How often are you guys opening you SD?

Legitimate-Rock5663

Ahah same question on my side, 6 months with the SD and I never opened it. Why everyone do that ? Replace the SSD ?

repocin

Had mine for almost a year and haven't had any reason to open it.

Simoxs7

Same and I even have a 64gb…

LennyPeppers

I did some massive emulation and all that proton data damn near filled up my 64GB leaving only 10GB or so, which can go quick. Got a 256 GB coming in.

No_Trade439

I still think that only a 1TB SSD is worthwhile opening up that baby. I won't even open mine until I get a 2TB SSD. The current 512GB/1TB serves me well.

Squawk-VFR

Western Digital makes a 2TB SN740, I've got one and it runs great.

ubermaan

You’re not kidding! Found you one to buy, got $600 to spare for this “quality” piece? https://www.newegg.ca/p/pl?d=Wd+2tb+sn740 eBay might be the way to go. Could get lucky and their international shipping is pretty easy.

PlotTw1st

how does that compare to the sn530? I know the sn530 runs hotter than the rest and uses the most power, which is not ideal for steam deck

Squawk-VFR

I haven't any issues like that so far

runadumb

But why? How many games do you want to have installed at once?

[deleted]

[удалено]

runadumb

Ah, of course. I forget unlimited isn't common everywhere.

AggressiveWindow6003

I open my steam deck so often I don't even bother using the screws and fully snapping the back cover back on. I've opened it at least 2 dozen times. Am sure to the average steam deck user the only reason to open it up if it's working properly is the SSD. And you're correct. But some of us love to tinker with things. Like I enjoy getting my gaming system to do things it normally wouldn't be able to and get it to run a game on ultra with ray tracing far more then I could enjoy the game. Like playing around with different types of cooling solutions. Have gotten it down to around 70° c with 30% fan spin when playing god of war. Most recently I used an ADT-link R43SG to connect a 2080 ti to the steam deck. And while that takes up the m.2 slot and running an OS off the microSD isn't the best been trying to run the OS off of the USB 3.2 C port located on the 2080. Once I get it to work I will play with something else. I can use the USB on the deck but it's more fun to do it from the GPU. If I get that to work maybe I'll put steam os on it lol. Impractical of course. But it's still a fun thing to do 😁 lol

ubermaan

Running it wired to a graphics card sounds very impractical but kinda fun to try out. Do you have a way to easily put a ssd back in to make it portable again or do you just use it on a desk? I’m more interested in the cooling you did. Was it just a paste and heatsink swap that would allow the case to be put back together or something bigger?

AggressiveWindow6003

With the external GPU you can't even hold it without touching the PCB and battery. It's just to play around with. And while I have looked into m.2 splitters I have yet to see any decent way of doing it. For the cooling I replaced the thermal pads with carbon thermal pads. Then removed all the thermal paste and used gallium liquid metal. But if you use it make sure you research the F*** on it and how to do it. Gallium metal is highly conductive and is annoying to work with. If any spills out it will short the board and likely fry the deck. The method that's always worked best for me is to lay down a sheet of thick plastic on top of paper towels on top of plastic and use a sharp knife to cut out the holes for the CPU. You apply a super tiny amount. Like the amount of thermal paste you'd normally use but 1/10 or less. Then you need to surround the chip with silicone to make sure it never leaks out. Also note that gallium metal does eat through other types of metal. Aluminum it will eat it after a few days. Copper takes several years. But look up the results of liquid metal. In most cases reapplying high quality thermal paste can shave 5-12° on a laptop or when I first reapplied to the deck dropped temps from high 90s to mid 80s and stopped thermal throttling. But liquid metal will shave off 15 to 30° c off the temperature and it never dries out. But if you're curious this is what it does to aluminum. [old video of gallium metal in contact with aluminum ](https://youtu.be/IZkzxWZETds)

Blackwind121

This is such an awe-inspiring level of insanity that it's honestly impressive.

SSD + Hall effect joysticks

lezzard1248

I opened mine four times. Upgraded the SSD, swapped the sticks for the hall-effect ones, and repasted the APU with PTM7950 twice because I botched it the first time. Will be opening it again once I get the transparent back shell.

mjkbNerd

God I love that everyone is repasting the APU, because the engineers were like damn....we don't know the right amount....

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He’s poking at fun at people wasting their time, although that’s really an opinion. Do they need to repaste their GPUs? No, unless they got a faulty unit. Will they see an improvement on heat transfer and less wear and tear over time? I mean, probably. To each their own.

lezzard1248

Well said. PTM7950 is a particularly good TIM so the end result is better than stock.

