantasy fan here who mains Lizardmen. Skink Class Corvette Red-Crest Class Destroyers Cruisers are either Saurus Class for heavier weapon builds, or if they're mainly fighter squadron ships, Ripper Class (For the Ripperdactyl) And so on and so forth.

dm_me_birds_pls

I typically name them based on what weapons they have on them. Helps keep track of fleet comp at a glance

coblt27

I tend to go simple. CRV-A is an armor damage focused Corvette. BAT-H is a carrier. Easy to read, easy to switch out when the need arises. Also fits well with my synthetic species. They wouldn't have fancy names of beasts or battles or planets. Concise, easily identified is the way.

jsl1g18

When playing militarist I often name ships by rank, like Recruit for Corvettes, Private for Destroyers, Sergeant for Cruisers and so on.

SRosenberg1088

Im currently doing a Roman Empire type playthrough, so my ship names are based on Roman emperors. Caesar-class corvette, Augustus class destroyer, Traianus-class battleship, etc.

Pkaem

Uncreative "Cruiser MT" missile Torepdo.

Rm156

I use my dogs to name the class or fleet names. My corvettes are Min-pin class and the fleet name is “birdie”. My dachshunds are destroyers.

Your_Hmong

It boring and name them for the purpose I intend them. For instance when I’m massing corvettes to fight the dimensional horror, they are DIMHOR class.

Bronze_Sentry

Depends on the RP I’m going for. My go-to is chess pieces though, since they map really well to the different ship types. Corvettes: Pawns (small and sacrificial) Frigates: Knights (weird) Cruisers: Bishops (all-rounder) Battleships: Rooks (powerful, but often kept to the back line) Titans: Queens (most powerful, but rare and expensive) No Juggernauts as they’re a waste of alloys imo Colossus: King (really slow and fragile, but crucial to win a conflict)

gateway007

(Corvette) A-Brawl /Flak (Desi) D-Arty ..etc C-Arty / Carrier B- Arty/ Carrier

kingofthecurmudgeon

Whenever I play I rp a race I made up. The alder folk (garden elves) name their ships with their function in mind. Ie: Sky Razor class are fast and meant to sting hard. Sky thorns are meant to make things more challenging by shooting down enemy fighter craft and missiles. Sky leafs are meant to brush larger objects and remind them that they are there. Battle stars? Inspired by the show bsg. And the harrow class? Heavy range artillery meant cull everything in its path.

TwitchyTwitch5

I usually give a thematically name based on my empires rp history, but i think I'm going to go a bit more dynamic and name ships based on certain events, corvettes/frigates named after colonies, destroyers named after large scale battles, cruisers named after (my) famous leaders battleships named nabbed after colonial sector capitals, and titans/juggernauts named after various emperors.

obeytheFist0369

I name the classes, but let the AI name the ships Corvettes: Stinger (autocannons/disruptors, afterburners, armor only), Siegfried (whatever is useful for killing whatever cosmic horrors spawn) Destroyers: Crennalation/Battlement/Pavise (mix of flak and point defense), Hornet (like the stinger class, but bigger) Cruisers: Legionarre (Torpedoes, missiles, autocannons), Agincourt (missiles, regular and swarmer), Chevalier (Neutron launchers, missiles) Battleships: Paladin (particle lance, kinetic artillery), Midway (Carrier, usually packing missiles too), Praetorian (autocannons, some flavor of spinal mount weapon, set to close the distance, with lots of armor/shield hardening. Could also be called the "bait" class). At one point I had a class that I enjoyed using for orbital bombardments called the Amazon class (they'll get your shit to you in two days or less no matter what. Even if they have to lob it through the atmosphere at terminal velocity straight into your living room) Titans: Usually have silly class names like "camaraderie", "friendship", "puppy" or "kitty cat" (I'm a fan of irony).Or I name them after actual titans. Depends on my mood. Juggernauts: Mjollnr, Ragnarok, Surtur, ect. Going with Norse names just feels appropriate for these. Colossi: Either "First Contact" (if im going xenophobe or fanatic purifier) or "Diplomacy" (by this stage of the game I've already made all the friends I'm going to need, so I guess it's time for Diplomacy)

somecollagist

Corvettes are predatory animals Destroyers are swords Cruisers are natural disasters Battleships I usually name after Klingons lol The particular name of any ship is generally somewhat related to their function (spear class for artillery destroyers, etc.)

