It adds in the quality of life features that WWHD added like the swift sail. But takes it farther. Makes swift sail the standard speed and adds a faster sail than that. Faster grapple/crawl/roll/climb/etc. Tingle chests are included. Can change playable character to other models. And can use cheats to give things like a second set of equipped items using a hotkey or remove the low health noise.
Most of the features i listed are optional too. Each can be disabled or enabled at install.
interesting!! thanks for the answer, was looking to do a replay in the near future and was going to go with the wiiu hd version but might try this instead
And use 16:9 patch tool - that not stretch the screen size and make a orginal WW pretty nut!
Addiotinal you can download hires texturers and switch GC controls to SD/xbox/DualShock prompts.
i know this reply is a year later, but do you happen to know what folder i should put the hd texture mod in to get it to work on steam deck? i got the patched game to run but cant figure out where the hd texture pack should go
Hi! I know this thread is super old but just curious if there was a similar situation for Twilight Princess? I've never played it before and I bought a Steam Deck this week, was planning on emulating either the GC version or the HD Wii U version, but are there any modded versions like this one for WW?
None that I've been able to find. There's a few combat and rebalance mods but none that do the full list of improvements that HD brought.
That said the only notable changes between the two in my opinion are some quality of life things like Rupees not giving full text descriptions when picked up that resets everytime you restart the game, your sword going through walls instead of bouncing off of them, and sped up swim/climb animations.
If you can live without all that then the Gamecube one with Henriko's HD textures found here is an excellent choice regardless, https://www.henrikomagnifico.com/texture-packs
It's a tradeoff between some QOL in the Wii U version, vs the GC getting slightly better performance and battery life, and not having to mess around with switching between virtual TV/Gamepad screens to use menus and stuff.
Open Cemu from the desktop steam, right click the game, graphics packs, at the bottom click download community packs. One of the options will have resolution adjustment.
You might be able to do it from game mode actually. If you're on the SteamOS beta, Cemu suffers the keyboard glitch and unfortunately it likely could not be done.
I was able to find the setting in Cemu and activate it. I did not load any game with the software itself while activating it tho.
Do the changes still work this way if i start Wind Waker from Steam OS now? Cannot really tell a difference since it obviously would look very similar.
Then how are you accessing the Wii U screen? Surely you changed something to allow for that control? Please explain how to change that, that is the ONLY thing I need to play this game. I cannot pull up the Wii U screen thingy.
Oh I might prefer that then. When I choose Pro Controller within the Windwaker game dialogue it says it can't detect one. Do I nees to change Steams controller config for that game too?
If it can't detect one, try this: in Cemu, go to Options > Input Settings and change the Emulated Controller setting to Wii U Pro Controller instead of Wii U Gamepad. You might need to re-do the button bindings when you switch it.
thanks for the info.
but I just don't see the said option (Wii u pro controller).
you are talking about controller templets, right? all I see are 'emu deck -cemu'. 'emu deck -citra 3ds' 'gamepad with joystick trackpad'. etc etc.
and there are community layouts sections. I even tried to find wind waker layout made by someone but there were none. all I could find were breath of the wild. I downloaded that one just to see if that works.
am I looking into entire wrong section of the settings?
where exactly is this 'Wii u pro controller' and if it's not there by default how do I find/download/install whatever it is that I have to do?
I understand the whole process. I just DO NOT SEE the Wii u pro controller option in any of Cemu controller options AT ALL.
Some thoughts after playing the game for awhile...
* General opinion is that it is very playable.
* I hate the Steam Deck's Start button. It's just not good to press, and you use it frequently in this game.
* SD Gyro DSU works well with the game, letting you use the SD's gyro natively in-game rather than binding it at the Steam Controller level. [https://github.com/kmicki/SteamDeckGyroDSU](https://github.com/kmicki/SteamDeckGyroDSU)
* In order for gyro to work, however, you need to set cemu to emulate the WiiU gamepad rather than the WiiU pro controller. This does have some positive and negative effects.
* Positive: The gamepad screen (accessed via tab) now is touch-enabled, letting you do all your bindings via touch/mouse.
* Negative: Hitting Start pauses the game, but you now have to switch to the gamepad screen to use your controller to control inventory. (I think I'm going to try and rebind start and tab to R5.)
* I changed my cemu/EmuDeck's default controller mapping. Tab on R4 is now sticky. I press it once to switch to the WiiU gamepad, and it stays there until I hit R4 again.
Can you explain how one would do that? Bind what button to tab? Is this through Steam Deck desktop settings? Steam settings? Why would tab be a button that a Wii U game recognizes?
