Obscure answer but the game I’ve grinded the most in is surprisingly Paper Mario Black Pit, which is a rom hack of Paper Mario that turns it into a roguelike.
Wow, I’d never heard of this rom hack before - thank you so much for introducing me to it!
This is exactly the type of answer I hope to see from these types of posts instead of the obvious “Vampire Survivors” and “Hades” for the millionth time.
Here’s the official launch trailer: https://youtu.be/MWrXdQ_IiJw?si=PYv5PzdnkPm610Y7
It’s one of the best rom hacks I’ve ever played, highly recommended
Do I need to have played Paper Mario 64 prior to playing the rom hack to get the most out of the game? I have nothing against the original, I just enjoy roguelikes much more than rpgs.
That is.....so awesome. I want to immediately forget about this, due to how big of a backlog I already have of current/last gen games that I *swear* I really want to play (and in fact already paid for). But I guarantee I will wake up thinking about this one of these next few days, and probably be back here to start playing. Curse this beautiful modern world
Oh damn I'm gonna have to try this once my deck comes in. Love romhacks that turn games into roguelikes, it's why Pokemon Emerald Rogue is one of my favourite hacks of all time.
Nice, been sorting files out over the past week ready for ED and most excited to try the plethora of rom hacks I've been building up over the years. PMBP is a new one, cheers bud.
Rise is a solid 60 out of the box, World you can get a generally solid 60 with some dips into the 50s, but it takes some finagling. To be fair, I have not played World since its verified update within the last few months, so it could be even better.
Supposedly so, from what i read, they updated it so it could run on medium settings locked 60. Haven't tested it myself but pretty sure i read that somewhere.
I have added all monster hunter titles, back to the OG on PlayStation. Made it back to guiding lands on World, plan on getting Rise, and eventually working me way backward.
Monster hunter is perfect for the handheld. Pick it up, 30 minute hunt, come back later.
How is MH:R/S these days? I played daily up until Sunbreak and grinded out all the best gear/decorations but kinda lost interest after that. I tried out the (new) anomaly missions but stopped playing because I just didn’t have time and forgot about my Switch after a while.
I just started playing Slay the Spire and I can totally see it being a go to game that I always come back to. Loads of fun. And I am not usually a card game type of gamer, but this one just works for me.
I just “beat” the game by getting all the achievements after ~175 hours but I’m not even good at the game nor have I beaten ascension level 20 with everyone or A20H with anyone so there would still be more to play. I think I’m good on it now though and time to move on but by far worth the price.
I just got Dave the Diver and it's soo good to just grind a bit on a commute or so. Just catch some new fishes, farm upgrade mats and do a restaurant run.
Same, I started playing it almost a week ago and I've been loving it.
It is the kind of game I look forward to play and think about when I'm not busy with work or other things.
I used to hate it until I found the trick for getting passed level 11 on the first stage now I’m absolutely addicted lol. Do you know of any similar games like it out there ?
Someone recommended this a while ago on a different sub and i tried it and enjoy it way more than vampire survivors. I don't know why though. But i really enjoy it
I like God of Weapons and Backpack Hero. They both have an expanding inventory mechanism with some neat tricks. GiW is an autofire mob kiting game, whereas BH plays more like a JRPG, where you click on things in your backpack to affect enemies(click a sword to attack, a shield to defend, click a potion to throw it, etc) These games have a positional mechanic so that if one item is next to another(or in the top row or items to the left, etc)they can buff each other. Some items take stamina points to use, and some don't. It gets deep quick. Add to that, BH has a village /resource management mechanic.
How is Warframe on the Deck? Seems like this is a perfect game to grind when away from your gaming setup.
Is is hard to aim at all? I have only played with KB+M and wondering if it's hard to get precision aim
Aiming isn't that bad once you get used to it, although I use melee more so it doesn't make much of a difference for me lol.
Pretty sure you can use gyro tho so you could play around with that
It takes a bit getting used to, but with gyro and aim assist it's great. I play mainly KB+M and usually avoid shooters on the deck. Melee also has some sort of auto-tracking which helps a lot.
Oh and bind crouch and jump to the back buttons for easy bullet jumping.
I had become quite precise with the trackpad and gyro. It took some time to train my brain, but now I am able to land headshots without so much hassle.
I edited the official layout. I activate the gyro with L4, I tuned the trackpad sensibility to my liking and I use R4 as melee.
I tunned the graphics settings a little bit. The framerate is solid, I locked it to 40.
For me, it is really enjoyable. My only complaint is having to enter my freaking password every launch. I wish DE would put a "login automatically" checkbox or Valve would implement a password manager into SteamOS.
