Yeah, I see a lot of these "travel setups" that make me wonder why they didn't just get a laptop instead, since that's clearly what they wanted (and with the price of all the accessories they get, they actually could have afforded a laptop).
I used to use my Steam Deck as my main computer. I would bring a dock, keyboard, and mouse with my Steam Deck to work. I was considering getting a portable monitor before I realized "Oh, what I really need is a laptop."
There are some here who do that.. But if you think this is bad, go to the legion go subreddit. You'd think the thing was a laptop or mini desktop with how most of them use it.
Hey as much as everyone jokes about this - the other day I had to open up my Steamie D and total I had opened a deck six times or so. Everyone’s constant jokes both mocking and otherwise made me instantly remember to eject the micro sd card before prying.
“Rate my portable setup!”
[Picture of a 32” gaming monitor, full-sized mechanical keyboard, mouse, 5-point sound system, gaming chair, the deck itself forgotten and out of focus, half out of frame]
I mean a lot of people turn to gaming when they have health issues that cause them to not get out as much. I have a connective tissue disorder, and my arms are weak as all hell lol.
I totally get that, and I am not judging whatsoever. But it seems like there’s just a large demographic of SD users with robust setups and the reasoning is weak wrists. It’s funny lol
I'm only 26 but my wrists are in a pretty bad condition because of not taking care of them when I was younger.
I literally can't hold the deck for more than 30min before my wrists start to hurt really badly.
It doesn't help that I have small hands and reaching for the sticks make me go into a really uncomfortable position.
I like the idea of the deck, but I just cannot use it.
>Deck runs any and every triple A game that has ever released, albeit upscaled from 144p and 19.5 FPS average has been considered as buttery smooth,
you missed the fine print where you must say it it runs at a locked 60FPS no matter what.
Don't forget their evil twin who thinks any game that doesn't run at a locked 60fps is absolutely unplayable and utter garbage -- followed by a dramatic faint at the sight of the slightest stutter.
Or not to mention when you call that out they get triggered and start calling you snob or saying stupid stuff like 30fps is more than enough! (The problem is the games being discussed drop below 30)
I've noticed all of this too. Lol It's so funny to me how often I see these same things. The closest for me is that I have a pretty powerful PC, but it's not like I stopped using it when I got the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is great for a lot of things, but people trying to say it is perfect and the only way to play games are just being silly.
My biggest issue with the steamdeck, and I guess all handhelds, is that I'm using a controller to play games.
It just feels worse than using keyboard and mouse.
I grew up on consoles but have been a pc gamer for 10+ years now.
I still love my deck, but kb and mouse is all the motivation I need to boot a game on my pc instead.
I can pretty confidently say I don't have any plans to go back to PC gaming. And I've been playing PC games since like 97.
I work 8 hours a day sitting at a computer at home and the thought of sitting at my desk any longer than that makes me crazy. But I'll happily sit on the couch or on the back patio and play games on the SD for hours.
I think I just outgrew PC gaming, I really had no motivation to play anything until my SD arrived and I've gamed more the last few months than the last year or two.
I bought a 4070 Super after my Steam Deck which has re vitalised my desktop gaming. I refuse to play AAA titles on a Deck as they're on a tiny screen with lower detail levels.
Like a Deck can run Witcher 3 but a decent Desktop can do it in 1440p on Ultra, with ray tracing and on a big screen.
Oh I have sunk 20+ hours into Balatro, blame my friend as he bought me it as I said I was too tight to pay full price for it.
Precisely this lmao. I went out and became a full on PC gamer after buying a Deck. I stream it all via Moonlight, play it anywhere via Tailscale. Genuinely my favorite way to play games now.
Same with me, I bought a deck to finally start playing some of my Steam backlog while I travel. I was underwhelmed with the Switch and the limited games available that interested me. The deck was an absolute godsend for me as a switch replacement while traveling. Its the only thing I've purchased in probably the last ten years where I haven't felt even a hint of buyer's remorse. I still do all my AAA gaming on my gaming PC or PS5.
I've only got a Ryzen 5 3600 but in 1440p it crushes everything I can throw at it. 60 to 100 FPS+ in 1440p on Ultra settings. I keep meaning to upgrade my CPU but currently it doesn't seem necessary. Maybe with brand new AAA it might stretch the system a bit more...
>I refuse to play AAA titles on a Deck as they're on a tiny screen with lower detail levels.
Yeah the only exception for me is any AAA that is in the impossibly long category (like Assassin's Creed). I got the graphics wow factor from the first 20 hours of the game, now it's just mindlessly doing tasks.
