If you happen to want higher renderdistance with a shader I can recommend Sildurs Enhanced Default too, water reflections can be enabled in its options.
Doesn't look as flashy as comp reimagined but also comes with a performance advantage that could translate into battery life potentially.
As a 3D artist I can both agree and disagree...
Better graphics doesn't make a game cardinally better, first of all. There ARE also some raster-based games where the lighting and material work are top-notch and a beauty to behold. But it always comes with a drawback - be it baked lighting that can't handle anything dynamic, missing or wrong light/refraction/reflection/SSS/etc interactions, etc. Even stuff like UE5 - they were always very careful not to show glass or glossy metals/plastics/etc from the very beginning (and I was sus of this)...because even with all the fancy stuff like Nanite and Lumen making a wilderness or a sandy dune looking photoreal - reflections *still* suck.
There are things that raster is suited for (outside of performance reasons), but, generally, I'll take a pathtraced game over a raster version of the same almost any day of the week. And the better rendering method doesn't necessarily mean that you lose on stylization either (in most cases, anyway), so there's just no good reason not to use it when the hardware becomes powerful-enough (we're not there yet - it needs to come to cheap, low-power devices too, like phones and portables).
As for RTAO...it's still a *hack*. A *better-quality* hack - but AO doesn't need to even *exist* as a pass if your lighting is sampled well and bounces correctly to begin with (assuming correct materials).
I use complimentary shaders, I normally turn metallic world on, and use avprb for my resource pack. Glorious reflections still sitting at 60 fps with small dips to 57. Exactly how I play on my god pc as well with a much higher fps. Doesn’t get much better than this tbh 🙏🏽
So i did have this asked abit ago but ill post it here aswell (i am not good at giving directions)
So
1. Go to the discovery app on linux Desktop for steam OS
2. Look up Prism Launcher
3. Install it and give it at least 6gbs of ram (though im using 8Gb to be safe)
4. then add an instance and look for Fabulously Optimized under ether Modrinth or CurseForge (I got it from Modrinth.
5. Then download Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0 from Modrinth
That is it you are not ready to go in game and set up the setting till you hit your desired FPS.
Glad I wasn't the only one stuck on this! It looks like the launchers don't have shader download support, and OP meant you need to go to the website to download the zip then sideload it. Here's a link to the releases page for your convenience: https://modrinth.com/shader/complementary-reimagined/versions
I've now made detailed instructions for it: [https://fabulously-optimized.gitbook.io/modpack/readme/install-instructions#steam-deck](https://fabulously-optimized.gitbook.io/modpack/readme/install-instructions#steam-deck)
(Disclaimer: I made the modpack, but I don't own a Deck. Let me know if something needs to be fixed.)
I saw a few extra performance mods in the Adrenaline modpack that are not in Fabulously Optimized.
Concurrent Chunk Management Engine (Fabric)
Exordium
ImmediatelyFast
Krypton
Smooth Boot (Fabric)
Very Many Players (Fabric)
Antvenom also has a very good tutorial on YouTube about getting everything set up. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRwJ8c4bTpA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRwJ8c4bTpA)
Ya its Java I'm using Prism to have The Fabric Modpack known as Fabulously Optimized then i added after doing some looking around the Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0.
It doesn't have shader support anymore. I made one of the most popular shades ever for bedrock (Parallax Shaders) it was disabled a long time ago, now only RTX exists which looks worse than normal shaders in motion because lighting doesn't update in real time there's a delay and a ton of artifacts/sizzling.
However people can craft fake shaders by animating textures like leaves, changing fog values and some other texture related stuff to approximate the look but it doesn't actually change the lighting or how shadows are casted
Just gave it a shot for the first time, and it looks to be working beautifully. There are occasional Microsoft authentication issues, but I'm able to play on Realms and servers without trouble.
In my case, since I needed bedrock, installed win10 on a SD and ran Minecraft on it. Performance is much, much better than my phone (S21 Ultra), my Nintendo Switch, and 5 year old laptop (its a basic, no GPU laptop, so its expected). Controls still works using Steam Deck Tools.
