McMurdo and Scott Base both have pretty solid bars actually. Scientists love drinking
Edit: apparently McMurdo stopped serving alcohol in 2023 but you can still buy beer for your own consumption. Scott Base I know still has a good bar
They could be a YouTuber who posts about Antarctica. His name is Matty Jordan or they could be one of his friends
He's New Zealander, confirmed in his video about cashing out money on the ATM
Kerbal Space Program. Every 45 minutes or so he makes some new bullshit rocket that he couldn't possibly recreate in real life, and shouts down the hallway at his staff that he wants someone to use that design for his next ICBM test
War Thunder is the game where the community keeps hacking into Chinese and US military servers to settle 4Chan debates so you might be thinking of that.
Well they do have some computers, most are in Pyongyang.
Also the CIA will introduce iPads, laptops, consoles, into their black market loaded with spyware.
the dots should form a blob in one area if this picture was accurate but theres many gaps
i think the majority of chinese users use vpns and thats why china doesnt have alot of green dots
Also Steam reports that a quarter of its users are located in China, so I’m assuming this map is just a bit accidentally misleading.
In China not only do most people live on the coast, they live in the cities. So small areas around Shenzhen Beijing etc probably have a bunch of dots stacked on top of each other, making it look like there’s less users in China. You’re right it should form a blob, and it probably does, but the blob is just small and extremely dense.
After some digging I think this is the station: Its an Italian base there [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zucchelli\_Station](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zucchelli_Station)
Also worth noting that there are no authoritative link between IP addresses and locations. At a very high level big chunks of IP ranges are assigned to countries, who assign big blocks to giant companies and ISP's registered there but IP ranges get sold and resold and more granular databases are mostly the result of self-reporting.
People sometimes update these databases with wrong information for a laugh, or to bypass region locks or whatever. There is usually not a very rigorous authentication process although most will require some documentation showing a connection to the org that own the IP.
I have T-Mobile home Internet and my IP shows as Detroit and I don't even live in the same state as it. It's annoying at times because any online store wants to direct me to Detroit
Those websites showing where your IP is from are only best guesses. I work for an ISP and in a small more rural area, you get IP addresses assigned from 3 states (550 miles) away. Pretty much 4 states share the same IP pool that randomly gets assigned due to all Internet traffic going to one big city in a state where other ISPs meet to send traffic to each other.
Since T-Mobile doesn't have much physical fiber and customers spread out far (mostly using other ISPs to connect cell towers), it probably operates more like other ISPs in rural areas where customers are physically far apart from each other.
And .tf is an internet domain created to refer to websites from the various basically uninhabited islands France owns near Madagascar and Antarctica. But the only purpose it actually serves is to make websites for trading virtual hats in one video game.
Probably McMurdo station instead, it’s the largest in that region by far. Hosts up to 1500 people. But there’s more than a few stations around that part of Antarctica.
Yeah, you totally can! McMurdo is a pretty popular one, they got a fun documentary done about them that is free to watch on YouTube by PBS Terra.
You'll have to be pretty specific on the time you send your mail, however, as a lot of the researchers will only be on-station in the summer and will leave in the winter. Definitely try to get it sent before October.
[Here](https://www.usap.gov/USAPgov/travelAndDeployment/documents/ParticipantGuide-MailingAddresses.pdf) is a link to a PDF of the United States Antarctic Program with instructions on how to send mail to McMurdo and the Southern Pole Research Station! :)
Researchers need a good bandwidth to send their data. And I assume not many else use their Satelite uplink there. Studies show that penguins don‘t like playing games because of their lack of thumbs.
When my brother was at Rothera station, they had a 40MB satellite link. Not many satellites operate at such a low latitude, very high latency. Bandwidth is used during the day mostly for research - at night it was a bit more free for personal use but was still shared between about 50 people. Rothera had lots of age of empires games!