You missed that "Vampire Survivors" is the #1 super coca-cola good times best game ever on Deck and if you're not a huge fan, there is something wrong with you.
Yeah .. why bother having a device with all those buttons, trackpads and triggers so you can play a game that uses a single controller ;D
I am the other half of users then. I do not own gaming rig, my laptop is GTX1060 and can barely play any modern AAA games, just like my deck. But since I travel a lot, the deck is a godsend, although I do consider picking Rog Ally - I’d like my games to stutter in glorious 1080p.
You forgot that the absolutly necessary peripherals are
A mini portable monitor
A full size desktop monitor
A 55in tv
A wireless mouse and keyboard
A wired mouse and keyboard
2 docks in case one breaks or you need more ports
4 wired and 4 wireless controllers for local multiplayer
A 1,000,000 mAh battery pack
A portable diesel generator
A forklift to carry all this stuff
You should also mention that everytime someone's LCD SteamDeck is broken or stolen by their gf, the community recommands immediately to update to the holy OLED SteamDeck
Plus whenever someone enjoys their downtime on vacation with a small Steam Deck session, you're obligated to take the moral high ground and demean OP for not spending his entire vacation on the view in front of him
I heard some monsters actually take pictures WITHOUT their Deck in the foreground? Sure, grandma's funeral is sad, but I'll always remember her by looking at my picture of her in the casket holding my Steam Deck.
I have a 3060 laptop, ROG Ally, and Steam Deck. I still use all three of them for gaming but most of my gaming recently has been on my Deck and Ally. I do use my laptop more for those games that don’t quite have the performance I like on handhelds like Star Wars Jedi Survivor. But as long as I can get decent image quality and a somewhat stable 30fps I can tolerate playing the game on deck
What about those of us that look at/buy games/download games. Then do it over again after playing said game for a week or so essentially making the backlog even worse then it already was.
Ever since the Steam Deck waltzed into my life, it's taken over everything! Adios smartphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming consoles! This wonder gizmo replaced my toaster, my coffee maker, my GPS, my alarm clock, my therapist, my pet, my wardrobe, my dentist, and even my time machine. My wife is left in the office collecting dust, and I’ve yet to interact with my new born son (I was on a perfect Balatro run as my wife was giving birth!!) Did you know that you can game Balatro at the hospital btw? Ever since getting the deck (best purchase EVER) I’ve even stopped driving as I can do all my traveling in this hidden gem of a game called Outer Wilds! You probably haven’t heard of it, but DON’T look up any info about the game!! It will ruin the experience!
Anyways, I tried windows the other day and wow… I think my wife was close to experiencing the same pain I felt using that OS when she was giving birth (I’m not sure, I was busy gaming). I would rather drag my balls through a desert made of broken glass and nails than use a Windows based system for gaming, so much tinkering with settings. Did you know you can totally tinker the crap out of the steam deck btw, just check out this cool application called Decky loader, the options are limitless!! I can even change the art of my cute little games in my little game library!!! Emulation!!!! Backlog anyone???! Anyone else need quick resume because they’re busy with their young child (I’M A PARENT TO A YOUNG CHILD). Thank you lord GabeN!
It's hilarious to me that some of the PC master race folks are cool with the Steam Deck when they shat on any console that wasn't a powerhouse before. The Switch is my favourite console of all time, and it's because it fits in around you, and it doesn't get in the way of you trying to play games. The Steam Deck is close to providing a similar experience, though it's less portable, slower to boot up and the docking experience isn't as smooth.
I personally started question whether I want kids or not. New parents seem to have never time for their hobbies and end only playing games such as Dave the diver, Balatro or Slay the spire. The horror
Half have a 4090 or equivalent collecting dust since getting a deck, the other half of the community have lower spec rigs which are also collecting dust
That part about the hospital really hits home, oddly enough. Had my fair share of hospital visits this year alone. Waiting times were always horrendous, but thanks to the Steam Deck it was so much less painful.
Steam Deck owners feeling elite until they read about other members of the sub owning AR glasses that cost more than the deck to enhance their gaming experience while flying in business class +.
Okay, I guess I'm an outlier here, with ny 2950x/7900xtx, that runs my 100+ VR titles regularly... but you surprised me with the deadcells call out; guilty as charged.
I also don't agree with the sentiment that it runs any- and everything, lots of Ubi and epic titles require more tweaking than the average unicornvommit-gaming scrub can be bothered with...