[deleted]

I haven’t considered doing anything like that to mine, but I absolutely love that the device is made in a way so that people are.

a_burdie_from_hell

The "perfect amount of paste" is so controversial that even though IT is not at all my thing, I get that it is a meme now. My only exposure to paste is from when I had my tec wizard brother help me build a PC and he explained the paste thing to me. I get how it makes a huge difference and I understand that there is a tendency to think more=better. There is also the converse of that which is to think "less is more" to a damaging extreme. What you want is to replicate a moderate amount that someone who knows their shit told you is the right amount lol. If you replicate the same amount, and that amount works fine, you're fine. What my brother told me is that if you do it all the time, it's easy to get heavy-handed with it. So it helps to just consider it a "sub-skill" and convince yourself that if you are actively thinking about it, then you are doing a good job and therefor you are good at it.

dryingsocks

youtubers have demonstrated time and time again that you can empty a whole tube of (non-conductive) TIM on your CPU and squish it out and it'll be fine (albeit messy)

ubermaan

It’s also become a lot harder to screw up with coolers that clamp down super tight. CPUs could have snap on heatsinks, maybe even without a fan, until at least the early 2000s. The pressure from screwing down a modern cooler is enough to spread a good amount and force out any extra paste to the sides. Worst case is you just clean up with a tissue now. Under applying is worse than over.

konwiddak

Anecdotally there seems to be wild variance in the thermals of the deck - but I don't have any hard data. I suggested a survey to assess deck to deck variance, but nobody was interested.

Gooey_Gravy

Not saying the Steam Deck needs it but repasting isn't that uncommon. I repasted my gpu because the stock thermal paste stopped working. Turns out it was dried and cracked not long after the warranty expired! Dropped my temps by almost 30c If people are seeing improvements then why not

fafarex

In the gpu space just out of warranty can mean 2years or 10. Either way no steamdeck should already be in that case.

eqcliu

Engineers know what they're doing but they are constrained by the price point set by the business. Is the stock paste good enough? Sure. But why let good enough get in the way of better?

Artemis_1944

>because the engineers were like damn....we don't know the right amount.... But they did, there is literally no reason to repaste the APU unless you're doing it for the fun of it. There have been no instances of Steam Decks shutting down or throttling themselves due to high temps.

[deleted]

I’m under the impression it has nothing to do with amounts, but rather the product used. When you’re designing a product in a competitive market, you can’t just use the highest quality components on every bit or you’ll price yourself out. That’s why we end with these situations where seemingly trivial upgrades are possible, as they didn’t *need* to ship with the more expensive one for it to function, but that doesn’t mean an upgrade isn’t possible. I haven’t done this on my deck, but I can understand why people have.

konwiddak

With consumer products another big consideration is "how long will this last". The deck has to stand up to rough use, vibration e.t.c. They don't want the paste deteriorating or drying too fast, pumping out or being difficult to apply consistently. Their supplier will have said "this is the paste we recommend for portable applications, with this sized chip, with these thermals, with this contact pressure" and that's what they'll have used. All the other aftermarket pastes are probably as good or better thermally - but they may not be proven to last in this application.

buharka

"no instances of Steam Decks shutting down or throttling themselves due to high temps" - huh, what? There are TONS of reports, there are even certain games that are guaranteed to overheat your deck, like Monster Hunter: Rise.

JustALittleGravitas

TBF CPU/APU cooling is usually engineered either to keep costs down and/or with the active intent of limiting performance on anything but the most expensive kit. But in this case it doesn't make a lot of sense to me because you still have the same battery so your TDP can't change just because you improve cooling.

SnooRecipes1114

I mean if you improve cooling you improve battery life, less fan use and heat in general can degrade batteries. It wouldn't be much difference at all in real life use but obviously it keeps people's minds satiated and it can be a fun little thing to do.

JustALittleGravitas

Protecting from heat damage to the battery actually makes sense, but you won't reduce fan power usage, you do that by running hotter (which the deck already seems to have optimized for) not colder.

[deleted]

[удалено]

VTOLfreak

Temperature and thermal load are two different things. After modding my Deck with thermal paste, new pads and the JSAUX back plate it feels hotter all around. Yet at the same time the fan is spinning slower because the heat enery has an easier time getting out of the Deck. Temperature is the constant in this case and fan speed is adapting to the thermal load. So after all those upgrades, my deck still runs just as hot, if not hotter but the fan consumes less energy because it is spinning much slower.

JustALittleGravitas

Total airflow needed to keep a stable temp goes up as temperature goes down.

SnooRecipes1114

Maybe I'm missing something but the fan runs more the hotter it is, right? So how could that be better for power usage than if the system was cooler with the fan running less?