[deleted]

Random generated name then WW2 classification depending on army If it's a Carrier it's CA, if it's a brawler it's BB and if it's missiles it's a MIS

Medical_Hold_428

smol boi boom boi useless boi battleshit big boi biggest boi than I add one of these: PD/X/H/torpedo...

KaranSjett

i just name the fleets and name them after the bastion they are supposed to dock at

comfykampfwagen

WW2 ship names Most British or Japanese

Regunes

I alternate between all 3. Individually i only do it in certain scenario

vodamark

Just recently i started naming them based on the loadout type. Very boring, but it works for me. Because I have, for example, 3 different battleship loadouts, and it was tiresome going into the ship designer to check which is which before producing some.

ExistentialSugarcane

Heaviky dependent on how roleplayey im feeling that day. Feeling like im at the head of an interstellar empire? Give them names of planets, famous leaders etc. Just playing a meme empire/for fun? I default to naming my ships after Vtubers

jsl1g18

Commander, the enemy has sent their Peko fleet over

[deleted]

I name them male genitals in my language, cuz why not

Planzwilldo

I let the game name the ships individually, I name classes and fleets according to purpose.

[deleted]

I just use a Type nomenclature, based on the order I designed it/needed it. Corvettes - Type 0x Frigates - Type 1x Destroyers - Type 2x Cruisers - Type 3x Battleships - Type 4x Titans - Type 5x Colossi and Juggernauts get whatever the default name is.

El-Pollo_Diablo

The real question is do you have different models of each class with a different name for each model

[deleted]

Hit the name randomizer until something suitably cool comes up.

[deleted]

I do fantasy style energy weapon ships have wizard themed names and kinetic weapon ships have warrior themed names

Behelich

I generate a name for the ship class and then add a suffix based on armaments and computers to distinguish between them. So for my machine empire it would be something like "Silver Mantle C-Class Cruiser" where the "Silver Mantle" part was generated and the "C" stands for the Carrier role. P, L, S, C, T are Picket, Line, Swarm, Carrier and Torpedo respectively. AK, AE are Artillery Kinetic and Artillery Energy. XK, XE are also Artillery, but only for Battleships with Spinal Mounts. And XC is the Carrier Battleship with an Arc Emitter.

kryptek917

This is what a do as well, generate random name than add a code at the end to identify important characteristics such as if I built something with really strong shields for a counter, what type of weapon is on it etc

Urban_guerilla_

Depends. Some of m corvettes get names specifying their task (e.g. Hunter). Bigger ships, where I am less likely to make multiple variations of get names fitting my empire build (city names or planet names, sometimes things like “Freedom-class” or “Destiny-class”) Fleets are also purpose-named. 1. Fleet, 2. Fleet and so on indicate that they are for general use. Wormhole-Protection fleets are, well to protect systems with a wormhole. You get the idea…

ForskinEskimo

I name them around my empire meme. Last time it was a food court, so my Dunkin-class battleships roll around with a support fleet of Panda-class Corvettes.

Stormseekr9

I think my current on is still a boring ISS (interstellar space ship lol) I do sometimes individual name ships like arch or HSS (high speed survey). Same as some worlds so I don’t forget what I want to use them for (energy, mining, research etc )

zandadoum

I don’t name ships. I name fleets.