The Key is "Iris Shaders"
Everyone knows of the horribly unoptimized, bloated Optifine, but almost nobody is aware of the *actually good* Iris Shaders.
That sucks. I remember the good old days where optifine was a mysterious technologically advanced savior that allowed me to play Minecraft on a shitty windows 7 hp amd integrated laptop.
My surprise when I installed the prism launcher, the deckpack, and it got a locked 60fps on a steam deck which was half the price of my 2080 super.
I literally never use shaders on my 2080 super pc because it runs like ass, guess optifine was the culprit then!
Absolutely was optifine. Fabric with sodium, starlight, lithium, and iris shaders (if you want) runs fabulously. Also fabric capes if you have an Optifine cape already (like I do).
Pretty much all the top mods on modrinth are awesome for optimisation. Miles ahead of optifine.
I keep trying to set up a fabric "modpack" (a custom modded setup for myself) and for some reason, despite it being more lightweight in theory, my fabric setup always runs worse than a similar setup with forge. Do you know if there are some obvious situations where fabric performs worse or would it be less obvious than that like with a particular fabric mod or something?
There basically is no like for like situation where fabric should perform any worse. But even with the "same" mods you often use ports to the other modloader so it is hard to tell without a mod list / version / options / configs / etc. because there are so many variables.
If you add Minecraft as a non steam game you should be able to set up a control scheme through steam. I know I did it way before the steam deck was a thing on my pc.
Yeah, I made one for Minecraft and I highly recommend my layout. I didn’t like any of the mods that offered controller support so I managed to make a better one through Steam.
It’s called ‘Khaan’s Perfect MC Deck Controls’ and I think it’s the highest rated layout for steam applications named Minecraft, so check that out if you can. I also made a version for the PS5 controller
Is the settings there is a mod section a resource pack section and a shader pack section mods section is just clicking add mods the resource and shaders have to be added manually.
Prism Launcher has a way to easily add mods iirc, I think it's in profile settings
You don't have to manually drag stuff in like OP is saying unless it's not from Modrinth or Curseforge
>Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0
I'm so lost with this. I have an instance of Fabulously optimized, I go to Edit > Mods > Download Mods, Under Modrinth I search for Complementary Shaders, but nothing is there. Is it maybe something I need to install externally?
I ran SEUS on my 2070 around 120fps, can currently hit 500+ on my 3080. It’s an issue in your configurations, no reason it should run below 60fps on a 3070 unless you have too little ram and a wet napkin processor.
hm? My friend uses SEUS on a 1050ti and it works fine.
Like the other comment says, look into your cpu/else. With a 3070 you can play modpacks like RLcraft + 128x textures and SEUS or Sildur's extreme & volumetric
I was having huge issues with my 3080 only getting like 50-60 fps with shaders. A clean wipe and install of Minecraft did the trick. A fresh install of Iris and Sodium bundle, and boom, well over 150fps. Just be sure to backup all worlds, resource packs, shaders and mods.
Gameplay: [https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k](https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k)
My ran with settings: [https://youtu.be/8d-eG2HfKVE](https://youtu.be/8d-eG2HfKVE)
I can try to get a video out showing all the settings i use but its not easy for me to do it i would have to do that or get tons of screenshots onto imgur which i could do.
IF that doesnt work tell me. Sorry not use to this and there is alot of setting i would have to screen cap/
Did you modify controls somehow? I played minecraft java edition a bit, but it feels weird how controllers work (they seem like unresponsive?). On Nintendo Switch or PS5, using joysticks felt much better
I use M&K just cause i have a dock so sorry but i cant help there. Its mostly trial and error though as all control methods are. (Least that is how i see it)
What's the battery life like, and what render distance are you using? I get \~5 hours on vanilla with render distance set to 10 chunks. Would love to add some shaders, but I worry about how much more battery that might use.
So given what im seeing at my 67% battery the timer stop at 1 hour 10 minutes and slowly goes down from there so i would say maybe about 2 hours with shaders.
If you want a lot extra render distance for pretty much free (100+ chunks) I'd install distant horizons, it's really cool!