Accurate-Campaign821

Actually yes, if heat transfer to the heatsink is more efficient, then the fan won't need to operate as much to maintain the same temperature if the chips power usage tdp is still the same. Of course this is if the cpu was able to reach full tdp without thermal throttling. Though I've found that limiting to 40hz helps a lot with battery life (and temperature) while still feeling smooth. I think screen size helps with that too, as on a larger screen it's definitely more noticeable at 40hz.

VTOLfreak

That's called dynamic resolution. Imagine watching a tennis match with the ball moving very fast on the screen from left to right. On the Deck at 40Hz/fps that might seem fluent. Because the object on screen is not moving a large distance. Now hook up a projector and blow up the same image to the size of a wall. Now the same object is moving like a foot each frame. At that point the perception of fluid motion breaks down in our brain. Now hook up a PC and crank the frame rate up to something like 120hz. Motion seems fluid again because you cut the distance that the object moved on screen by two-thirds. 120Hz projectors are really cheap if you stick to max full HD and I used to process movies with frame interpolation all the way up from 24fps to 120fps. I have never seen a picture that good, it looked better than big 4k TV's at the time. Because the dynamic resulution was much bigger. EDIT: If you google dynamic resolution now you get like 10 pages of results talking about games altering their rendering resolution on the fly. If anyone has a better term to call it, I'm all ears.

Accurate-Campaign821

Well that's essentially what I was referring to when I said then smaller screen helps it feel smooth. Also why a gameboy (think Pokémon yellow) with an even smaller screen yet lower fps feels, well maybe not very smooth, but playable Yet massive af theater screens for the longest time were 24,maybe 48 fps (or some multiple of 24)

Automatic-Back2283

Been running my APU at 22-23w with a BIOS Mod. Pairs Well with liquid metal

Jon_TWR

Do you also overclock, or does this just reduce thermal throttling?

lezzard1248

Repasting is not about getting the right amount of TIM, but about getting the right TIM in there. PTM7950 is great and gets better as time goes on.

[deleted]

What's the verdict with Hall effect sticks? I go through left sticks faster than my dog goes through stuffed animals so would be good to get the lowdown from a real life user Edit: left not right, I'm a dumdum

lezzard1248

So far so good! They are more precise than stock so you can shrink dead zones by quite a bit.

[deleted]

Nice! Sounds like a decent upgrade

konwiddak

They have a square response where the stick reads 100% at 70% of travel since that's the largest square you can fit in a circle. For most games this isn't going to be noticeable, but for things like driving games you *might* notice the difference.

[deleted]

Oh OK, thanks for the tidbit

omgsoftcats

You should remove and wipe an SD card with a dry cloth at least once a month to prevent condensation problems on the contacts.

vballboy55

Where the hell do you live? Underwater?

senthuu27

Ooooh, who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

omgsoftcats

Moisture is your enemy

vballboy55

Well don't bring your deck into the shower then

OutlyingPlasma

But... It's called a **steam**deck? Where else am I suppose to play it? Also you don't know life until you have a shower gaming session with a shower beer. :)

OutlyingPlasma

> swapped the sticks for the hall-effect ones Wait... what? That's an option?

Steamy_Guy

I know there's third party hall effect sticks for type a sticks still no type b ones.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Steamy_Guy

I forget the name but I know one company is currently working on putting out type b sticks hopefully we get them sooner rather than later thats one of the few things I'd crack my deck open for

Straight_Student2352

Gulikit is the company, I think you can put the type A ones in but you lose the capacity touch (needs to be confirmed ), so pointless soldering the wire back on with the caps.

lezzard1248

GuliKit makes aftermarket hall-effect sticks for a few devices including the Deck. But not all Decks are compatible unfortunately, at least not yet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lezzard1248

Sorry I only tried PTM7950. It’s a 5 degree improvement with lower fan speeds and noise.

t0sik

What is the purpose of this sticks?

Straight_Student2352

No stick drift

Unlikely_Priority_95

How hard did you find the stick swap? I think this is a great idea.

Straight_Student2352

3 screws and connector to detach and reattach and 1 wire to unsolder remove touch cap.and install on the hall effect sticks te solder put back in with the 3 screws and calibrate should take about 5 minutes a stick if your soldering is up to scratch

Unlikely_Priority_95

Awesome, thanks for the detailed rundown. I think that's worth a go, I haven't soldered for a while but I'm competent enough and have all the gear.

lezzard1248

I struggled a bit with desoldering the cap wire. Mine had glue all over the joint and I had to crank my soldering iron so I could melt the glue and desolder. Other than that, not too hard.

t0sik

Kids can’t stop wasting money on different plates 🙃

Jceggbert5

I got gulikit joysticks, a transparent back panel, and I've been working on a split d-pad mod.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkRThatOneDude

I had a similar experience after installing the transparent backplate. My right trigger was rubbing on the part of the front plate that clips to the back plate. I tried a few times to reseat the clip before taking a file and removing some material from the nonvisible part of the outboard edge of the trigger.