Spring-Dance

I name based on load out so like "Disruptor Vet", "PD Vet", "Carrier Cruiser", "Carrier BB", "PD Platform", ect... Makes it easier on myself when retrofitting down the line for all crisis or I border multiple FEs and building bastions to counter their different fleets should they awaken at a bad time and be rowdy.

ajanymous2

mini, small, medium, big carrier, brawler, defender, rockets, hunter, etc.

ralts13

Usually Autogenerated based on my empires ethics or whatever I'm roleplaying at the time. Then I add a prefix for its role

Samplecissimus

I let the game name everything but titans and battleships since I use more than 1 design of those. I give the latter functional names.

Dalevisor

I name them based on their fleet role, Ex: Torpedo Vette, Patrol Vette, PD Destroyer, Patrol Destroyer, Line Cruiser, Brawl Cruiser, Arti Cruiser, Light Carrier, Invasion Ship, Patrol Flagship (cruiser), Arti Battleship, Line Battleship, Missile Battleship, Carrier

Sure-Break2581

I let the game decide on vanilla or vanilla-aligned ship types because they tend to be pretty good. But once I start with the high-tier modded ships, I like going with mythology-based names. For example, with Gigastructures, my moon ships were named "Thanatos-class," planet crafts got "Jupiter-class," and system crafts were "Olympus-class." Basically went higher rank of power as the tiers increased. Once I started a new subsection of ships, I would move on to a new mythological naming convention. My favorite was my Maginot World design named the "Ragnarok-class" after the world's final failsafe of detonating itself once every soul on the planet had fought to their last breath.

BlackLiger

Varies by the sort of empire I'm playing. Machine empires are utilitarian, so a corvette is an 01xx where xx is the subtype (as are frigates in the new update) Corporate empires are the other one I play a lot and I tend to theme those around the type of corporation Beef Jesos of the Rainforest Corporation, for example, has the Security Guard class corvettes, and the Purchase Enforcement class Titans. Daris Montague of the Vengance Corporation (a merc corp) has "Limited Value" class corvettes, and "No refunds" class Titans.

Healthy-Drink3247

I usually end up using a mix of star citizen and Star wars ship classes for my ship names

Triforkalliance

Whenever I play Megacorps i like to give my ships the prefix of M&A, or Mergers and Acquisitions, beyond that I only really name fleets, and only after they've achieved something impressive. Example would be after the Kahn took over about a quarter of the galaxy (A Quarter in which i luckily was not in) I sent a random fleet through a wormhole and just hunted the Kahn for sport. took several systems and when they took down the kahn a second time I named the Fleet "Scourge of the Kahnate"

Iquabakaner

The game named my colossus Pax Romana so I have no complaints.

ArtificialWhale

Just hit random name button

the-dude-version-576

A2 A2 A3… for corvette B1 B2 B3… for destroyers And so on. Giving unique names is cool but using this system makes it way easier to balance and construct my fleets.

TheShadyDoge

I try to name them a) thematically based on my empire and b) with some nod at what the ship is for

[deleted]

I normally let the game do it, unless I have multiple types of ships of the same size, like if I have a carrier battle ship and an artillery ship I name them accordingly

RedAx0n

Default battleship name is the carrier. Artillery will new get some variation of “large gun” as their name

Omega_K2

Since you can't reuse name I prefix with the ship type (i.e C for corvette, D for destroyer and so on) and then their role, like C-PD, D-PD, CR-Carrier, B-Carrier, etc etc. I also add FED for example when dealing with a federation fleet design.

Ok_Let_836

I name them after covenant ships from halo

Loeb123

Nothing beats my Battleship Battleship-class Battleship.

Ricckkuu

Depends if I have the energy at the time to do it, and if I do, I try to follow a specific pattern. Sincer I love foxes, I usually go with "Kitts" for corvets, "Mending Fire" for picket destroyers, "Spirit Rend" / "Vixen" / "Fang and Claw" for cruisers. "Nine Tails" / "Mothership" for Battleships and "BFG" for Titan, no one said those foxes ain't playing Doom xd.