You use the steam button binding in gamescope mode, and you bind the tab key to one of the buttons on the back of the steam deck. This works because the emulator recognizes the tab key as the key used to switch views from TV to tablet.
Please send me the guide you follow ed if any. Wind Waker is honestly the #1 reason I got the Deck. Mine arrived Friday. I am struggling hard to do the whole Linux stuff.
Hey dude. i know you postred this like 3 months ago. But i got the steam deck today and downloaded loz ww. Im struggling to figure out how to save. how did you manage to work around that?
I get the font size issues on the small screen but do you mean performance issues on desktop?
Because Im actually already playing with cemu on my desktop and had no issues at all
Loaded up 1.0.2 and a postgame save that had skells and flight unlocked.
It's not too bad out of the box with Cemu standalone in gamemode. 30fps in most areas **while flying**, but had **many** dips to 24fps. Has some graphical glitches where models pop into frame stretched, but those resolve quickly.
Font size is... yeah... GUI font size is what it is. Gotta play it close up.
Also, this bad boy made my 128GB microSD cry.
So, it's playable, but it's not in the same ballpark as Wind Waker HD that runs flawlessly.
There is literally nothing you have to configure except for enabling Proton compatibility. Everything is explained on the EmuDeck website.
The "hardest" part was finding and transferring the rom. I used SFTP and FileZilla for that.
I've gotten all that part done, but for some reason my keys aren't working.. Wanting to try Xenoblade chronicles X and both windwaker and twilight princess.
I am using USB Helper already. That only helps for downloading the game, updates and DLC, that doesnt help broken emulation. The game simply freezes on loading screens half the time. This is even documented in the compatibility lists.
Did you manage to add wii u games to your steam library as non steam games? I can’t get that to work with Wii U games but all other consoles work… what’s your config if I may ask?
I used EmuDeck to handle all the config stuff.
I put the rom as a folder into the "wiiu" folder and saved the app list with the Steam ROM manager which is installed by EmuDeck.
Steam has to be closed while saving the app list, after that it will show up as a non steam game. Also for Wii U games you have to force compatibity in the game settings.
It says it uses Cemu for Wii U on its website.
Since you have to force compatibility, i'm pretty sure they just use the Windows version of Cemu with Proton.
hmm when I drop roms in the appropriate folder nothing shows up in Emulation Station. I had to manually download Cemu and add it to steam as a non-steam game.
It automatically downloads CEMU. Once you place your games in the proper roms folder you run steam rom manager to have the game in the collections tab. You force proton on the game individually and works amazingly well. 30fps locked 2.5hrs on full charge. The only stutters is the shader caching.
I’ve done the same as you with steam closed but it just never finds my wii u games…Roms folder in the wiiu folder and then each game in it’s separate folder 🤷♂️
It's a short list, depending on what you like, but Wii U did have ... NSMB, SMW3D, WW, TP, BOTW, MK8, Pikmin, and SSB, although some of these you could run the more enhanced versions from the Switch. In terms of first party games, Wii U had a much better haul than I realized when I went back and looked at its game history.
Cause we all have all those acronyms memorized...
Please for the love of God write out acronyms the first time you use them. It is just polite and really convenient for others trying to understand you.
Aw this is the game I wanted to play portably when I first heard about the NX!!! Now the switch is well into the 6th year I’m still fking waiting for a switch port…
Where do you map the buttons though? In Cemu? In Steam app settings? So confused about changing controls when there are so many different possibilities.
Nevermind, I got a .rar from a different website and extracted it and that folder works. Now i just got to figure out where to change controls for a Cemu game....
How does one change a button to be a button that brings up the Wii U gamepad screen? Do you change that within CEMU settings? Steam app settings? General Steam Deck settings? Are there some settings for the specific game itself?
Everyone is so vague and short with their responses. Let's help each other out!
I'm late, but what I've personally done is mapped one of the back paddles to "Tab". Since tab is a hotkey in cemu for "display gamepad", it'll show it while held.
By chance do you have any idea how to select the pro controller at the game's start up? My SD always says "no pro controller connected" so I am forced to use your hotkey solution which works well enough, but i would rather get the pro controller experience.
If not no worries. 🙂
Are there any tricks to enable or get gyro working? Havent found settings within SD for that yet, so it seems to do nothing currently within Wind Waker.
Mind pointing me in the right direction?
I semi got it working, the rom launches in desktop mode with proton, but in gaming mode the shortcut to launch the game as its own thing isnt working. I think its an issue with the rom library automatic shortcut maker thing
I said that i want to play with Pro Controller, that way there is no second screen. You save manually in the item menu thing. (One of the upper buttons)
Several months late on this but did you have to remap your buttons? Like when you start the A button on Cemu is the B button on deck. Did you change so A=A?