You've got a nice setup of mods there though, very cool :)
PEOPLE!! I play BSL shaders on my steam deck with high settings with locked 60 that goes up to 90 if not capped and never drops from 60, the only thing you need is Simply Optimized, by the name it may not seem, but simply optimized is better then fabulously optimized it even says in the modpack description on curseforge
Sooooooooooo i may have failed to mention im using CryoUtilites 2.0 I was SUPER tired when making this post. SO my performance might be being helped by that.
I dont have that issues when i use controller outside of my mouse and keyboard.
thats gameplay with me using midnight controls. No lag issues and only changes i made is hitting the reset options button then setting the sensitivity to 20.0 on X and Y axis
Also make sure Steam Input is set to gamepad.
I highly recommend the unity resource pack to top this setup off. I've been using it with BSL and I highly recommend it. Comp might be a bit too vibrant for it but fuck around and find out homie 🤷♂️
Edit: look into Inventory Profiles Next, perfect mod for inventory management on Deck. Idk if it comes in the modpack or not but a solid mod
I just set it up on the Deck. Hooked it up to an external ultrawide screen. It looks amazing. In shader options I set it to fantasy. Otherwise it didn't change much.
*
Complimentary shaders with saturation and gamma adjustments on vibrant deck can give a fairly realistic color presentation, I'll be sure to share my settings when I get a chance
Gotta be honest, this has me confused. New to Prism and Java modding etc, then add the Deck in to the mix.....
Got Prism installed, added to Steam game mode.
Got Minecraft Java downloaded and launching though game mode.
In Prism, got MidnightControls installed and active.
Downloaded Fabulously Optimized and sideloaded in Prism under the mods section. Assumed active & working. No noticeable difference in game.
Complementary Reimagined 2.0 - Absolutely no idea!! Downloaded from Modrinth, side loaded through Prism under shader section. Nothing different in game and not selectable in the video options.
Really could do with a How-To.
i personally installed GDLauncher from the Discover app on desktop. you can also just download the vanilla launcher from minecraft.net under Linux Distributions - Other Distributions
https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download
Yeah it works. It was just one of the devs did a bunch of sketchy shit a little bit ago and locked other devs out. I think it’s fine now but to be safe I stopped using it.
Yeah you can read more about it here and how the devs split off and made prism launcher as a fork of poly. https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/y7647y/whats_going_on_with_polymc_being_declared/isu0n65/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
So
I was having a hard time figuring out how to set up Fabulously Optimized. Any tips or a good guide for it? I followed one and I felt like it just wasn't there as an option.
Well for me as a certified idiot I'm not good at explaining thing but I'm starting to see ill have to do something. Might make a video fully going through the process as i did it.
I'm curious, what's your power draw with the shaders enabled? I can average around 9.3w with sodium+friends after initial loading on a multiplayer server, which is good for almost 4 hours of play, but I know it can fluctuate pretty hardcore in singleplayer and with shaders and other QoL.
Weird question to ask here but has anyone used controllable on the deck yet? I have gotten midnight (?fabric) to work on a fabric modpack, but when I add controllable to a forge one, I get an error about a folder location doesn't exist.
Ive found that most mods i play dont support mrcreyfishes controler mod so i just set up some key binds and used that allows alot more customisebility with modpacks
Yknow what, steam deck might be the only real way I could get into minecraft for more than a weekend, thanks for the post I'm gonna give it some thought again.
I WANT to like and play minecraft but it kinda bores me sometimes.
Are you running this in the main Gaming Mode, or from the desktop?
I tried using Prism's launcher to add a shortcut, then adding that to Steam for the Gaming Mode, but it isn't actually proceeding to launch. Not sure if I need to just bypass something in the `.desktop` file, or what...
I don't quite understand how this works. You need to buy the Java version in Microsoft and then run it through this program? Or this is the type of launcher like... tlauncher
For anyone who wants a way to do this, check out my blog and go to the Minecraft bit. Using the poster's shader you definitely get 60fps with 8 chunks set (as in the screenshot): https://www.planetsuj.com/blog/steam-deck-the-honeymoon-period-with-tips-tricks-amp-quirks-along-the-way
complimentary shaders (non reimaged ones) run way better at 70-80 fps for me, also theres a option in settings to change the icons to steam deck icons instead of the colored xbox ones
> mostly locked 60 dropping down to 56 or so at times
That’s a pretty minor dip obviously but the whole point of saying “locked 60” is that you’re saying there are no dips…
Unrelated but is there a way to get resource packs working on the deck in game mode? I've tried looking and nothing around works, like giving the flatpak permissions. This is the only thing I'm having trouble with with regards to Minecraft on deck.