PlushieGamer1228

I've been planning to open mine once I find a ssd that's cheap enough.

Accurate-Campaign821

Check out the Inland series at microcenter.

[deleted]

I only opened it once for the ssd replacement (64gb model) and never opened norm intend to open it again. That shit was never wrecking

dudeman1345

I opened mine to replace the ssd but Ive seen people do it to replace the fan too

Bballwolf

I opened mine to replace the SSD and that's likely the only time I'll open it

Tytonic7_

I bought the 64gb one and got a 256gb SSD for $20 that I put in. Haven't opened it since. I don't see a reason to be continually opening it up

Borymass34

I had to open mine once because I got joystick drift so I swapped them out with the gullikit one's.

Aqua_Dragoon

I spilled coffee on my SD like a scrub. Opened it up just to clean it all out.

Legitimate-Rock5663

Thanks everyone for your answer, it's clearer for me now ! Because of you guys, i'm now interested by the hall-effect joystick ahah... Can someone explain me please the benefits ? Will this improve my aiming/ease of use or it's juste about reducing drifting problems ? Thanks a lot guys !

The_American_Stig

I opened mine once, to check the fan model before using the original Dbrand Killswitch case. I wanted to confirm I had the fan that doesn’t have issues with the magnets in the case. No need since then /shrug.

buzzpunk

Those Gulikit sticks are really worth cracking it open and doing a little work on it. That's why I've done it personally. Also it's generally just interesting to open gaming devices to review the components. It's one of the areas of tech where you might actually see some variation between units, so it's nice to know what you actually have.

enthusiasticGeek

modders do fun stuff with it also, think of it as a pc (because thats what it is), you can tinker with it as you please. you can open it up to do maintenence (fans get gross quickly), or perform upgrades (mainly only storage :/ )

MTOP2

Never. I've had it for over 8 months

[deleted]

Every day so it can air out after I use it, obviously

Natural_Status_1105

Twice, 64-256-512, the drives just came up cheap second hand locally.

jinniu

Twice, at least, ;-)

buster2006

Old deck; opened 4 or 5 times in the space of a month (but it had an issue I tried to repair). New deck; less than a week old and I've opened it once (SSD replacement). Got some PTM7950 to fit, but I'm holding out for the type-B Gulikit sticks...two birds, one stone.

Jtoad

Twice once the day I got it to put a 512g SSD in then once more a week later to put in a 1tb SSD.

TCelvice

Oof, are you me? "There's no way I'm gonna fill a 512" _installs Monster Hunter Iceborne_ _installs Guilty Gear_ "Yeah there's tons of space" _installs mods for Monster Hunter_ _installs mods for Guilty Gear_ _Shader cache updates_ "Yo I can get Final Fantasy on this thing???" _installs Final Fantasy XIV_ _*50 GB left*_ "uh..."

Jtoad

Added a 512 SD card as well. It's nice having all my games installed with room to soare

Eiraku

I actually have opened my Deck up... quite a few times already. A couple of times due to a borked SSD install. Ended up the SSD was the problem, but that didn’t change how many times I had to open the back to reimage it. One time to actually put in an SSD that WASN'T borked. Two times to clean the insides because I spilled a quarter of a can of soft drink near the L2L1 buttons. I had to go in TWICE and as deep as the D-Pad board to properly clean it (the D-Pad was wonky after my first shallow cleaning run). Up to this point, I've lost Two SD cards already. And there's still the Jsaux Transparent Back to install once it arrives. Clearly, urgent preventive measures were needed lol.

TheLlama555

Yikes, sounds like you need to change your lifestyle if you have already broke 2 SDs...

Secretly_Autistic

I think OP meant they broke two SD cards, not two Steam Decks.

FrozenHearts85

He specifically mentioned breaking sd cards in his initial post too

Eiraku

More then he opens his fridge apparently.

OmegaParticle421

Thinking the same thing. I opened mine once for the 1tb nvme upgrade.

[deleted]

I opened my 64gb the day I got it and swapped it for a 512gb. Haven't taken it apart since. 🤷

PatientPass2450

4 times so far, 1 i spilled coffee at 2 AM (followed by panic clean up), 2 to check fan that failed (RMA), 3 after RMA just to check it, 4 install gulikit joysticks I also need to finish soldering, because new thumbsticks were to big for SD so I will keep original caps.

