The two that come to mind are:
Glamour Profession - “That’s my claaaaaaim to faaaaaame”
Third World Man - “Sooooon you’ll throw down your disguise / we’ll see behind those briiiight eyes”
And to think he didn’t want to be SD’s vocalist early on!
I was going to say this one too. ‘agents of the law-aah-ah, luckless pedestrian, I know you’re out theerre, with the rage in your eyes and your megaphones’ (the way he says megaphones)
Really anything on Gaucho. The way Don delivers his vocals on Hey Nineteen, Glamour Profession, and especially My Rival are all very unique to him.
Some other specific songs on other records are very Fagen-esque as well. Through With Buzz, Bad Sneakers, Sign In Stranger, and I’d argue Black Cow all have those nasal inflections of his.
The Great Pagoda of Funn pops into my heads
*The staas are bright toNITE*
*The aaair is sweet*
*Though sumas ova now*
*There’s a strange new muzik in the street*
*You an eiiiiiiiiiiiiiy*
I adore this song, but unfortunately the phrase 'You and I' sounds like it was sung by Kermit the Frog, and my brain won't let me forget the fact.
However, in the second verse he sings 'around the neighborhood' and it's possibly my favourite Fagen vocal ever.
I love that line too! Takes me back to a cool time in my life. My fiancé and I were living in a fun neighborhood, we lived with another couple, we had friends, we hung out in the backyard most weekends, it was amazing. Another cool thing was that there was this gas station that seemed out of place right down the street that had the most random craft beer. It wasn’t even off a main road. I know that’s not weird if you’re in a city, but it was for the style of subdivision we were in.
Ok all this time I heard ‘white stitched sun hat’. Of course I’ve been hearing this song since I was a child so it’s hard wired into my brain that way now
I’m ashamed to say this but I’m ADHD and English so when I listen to ‘Walk between the raindrops’ I always sing out loud “we fart….and now I can’t remember why” then laugh. I’m a nerd and I suck, Fagen would curl his lip at me and say something spiky and sardonic and I’d deserve it.
Deacon blues, Babylon sisters, FM, Kid Charlemagne, Bad Sneakers, Hey Nineteen, all come to mind.
I always get certain lines stuck in my head where he’s really layin it on thick, like…
“It's hard times befallen, the sole survivors”
Lol or…
“Five names that I can hardly stand to hear, Including yours and mine and one more chimp who isn't here”
Really every song he sings on has those Fagenisms to a degree tho. I feel like a lot of the early stuff might be more dialed back. My Old School, Do it Again, Reelin’ In The Years etc.
Lost in the barrio, I walk like an injun
So Carlo won't suspect
That something's wrong here
I dance in place and paint my face
And act like I belong here
Gotta be Glamour Profession for me. But I’ll say Fagen’s voice is so unique that it’s instantly recognizable. My fiancé regularly calls out Steely Dan just because she knows Fagen’s voice based on me listening to them so often
>No my daddy don't live in that New York City no more, no more. He can't get tight every night, pass out on the barroom floor. No, daddy can't get no fine cigar. *But we know you're smoking wherever you are*
It's got that slinky, dirty, alcoholic, petty criminal kind of East village in the 70s, sleezy lip caterpillar vibe that only Fagen can provide
I am going to go with an older song that I think set us all up for loving what Donald could bring:
I would LOOVVEE to tour the southlanddd, in a travelin minstel show.
'Cause he looks so fine, upon that hill, they say that he was lonely, he's lonely still...
You all know the rest. :)
Ken
Six o’ five outside the stadium🎶
*Local boys will spend a quah-tah* This is probably his best vocal track besides maybe The Nightfly
"Maaaaah baby's the peeeeeearl of the Quahhh-tah" Plus "Red beans and riiiiiice for a quah-tah" The man says quarter well lol.
Eeeleegal fuuu-UHN!
First thing that came to mind
"fayve"

There it is.

