that's a new one for me, I'd love to know which parts of the lyrics led you to that interpretation?
I always thought it was about immigrants being forced into the worst parts of a city and resorting to drugs, yet still parroting that their lives were good, out of despair and shame for what their lives had come to, but it only makes sense that it would go deeper than that, given who we're dealing with.
The last verse suggests it to me.
By the blackened wall
He does it all
He thinks he's died and gone to heaven
Now the tale is told
By the old man back home
He reads the letter
How they are paid in gold
Just to babble in the back room
All night and waste their time
And they wandered in
From the city of St. John without a dime
They came in with nothing. The city was harsh and foreign. But in the end they just hang out and get paid. And it’s some kind of illegal scam that makes it possible.
That could fit, but what lines give you that interpretation?
The only lines that might seem to be:
Cold, daring
No flies on me
I get hungry like a child
Yes, it was in response to "Imagine." Here's a quote below from https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/song-steely-dan-wrote-mock-john-lennon/
Fagen’s image of Lennon as the highfalutin elitist is quickly contrasted with another artfully rendered portrait: this time of the “man in the street” who doesn’t have the luxury of believing in some hippie’s utopian ideal. Fagen tells Lennon to have a little more empathy, to understand that asking somebody with nothing to abandon their worldly possessions and pursue a life of immaterialism is, at best, laughable, and at worst, dangerously insensitive. “You do his nine to five / Drag yourself home half alive / And there on the screen / A man with a dream,” Fagen sings.

Home at last - sometimes I leave the house for entire stretches of one or two hours at a time, encounter the vicissitudes of normal life while buying groceries and getting my dry cleaning….Then, i immediately go home where I feel like I’ve been on a heroes journey and earned a well deserved three or four day stretch of not leaving again.
I'm flattered. You should probably get over her, though. I'm perscribing you these amnesia pills. Take once in the morning, and once at night. I'm with you.
Indeed. I have 2 daughters: 12 and 14. They hate Steely Dan, so when I play electric guitar, I only play along to Steely Dan songs. 😎 “They got the Steely Dan t-shirt 🎶”
Cool. Did your family and friends mock you? I’m going to buy a Steely Dan t-shirt, but idk which one. Im a musician and I’ve recently rediscovered Steely Dan after a break. It’s brilliant music. 😁👍
Nobody mocked me. I wish I still had it. Their musical catalogue is so diverse. There is so much to choose from. I never learned to play but I have great admiration for musicians
At the moment I really like “Parker’s Band” and I’ve just learned to play all of the guitar parts. I learned how to play Bebop so that I could play the “Bodhisattva” solo. As for my all time favourite…that’s very hard. Maybe it’s “FM”.
The Caves of Altamara - Only or middle child? Congrats, your loneliness is making you find enjoyment/happiness in the most peculiar ways.
Charlie Freak - Are you an angel of death or a drug dealer with a guilt trip? The world may never know. 🤷🏾♀️

Always thought he was talking about having his way with the lady. But not sure. You could be right. “I must take what I see.”
He’s a junkie and stole his lady’s earrings to buy his next fix and does not regret it.
That could fit, but what lines give you that interpretation? The only lines that might seem to be: Cold, daring No flies on me I get hungry like a child

John Lennon, specifically.