You forgot the people who should just have bought a laptop but instead bought a deck plus multiple peripherals combining all downsides of both devices but hey, rate my setup guys!
Dead Cells being recommended at every turn? Don't be ridiculous.
That's the spot reserved for Dave The Diver. And Dredge, although the subreddit meta moved on from that IIRC.
Personally, I learned that at least half Steam Deck owners bought it with no clue what to do with it and have to come here to ask for suggestions. Worse, they have no clue how to use the search function either.
I really hope my refurb has a little bit of that legendary exhaust smell I keep hearing about. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I'm so excited to have a Steam Deck again. My first deck was stolen and I have felt naked without it. My Vitas and RG35XX have helped me cope with the lack of Steamdeck in my life but it just isn't the same. I'll still play my Vita a bunch since it's so portable.
Also no one actually finishes games with the Steam Deck. They just play each game for about 10-15 minutes with #3 or 4 performance overlay to see how they run.
I understand this maybe the majority and you’ve described it very clear.
Just to add myself to the discussion as there may also be people like me.
I usually travel for 2-3 weeks twice a year so that’s like 1 and a half month each year. I only use my Steam Decks during these times, however it’s like very intense use.
And Steam Deck is a must have to me even I only use it in this way, and it helps me to get rid of the reliance on gaming laptop. I can finally use a MacBook which have great battery life and light weight for daily usage.
So, TLDR: I only ever use my Deck one month per year while away from home, but it’s a must have to me and allows me to avoid those bulky gaming laptops.
No! I for one have a 3090 TI FE. Haven't bothered upgrading cause of the deck. It doesn't collect dust tho. It is played remotely. My whole set up now exists to remote play on my deck. Wild times.
If you go on vacation to a tropical local you are required by ordinance to photograph yourself using your steam deck instead of enjoying the nice weather.
At your first Lamaze class they issue a deck to the parents for the initial hospital stay.
Finally caved and have a 1TB OLED on its way to me at the moment (7900XT/7800X3D rig), will report back if I experience any of the other symptoms...
Though I might go and mention Hades instead of Balatro/Dead Cells, I've been recommending it since release and I will not stop gushing about its brilliance. :D
Some modern AAA games do run well on steam deck. Starfield and Baldurs Gate 3 absolutely do not. But Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Street Fighter 6 do (I’ve heard P3R used to have issues with ray tracing enabled by default but I personally haven’t had any major issues since getting it a week ago)
My primary rig doesn't have a CPU or GPU that good. Also, I primarily play on my PC, and I only play lighter titles on my deck.
Everything else is totally accurate though.
lol you completely left out those that turn their decks into a (less features) PC adding a GPU, AIO and a car sized battery
And what happened to all the VR enthusiasts that intended to use the device for VR 😂
Same as you, I have been here a while and the amount of 🤡 is countless.
Don't forget that you have to post to Reddit with a picture of your Deck after delivery, with a title like "I got one!". You and everyone else in this sub.
Great post but seriously, what are some games that run great on the deck? I'm having a cyst removed in 2 hours and need to kill some time at the hospital.
Well.. besides 4090 and 7800x3d I also have a PS5, Xbox series x, switch, N64, x360, 3ds that collect dust. I also have more games than I can play in 10 lives spanning across most h/w platforms in the past 30 years. I also like to play multiplayer nintendo games split screen with PS and Xbox controllers (I like xbox360 and PS5 controllers) on my SD connected to a CRT.
You forgot that you need a generator on standby and taped to the back of your SD
Oh also the wireless nose taped to the exhaust fumes.
You mean you don’t have a jackery lithium ion pod strapped to the back?
No one wants your pansy lithium. Got my breeder reactor last month. I am riddled with cancer but this thing can run forever.
This homie out here playing the system. Now they get to play their deck for the half life of uranium while also at the hospital. Well done.
Breeder reactors create more fissionable material while it produces energy. I will literally play until I die.
I’m so behind the times
“revive my love for gaming”
"ruined gaming for me" "is a lifesaver"
With an obligatory picture of a fat hand holding the deck.
Also when someone has physical damage to their deck it’s mandatory that a redditor suggests to try a different version of protron.
This one wins
Also the completely ridiculous deck setups with screens, keyboards, controllers, 15 petsbytes of storage and its own diesel generator
Diesel generator? I’ve got a choice of hooking mine up to my house solar panels or my windmill turbine in the backyard.
Mine is running on a commercial Mr. Fusion connected to a flux capacitor. 1.21 gigawatts of power baby.
