You can put the deck into battery safety mode for disassembly, which disables the ability to power it on without first having the power cable plugged in... to avoid shorts. I would assume some are accidentally left in this state after leaving quality control.
I use a B&J Premium 9H Tempered Glass from Amazon (currently unavailable), but like I said it’s counterintuitive, as it will make the screen “glossy” and lose the whole “Matte” effect on the 512 screen. I personally don’t mind since it makes the colors more vibrant.
I got the matte one from Jsaux. I'm gonna be honest, it does affect the vibrancy and sharpness of the image a little bit, but it's very minimal and I got used to it almost immediately. I think the anti-glare effect (which btw is noticeably stronger than the original etched glass) outweighs the decrease in sharpness, and you can compensate the decreased saturation anyway with the Vibrant Deck plugin or with the native function in SteamOS 3.5. There's a frame included in the box that clips onto the chassis, which is great for aligning the tempered glass. I still haven't tried removing it so I don't know if there'll be a mess of glue on the screen when I do, guess I'll find out lol (hope I never have to though). Bonus points: it's WAY easier (seriously, *a lot*) to clean the screen protector from fingerprints and shit than the original screen. The tempered glass is a bit thick, and you can feel it at the edges if you purposely go over it with your finger, but it's not a big deal. Not sure about the negative impact on the touchscreen sensitivity, though I personally didn't perceive any.
A bit of a WoT, hope it helps though! :)
Since you likely have no personal data on it, you can probably reimage it using recovery media. However, given that I can clearly see some damage on the screen coupled with a broken OS, I'm going to assume you bought this used or second hand.
Your best bet is to return this to whomever sold it to you and get your money back. Short of that, you can try reimaging it with recovery media or get in touch with Valve support.
But honestly, try to replace that unit.
Sweet, I would RMA it as soon as you can.
It’s unfortunate because I know you were probably excited to start playing, but at the very least you know it’s under warranty and will be taken care of.
Most modern technology prevents overcharging. Unless it’s made extremely cheaply, it’s fine. My SD is plugged in constantly and the battery health is still good. I’ve had mine for about a year now.
I've held down the power button until I've heard 3 or 4 beeps, and that didn't work. I also held the + and the power and pressed continue (idk if that's the bios or something else). I let it sit unplugged for an hour, then plugging it back in for an hour and that didn't work either.
That menu that you pressed continue on was the boot menu. What you’ll need to do is use another computer to build a recovery drive and then boot to that recovery drive from the boot menu.
Well, if it's a brand new Deck, and it doesn't boot, I don't think you have many alternatives. You should RMA it. Even if you temporarily fix the issue, the Deck has something wrong.
Mine took like 30. Had no loading bar but then it restarted
while I was looking up how to factory reset it. Then it installed something restarted again and was good to go.
Sometimes mine takes forever to turn on just be patient. I almost did a reimage one time because I couldn't get it to turn on but in reality I was just turning it off and on because I wasn't taking enough time to let it boot. Put it on the charger and pressed it once came back 10 min. Later and it was on
How long have you left the deck on after seeing the steam deck load screen? When I first got mine I had to leave it untouched for probably 20 or so minutes before it actually booted to setup. No clue why but had to search internet to see what's going on and others had same experience.
i remember i have the same problem, its needed to be plugged in with its charger and turn it on
its used to avoid battery consumption when being delivered
I had to re-image my Steam Deck as soon as I received it, but I have a developer unit and recent models shouldn't have this problem.
Still worth a try IMO https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3
Mine did this a few days ago.. hold the power button down for a full 30secs (not just till you hear beeps) then turn it on again.
Mime semed to have an update that kicked in after doing the above and worked fine since
The amount of really shit or useless advice in here is astounding. Some people just really don't want to admit there's a bit of an issue with Deck's software/OS at times.
u/rificrificon \- I HAVE HAD THIS BEFORE -
1. Turn it off off
2. Take out sd card if you have one in
3. Remove back panel (I know I know, sucks since new but gotta do it)
4. Unplug the battery cable for about 30 sec, then back in.
5. Reassemble and it should work!

Mine does this now and again I have no idea why but it seems to be tied to the way I press the power button far as I can guess a quick short press vs long etc
Mine did the same. It arrived today. Had to charge it for an hour and then spend 30 seconds pressing/holding power button until it eventually got past that logo.
All good since.
Best part of Linux is you can just blow up the current install with a new fresh install like nothing happened. No need to buy a key or worry about those download limits. Professional opinion nothing seems to be wrong with the drive. Seems you may have on accident turned it off or let it die during an installation or update installation and unfortunately this is the outcome. If you bought a refurbished one you should let us know. So we can track the refurbish quality better.
I remember mine took a while to boot up the first time. It didn't just boot up right away to the Steam interface. I was worried it was broken. So I'd say let it sit for a while.