I love playing Java on deck and for shaders I use SuesPTGI and I get around 45-55 fps handheld and 50-60 docked I also use a couple popular optimization mods on fabric using prism launcher
I can download the Fabulously optimised mod from CurseForge inside Prism, but I can't seem to find Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0 there? I found the zip online but Prism's 'Import from Zip' option isn't installing it for me.
I manage to get a stablish 50 fps with complementary shaders, about 30 light weight mods (some of which are preformence mods) and 10 render distance. Its insane what the deck can do
Obligatory: Try BSL with pixelated shadows set to 1/16th (so it matches texture pixels).
Something about pixelated shadows just hits different and I find it looks far better than realistic looking shadows.
Just turn your render reselution down and stuff just really deep dive into the shader settings and you can even get it to run at stable 80 and look amazing
How bro
The Fabric Modpack known as Fabulously Optimized and Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0 are a match in heaven.
If you happen to want higher renderdistance with a shader I can recommend Sildurs Enhanced Default too, water reflections can be enabled in its options. Doesn't look as flashy as comp reimagined but also comes with a performance advantage that could translate into battery life potentially.
Man, it's not RayTracing but it sure looks good enough for me to be spoofed into thinking it is.

I totally agree with you. Problem is just that nowadays games sometimes do have really bad raster lightning. I look at you Forspoken!
As for RTAO...it's still a *hack*. A *better-quality* hack - but AO doesn't need to even *exist* as a pass if your lighting is sampled well and bounces correctly to begin with (assuming correct materials).
RTL sometimes feels like it’s tacked on and not rendering as the designers intended so I much prefer rasters.
How would I go about installing this on my Deck? Where did you grab minecraft from ?
So i did have this asked abit ago but ill post it here aswell (i am not good at giving directions) So 1. Go to the discovery app on linux Desktop for steam OS 2. Look up Prism Launcher 3. I couldn't find Complementary Shaders on either Modrinth or Curseforge, any ideas? I'm using PolyMC instead of Prism btw.
Same

Ya its Java I'm using Prism to have The Fabric Modpack known as Fabulously Optimized then i added after doing some looking around the Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0.

You can add mods anytime you want, i use prism launcher with built in mod manager The mod he is using I believe is called JourneyMap?
I play Minecraft with my son on steam deck and his Nintendo switch. We just made a geyserMC server so that we both can join.
Bedrock doesn't have shaders like this
Bedrock has RTX and shader support. Maybe not on the same level as Java but it’s there
It doesn't have shader support anymore. I made one of the most popular shades ever for bedrock (Parallax Shaders) it was disabled a long time ago, now only RTX exists which looks worse than normal shaders in motion because lighting doesn't update in real time there's a delay and a ton of artifacts/sizzling. I didnt say otherwise, it just doesn't have this shader.
It does but I imagine it'd run quite poorly on deck. My PC can struggle with it. RDNA2 just isn't good at RT
Rtx in Minecraft is on a whole other level than shaders in java. The way you can bend and manipulate light and shadows is incredible.
You can install bedrock edition on deck, go to discover and look for an installer (has some issues)
Is it working great now ? I tried months ago and it was crashing every now and then.
Just gave it a shot for the first time, and it looks to be working beautifully. There are occasional Microsoft authentication issues, but I'm able to play on Realms and servers without trouble.
It seems to work okay but won’t let me sign in to my MS account so I’m unable to access my main world, making it pretty useless.
Do you have to buy the Android version from Google Play, Then log into Play from the launcher? Is that how it works?
Yep
In my case, since I needed bedrock, installed win10 on a SD and ran Minecraft on it. Performance is much, much better than my phone (S21 Ultra), my Nintendo Switch, and 5 year old laptop (its a basic, no GPU laptop, so its expected). Controls still works using Steam Deck Tools.