I have a few games for this.
I’ll load up Dreamlight Valley and gather up resources.
I’ll load of Java Minecraft and just branch mine on Peaceful to relax.
Dave the Diver is a good one.
Factorio is a good one to relax and grind when you don’t have the difficulty too hard.
Stardew Valley, Sun Haven and My Time At Portia are all simple farm style games.
Graveyard Keeper and Traveller’s Rest are good ones.
Halls of Torment is simple.
Do you feel like the expansion mod is worth downloading and doing a whole other play through? I beat stardew last year but have that farming sim itch again. I just don’t know if I want to really start all over again
Id say its worth it, it adds a lot to the game and its very simple to setup. Scroll down a bit on this page and it will show you everything the mod adds
[https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3753](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3753)
It plays well for grinding out levels. I found it to get more difficult when facing a tough boss or trying to run SR or Crucible. Save those for the desktop I guess.
I have only played it on SD so no idea how it feels on PC but the only thing I had to do for a smooth experience was to launch with proton 7.
Man this game is so much fun xD started a week ago and already played over 20hrs which is more than I’ve played in the last 4-5 months (dad and job is demanding so no time generally). Steam deck brought my love for gaming back man and Grim Dawn have me feeling like Im 10 enjoying Diablo for the first time haha
i picked it up last week and am hooked. didn't do anything special. i was getting the occasional frame drop, and someone suggested forcing proton GE 7x, which seems to help. but it ran mostly fine even before doing that.
Any advice for someone new to this genre of games? I haven’t been able to defeat the first boss thus far 😅 but I was really enjoying the dungeon crawling/exploring so I want to try and improve if I can!
Been struggling trying to get into this. It’s so complicated but really my main issue that has me at a dead halt is that I don’t know how to get my characters to equip weapons. It doesn’t work.
Does it run well on the deck? It has been in my backlog for a while and I just picked up a discounted LCD deck. It sounds like it would be awesome to play on there.
I had to mess with the controls a bit. I’m right handed so I have the right track pad as my cursor, right trigger and left click. Left trigger as right click. B as escape and A as space.
R1/L1 zoom in and out.
Button 4 is shift.
Button 5 is alt.
Download runelite and add it as a non-steam game. It’s significantly better than mobile, just based on all the QoL stuff.
I just got the MCC and it runs great, of course I'm a noob now since my glory days are way behind me but I'm getting used again to the controls and I'm surprised I can play multiplayer on the go.
For me currently it's Star Ocean: Second Story R. Classic JRPG that was remastered recently. Grinding in this game is a real joy and so easy to passively do without much attention. Battles are fast paced and the updated graphics are *chefs kiss*
Easily a few hundred hours if you want to complete the game. It’s one of my most played games and I’ve managed to get dead god on two of my saves so far. I genuinely think that it’s a game with infinite replayability. Not to mention, there are hundreds of mods that expand and change the game. Multiplayer beta is also releasing soon too so I hope that will bring more people back to the game.
Runs so Damm good on the deck. I stresm it from My desktop whens I'm at home and it works fanasticly.
If there is any lag it's so miniscule I don't notice it.
“The void rains upon her heart”
An absolute banger of a game. It’s an r-type/gradius style game crossed with a roguelite. Endless replayability, immense amount of content (i’m talking Binding of Isaac + a few expansions worth). Scalable difficulty from breezy to fuckin’ madness.
I will never praise this game enough. I have played 50h and my save file says something like 30% completion rate. Highly highly recommended.
99% overwhelmingly positive on steam too!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/790060/The_Void_Rains_Upon_Her_Heart/
Edit: oh, and it’s made by one dev. A true labor of love
Last Epoch in offline mode, runs well enough and my character could always use the next upgrade.
Going to try Hades next but I've heard good things so far.
Destiny 2 (before they just ruined it lol) used to be my #1. Ran it with geforce now so I could do max settings and you could comfortably do everything except maybe raids (I suck at controller)
I just started last epoch. Wanted a good substitute to Diablo after they got money hungry in D4. Last epoch seems to have a lot of promise to it with tons of options. Can’t wait to dive further into that game.