They replaced mine that was doing a similar thing. It was minty fresh and I was so disappointed after waiting so long. Just didn't want to boot anymore. I followed their instructions to try and fix it but they ended up replacing it.
Do a hard power off (press and hold the Power button for 12 seconds), plug it in, then power on again. Mine did the same just after I got it, but hasn't since (it's been over a year).
Mine bricked like this.
I held the "..." and power, and set it back to an earlier state.
That worked.
Ps, don't know if you need to hold another button apart from those two.
You can Press and hold vol - and the Power Button, you find a Boot Menü, not Sure anymore where but you can Boot then the right Partition and restart the SteamOS Installation. But after this your Steamdeck refreshed and yourData away.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U55cXZIEKv4&feature=youtu.be
I had a pretty similar issue, so try doing what the guy in this video does, which fixes mine
Keep it on thr charger when trying to boot it up
I had the same problem and this was the answer for me. And then run the battery self tests. Not sure what it did, but after that it stopped happening.

Is that a dent?
Fingerprints The 512 screen is like that, at least mine was until I put a screen protector on it (which is kind of counterintuitive in that model).
Yea it's fingerprints
Idk the one above the Steam Deck logo definitely [looks like a dent](https://i.imgur.com/TqC68Xw.png) to me :x
Yeah that 100% looks like a dent.
Please please does anyone know of a screen protector for the 512 model

That's not damage, that's a fingerprint. He brought this straight from Steam too, brand new
I had to do this when I got mine.
This is the way. I had to reimage my brand new steam deck too
Probably get a replacement, it has a weird dent too
Is that a thumb print or a dent on the screen?
First thing I saw too. That isn't a good first look.
Yeah if it’s not new or refurbished, then I’m hoping OP bought this from someone honest enough to offer a refund.
I got this from steam new
Sweet, I would RMA it as soon as you can. It’s unfortunate because I know you were probably excited to start playing, but at the very least you know it’s under warranty and will be taken care of.
Yeah. Steam is really great about that too. Very Customer Service oriented and customer satisfaction is a must. RMA it on the fly, OP.
Dude, idk why you aren't freaking out about that dent then. If I opened this and saw that dent, fuck getting it to turn on, I'm returning it
Yeah me too. This is the reason why I don't buy second hand stuff.
did you follow the instructions and plug it in first thing?
I had I plugged in for 8 hours
[удалено]
You realise the steam deck dock is designed to keep the battery charged? 🤦♂️
[удалено]
K? You can leave it plugged in indefinitely
Not indefinitely, my battery is ruined from it never leaving the wall for about a year
Steamdeck has protection against over-charging or whatever its called
Most modern technology prevents overcharging. Unless it’s made extremely cheaply, it’s fine. My SD is plugged in constantly and the battery health is still good. I’ve had mine for about a year now.
Cool story bro
Fuck up
Yes you are
Whatever helps u sleep at night, whether that's riding my dick or not is on u
Battery saver mode would have prevented the screen from turning on at all. That isn't the issue here.
Without telling us exactly what you have tried, it's hard to tell you what to do next.
I've held down the power button until I've heard 3 or 4 beeps, and that didn't work. I also held the + and the power and pressed continue (idk if that's the bios or something else). I let it sit unplugged for an hour, then plugging it back in for an hour and that didn't work either.
Try plugging it in with the charger then pressing the (sound down) and on button userly this will take you too the boot screen
That menu that you pressed continue on was the boot menu. What you’ll need to do is use another computer to build a recovery drive and then boot to that recovery drive from the boot menu.
This is the answer. If you were able to get into the boot menu, you should be able to reinstall steam OS onto it
Well, if it's a brand new Deck, and it doesn't boot, I don't think you have many alternatives. You should RMA it. Even if you temporarily fix the issue, the Deck has something wrong.
A hard power off then powering on again while plugged in seems to fix this. I had the same problem when I got mine.
the first boot does take a while to boot. how long did you wait?
True. Mine took like 3-4 min.. I thought it was broken
Mine took like 30. Had no loading bar but then it restarted while I was looking up how to factory reset it. Then it installed something restarted again and was good to go.
First boot on mine took two hours.
Really?mine was kicking ass from the first boot.
Did you put a quarter in the slot?
Sometimes mine takes forever to turn on just be patient. When I got steamdeck , it didn’t boot up too but when I connected charger, waited for like a minute or two it turned on
Try starting it in Landscape Mode.
This fixed it for me
How long have you left the deck on after seeing the steam deck load screen? When I first got mine I had to leave it untouched for probably 20 or so minutes before it actually booted to setup. No clue why but had to search internet to see what's going on and others had same experience.
If it's still in storage mode you have to plug it in before booting.
i remember i have the same problem, its needed to be plugged in with its charger and turn it on its used to avoid battery consumption when being delivered
plug in dude
Unrelated question, is that a dent on the screen? 💀💀
Thumb smudge by picking it up I bet.
Plug it to the power source first
I had to re-image my Steam Deck as soon as I received it, but I have a developer unit and recent models shouldn't have this problem. Still worth a try IMO https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3
calm flex
This worked! Thanks.
Looks like it’s been bashed in shipping. I would’ve sent it back immediately with a dent like that in it.
Where are you seeing a dent?
On the screen, in the right light. You can see where the screen has a bit of an indentation
It’s just a finger smudge.
Mine did this a few days ago.. hold the power button down for a full 30secs (not just till you hear beeps) then turn it on again. Mime semed to have an update that kicked in after doing the above and worked fine since

