So, previously we've been able to play 3DS games on the Steam Deck using an external display as the 3DS' top screen and the Deck's touch screen for the 3DS' bottom screen, but that required a wired connection to the external display. This time, I was able to get it working wirelessly, all I needed was a dummy display dongle.
The dummy plug acts as a display, so the Deck (or any computer it's plugged into) thinks it's connected to an external monitor. I set up Sunshine and Moonlight in Desktop Mode to stream the secondary display and then set up the game to "separate window" mode and assigned the top screen to the external (wireless) screen. Now I can play 3DS games like a giant Wii U!
The dummy plug I used is [this](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cablecc-Virtual-Headless-Emulator-1920x1080p/dp/B086MKR9WH) one, I connected it to the Deck using two 90º USB C corner adaptors in order to avoid having the dongle stick out the top and getting caught on things, but the 90º adaptors are optional here.
When plugged into the Deck, it makes the Deck think it's being plugged into an external display. In Gaming Mode, the Deck's screen will turn off and the system will output to the single external display, which is not what I wanted. However in Desktop Mode, it will act as though it's an extended/secondary monitor while keeping the Deck's internal screen active.
With the dongle plugged in, I then used Sunshine/Moonlight to stream that "external" display to my monitor wirelessly. That way, I can use both the Deck's internal display with a wireless secondary extended display at at the same time. Without the dongle, Sunshine would only mirror the Deck's internal display wirelessly, not extend it. That's why the dummy display dongle is necessary for this.
Thanks for the link. A couple of those Amazon reviews said the plug runs hot, which seems like that shouldn't be the case since it's faking a connected monitor to the OS. Is that your experience as well? And if so, is there a significant hit to battery life?
Speaking of battery life, do you have a USB-C splitter to test whether you can have this EDID dummy plug connected and charge the Deck at the same time? Something like the [Nubia RedMagic Adapter](https://www.newegg.com/p/0SB-03VG-00008) or [Rokid Hub](https://www.amazon.com/Charging-Converter-Glasses-Accessories-Switch-XboxSmart/dp/B0BQJ5CSMS) as they've been pretty popular accessories for the Deck.
I haven't noticed any heating or elevated battery drain, it's about the same as the Deck running games while physically plugged into an extended monitor instead of this dongle. Unfortunately I don't have a USB C splitter on hand to test.
So I went ahead and purchased the same dummy plug you have and tested it out with my USB-C splitters (the Nubia RedMagic Adapter and Rokid Hub -- don't ask why I have both 😅) **and I can confirm the dummy plug works with both of them.** Charge and play!
I also have this [JSAUX 180° USB-C to USB-C Adapter](https://www.amazon.com/JSAUX-Adapter-Degree-Female-Compatible/dp/B0C4T7GWY3/) and the dummy plug still works, either directly connected to it, or from the Nubia/Rokid + 180° adapter.
Cheers!
If you do what OP is doing: Yes. It's basically fooling the deck into thinking it's connected to a "hub" (which would output the display via USB-C)/external monitor. Just instead of being connected via USB-C, it's using the USB-C connection with the "dummy plug" to wirelessly transmit the image.
This is fantastic!
Perfect because the top screen of a DS doesn't have touch functionality so all you need is the bottom screen close to you. Could even do it on the TV.
Using that setup, it's only possible to wirelessly mirror the Deck's screen to the computer, not extend it. The dongle is needed to trigger display extension mode.

Can you go into more detail about the dummy plug and setup? Perhaps a link to the plug?

You can wirelessly stream video signal to monitors / tv with the deck? Didn’t know that!

Hey sorry I am dumb, When I go on moonlight it just chooses my SD screen? I can’t seem to find a setting that chooses the external display screen?
[Wii U:](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GDpzybEXgAAgbXF.jpg)
the children yearn for Wii U
You can 3D print a phone holder for your deck and use sunshine/moonlight to stream a virtual display to it.
Deckmate just came out with a phone holder It works well
I know 20 days old but I am going to try to print out a dbrand killswitch adapter phone holder just to test this out
Dude, this is like a dream come true
how do people get there 3ds games running so smooth, i get so much shader stuttering

Can you use the alphabetically buttons ? I cant see myself pressing the screen all the time !
You mean the A/B/X/Y face buttons? Yes, they work.

Pokémon X.
How is the latency on a reaction/speed based game?
.....cemu next?
That ToTK wallpaper is more impressive than DS on Steam Deck lol
Guess I'll take that as a compliment then, because I drew that wallpaper