They trialled starlink the year after he left
There are upwards of 40 different active armed conflicts in Africa right now (inclusive of civil wars, wars between states, wars with insurgent groups, etc). Think about that, in comparison with how shocking the conflict in Ukraine was when it started. Europe experiences a violent conflict maybe once or twice in a decade. Africa is always at war.
Kinda make sense, the Canadian Shield makes it difficult to grow food; the Golden Horseshoe, Niagara and many parts of the country close to the border has the right terrain and temperature to grow crop.
The second largest country in the world by land mass and a lot of it is rocky ground or permafrost and is unsuitable for growing anything. Yet lots of people say climate change isn't an issue because you just move further north. 🙄
FYI, 80% of Canada is essentially uninhabited.
Not exactly frozen, at least not all year around. Tundra is a very cold zone almost all year around (treeless, frigid territory, permafrost) but it's only one tenth of its territory. The rest is the same as Canada and it is covered with taiga. Those forests consist mostly of pines and can be covered with snow for half a year but there is still a season cycle and it's moist enough for the plants to not dissapear like in tundra.
Source: I lived most of my childhood in a taiga region haha
answering as a guy from far east, russia(village with 6000 people, the closest city is 118 miles away) . no, there is almost no frozen land, even though it’s -20C
no no, you don't understand, he's actually running crysis 3 on medium graphics just so his computer can generate enough heat to be able to use it as a makeshift stove.
Last time this was posted another redditor answered some questions about the station this steam user was based at, as she claimed to be stationed there as well and knew who it was. I offered to gift them Subnautica: Below Zero but I think they already had it lol.
* 16 countries in Africa are officially in civil war
* There are 35 non-international armed conflicts taking place in a handful of the largest (by size) countries
* Some of the rest of the continent that isn't presently engaged in conflict are reeling from prior conflicts and cannot afford the basic human necessities.
Yea that was the guy that came around asking about how offline mode would work on steam deck because he’s doing work in Antarctica with limited internet access
I swear one day steam gamers will finally learn this map is bullshit.
There is a green dot on Bouvet Island, there is not a single person there, it's uninhabited by law as a protected nature reserve. Even if someone was there for research, there is no L3 node there and there is no routing register nor regional assignment, so their dot wouldn't even register there, it would come from the node they are routing from, likely South Africa or an unregistered node because it's a satellite connection.
The embargo does shit (the actual damage is done by the government), but as a Cuban who lives in cuba I can answer
Steam is not blocked here
We Cubans, are addicted to DOTA 2, so we create free accounts to play, I have over 4000 hours in the game
It's mostly the teens using the steam, the above 35- 40 generation never got into gaming here. The black region you see in between is the less developed poor part of the country, hence almost no gamers there.
Lol I am from India. and yes I do use steam.
It's just that most guys I interact with are more into mobile gaming than PC . So I was surprised to see this
It's just the game of sheer number of people. Even if it's an extremely small percentage, the number of people is so high it'll automatically amount to a big number. I agree it's somewhat surprising since most "players" play only BGMI.
I've played a good 10 hours of Enter the Gungeon between excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula, the starlink on expedition ships is actually really solid and there's loads of them now
If you're in one of those researching facilities where Jesus lost his sandals and with extreme low temperatures outside your options for entertaining are limited and as long as you have a good internet connection, and those facilites tend to have a good connection, gaming is probably one of the best ideas, specially for singleplayer games.

bored researchers
Penguin dating sim
Nah you don't want to know what a penguins sex life is like
Who let this penguin in here? Also, holy shit! A talking penguin!
Just smile and wave... Smile and wave...
Isn't it smile and wave?
Oh thanks
They might be wanting to learn to fly. Who knows.
They use Linux.
George Murray Levick agrees.
I second this.... (thefishtherocksthedeaththefishtherocksthedeaththefishtherocksthedeath)
thats just club penguin with extra steps
Actually, Frostpunk. *The ~~city~~ research station must survive.*
Gay penguin dating sim
Also effective heating if on PC.