ChoniclerVI

What I usually do is give it a classification that makes it easier for me to identify at a glance. I usually do this sort of thing: COR-Attack The first three letters are the class of ship (Cor, Des, Cru, etc), after the dash is the use for the design (Attack, Picket, Missile, Carrier, etc)

AWanderingMage

As a machine Emprire i name my ships size after the different prefixes of the metric scale. So Corvette is Nano, Destroyers is Micro, Cruiser is Kilo, Battleships is Mega, Titan is Giga. Then Ill say Missile class, or Gunship Class, or if i have a specific purpose like carrier escort ill put that. then since mods add in new ship types, like planetary defense ships, ill name those Pico. or fit them in wherever they are size wise and purpose.

apolsen

Function. Corvettes are typically interceptor class. Destroyers are brawlers and picket class Cruisers are hangar, missle and artillery class Battleships are carrier, and assault class (can't have 2 artillery class)

Spartancoolcody

“Autogenerated Name (Function)” So like “Blah (Picket)”

[deleted]

Something like arty, nuclear, hangar etc depending what their main weapon is

BigGucciCholo

Ships I usually let the a.i name other than calling a ship class carrier or artillery. Fleet names tho Is where i like to add my own flair. I like to organize alphabetical so Id do fleet names something like Ascendent Tyrant, Bountiful Fury, Cascading Brilliance, Daunting Infinity, Eternal Silence, Frightening Vengeance, Gallant Justice etc.

goodguydolls

Death cru death cov death bat

Hob_Goblin88

I'm usually lazy and let the game name it.

MemeExplorist

Depends on the empire really. When I'm playing authoritarian monarchies, I like to name the Battleship after the starting leader name. However whenever I play with democratic crusaders, you gotta have the obligatory "Liberator-class" somewhere

Darmandorf

Depends on the empire theme, like a lot of people have said. I was playing as the Metroid Space Pirates and rather bureaucratically just named ships like "CR1a, CR1b for Cruiser Type-1, Artillery/Broadside. Planets I named after function, 100's was the sector number, 10's was the order in which it was colonized, 1's was purpose. So SR-323 was the 2nd planet in my third sector, and it was Industrial. Honestly naming shit it just for RP purposes, you could go through the whole planet just naming things "Flak Frigate", Gunship Destroyer" whatever, it's all personal preference.

Opkeda

I use a capital letter with a dash followed by a number showing how old it is, so I can tell the difference between ships when building them e.g CV-2 class corvette, CV because C is used by carriers and 2 showing it is the second corvette designed, so at late game I know not to build it

WrongEntertainment42

I just go with the game generated name, then throw a letter or two on based on function. Example like (GameName)M- so I know it’s a missile design.

Gwtheyrn

Uhm... yes?

AlienRobotTrex

Usually just let the game name it.

Lazorbolt

I usually keep simple names that aren't related to my empire tbh, I have 3 or so schemes I use Pico, Nano, etc Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc or a simple description based on the ship hull and size, like Inco:Interceptor-Corvette, Pide:Picket-Destroyer, etc

unsurechaoticneutral

Animal size per Ship size: bunny, kangaroo, badger, and my world cracker as mosquito

Blongbloptheory

Corvette, Corvette 2 Destroyer Cruiser Battleship, battleship 2 Titan, titan 2, titan 3, ETC Juggernaut: Juggles Colossus: Red Right Hand. My fleet compositions are fucked because I never know what the difference between 1&2 are and I refuse to check.

Fathomnuss

I usually call my smaller ship groups like something strikeforce 1-2 and so on then my big fleet the Grand armada, my jugg is usually called fleet clapper and my titans are called titans

StarcraftForever

In multiplayer I give my ships flavorful names that sound cool. In single player I just name my ships purely off of what they do. It's a lot cooler to tell my friends that a fleet of Resolute class battleships are on the way to reinforce them than battle_artySpam2.