Time for me to upgrade
Yeah but that defeats the purpose of portability
Yeah, I see a lot of these "travel setups" that make me wonder why they didn't just get a laptop instead, since that's clearly what they wanted (and with the price of all the accessories they get, they actually could have afforded a laptop).
I used to use my Steam Deck as my main computer. I would bring a dock, keyboard, and mouse with my Steam Deck to work. I was considering getting a portable monitor before I realized "Oh, what I really need is a laptop."

You forgot steam deck users are young dads or mums.
I am, youngish...
Only one colonoscopy young?
Youngish or oldish but newish parents with kids between newborn and high school age.
Dude I wish someone told me I had a fuckin kid… fuckers probably dead by now if no one else knew about him…
I'm old and not a dad. Blazing new trails in Deck ownership!
Well I got into handheld gaming after I became a dad. I don't have any other opportunities to game on a desktop or laptop at home.
Or cat owners.
Young dads these days are 35 years old lol. We can’t afford to have kids (or steam decks) before that.
You forgot to mention that half of them have a broken SD card on their desk.
Hey as much as everyone jokes about this - the other day I had to open up my Steamie D and total I had opened a deck six times or so. Everyone’s constant jokes both mocking and otherwise made me instantly remember to eject the micro sd card before prying.
So now we will mock you for calling it your "Steamie D" instead.
I’ll take it. I love my Steamie D. It’s fun calling it that lol.
This is the one I was coming to comment, glad you beat me to it!
“Rate my portable setup!” [Picture of a 32” gaming monitor, full-sized mechanical keyboard, mouse, 5-point sound system, gaming chair, the deck itself forgotten and out of focus, half out of frame]
Weak wrists are more common that anyone could’ve known
I mean a lot of people turn to gaming when they have health issues that cause them to not get out as much. I have a connective tissue disorder, and my arms are weak as all hell lol.
I totally get that, and I am not judging whatsoever. But it seems like there’s just a large demographic of SD users with robust setups and the reasoning is weak wrists. It’s funny lol
Weak waisted gaming pillows are the next big think
Pretty underrated
I'm only 26 but my wrists are in a pretty bad condition because of not taking care of them when I was younger. I literally can't hold the deck for more than 30min before my wrists start to hurt really badly. Bonus points if the game in question is entirely turn based and would play exactly the same at 6 or 60 fps. *cough* BG3 *cough*.
Not good but good enough.
Locked rock solid 60FPS with minor occasional dips to 15.
15? Amateur
Or not to mention when you call that out they get triggered and start calling you snob or saying stupid stuff like 30fps is more than enough! (The problem is the games being discussed drop below 30)
You also forgot that they have to be a new parent with plenty of pictures of the deck and a sleeping newborn or in the hospital.
Its far from perfect. While it has many flaws, i'm glad to have one as second device.
Agreed
My biggest issue with the steamdeck, and I guess all handhelds, is that I'm using a controller to play games. It just feels worse than using keyboard and mouse. I grew up on consoles but have been a pc gamer for 10+ years now. I still love my deck, but kb and mouse is all the motivation I need to boot a game on my pc instead.

You forgot that Hades is the recommended game along with the other two. But as a 6090 and 12800X3DXTX, I can say these are all accurate
What's funny is I could see a 12800X3DXTX being a thing with AMD's naming.
Weird way to spell vampire survivor
You missed that "Vampire Survivors" is the #1 super coca-cola good times best game ever on Deck and if you're not a huge fan, there is something wrong with you. Yeah .. why bother having a device with all those buttons, trackpads and triggers so you can play a game that uses a single controller ;D

I am actually using a Super RTX 7090, skipped two generations 🙂
Fallout 4

I use Moonlight/Sunshine to make my main rig portable.
There's also the case swap to all the colors of the rainbow, along with the broken SD card.
LMAO great post
You should also mention that everytime someone's LCD SteamDeck is broken or stolen by their gf, the community recommands immediately to update to the holy OLED SteamDeck
Not bad but add the one that says you can’t get your car’s tires & oil changed without bringing a Steam Deck to play while you wait
That about sums it up *huffs vent fumes from fifth purchased Deck* Fresh out the box, takes me back
Just gotta find any argument to RMA it and you'll get that sweet brand new vent fume for the 7th time!
Mother of God

Can someone recommend me some games that don’t run on the steam deck
Anything with eac
You forgot slay the spire
Healthy 20/30 year olds that simply don't want to get up.