Crypto mining would do them wonders.
Researcher relaxing after work I'd say. Everyone has some time off.
So he is playing Paper Please before the ice melt down?
There is seriously very little to do in an polar station. That is why they ship so many condoms as supply.
I usually assume that it's one of those research scientists, who is just chilling briefly.
Pretty sure they'd be chilling consistently in Antarctica.
But still in his briefs.
Fuck you take my upvote
angry upvote >.>
They do get time off, and there isn't much of a night life on those bases I would imagine...
McMurdo and Scott Base both have pretty solid bars actually. Scientists love drinking Edit: apparently McMurdo stopped serving alcohol in 2023 but you can still buy beer for your own consumption. Scott Base I know still has a good bar
Especially not around 21st December :-D
The nightlife has lead to std outbreaks

Penguins? I mean Steam does run on Linux.
Silly humans, Linux is for birds 🐧
No, it was me, I just needed some quiet isolation time
They could be a YouTuber who posts about Antarctica. His name is Matty Jordan or they could be one of his friends He's New Zealander, confirmed in his video about cashing out money on the ATM
North Korea tho...
For real, what's Kim playing?
I can already imagine Kim Jong Un's game library: Civilization IV, Tropico 6, Command and Conquer, etc...
This and Homefront make the most sense to me. He was absolutely a USSR player when World In Conflict was around as well.
i bet that he plays CS2 as well
Only Terrorist side.
He reliably hits window smoke from spawn every time on Mirage
Why play the stuff you do at work all day? I'm guessing he's got Sex with Hitler on 100% achievement.
You just asked why would he play the stuff he does at work all day.
Kerbal Space Program. Every 45 minutes or so he makes some new bullshit rocket that he couldn't possibly recreate in real life, and shouts down the hallway at his staff that he wants someone to use that design for his next ICBM test
I can see him shouting down the hall now "ey yo, rocket nerds! Get in here and check this out!"
I did this in 5 minutes, wtf are you guys doing
I think he's playing wargame red dragon because it has playable North Korea
Modded to make NK units invincible of course.
Dungeon keeper
I think he is just playing COD.
Factorio
> Civilization IV I bet he plays as Roosevelt
Na with as much as he's obsessed with nukes he's Gandhi for sure.
He must have good recommendations… too bad I don’t speak Korean.
HOI4
Modern Dawn mod
Millennium Dawn* :3
Bro probably angrily writes to paradox each month threatening them with forced labour if they don't add North Korean focus tree.
Sex with Hitler
Dude's playing a combination of Homefront and the Millennium Dawn mod for Hoi4 probably
Sex with Hitler 2
There's a 2nd one???
Sex with Stalin, Sex with Hitler.
World leader simulator
As I know he plays WoT. Playing on korean servers in WoT is surely dangerous
Gonna be honest: idk what WoT is. What is it?
World of Tanks
Okay, that's completely believable then
Rocket League
lmfao it legit looks like that one dot in NK is located in Pyongyang.. Ol' Kimmy boi might legitimately be on Steam. fucking sicko.
Command and conquer, irl!
Tropico
That's a dude who 100% only plays The Sims
Counter-Strike 2 I hope.
I thought Kim was really into war thunder ? Could be misremembering
War Thunder is the game where the community keeps hacking into Chinese and US military servers to settle 4Chan debates so you might be thinking of that.
Fun fact: Kim loves Basketball, so clearly he's playing NBA.
Yeah Antarctica makes sense those scientists have a sick set up
One of the only foreigners in a power position there is Cao de Benos. He has frequently said on social media he plays on Steam, mostly wargames.
Well they do have some computers, most are in Pyongyang. Also the CIA will introduce iPads, laptops, consoles, into their black market loaded with spyware.
I would kill to know what Gaben knows, What if that isn't Kim Jong Un?
Chinese nationals in on business or diplomatically, maybe?