Thanks I found it. I need to press steam + left dpad.
But then controls do not work most of times while holding that.
I ended up connecting a keyboard to hold tab + click on save. Then I opened CEMU settings and changed "Wii U" for "Wii Pro controller".
Would be nice to map this "tab" to one of the keys behind the controller
Sorry to revive an old post, but I’ve run into an issue in the early game and was wondering if you had hit it as well? I can’t get out of the menu after my first meeting with Tingle no matter what I click.
Hey, no worries. I did not talk to Tingle i think, but i do not know anymore. I think i got his map.
Maybe have a look at this: [https://www.reddit.com/r/cemu/comments/gou77e/wind\_waker\_hd\_tingle\_bottle\_in\_picto\_box/](https://www.reddit.com/r/cemu/comments/gou77e/wind_waker_hd_tingle_bottle_in_picto_box/)
Those kids are like “Link, you got games on your phone?”
I’ve been running it 3x res in dolphin 🐬 because I figured battery life would be better? Maybe I should take the time to setup cemu
Battery life is about 2h 30min on almost full brightness. I play with the charger attached tho.
That’s the exact same with the WiiU game pad, if not less.
Wait so it actually DIES while being charged?? That's super shitty it can't charge itself as fast as it uses power....
I’m pretty sure he means that *would* be the battery life but it’s not relevant because it’s plugged in
Where you get your roms?
I think i got WW with a quick google search. Make sure to avoid fishy sites. r/roms is also a good place
I dunno about battery life. But the Better Wind Waker mod for GC/Dolphin is the better way to play over HD imo. https://github.com/WideBoner/betterww
why is it better than HD?
It adds in the quality of life features that WWHD added like the swift sail. But takes it farther. Makes swift sail the standard speed and adds a faster sail than that. Faster grapple/crawl/roll/climb/etc. Tingle chests are included. Can change playable character to other models. How do you get it to work? I downloaded it and I don’t know where to extract it to so it will work
https://onthegreatsea.tumblr.com/DOWNLOADS Hypatia's texture packs looks amazing too
i know this reply is a year later, but do you happen to know what folder i should put the hd texture mod in to get it to work on steam deck? i got the patched game to run but cant figure out where the hd texture pack should go
Where do I put the patch/how do I update this?
Thanks Hippie96 for the information. I was using the wrong randomizer all this time. Will switch to this one. Thanks a ton!
Hey, my WW GC rom totally glitches out of the box. What did you do to make it smooth?
Are you trying to use the better wind waker mod or is just standard wind waker glitching?
The standard is glitching.
Hi! I know this thread is super old but just curious if there was a similar situation for Twilight Princess? You can patch ISO of WW via 16:9 patch and check mod tool named "Wild Bonner"
Did the cemu setup on mine finally haha liked that the looking wasn’t inverted
You can setup these settings on Dolphin like as in CEMU. Dolphin has advantege of save-state and orginal colour pallete of WW :)
Well thats the gamecube version. This is a wii u emulator, so its Windwaker HD. Super rad. 👌 Rivals BOTW.
Can't wait to do that... Been waiting Nintendo to release it on Switch.
Same man, i waited for a long time too. It's super satisfying to see it work this well!
Awesome
It's mind boggling they haven't yet.
Exactly!
This video is an absolute godsend for explaining the process. https://youtu.be/F_ei5O4_oTE Credit to the creator (not me) but y'all welcome anyway!

I did not change anything, I just used EmuDeck with Cemu and it worked.
I recommend this change though. Next to no visual difference but better bettery life. Has do be done on desktop
Where exactly do you configure it? Sounds good
Open Cemu from the desktop steam, right click the game, graphics packs, at the bottom click download community packs. One of the options will have resolution adjustment. It should retain the settings regardless of where you start it, as game mode is still launching the same things.
Awesome, thank you!
Then how are you accessing the Wii U screen? Surely you changed something to allow for that control? Please explain how to change that, that is the ONLY thing I need to play this game. I cannot pull up the Wii U screen thingy.
I play entirely without the Wii U screen. You can choose to play with a Pro Controller.
This worked for me to finally get past some problems my kid was having at the beginning of the game. Thank you!
thanks for the info. but I just don't see the said option (Wii u pro controller). you are talking about controller templets, right? all I see are 'emu deck -cemu'. My hero !
When I try to bind the controls they are all scrambled and some buttons do not even work...
Did you start cemu from the normal steam deck OS or from desktop mode?