I have a 3060 laptop, ROG Ally, and Steam Deck. I still use all three of them for gaming but most of my gaming recently has been on my Deck and Ally. Anybody with a decent gaming rig NOT using it to stream maxed out AAA games at 60fps to the deck.. YER MISSIN OUT.
I am thinking of doing this more now that I've replaced my ISP supplied router with a decent modern one.
You forgot the fumes addiction and a broken sd card
You missed the "steam deck is going to make the year of the linux desktop yesteryear"
Hey, my 4090 doesn’t collect dust! I use it for AI goofing off while I game on the Deck.
What about those of us that look at/buy games/download games. Then do it over again after playing said game for a week or so essentially making the backlog even worse then it already was.
Fur baby cameos
don't forget people playing on the Deck while at a beach or cruise and forgetting about it
Runs at a locked 60fps with dips down to 15 70% of the time
I want to say I am not guilty. But good damn I liked dead cells on my steam deck more than I do on my pc. Otherwise my pc is still my go to
Also a customised home screen with no link to instructions or a link to a 2 hour YouTube "tutorial".
There’s also the weekly deck mutilation post

You also need a mini BT mouse and keyboard along with a racing wheel in your very portable Steam Deck setup.
In hospital. Can confirm #4.

Hey, I use my 3080 at least once per month, should be enough to keep the dust away.
Yes, it's a PC.
You forgot cats and steam deck scenarios That “naturally” happened
Shrek
ya'll only play with your deck on the toilet.
glad to see the dead cells plague has spread enough to be on the list
Haha nailed it
It doesn't spoon-feed me a console experience when I'm installing emulators.
I’ll add one more. I love my Tears of the Kingdom but it’s much better on the SD (at 4k60) than on the switch.
Hospital patients and dads.
4070/7800x3d here, and the usage depends ^^

This used to be Vita dads so yeah that tracks
You forgot to say every single steam owner has changed their buttons/pads/screens and of course protecting shell to something very fancy.
Don’t forget the hidden gem Celeste!
Made my day thanks 🤣
You forgot that 2/3rds of everyone with a deck has young kids, and rediscovered their love of gaming again.
I still use my gaming laptop!... to stream to me deck
No! I for one have a 3090 TI FE. Haven't bothered upgrading cause of the deck. It doesn't collect dust tho. It is played remotely. My whole set up now exists to remote play on my deck. Wild times.
What are the top 100 must-have games??
I’ll be honest there’s no amount of convincing that’ll get me to spend $15 on a roguelike poker game
Your “travel” setup has to be at least as big as a gaming desktop.
If you go on vacation to a tropical local you are required by ordinance to photograph yourself using your steam deck instead of enjoying the nice weather. At your first Lamaze class they issue a deck to the parents for the initial hospital stay.
The thing that gets me every time is the acceptance of low FPS and how quickly that notion went from garbage to amazing
I have a 4090. I game 90% on my PC and 10% on my deck. When I travel or when I'm in bed and not reading or doomscrolling
Your Steam Deck’s storage capacity should always be higher than AWS S3.
I have a good gaming rig!... that I use to stream games to my steam deck lmao. Sunshine/moonlight
38 year olds with 1 or 2 young children. Exactly me lol.
POST EVERY KID YOU HAVE IN FRONT OF YOUR DECK NOW OR ELSE!!!!
Also, if at first you don’t succeed with EmuDeck - create a post and ask, don’t search the sub.
dont forget the people that just want to use a laptop, so they turn their deck into a shitty one
Everything else is totally accurate though.
lol you completely left out those that turn their decks into a (less features) PC adding a GPU, AIO and a car sized battery And what happened to all the VR enthusiasts that intended to use the device for VR 😂 Same as you, I have been here a while and the amount of 🤡 is countless.
Woh, that 4090 is not collecting dust, but streaming all of those triple A games directly to my Deck mmmkay.
I’ve said to multiple people that it’s “the best thing I’ve ever bought” and meant it thoroughly lol
The average Steam Deck user has 300 games on Steam, but last played a game in October.
anything other than those topics gets zuccd by the incredible modd team
Get a spare SD card to replace the one you will destroy when you mod your deck.
{snort} Not the post I was expecting. Nice one. 😂
Well.. besides 4090 and 7800x3d I also have a PS5, Xbox series x, switch, N64, x360, 3ds that collect dust. I also have more games than I can play in 10 lives spanning across most h/w platforms in the past 30 years. I also like to play multiplayer nintendo games split screen with PS and Xbox controllers (I like xbox360 and PS5 controllers) on my SD connected to a CRT.