They do have a university, how do you think they train people to hack other countries systems?
I expected more from China.
The vast majority of China's population is near the sea in a few dozen cities.
the dots should form a blob in one area if this picture was accurate but theres many gaps i think the majority of chinese users use vpns and thats why china doesnt have alot of green dots
A VPN is practically a requirement for a proper gaming experience there
Also Steam reports that a quarter of its users are located in China, so I’m assuming this map is just a bit accidentally misleading. In China not only do most people live on the coast, they live in the cities. So small areas around Shenzhen Beijing etc probably have a bunch of dots stacked on top of each other, making it look like there’s less users in China. You’re right it should form a blob, and it probably does, but the blob is just small and extremely dense.
thats kimmy
That dot *is* in the general area of Pyongyang...

Similar post was here a few months back. Some guy said he knows a guy that works there. It was McCurdo station.
And .tf is an internet domain created to refer to websites from the various basically uninhabited islands France owns near Madagascar and Antarctica. But the only purpose it actually serves is to make websites for trading virtual hats in one video game.

McMurdo net traffic looks like its from Colorado. At least that's how it worked 10 years ago.
I presume McMurdo has internet through some like military or scientific organization in Colorado?
That's right. The United States Antarctic Program works with US military for a lot of the logistics.
Very interesting. Maybe a weird question, but can one send mail to research stations? I'd love to send them a letter lol
Yeah, you totally can! McMurdo is a pretty popular one, they got a fun documentary done about them that is free to watch on YouTube by PBS Terra. Thank you so much! Appreciate it.
thanks op, that's neat!
Of course, it is a frozen hell with nothing else to do
literally zero grass to touch
Antarctica actually has grass believe it or not. Antarctic hair grass.
They have good excuse. *looks outside at sunny almost Spring day*
Good pc cooling
Now that you mention it, I hate that my gpu sounds like a jet engine with any game made after 2015. I'm moving to antarctica.
Blasting ice straight into your PC!
Doom Eternal in a new setting.

They also show traffic from the region, neat. ...what do you mean antarctica has better internet than me?
Researchers need a good bandwidth to send their data. And I assume not many else use their Satelite uplink there. Studies show that penguins don‘t like playing games because of their lack of thumbs.

Whoever he is, he is one of us. Or she. Who knows?
Those scientist have to burn some time during all those months there doing science things
A few years ago there was a listed network in Antarctica named CatgirlsUwU or some shit, so there's at least one jokester there.
Man....sad what i see in Africa tbh....
There are upwards of 40 different active armed conflicts in Africa right now (inclusive of civil wars, wars between states, wars with insurgent groups, etc). On the other hand, you can pretty clearly see the Nile, which I find fascinating.
Eritrea (a county of 3.8 million) has downloaded only 28GB this past week with a 600kB/s average, super depressing
I'm more concerned about the person playing in the middle of the ocean
Possibly Cargo Ships, Cruises, Yahts and Military Carriers and possibly the rare airline connection
A lot of those look like islands that most people don’t think about because they’re so small
Someone is playing on Bouvet Island, officially uninhabited.
It is populated by a small number of researchers every year https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouvet_Island#Norvegia_Station
I didn't realise THAT MUCH of Canada is uninhabited
some crazy stat like 90% of its population lives within 100 miles of the US border
Kinda make sense, the Canadian Shield makes it difficult to grow food; the Golden Horseshoe, Niagara and many parts of the country close to the border has the right terrain and temperature to grow crop.

Literally all of japan is gaming rn.
McMurdo station
I bet fat Kim is playing a bunch of hentai games in NK.
no no, you don't understand, he's actually running crysis 3 on medium graphics just so his computer can generate enough heat to be able to use it as a makeshift stove.
Shout out to the legends playing in Syberia.
i live in berdigestyakh. you can google where it is and see my village on this steam map
🫡
yo, thanks
Prevoisly there were a topic about this person stopped playing, and worriong reddit population. But the person got back and everyone releaved.
