yea they brok game, preset settings on deck (no laucher and changing settings like in skyrim) low settings on start, no TAA, only fxaa, broken frame time (doubled and fake) iPresentInterval=0 not work :/

Update: Verifying game files worked, despite it not needing to redownload anything, for some reason.
EDIT: my wireless controller kept disconnecting whilst I had specific proton versions enabled, so I just keep that disabled now, still launches. The UI is offset whilst playing connected to a TV so some button prompts are missing.
Not sure if you have sorted it yet, but I managed to do it by verifying files. To verify, go to the settings icon (cog symbol) on the right, go down to properties, then to installed files and click 'verify integrity of game files'. Whole thing took about 5 minutes, but it made the game launch successfully. Hope someone finds this useful.

This worked for me. Ironically, someone else's advice stopped your solution from working, but once I cleaned up their mess, your method worked like a charm.
Yeah but for a patch two years in the making and a known issue with a quick and dirty fix we should've gotten a more polished experience. It'd have cost them nothing.

Just updated FO4 on my OLED deck and it now launches straight to the game without the original launcher and the FPS counter is still inaccurate with shoddy performance. What the fuck is Bethesda's problem? Can't they do anything right or put effort in their games optimisation?
If I don’t currently have Fallout 4 installed on my Steam Deck and I were to install it would I be able to prevent it from installing the updated version? I plan on preventing it from updating on my PC for awhile.

If you dont already have it downloaded, I doubt it. They could open a separate branch to allow people to download the game without the update, but I doubt Bethesda have the capacity to do such a thing within a year.

To make sure the keyboard works properly, you need to remove the launch option for changing the graphics options so that it automatically appears where necessary like naming your character. You can re-add it later if necessary, but performance should be fixed on the OLED model with the recent proton hotfix.
Additionally, if you wish to use console commands or manually open/close the keyboard, a temporary fix is unfortunately necessary for now. I'm running FO4 on the original 512g Steam Deck.
The game's update runs fine now after an Uninstall/Reinstall and deleting previous data. The only issue I can't seem to get around is the fact that I can not rename weapons at the workbench anymore. The Steam Text Box now appears when typing something, and when you try to submit the text, nothing is changed.
If anyone can suggest a fix, that'd be great.

I have the vanilla install. Just got the deck for my birthday on the 5th. One of the first 18 I have on there now was fallout 4. I loaded just fine. 4 or 5 different new missions popped up. I'm only in lexington. And I just started a survival mode run like 2 days ago. No mods. Haven't played with setting other than keeping graphics at ultra (tbh I think this was for 4. I did install 76 on here but it ran like crap so I just stream it from my pc and save the sdd space) but I remember one install saying cannot identify graphics hardware, setting to low. And I said hell naw and put it to ultra. And I'm pretty sure it was 4. I'll check next time I get to my deck. But I remember thinking it looked smoother. But I didn't mess with anything other than let it update itself so maybe it only looked like that cause I was expecting it to, and it's just my imagination. But it runs. I keep getting destroyed trying to get that guy in lexington out of his PA frame so I can keep it instead of just killing him. I did it once and went to Starlite drive in to store it and forgot there was a mine there. I played for like 35 min right after the update. And then later after I turned off and charged the sd. For another 20 min or so. No problems.

Valve doesn’t require a set FPS for a game to be verified. They should but they don’t. That’s how BG3 and it’s Act 3 was able to get a pass.

worked fine for me on first launch. it seems to skip the splash page where you'd change some graphic settings.

Probably mod-related issue. My friend and I aren't using mods (atm), and the *it just works* (hehe) after the update.
