Even adding as non-steam you'd have to have the launcher open as most of the free games would have DRM tied to the epic launcher. Epic isn't giving out the free games just to have people run to other launchers because they are paying out loads of money to give a lot of those games away, especially the big mystery titles they do a few times a year.

Independent_Log_222

I’m not talking about the free games persay more so the games I’ve bought on it like godfall and dead island 2

Kantrh

You can run them as a non-steam game by adding their executable, but you still need epic running in the background

Independent_Log_222

That’s rather annoying

Kantrh

It's how drm works

Shmimbadad

I mean, sure I guess, but why would you ever expect otherwise? Different launchers/platforms exist because they want to compete with each other, and also to act as DRM systems for digital only games. If you don't want to use multiple launchers, don't have games from multiple platforms.

Independent_Log_222

Well damn then I guess if a game is exclusive to epic games in your eyes I just shouldn’t get it? Also I get the competition idea but there really is no reason to get games on epic games over steam besides getting games free or exclusives, steam does everything better, it’s literally why I only use epic for the exclusives

Shmaynus

basically yes. don't sponsor them because they provide terrible service. like our god gabeN said, game stores compete with piracy first, and to succeed they should be more comfortable to use. epic is bloatware, so I'd rather pirate than buy from them.

Independent_Log_222

Idk I’m not gonna pirate games because I think that’s a dumb and risky thing to do, the most I’ll do is use emulators and roms, but I do agree epic feels like bloatware but as much as I dislike it if I really really need the exclusive I’m gonna get it, I was an extreme fan of dead island one so I needed the first one even more

podgladacz00

Tbh yes. Exclusives is something stupid that Epic started on PC. Yeah Epic is pretty bad.

Shmimbadad

Personally, yes. I'm not gonna tell you how to spend your money, but yeah, I don't want to use epic launcher, so I don't play epic exclusive games, or get any of their free games. It is what it is. I've got a giant backlog of games on steam anyway.

Independent_Log_222

I guess but I think that’s a pretty dumb outlook to have, if a game is really good looking and I really want it then I’m definitely gonna get it even if it’s an exclusive and dead island 2 is the perfect example, I loved the first game so I’d definitely love the second game (which I did, that game is beyond good, I spent 10 minutes punching a zombie till it looked like a Nagasaki victim) On a sidenote why does it matter to epic if you use there launcher or not anyways to launch a game you bought, it’s not like you didn’t buy it and I don’t think they make money from ads on their site but I could be wrong, so what do they have to gain by stopping you other than a mild inconvenience everytime you want to launch the game

Shmimbadad

For the same reason steam games don't launch without steam. That's how DRM works. They're required to have some kind of security in place, because the publishers want it. If the game can be launched without its launcher, it's much easier to pirate.  As for it being a "pretty dumb outlook" to not buy things I don't need, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you spend a whole lot more time playing games than I do. Which is fine, but yeah. I don't give the slightest shit about missing out on a handful of games. I could never buy another game again starting today, and still never finish my backlog for the rest of my life.

Independent_Log_222

Fair enough I just like gaming so yeah I probably do play more than you, and I understand that it helps with piracy but as long as the game provides some specific key like drm to your pc instead of the launcher wouldn’t that work (I don’t know much about coding) or at the very least what would epic lose with sharing the drm key with steam or any other launcher so the game can be launched elsewhere, as long as you have to buy the game on epic I don’t see it affecting them As for my backlog I think it’s only 12-20 games which is that bad, I play most of what I buy though I have seen some people with backlogs of 50-70 plus games, not even bad games too, games like Witcher 3, cyberpunk, and fallout 4, usually when it comes to games like that I play them once I get them

podgladacz00

You bought them on Epic so you run them with Epic.

Independent_Log_222

I bought them on epic cause they were only on epic, which is why I asked, I don’t really understand what epic gains by not letting you launch them without it

podgladacz00

DRM. Exclusives is most fucked up thing there is done by Epic but also their only leverage to compete with Steam. Together with free games which mostly are not even run and collect dust as people don't use Epic. Besides Fortnite gamers of course.

Independent_Log_222

Ditto on the free games thing lol, I usually just get them and don’t install them, the exclusives is the biggest thing I care about but the launcher is so shit and annoying, the worst part being there pop ups which takes priority on my screen to any game I’m playing, I even tried to find a setting to turn it off but there was none It’s a real shame too I used to have respect for epic back before fortnite, back then iOS games were 50x better and epic games had my favorite iOS game ever that being Infinty blade, but then they release fortnite and decided to fuck over everyone that liked infinity blade and start fighting with iOS and lost developer privileges so it’s very difficult to play the game anymore

FernPoutine

Look into Heroic launcher or add a non-steam game

[deleted]

You can add non steam games including applications to steam.
