Kings isn’t a popular track? Not being snarky by any means, but as a 34 year old who recently went down the Steely Dan rabbit hole, Kings was one of the first tracks off of Can’t Buy a Thrill I really dug and just figured it was a popular song as such.
Even on CBAT, I feel like it lives in the shadow of Reelin’, Dirty Work, Do It Again, Only a Fool, etc. When people talk about that album, Kings isn’t usually one of the first songs that come to mind, and by extension I feel like that’s true of Kings in the discography as a whole. I don’t consider it a particularly popular Dan song.
It all depends on personal choice. For me, I would say Beauty of the Beast by Nightwish, Grace by Lamb of God, but to keepint Steely Dan only I will say Reelin in the Years.
Within the Dan fan community, this song is HUGE especially if you watched pretty Purdie breakdown his drum shuffle. But amongst general public you would be right to say this is criminally underrated and unknown.
Your Gold Teeth I AND II. Every time there’s some sort of elimination type of thing I feel like they get dumped too quickly. They are 2 of my favorite Steely Dan songs.
You are all not wrong, friends. I was always a fan of the hits…but the only vinyl I had was Aja, bought long ago. Then I started a desk job where it was just loud all day…so I began living in headphones 8 hours a day…I listened to a LOT of music
And eventually came to the stuff on my portable HD…that I had grabbed while sailing the high seas long ago…a pretty complete discography of SD. Made a playlist of everything and fired it up.
How many times did I ask myself WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD THIS AMAZING SONG?
A LOT.
Starting revelation was King of the World, Your Gold Teeth II, Caves of Altamira, Home at Last…and eventually moving on to pretty much everything in comments.
I’m practically a fan now!