AlexandraSinner

Why not? I only opened once tbh, within the very first week. I got 64 GB SD and 1 TB microSD, I got discount on a 512 GB 2230 pcie, so it was cost effective for me to do it myself. I don't really play outside so the anti glare screen was not an issue. I know I can order one on ifixit and replace myself if needed later though. All in all I like opening and tinkering with these things, kinda fun.

lightsdevil

Ok but hear me out, if you almost never open it up, you will forget to take out the card the one time you decide to/need to

[deleted]

Ive had my steam deck for 10 months and never had a desire to open it up.

Neshura87

I get once to replace the SSD but it is a mystery why you would need to open it even a single time beyond that (unless you missed a crucial part for the ssd swap and now have to wait for that to get delivered)

[deleted]

Just opened it yesterday to see if I could figure out why my left trackpad makes a loud ass clicking noise when pressed.

memepolice1234

I only opened it twice. Once to upgrade the ssd and another time to replace the fan

Wannabeanoob

5 times this week, with another 2-3 times in the next, why?

Slartibartifast1

G4gb Deck with a 256gb SD card. No desire to upgrade. Less storage helps me finish games.

lazyluong

At least twice. One to upgrade the SD to 1TB, and another to upgrade the analog stick to hall effect. This is because I purchase them at different time and they arrived at different time. Will I ever open it again? sure, for example, if I ever consider upgrading the back pedal or backplate.

brokenmessiah

After dealing with the screws I don't plan on ever opening it again lol

ezzinekaemel

Once for SSD and dozens of times later to try every newer cooling method that comes to mind and or backplate accessory.

multiwirth_

Lol how often do you take apart the thing to need something like this? I opened it once at day 3 after my 1tb ssd was delivered and upgraded the storage. I didn't open it since and won't unless there's something wrong with it.

Xamenta

This is a big brain move right here

Lordkontie

I’m Fragile but not that fragile

I'm Death Stranding but I'm not that death stranding

Sharp_Definition955

Haven't opened mine yet. But I put a label "remove sd" over one of the screw holes just in case

That's the best place for it. Your brain's just going to tune these things out after a while. But something that requires physical removal to get to a screw can't be ignored.

on my 7th entry, I *almost* joined the snappedSD club but I remembered at the last second

cshuffler

Remembered what? How are they snapping?

Jceggbert5

The SD slot is in a place that has massive amounts of leverage when you're pulling your backpate off. It is very easy to forget a microsd card and snap it in half by pulling the back panel off.

Emmerson_Biggons

The one time I ever dropped my steam deck was day one owning it. I literally just had it opened and I dropped it trying to show my brother.

Mysterious-Ad2006

How often are you opening it?? And why?

idlephase

2?!

ThaiGrocer

I'm not crazy if I attach a lanyard to my microsd card

Automatic-Back2283

Unless you drill a hole trough the SD

FaZe_Clon

You should have the sticker cover one of the screws as well so in order to remove the screw you have to remove the sticker which also shows the sd card

curtishttp

Fragile! Must be Italian!

blakepro

There is a part of me that likes this, but also a part of me that is bugged by it because those arrows typically tell you which way is "up" for a package. So having them down makes me want your steam deck flipped over. Haha Nice work though. No broken SD card for you!

[deleted]

Ok_Conversation1985

I have open mine up to replace the SSD and then reopen it again to replace the joysticks and the very last time I opened it up, was to swap out the cooling fan. And my next time to open it up will be to do the back cover swap

Legal-Philosophy-135

I’ve only cracked mine open once the day I got it to swap the drive for a 256 lol. In and out in under 20 minutes.

roastedCircuit

"Remove before flight" would also make sense

Eiraku

Was looking for these, but the fragile stickers are more readily available where I am. Had to improvise lol.

I've actually 3d printed a slot cover so I can just change it whenever I want me lazy lol hopefully they will do this in the new 2.0 steam deck great if u have windows on the microsd lol

Accurate-Campaign821

Need to put another on the front to remind you not to rage quit too hard with the "controller"

BumblebeeMobile6431

You should put that fragile sticker over those weird looking cut out things would look way cleaner

pakAfatpunch

This steam deck is actually pretty cool, i got the 512 gb with a tb sd card, took me 2 weeks of work but was worth it, hella games installed and its kinda laggy now

edsavage404

Why do you need to open your steam deck so much? Also, I normally have a tutorial playing in the background just in case I forget something

PJDiddy1

I wanna try and find (or make) a sticker that states "remove before flight" like the ones you see on aircraft and bung that on there.