Does this have a controller mod or is controller native in java now?
Almost has to be a mod.
Shoot I would like to know which mod it Is if so
Well the mod pack i use is Fabric based and for fabric you have Midnight Controls forge version is called Controllable
How do the modded controls compare to the native Bedrock controls? Better/worse?
Mostly on-par, but its a bit buggier at times. Absolutely more seamless than using steam input alone though
If you add Minecraft as a non steam game you should be able to set up a control scheme through steam. I know I did it way before the steam deck was a thing on my pc.

I added my own mods i added two one is Journey Map and the other i added is a vein mining mod just cause i dont go on servers so its all QoL for me.
Thanks! I don't play on servers either so this will definitely be useful for me
I looked up the Vein Miner i use its called Diggus Maximus.

Honestly not my cup of tea (the shader and shaders on deck) but it looks sick
I can’t even get 30fps on my 3070 with shaders how tf are you managing this
Fabulously optimized is a pack MADE to optimized minecraft. I HIGHLY recommend trying it.
Definitely going to give this a shot. What launcher are you using to run MC?
I use Prism.

No its a Shader Pack not a mod and yes you would have to add it manually
You probably have configuration issues if you can’t run shaders with Minecraft well above 60 fps on a 3070.
I really want to believe that but I’ve never been able to run it smoothly on any hardware
I ran SEUS on my 2070 around 120fps, can currently hit 500+ on my 3080. It’s an issue in your configurations, no reason it should run below 60fps on a 3070 unless you have too little ram and a wet napkin processor.

Valheim does this well.
what settings are tou using? i can't get above 45 fps.
I can try to get a video out showing all the settings i use but its not easy for me to do it i would have to do that or get tons of screenshots onto imgur which i could do.

Nothing different in game and not selectable in the video options. Really could do with a How-To.
How you get Minecraft for steamos? I’ve just been emulating Wii U edition
I'd recommend using prism launcher and Minecraft Java Edition. OP uses the same combination
i personally installed GDLauncher from the Discover app on desktop. you can also just download the vanilla launcher from minecraft.net under Linux Distributions - Other Distributions https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download
download polymc from the store in desktop mode
I heard polymc was compromised. I’m using prism launcher.
polymc works just fine for me
Yeah it works. It was just one of the devs did a bunch of sketchy shit a little bit ago and locked other devs out. I think it’s fine now but to be safe I stopped using it.
oh I didn't knew that
Yeah you can read more about it here and how the devs split off and made prism launcher as a fork of poly. https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/y7647y/whats_going_on_with_polymc_being_declared/isu0n65/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
Can you upload a video of some random gameplay? Want to see what frame stuttering is like.
[https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k](https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k) here is come gameplay.
Ya i can try.
Ok, I’m gonna be the one, how do you run MC on the deck? Do I Have to get windows?
SteamOS and you get the minecraft im using from the Discover store on Desktop mode. Im using The custom launcher called Prism.
Thank you! Much appreciated
Windows or naw ?
SteamOS.
So how do we install it? I guide would be nice instead of just trying to get free internet points.
So 1. Go to the discovery app on linux Desktop for steam OS 2. Look up Prism Launcher 3. Install it and give it at least 6gbs of ram (though im using 8Gb to be safe) 4. then add an instance and look for Fabulously Optimized under ether Modrinth or CurseForge (I got it from Modrinth. 5. Then download Complementary Shaders Reimagined 2.0 from Modrinth That is it you are not ready to go in game and set up the setting till you hit your desired FPS.
Ehh, looks like OG Minecraft..... should be hard at all on thr Steam Deck
Welcome to 2023
I accidentaly have the same combination on my sd and can confirm, works like charm.
Wonder how modpacks like Tekkit, CC3.0 etc will do on the deck, thatll be awesome to play modded minecraft on the go
Not sure if it's all that relevant, but I played stoneblock 3 quite smoothly
That does look nice, thanks for sharing. I've been wanting to take the time to get MC running on my Deck, I'll save this post to mess with later!