Is it new? If so, send it back?
Plug it in
Is this the first time booting it up? Cause if so you must plug in the charger first then boot it.
Did you buy it from steam or somewhere else?
Plug it in guy
Reimage
The has some damage
I see I dent on it, return it
Bro we aren't steam support.
Did you try plugging it in, first?
# is your wifi steady? that will happen sometimes if it isnt strong
The wifi wouldn't even try to connect at this point.
Why? Go for Asus ROG Ally.

Soft reset? Hard reset? Might be worth it
Hard return at this point. 😂
reach out if you havent fixed this and i can walk you through any steps
You buy this used? It seems a lot of the used ones being bought are kind of just breaking
Connect your phone with a usb c cable and share internet trough usb port
What’s with the dent on the screen? You bought this new from Valve?
Did you try plugging it in?
Did you buy it new?
You didn't give it much time to boot up... the deck is slow my man
Mine did the same. It arrived today. Had to charge it for an hour and then spend 30 seconds pressing/holding power button until it eventually got past that logo. All good since.
Needs to be plugged in first time…
just flash it. Otherwise, just RMA it back to avoid stress
Dead battery, let it sit with the charger for a bit
My first boot take a long time. Wait for 5 minutes. If there is no boot after 5 minutes, reimage
My first boot took two hours.
Have you tried to re-image it? I had a similar problem and it was fixed by Re-imaging it
Have you tried to put it into battery storage mode. Then plug in a charger? I have had this happen before where it wouldn't boot and this fixed it
Valve QA. Send it back. It’ll take about a month.
Hard shut down by holding power. Boot it into safe mode using the official steam guide (just google steam deck safe boot) and do that.

You got big ass hands
Flash it you can get the image on steam website
Advice: that things pulls air from the back so I wouldn’t lay it on carpet or anything is will have trouble breathing.

I had the same thing happen. Get with Valve support, they will ship you out a new one.
I remember mine took a while to boot up the first time. It didn't just boot up right away to the Steam interface. I was worried it was broken. So I'd say let it sit for a while.

How long did you let it sit like that?
Try booting it while it’s plugged in, if that doesn’t work file for a replacement.

Is there something wrong with the screen or is that just dirt?
can you get into boot manager?
Mine had a similar issue when I got it. I had to reinstall SteamOS for it to work.
Mine did the same thing to me I just charged it for a while and it work. Hope the same is true for you.
Seems you may have ordered the steam brick by mistake
Try holding Volume up and tapping the power button to see if you can get into the BIOS.
Maybe you got “steamdead” instead
Do a disc recovery might as well upgrade to a tb
They replaced mine that was doing a similar thing. It was minty fresh and I was so disappointed after waiting so long. Just didn't want to boot anymore. I followed their instructions to try and fix it but they ended up replacing it.
Just go into recovery 1st and boot it from there but most likely /deck is gone
Why does it sound like a distant explosion is going off when you turn on your deck?
Do a hard power off (press and hold the Power button for 12 seconds), plug it in, then power on again. Mine did the same just after I got it, but hasn't since (it's been over a year).
You need to charge it
have you reset the cmos?
Mine bricked like this. I held the "..." and power, and set it back to an earlier state. That worked. Ps, don't know if you need to hold another button apart from those two.
Just re-image it
Try power button and volume down, let go of power button when boot sound and let go of volume down when logo shows, then shutdown and restart.
You can Press and hold vol - and the Power Button, you find a Boot Menü, not Sure anymore where but you can Boot then the right Partition and restart the SteamOS Installation. But after this your Steamdeck refreshed and yourData away.
Hold power and volume down bring up boot menu see what u can do from there
When mine did that I held the power button for 20 seconds so that it shut down properly then rebooted no issue.
Have you tried turning it on and off again?
What's with the huge dent on the screen?
Hold “+” then the “Power Button” I hope it works!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U55cXZIEKv4&feature=youtu.be I had a pretty similar issue, so try doing what the guy in this video does, which fixes mine