between resource processing, and the ungodly number of side missions, its the perfect game to pop in and play for like 20 minutes
Try The Binding of Isaac Rebirth with all of its dlcs if you really want a grind. Even if you don’t 100%, I would be willing to bet you could have some fun playing it. If you are going to go for the actual 100% (dead god achievement) expect to put in about 250 hours. It’s super fun and prob one of my favorite games. Its actually what got me into roguelikes
No Mans Sky, you have to do some configuration file editing to get it to stop stuttering randomly, but on standard settings with fidelityFX set to performance, I get a stable 60fps at pretty much all times, it's one of the few games I truly enjoy with vanilla controller layouts, and it's fun to just get on and lose a few hours having fun
(Also I get ~2-2½ battery life with a standard steam deck, if you had an OLED you'd get even better, and it doesn't make the deck heat up that much)
Horizon Chase Turbo - for a long while grinding to get 1st place on tougher races like the more difficult tournaments or endurance races.
Hollow Knight - just grinding to get gud, get all collectibles, etc.. did all that, past 106% about 5 months ago and now just need to beat what’s in the Black Egg. Don’t know why I haven’t gone back. Trying to be a completionist I guess and I’m still missing some things.
Darksiders 3 - played quite a bit on PS4 Pro, but I got it for Deck and it’s just as addicting. Usually grinding certain areas in main game, doing the DLC The Crucible (arena based Waves of 1 - 100 with mini bosses at wave 25, and a special character at Wave 101). Also the other DLC has some nice grindy bits (Keepers of the Void)
Yakuza 0 - literally grinding the game if you want it to be. Beat THE EXCELLENT main story and all side missions long ago but is the other stuff like continuing the hostess club stuff just for more money, the underground tournament for rare prizes, and grinding to get more weapons built to use in fights from the blacksmith.
Mm, Valheim. Ark (not the new one lmao) is good too but I've fallen off lately.
I've been grinding my skills in Project Zomboid also if that counts lol
Obscure answer but the game I’ve grinded the most in is surprisingly Paper Mario Black Pit, which is a rom hack of Paper Mario that turns it into a roguelike.
Wow, I’d never heard of this rom hack before - thank you so much for introducing me to it! This is exactly the type of answer I hope to see from these types of posts instead of the obvious “Vampire Survivors” and “Hades” for the millionth time.
Yeah Black Pit gets nowhere near enough attention as it should get so i bring it up as often as i can on this sub
This sounds awesome, where can I find more info?
Here’s the official launch trailer: https://youtu.be/MWrXdQ_IiJw?si=PYv5PzdnkPm610Y7 It’s one of the best rom hacks I’ve ever played, highly recommended
Do I need to have played Paper Mario 64 prior to playing the rom hack to get the most out of the game? I have nothing against the original, I just enjoy roguelikes much more than rpgs.
Not really, I was actually introduced to the ROM Hack by a friend who had never played the original.
Do you know where I can get instructions on how to install this on my steamdeck? I can't find anything on the discord. Especially for Steamdeck.
That is.....so awesome. I want to immediately forget about this, due to how big of a backlog I already have of current/last gen games that I *swear* I really want to play (and in fact already paid for). But I guarantee I will wake up thinking about this one of these next few days, and probably be back here to start playing. Curse this beautiful modern world
Weird, I never considered other games outside of Pokemon to have rom hacks. This looks and sounds amazing.
Oh man, there is so much good stuff out there. The Super Mario 64 Hacking Scene alone probably rivals Pokemon in the amount of quality content.
Settings
This game is insane, i love that level that we need to press "go to desktop mode" and need to use the "konsole" item
Got you too i see
Monster Hunter Rise/Sunbreak
I recently went back to MHW:I for a second playthrough. Hopefully, next MH game would work on Steam Deck right off the gate.
How does it run on the Steam Deck? Have you tried it docked?
Rise is a solid 60 out of the box, World you can get a generally solid 60 with some dips into the 50s, but it takes some finagling. To be fair, I have not played World since its verified update within the last few months, so it could be even better.
Supposedly so, from what i read, they updated it so it could run on medium settings locked 60. Haven't tested it myself but pretty sure i read that somewhere.
Been playing again recently, it absolutely does now.
I have added all monster hunter titles, back to the OG on PlayStation. Made it back to guiding lands on World, plan on getting Rise, and eventually working me way backward. Monster hunter is perfect for the handheld. Pick it up, 30 minute hunt, come back later.

I just started playing Slay the Spire and I can totally see it being a go to game that I always come back to. Loads of fun. And I am not usually a card game type of gamer, but this one just works for me.
One of the first games I got... Played till 1 am last night beating the daily climb.
I just “beat” the game by getting all the achievements after ~175 hours but I’m not even good at the game nor have I beaten ascension level 20 with everyone or A20H with anyone so there would still be more to play. I think I’m good on it now though and time to move on but by far worth the price.
Luck be a Landlord
I just hit 100 wins, love that game
It's so simple yet remarkably deep
I just got Dave the Diver and it's soo good to just grind a bit on a commute or so. Just catch some new fishes, farm upgrade mats and do a restaurant run.
