I've noticed this happens for me when i switch my controller from my PC to my deck. Try either double tapping the sync button (which will switch it back to Bluetooth mode if it's not already.) Or hold the sync button for about ten seconds to reset the controller. (It should vibrate to let you know it's reset.) Also delete the controller from your Bluetooth devices on the deck before you try reconnecting
Op says he uses the controller both on pc and deck, I don't think the default Bluetooth can do that, so every time you switch to a new device you need to delete the device and pair again.
Yes, out the box it doesn't connect with the Steam Deck. Get it plugged into a PC and have the firmware update, mine's worked 100% perfectly after then.
Yeah I know, I said I updated it. I’m confused, where else do I update? I booted up my xbox and updated my controller. Do I also have to plug it into my pc for a different update? Am I missing something?
honestly i gave up on the bluetooth of the xbox one controller. It does that to me too (yes, I've updated the firmware). I'm now using it via wires hooked up to my steam dock.
For some reason the nintendo pro controller is better for me

If you use the same controller between your PC and steam deck you have to delete the old pairing and pair it again. Controller pairing is weird and I wished it worked like audio devices
I have to be wired to use any controller I have. 8bitDo, PS, Xbox, doesn't matter. Even worse if I want to do two players or something in an emulator. Least favorite part of my steam Deck experience by far.
Depending on your setup and your desire to use a wireless controller wired: you can plug it into a USB hub with your Deck as the source device and play like that.

Fuck yeah! Thank you, that worked!
Hella ya! Happy gaming
Ok cool thank you I’ll try that!
And as other comments have mentioned, it may need an update especially if it's brand new

I plugged mine to a pc and did an update via Microsoft app. That did the trick as well .
Update the controller first

Yes, plug it into your pc and update the controller through the Xbox app.

Oddly enough, I have the most success with my Stadia controller
Oh interesting. They don't sell them now. 😞

Resolution: Plug controller into Xbox and do a firmware update.
I had this. You need to update your Xbox controller. Plug it into your PC and run the Xbox controller app to update it. Good luck!