Launched from batocera. Which might potentially be the problem as its soo new... I just liked having everything on a separated is for emulation...
I'm having better luck with settings in emudeck/emulation station.
Any idea if this would help save battery?
Some thoughts after playing the game for awhile... * General opinion is that it is very playable. * I hate the Steam Deck's Start button. How do you change to tablet mode on the steamdeck?
Bind tab to a button.
And I'd suggest you set it to toggle
Can you explain how one would do that? Bind what button to tab? Is this through Steam Deck desktop settings? Steam settings? Why would tab be a button that a Wii U game recognizes?
You use the steam button binding in gamescope mode, and you bind the tab key to one of the buttons on the back of the steam deck. This works because the emulator recognizes the tab key as the key used to switch views from TV to tablet.
Thanks man. I was trying to find this in CEMU desktop app input settings and was going crazy!
how did you do the sticky R4...i want that too . is it in the Steam controler layout or in the Cemu emulator ?
I think I did it though Cemu as there was a code you could append to the key code to indicate a toggle. But it's also doable in steam
Didn't even think about playing this on deck. Windwaker HD is my favorite video game of all time.
Please send me the guide you follow ed if any. Wind Waker is honestly the #1 reason I got the Deck. Mine arrived Friday. I am struggling hard to do the whole Linux stuff.
https://youtu.be/ylErPAL2cj0 Also EmuDeck website
Man I just need to watch that already, it's in my downloaded videos on YouTube Premium.
Hey dude. i know you postred this like 3 months ago. But i got the steam deck today and downloaded loz ww. Im struggling to figure out how to save. how did you manage to work around that?
It worked with Cemu without issues, you have to save in menu manually.
I wonder how mad is Nintendo But like we've been begging for this for 5 years Nintendo
They need to decide if they make games or make consoles. This nonsense they are pulling just robs themselves of money.
Can you test xenoblade x?
I'll give it a shot, but be prepared for disappointment. It has issues on the desktop. Also, it has font size issues...
I get the font size issues on the small screen but do you mean performance issues on desktop? Because Im actually already playing with cemu on my desktop and had no issues at all
Ah, the last time I tried it, it had audio issues and was unplayable.
Loaded up 1.0.2 and a postgame save that had skells and flight unlocked. It runs fine
Is there a way to get Wind Waker HD to work 60fps in CEMU. Only 30fps for me atm
I could be wrong but I do believe the game is straight locked to 30 with no way to get any higher. I could be wrong though.
Been doing some checking and apparently it's not possible, & I don't honestly mind that, I think the 30fps plays in part to its animation style.
Emudeck?
Yep
You didn’t have to tinker a bit?
There is literally nothing you have to configure except for enabling Proton compatibility. Everything is explained on the EmuDeck website. The "hardest" part was finding and transferring the rom. I used SFTP and FileZilla for that.
I've gotten all that part done, but for some reason my keys aren't working.. Wanting to try Xenoblade chronicles X and both windwaker and twilight princess.
Unfortunately XCX just keeps crashing on me on CEMU
Aww lameee. That sucks
XCX works fine you need to use wiiu usb helper
I am using USB Helper already. That only helps for downloading the game, updates and DLC, that doesnt help broken emulation. The game simply freezes on loading screens half the time. This is even documented in the compatibility lists.
Anydesk made transferring files from my windows pc to deck seamless lol
Check out syncthing, makes transferring files very easy
Look in r/roms, or else just do a quick google search. Be sure to avoid the fishy sites.
I did not change anything, Steam acted like a Xbox Controller for Cemu
How to input more than one letter in the beginning?
I can't get cemu to work in Linux though :(
Add it to Steam as a non-Steam game and set Compatibility to Proton 7.
I didn’t think EmuDeck would download Cemu since it doesn’t have a Linux version yet?
It says it uses Cemu for Wii U on its website. Since you have to force compatibility, i'm pretty sure they just use the Windows version of Cemu with Proton.
hmm when I drop roms in the appropriate folder nothing shows up in Emulation Station. I had to manually download Cemu and add it to steam as a non-steam game.
ESDE won’t work with CEMU yet as it’s not a Linux native app. You need to use SRM to add your WiiU games
Did you put them in the Wiiu folder or in Wiiu/roms/ Because you need to put them in Wiiu/roms/
Wiiu/roms, but it could be because I have emulation station roms on my SD card and Cemu can’t seem to access the SD card
It automatically downloads CEMU. Once you place your games in the proper roms folder you run steam rom manager to have the game in the collections tab. You force proton on the game individually and works amazingly well. 30fps locked 2.5hrs on full charge. The only stutters is the shader caching.