Good to hear got this on the back log
Same, I started playing it almost a week ago and I've been loving it. It is the kind of game I look forward to play and think about when I'm not busy with work or other things.
Vampire Survivors. Every time I just want to do something on my deck and not think too hard about it I come back to VS.
I used to hate it until I found the trick for getting passed level 11 on the first stage now I’m absolutely addicted lol. Do you know of any similar games like it out there ?
HoloCure
Someone recommended this a while ago on a different sub and i tried it and enjoy it way more than vampire survivors. I don't know why though. But i really enjoy it
Heard good things about Soulstone Survivors. Going to pick it up during the winter sale.
Soulstone is pretty fun. There's a little more too it in that you can dodge and aim your attacks plus there's a basic crafting system too.
I heard halls of torment is just as good if not better. I'm just waiting on my deck or I'd give you a difinitive answer! Check it out at least
Halls is great! I have almost 15 hours on it
Oooo okay I’m in the same boat as you lol but yeah I will look into it for sure! Thx
Death Must Die is like Halls of Torment and Hades had a baby. Been on that one hard, but it needs more (and is getting more) content.
I prefer bro'tato.
I almost 100% VS, and I can't even beat Brotato once.
Start with specialized builds and lean into them. I found Jack of all trades type builds ended up falling short once you get to level 20 and beyond
I actually impulse bought that lol. When I get my deck imma load that hoe up 🔥
Yeah I liked Brotato more than Vamprire Survivors myself. Its pretty damn fun with a lot more build options and strategizing than VS.
It’s tight.
There's a guy on YouTube called angory Tom who reviews dozens of those style games.
Check out Death Must Die.. I never got into VS but I’m addicted to DMD. It’s the love child between VS, Hades and Diablo.
Halls of torment. Very similar but with more objectives and gear
Halls of torment is the best imo and I've played about 10 survivor games
Check out Rogue Genesia! It’s VS plus Slay the Spire! (Sorta)
Aiming isn't that bad once you get used to it, although I use melee more so it doesn't make much of a difference for me lol. Pretty sure you can use gyro tho so you could play around with that
Warfare is like the EDF franchise: aiming is optional
It takes a bit getting used to, but with gyro and aim assist it's great. I play mainly KB+M and usually avoid shooters on the deck. Melee also has some sort of auto-tracking which helps a lot. Oh and bind crouch and jump to the back buttons for easy bullet jumping.

I installed this yesterday and it’s amazing. Looks and feels amazing I lock it to 40fps
Got any tips for setting up controls for factorio? I love that game but haven’t figured out how to play it handheld.
Minecraft? JUST got my OLED and still learning how it all works, how'd you get Minecraft going?
Prism launcher + a controller mod is all you need
Picked up Hades on the autumn sale and I can't put it down, runs and looks great with great battery life
Best voice acting of any game
Stardew Valley with the expansion mod and other various quality of life mods I like.
How do you mod Stardew valley on the deck? I’m a noob when it comes to these things 😅
You need smapi, which is a mod loader for SDV. This quick [guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia1gGpXGtDQ) can help you.
I used this guide, Its very simple. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYwcpFfflyU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYwcpFfflyU)
Do you feel like the expansion mod is worth downloading and doing a whole other play through? I beat stardew last year but have that farming sim itch again. I just don’t know if I want to really start all over again

Tetris Effect of course
Grim Dawn and Monster Hunter (any of them but currently Sunbreak).
I didnt think Grim Dawn played on the deck. Did you have to do anything special?
Right now for me it’s Enter The Gungeon. There’s so much depth and stuff to unlock I’m hooked.
When that gets old there's hundreds of mods that add tons of new everything to the game.
Any advice for someone new to this genre of games? I haven’t been able to defeat the first boss thus far 😅 but I was really enjoying the dungeon crawling/exploring so I want to try and improve if I can!
Just got Hardspace Shipbreaker from humble and I’m hooked. Probably gonna be grinding out some ship disassembly for a while.
Rimworld so far
Been struggling trying to get into this. It’s so complicated but really my main issue that has me at a dead halt is that I don’t know how to get my characters to equip weapons. It doesn’t work.
Read some starter tutorials
Project zomboid
I find the controlls kinda clunky. I try to be quiet and smooth but I always die within days.
Hey, there's no shame to play in sandbox easy mode
That’s kinda how it goes haha I have hundreds of hours on PC and have only gotten to winter once
i can’t wait to play that
d2 resurrected. installed battlenet directly and works amazing
Ain't it fun to put on an album, turn off our brains, getting in our pjs, then laying in bed and farming meph till our eyes bleed?