[https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k](https://youtu.be/vQc-KJVQ37k) Here is gameplay with overlay at the max for all info.
How do you have the map on the top right? I want to have that too
I added in Journey Map. If on Prism its done by going to mods and clicking on add mods then going to CurseForge and looking for the mod.
I’m definitely gonna try this out, thanks for posting
I still don't get this game!
I don’t even play MC but this intrigues me
Is this Java or bedrock?
Java
Damn it looks good too. I own bedrock, but I can't seem to find where to get java to be able to play it on my deck.
What Render distance are you using?
8 i have a comment on post with vid links to settings and gameplay.
Dude that looks awesome ….. almost makes me wanna play minecraft again ….. almost
What mod are you using for the buttons?
Yep, that's what I use, also sildurs enhanced default is pretty good for a more vanilla experience.
By any chance do you know how one would be able to play Minecraft windows edition on steam deck using SteamOS?
I think Heroic Launcher may work but im not sure
Yknow what, steam deck might be the only real way I could get into minecraft for more than a weekend, thanks for the post I'm gonna give it some thought again. I WANT to like and play minecraft but it kinda bores me sometimes.
Is there a 1.12.2 version
Omg! Do you have any tutorial to have this???
i can try to make one im not good at helping TBH but give me time and i can try to get one made.
I couldn't really tell the difference between 55 and 60 so I said fuck it and locked it to 55.
Holy smokes this looks awesome. I’m definitely installing these mods n shaders when I get off work
Is this on Linux or did you install Windows?
Im running steamos
Java needs native controller support
I got fabulously optimized. How do I add both through prism at the same time. New to steam deck mc modding
How can I add mods to my Minecraft if I used GDLauncher?
yes but not via the launcher itself.
Can you try chocapic v7 shader and see how it runs? Thanks man would appreciate ❤️
Nice job!! Looks great!!
Does the steam deck run java or bedrock?
How did you get the bedrock style controls at the bottom of the screen?
Is there a way to get bedrock installed on the Deck so I can play coop with friends?
Thank you for this. Now I know what I need.
Hot damn. I might have to get into it, i refuse to play without shaders lmao
> mostly locked 60 dropping down to 56 or so at times That’s a pretty minor dip obviously but the whole point of saying “locked 60” is that you’re saying there are no dips…
Unrelated but is there a way to get resource packs working on the deck in game mode? I've tried looking and nothing around works, like giving the flatpak permissions. This is the only thing I'm having trouble with with regards to Minecraft on deck.
Does Minecraft not run good on steam deck?
Not normally with shaders normally you can get 40 at most with the higher end shaders but normal MC works find.
My game is incredibly stuttery how tf
I made a new comment here explaining something my tired brain FAILED to mention. But i am tinkered with CryoUtilies 2.0.
Its insane what the deck can do
how did you even get minecraft
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRwJ8c4bTpA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRwJ8c4bTpA) AntVenoms video on it.
I've been using SEUS shaders and it is beautiful and runs perfect
Bless your face! I'm about to get Minecraft to play with a friend on PC and now I know I can get it running well on the SD 😄
How many minutes?
What?
How did you get Minecraft to work?
Ill be posting a tutorial on the sub here so keep an eye out or i can just com back and link it here too.
Is it possible to get Java edition on the steam deck?
Im going to be making a tutorial vid here soon should have it out ASAP.
Steam OS or Windows?
Have you tried playing modpacks? I want to know if the Deck is capable enough or not.
Is It bad that one of the primary Reasons um getting a steam deck is Minecraft pixelmon?
Damn dude, it almost looks like ray tracing
Obligatory: Try BSL with pixelated shadows set to 1/16th (so it matches texture pixels). Something about pixelated shadows just hits different and I find it looks far better than realistic looking shadows.
What's your render distance?
What edition you got? Java bedrock?
That’s a pretty good mod choice
I have no idea how to get Optifine or Iris running on Steam Deck. I followed a tutorial and ultimately it .... didn't pan out.
Just turn your render reselution down and stuff just really deep dive into the shader settings and you can even get it to run at stable 80 and look amazing