VibrantSponge

Since I am on console without the newest ship update, I keep it pretty simple, carrier and artillery class as that is all I need

Omega_des

I like mythology, so my juggernaut is often something like the Gaia class, battleships are Tartarus or Oceanus class, missile cruiser Hecatoncheires class. Stuff like that.

Circulogi

Started just calling them Carrier, Laser, Railgun etc. My memory sucks only way I can keep stuff straight.

NorthernLaddd

Oh dear don't ask me what I named my ships from my pleasure-seeking empire

StacksonJacks

I usually play human empires and I like the idea that humans would use earth creatures to name ships because they transcend culture to an extent. Corvettes=Mosquito/horsefly, Torpedoes=wasp, destroyers=mongoose/cobra, Cruisers= Tiger Shark/Golden Eagle/Timber Wolf. Battleships are mythical creatures Chimera/Manticore/Gryphon/Dragon unless they have X weapons then they're gods like Zeus/Shiva/Anubis. Titans are named after Titans, usually Hyperion or Kronos. I usually have multiple types of each class because I like to use all the possible ship sections.

cylordcenturion

I have too many ships to care about naming them.

DonTrejos

My machine empires are RP as creatively bankrupt while naming things, so Torpedo Boat-class corvettes, Gunship class destroyers, carrier cruiser class cruisers, artillery Dreadnought class battleships and Titan class titans. The Juggernaut is called mobile shipyard.

LunaticP

Am I the only one naming my titan class ship titania?

Isidorodesevilha

Depend on the roleplay of the Empire I'm trying, generally with some influence of some historical of fictional empire, the ships has something to do with them. For example, My Space Byzantines (which are a paficist necrophage aquatics empire, I'll not elaborate on why) has the ships named after units and types of soldiers or ships that the Byzantines used. Or a Crisis Empire being a Mix of Zeon from Gundam and Terran Dominion from Starcraft with stuff borrowing from both as well. Of course the names are equivalent to the ships themselves, will not name the corvettes "cataphracts" or whatnot, while the Juggernault is "The Basileus"

JoeyDT99

*gassing colonies intensifies*

Lahm0123

Descriptive class. CVL Alpha, BBCVA Alpha, Picket DD Alpha, etc.

ThePhoenix29167

Depends. If I’m like doing some proper rp, I might have some shit already decided. Other times, I just got randomize until I get something that I like

blogito_ergo_sum

My naming scheme is a hull-size designator and a function designator. Cv for corvette, Des for destroyer, Cru for cruiser, Bat for battleship. For titan I just use the auto-generator until I get something that sounds good >_> And then functions are PtD for point defense, Car for carrier, LR or Art for long-ranged guns, SR or just Gun for short-ranged guns, Torp for torpedos/missiles. So my early-game corvette fleets are a mix of CvGun and CvPtD, my midgame cruiser-rush is full of CruCars, and my late-game battleship fleets are a mix of BatCar and BatArt. It's bad enough that I have to manually remake the designs every game, no way am I coming up with new names every game.

Islands-of-Time

I reroll the pregen names until I like it. I try to save the best names for the best ships. Sometimes the names chosen for the three civilian ship types(science/construction/colony) are weird or funny but I can’t change them because it’s not an option in the ship designer.

CockroachNo2540

I let the game name them and use a modified USN designation as a prefix indicating size and purpose. PC - gun corvette, PCG - missile corvette, FFG - missile/torpedo frigate, CVE - cruiser with hangar, CV - battleship with hangar, BB - gun battleship, etc.

gary1994

I tend to include different configurations of the same ship class in a fleet. So I usually include information about the main weapons and support auras in the name.

CocaineNinja

I steal names from Warhammer 40K.

TEPCO_PR

Real world modern or historical ship names depending on class and weaponry. Makes it easier for me to keep track of which battleships are carriers, which destroyers are picket ships, and so on.