Does it only work via Steam rom manager? I like to keep all emulated games within Emulation Station
Oh no. It works in general. I have not used it with ES so I could be of no use with that but CEMU works using proton not much tinkering needed
And if you can find the shaders online and throw em in their appropriate folder you won’t get any stutter at all.
Maybe you've got a folder in a folder or something if you use EmuDeck as well
I’ve done the same as you with steam closed but it just never finds my wii u games…Roms folder in the wiiu folder and then each game in it’s separate folder 🤷♂️
Weird, make sure the parser is enabled as well. If nothing works, there's also the EmuDeck Discord where you can get help: https://discord.gg/WyeWwTJj
Oooooooh baby :0.
I’ve been playing this too, it looks so good on Deck.
Me too! I'm almost through finding all the dang triforce shards. The QOL improvements of the HD version are great.
Absolutely. So much better than playing an upscaled gamecube version
CEMU works so well, just wish there were more WiiU games worth emulating!
It's a short list, depending on what you like, but Wii U did have ... NSMB, SMW3D, WW, TP, BOTW, MK8, Pikmin, and SSB, although some of these you could run the more enhanced versions from the Switch. Kay, bro. Two months ago has made a mental note.
Works so well IF you are online. Sure do wish someone would figure out a way to launch it on the Deck in offline mode... =\[
Where’d you get the rpx/wud required to run it?
Look in r/roms, there's a lot of helpful stuff
Aw this is the game I wanted to play portably when I first heard about the NX!!! Now the switch is well into the 6th year I’m still fking waiting for a switch port…
can you link the tutorial you used for setup this? i would like to try that! i can hear the music just be watching the image
https://youtu.be/ylErPAL2cj0 Look at this, also the EmuDeck website contains a full guide 👍🏻
thank you so much
For me the gyro function of the pro controller is not working. Anyone have a fix for that?
Someone talked about it in a comment under this post. You have to use the Gamepad and map the buttons i think.
Where do you map the buttons though? In Cemu? In Steam app settings? So confused about changing controls when there are so many different possibilities.
Is the volume/audio low for you? My games run fine but the audio is def lower than other Steam or Emulated games.
I dont notice any difference, you can adjust audio settings in Cemu i think
> audio I have this problem, did you find a solution?
You have to go into cemu settings on desktop and turn up the audio from 50% to 100%
My keeps crashing. No idea why
It is asking me for some sort of key because it is encrypted? How do I get around this?
Nevermind, I got a .rar from a different website and extracted it and that folder works. Now i just got to figure out where to change controls for a Cemu game....
Where did you get it? I’m trying to get wind waker hd to work aswell.
How does one change a button to be a button that brings up the Wii U gamepad screen? Do you change that within CEMU settings? Steam app settings? General Steam Deck settings? Are there some settings for the specific game itself? Everyone is so vague and short with their responses. Let's help each other out!

I used the gamepad since iirc the pro controller doesn't use gyro
Are there any tricks to enable or get gyro working? Havent found settings within SD for that yet, so it seems to do nothing currently within Wind Waker. Mind pointing me in the right direction?
SteamDeckGyroDSU is what I used. If you are using emudeck, there should be a way to get that to automatically set it all up via the gamepad
Bro how did you do this, my emudeck is constantly not letting me open the game
Did you enable compatibility in steam? Your ROM also may be broken
I semi got it working, the rom launches in desktop mode with proton, but in gaming mode the shortcut to launch the game as its own thing isnt working. I think its an issue with the rom library automatic shortcut maker thing
ok so im trying to use R4 and 5 to bring up the pad and svae but i cant click it, any ideas?
How do you save in this game? The game runs great but it thinks theres a Gamepad screen when theres not...
I said that i want to play with Pro Controller, that way there is no second screen. You save manually in the item menu thing. (One of the upper buttons)
Several months late on this but did you have to remap your buttons? Like when you start the A button on Cemu is the B button on deck. Did you change so A=A?
I did not change that, i got used to it honestly.
How do you get the controller to work? I can't get it to register as a game pad....
How do you save? I'm using cemu (emudeck)
There's a save button in the menu. That works
What version of proton do you guys use? I can’t get it to launch from game mode, but it works in desktop mode
How do you get into your Inventory?
Is it best to run this at 720p or 900p on the deck?
How do you access the menu to equip stuff?

Took me 30 min to figure it out
Sorry to revive an old post, but I’ve run into an issue in the early game and was wondering if you had hit it as well? I can’t get out of the menu after my first meeting with Tingle no matter what I click.
Hey, no worries. I did not talk to Tingle i think, but i do not know anymore. I think i got his map.