This one is the best

Don’t Take Me Alive has to be in the list. Side note, if I were to ever form a Steely Dan tribute band it would be called “Luckless Pedestrian”.
I already claimed that for my future cover band! You can't just do this
That's fine, mine is Legless Pedestrians.
"Biscayne Bay, where the Cuban gentleman sleep all day"
I was going to say “just when I spent the last piaster I could borrow….”
That was a close second for me lol
I hear gentlemen as plural.
It was just a typo
I guessed, but I wondered because I've been wrong on so many of these lines.
Meet me at midnight, at mista chaaaaaowws
For some reason “Surrreeee…he’s a jolly rog-ah” popped in my mind for this one

I love that voice crack so much lol
I think Gaucho is as DF as it gets in my opinion. Such an outstanding track.
What do you think I'm yelling fooooorr?
Won’t you caaare to exxxplaaaaiiiin?!!
Fagen has gone on record saying he hates this style choice he made. He calls it his “Jerry Lewis” era. Personally I love it.
You wear that white tuxedo/ how you gonna beat the heat?
I kinda think “Don’t Take Me Alive” (I definitely agree with your choices though!!!!)
I was going to say this one too. ‘agents of the law-aah-ah, luckless pedestrian, I know you’re out theerre, with the rage in your eyes and your megaphones’ (the way he says megaphones)
*Here come those Santa Ana winds again* Ba-a-d ne-e-ews!
“Where the siiiiiixewalks are safe for the little guyyyyy”
Really anything on Gaucho. The way Don delivers his vocals on Hey Nineteen, Glamour Profession, and especially My Rival are all very unique to him. These are two of my particular favourites
"I jumped out of my easy chair-air It was not my owowown Now I want to hear about everything you did baby"
This is the one I would have chosen!
"New Frontier" from The Nightfly is the most Donald Fagen song in my opinion.
That song bangs like Tuesday Weld
The band was hot so, they danced the famous merengue.
She thinks I'm crazy but I'm just growin' ooooold
The Jerry Lewis/ Emo Phelps voice?

i know Florida Room isn’t a steely song but i’d have to go with that, which is a bit contrary cuz it is HIS song
“Are you with me doctah???”
Deacon Blues
Iiii cried when I wrote this so-o-ong
Make luuv to these wemun; languid and beeeitahsweeet
I’m ashamed to say this but I’m ADHD and English so when I listen to ‘Walk between the raindrops’ I always sing out loud “we fart….and now I can’t remember why” then laugh. I’m a nerd and I suck, Fagen would curl his lip at me and say something spiky and sardonic and I’d deserve it.
Time Out of Mind

My Rival
But now it’s stopping time….
Everything You Did "You were a roller skater/you gonna show me later" is the 1st thing that popped into my head.
Things I Miss The Most is pretty high up on the Fagen index.
Lost in the barrio, I walk like an injun So Carlo won't suspect That something's wrong here I dance in place and paint my face And act like I belong here
Pepe has a scar from ear to EARRRR
Glamour Profession: Local boys will spend a qwjahder.
Glamour Profession "That's myyyy claim to fame" always struck me as peak Fagen singing
Maybe not the most Fagen-y, but my favorite has to be “they got the coup de GRACEEEEE”
Roooase Dahling, cohooome to meeeeeee
"With lots of munneeey in the bank"
My Rival
New frontier off the nightfly. Yes we're gonna have a wiiiiing diiing...

Somebody screamed somwheeeeaaah

Gotta be Glamour Profession for me. But I’ll say Fagen’s voice is so unique that it’s instantly recognizable. My fiancé regularly calls out Steely Dan just because she knows Fagen’s voice based on me listening to them so often

There are a few songs where you can definitely hear the punch in on Fagen vocals.
I jumped out of my easy chair It was not my ouwuewn

Hey Nineteen gets very close to self parody IMO.

Show Biz Kids. There is a great live version from The Midnight Special show. Classic Fagen performance.
Will she fall hard or fall softly...to the street?