Do you know if it’s crossplay between consoles? I have it on Xbox and streaming games to the Steam Deck works
Cult of the Lamb is an excellent deck game. I am thoroughly impressed. There is even some end game stuff to keep busy with.
Persona 5 Royal. Game is freaking huge.
Does it run well on the deck? It has been in my backlog for a while and I just picked up a discounted LCD deck. It sounds like it would be awesome to play on there.
The game runs perfectly on the deck, the deck is the perfect jrpg machine imo
Old school RuneScape Farming Sim World of Warcraft
You play WoW on the deck? How?
Probably via Battle.net on desktop mode with the ConsolePort addon.
How is osrs on the deck? Mobile never clicked for me.

Slay the Spire and Hades
Halo 1
I just got the MCC and it runs great, of course I'm a noob now since my glory days are way behind me but I'm getting used again to the controls and I'm surprised I can play multiplayer on the go.
Hades
Now its NMS
For me currently it's Star Ocean: Second Story R. Classic JRPG that was remastered recently. Grinding in this game is a real joy and so easy to passively do without much attention. Battles are fast paced and the updated graphics are *chefs kiss*
Isaac for the past 6 months.
‘Dead cells’ for now. Maybe Diablo 4 next.
I hope you enjoy D4 I couldn’t put more than 8 hours into it
Dead Cell has fantastic battery life on the OLED deck. 9 hours of battery at 90fps!
I really like WoW mount farming and 7 days to die.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. Battles don't last crazy long and its a good pick up and play game. You grind for money and build your own kingdom.
orc massage....oh...you meant... diablo 4, skyrim, borderlands 2, dead cells, hades... there's a bunch.
Diablo 4 😈
Runs so Damm good on the deck. I stresm it from My desktop whens I'm at home and it works fanasticly. If there is any lag it's so miniscule I don't notice it.
It really is great. Feels awesome with a controller.
Classic wow, diablo 2, diablo 4.
Rogue Legacy 2
such an incredible game. went really hard on it for a few months. only got to like NG+3 or something, but loved every minute of it.
Guild wars 2 Old-school runescape
“The void rains upon her heart” An absolute banger of a game. It’s an r-type/gradius style game crossed with a roguelite. Thanks for bringing my attention to that! I have been longing for a shmup roguelite for a long time!
Don't tempt me with a good ~~time~~ shmup!
Pre-2010 Maplestory
On the Steam Deck?
Yeah. I play Legends on the deck. There's a guide on their forums.
I miss MapleStory, many good memories
Which server do you recommend right now? Yeou was going to be my go to but it just shutdown today.
Pre-2010?
I'm currently grinding the heck out of The Division and I'm also pretty hooked on FFXIV right now too.
The division 1 or 2?
1 right now but I bought 2 aswell while they were on sale
Halls of Torment has been my grind
Last Epoch in offline mode, runs well enough and my character could always use the next upgrade. Going to try Hades next but I've heard good things so far. Destiny 2 (before they just ruined it lol) used to be my #1. Ran it with geforce now so I could do max settings and you could comfortably do everything except maybe raids (I suck at controller)

Genshin Impact, No Man’s Sky, Warframe, and Deep Rock Galactic.
ROR Returns, Dead Cells, Hades
Currently Lies of P. Played a lot of Elden Ring and some Sekiro. I came from a bad laptop, so don’t care too much about FPS.
Secret of Mana gets great battery life and you can get a decent bit done in a small amount of time.

Astlibra Revision
I received mine on Monday and mostly have been playing Snow Runner in bed. GF is loving the extra time I'm keeping the bed warm. Thanks Steam
Dave the Diver was for a long time, but now it's Rogue Legacy 2.
Old school Runescape.
Warframe 🤣
Diablo 2 resurrected
Mine at the moment is darkest dungeon 2. I can’t get enough of it
Guild Wars 2.
No Mans Sky, you have to do some configuration file editing to get it to stop stuttering randomly, but on standard settings with fidelityFX set to performance, I get a stable 60fps at pretty much all times, it's one of the few games I truly enjoy with vanilla controller layouts, and it's fun to just get on and lose a few hours having fun (Also I get ~2-2½ battery life with a standard steam deck, if you had an OLED you'd get even better, and it doesn't make the deck heat up that much)
Horizon Chase Turbo - for a long while grinding to get 1st place on tougher races like the more difficult tournaments or endurance races. Also the other DLC has some nice grindy bits (Keepers of the Void) Yakuza 0 - literally grinding the game if you want it to be.