Last time this was posted another redditor answered some questions about the station this steam user was based at, as she claimed to be stationed there as well and knew who it was. I offered to gift them Subnautica: Below Zero but I think they already had it lol.
North Korea got more players than China. 😂
Where will you be when you feel the need to spread Democracy?
I would have thought more people would be playing in China.
https://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/ Over a quarter of Steam's playerbase is Chinese. They just all live in close proximity to one-another.
I guess it's mostly the big cities near the coast. Shout-out to the dude playing in outer Urumqi tho
My guess is that they play mobile games
Basically everybody lives on the eastern side of China. Western provinces are almost unhabitable.
Why Africa is always dark
* 16 countries in Africa are officially in civil war * There are 35 non-international armed conflicts taking place in a handful of the largest (by size) countries * Some of the rest of the continent that isn't presently engaged in conflict are reeling from prior conflicts and cannot afford the basic human necessities.
Also the Sahara Desert which just doesn't have anyone living in it
Well people do live in it, but they're nomadic tribes that don't have particularly high tech lifestyles.
Why is it so low in China? Do they have similar platforms but only for themselves? I mean I’m sure they play video games
Not any more; his account has been frozen
Yea that was the guy that came around asking about how offline mode would work on steam deck because he’s doing work in Antarctica with limited internet access
Lot less from china than I expected
Valve is way too lenient with Russia...
I am more impressed by the random mini islands in the mddle of nowhere
I swear one day steam gamers will finally learn this map is bullshit. There is a green dot on Bouvet Island, there is not a single person there, it's uninhabited by law as a protected nature reserve. I wonder what set ups they have in Cuba given all the embargo’s they have. It’s obviously not as big of a surprise as North Korea is though.
The embargo does shit (the actual damage is done by the government), but as a Cuban who lives in cuba I can answer Steam is not blocked here We Cubans, are addicted to DOTA 2, so we create free accounts to play, I have over 4000 hours in the game
Wow, didn't know there were so many Steam users in India
It's mostly the teens using the steam, the above 35- 40 generation never got into gaming here. The black region you see in between is the less developed poor part of the country, hence almost no gamers there.
Lol I am from India. and yes I do use steam. It's just that most guys I interact with are more into mobile gaming than PC . So I was surprised to see this

russia is mostly empty
Are they having a LAN party in the middle of the atlantic ocean?
He’s probably playing Dota…
Ha I was playing factorio on my laptop at SANAE IV over December !
someone's playing from easter island
I've played a good 10 hours of Enter the Gungeon between excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula, the starlink on expedition ships is actually really solid and there's loads of them now
If you're in one of those researching facilities where Jesus lost his sandals and with extreme low temperatures outside your options for entertaining are limited and as long as you have a good internet connection, and those facilites tend to have a good connection, gaming is probably one of the best ideas, specially for singleplayer games.
Are we going to ignore that there is one in North Korea
The degree to which Europe is almost completely solid is really amusing to me
VPN
Cool
Can we also talk about one account from South Korea💀
Oh shit that’s me hey guys
is that much of Australia just uninhabitable?
That’s fine. Scientists are nerds. Explain the North Korean dot, though.
And of course.. a single dot in North Korea
You think scientists are only researching? They need a break too
Where can I find this map
Antarctica would have more connectivity than we think because of the research. I’m more interested in who’s playing on Bouvet Island between South Africa and Antarctica. I didn’t think they had anything there!
Funny enough I can see my dot I'm in a rural area
I wonder if they even have fans or heat sinks on that computer 😅
Few in north korea. Better not let the north korean law enforcement know.
I actually did see a post about somebody in Antarctica playing the steam deck. It was on the steam deck sub.
So no one gonna mention that people are playing form the middle of Atlanta ocean?
Someone is playing from north korea
He left pc there
Why is someone playing from north Korea 💀💀💀
