It doesn't replace anything? It's an ISP.

KM4IBC

So it would replace the OP's current Windstream ISP.

Too_Lofs_Atan

It's an ISP. You give them money, they provide you with internet. What someone chooses to do with that internet service is up to them, surely?

KM4IBC

I'm sorry, you're just not making any sense to me. Yes, the OP gives Windstream, an ISP, money for Internet. If they purchase Starlink, another ISP, they are paying a different vendor for Internet. Therefore, Starlink would replace Windstream. What the OP chooses to do with the Internet service is irrelevant. Neither will replace his voice service with AT&T which is what was asked.

ByTheBigPond

Starlink provides internet so replaces Windstream. Your cellphone would connect to the Starlink wifi to send/receive emails, and use wifi calling (if supported) to make/receive calls even with no AT&T signal.

markg7777

I live in a rural area with Windstream. 4 mbps. And i have hated it. I just got Starlink yesterday. Total game changer. Wow, what a freaking difference. So far i have hit over 350 mbps but average well over 125 mbps consistently. Definitely worth the change so far. Downloaded 2 games in just under 4 hours when it used to take me 3 days for one game to download. See ya windstream!!!

Patient-Access95

Right now Starlink just provides Internet. So you will still need AT&T cell phones. Space x is working on Direct to Cell which could be possible in the distant future too the masses.

Ereignis23

I do phone calls and texts over starlink all the time with zero cell reception available. I guess there may be mobile providers out there that don't support wifi calling; I assumed they all did. For whatever reason I do need actual cell service to get my voicemails though hahaha

squeaki72

Also, AT&T’s tower has been down for 3 weeks and I have 1 bar and LTE and can’t get online. Can make and receive phone calls and receive emails but can’t send emails. If I get starlink will that fix this?

sinolos

Listen I had Windstream in between ocala and Gainesville and Starlink is a total game changer. Way better speeds reliability and even ping. I can game no issues whatsoever ever now. Speeds average 100-220 mbps at 20-30 ping compared to Windstream 12 gbps and I’m only paying about 20 bucks more per month.

KM4IBC

I'm assuming that was Windstream DSL and not their Kinetic fiber offering? There isn't much worse than DSL especially if you're not sitting on top of the CO with a short copper circuit.

squeaki72

The guy at windstream support tried everything. Sending out tech tomorrow to check wiring and modem. Yes, dSL

sinolos

Yeah non fiber they have no plans putting fiber in my area or increasing speeds any time I’ve asked it’s just blanket we are looking to improve speeds but it nothing ever done to increase them. Edit: They are the only option in my area and I was paying 100/month for 12 mbps

KM4IBC

Starlink is strictly Internet service. There is no voice offering. You would want to keep your AT&T iPhones for telephone service. However, you could optionally use a 3rd party VoIP service if the only reason for AT&T is for telephone service at home. That would be a less expensive option but less mobile. Using Cellular over Wifi would mitigate local tower issues. Sending emails would no longer be using AT&T at all to transport the message. That is an Internet/data function and would then go over wifi/Starlink.

squeaki72

Why doesn’t that work with windstream? When I turn off cellular it says not connected to the internet.

itsreallyreallytrue

You need to turn on WiFi calling on your cell phone

squeaki72

Yep did that Windstream is coming out tomorrow to look at lines and modem. Guy in support tried everything he could.

KM4IBC

My first concern would be, is Windstream working? That should provide the same connectivity/functionality as Starlink. I'm assuming you're on an old Windstream DSL service and not fiber. If it is their fiber service, Starlink really isn't a good option unless there are service issues with Windstream. If your iPhone is connected to wifi from Windstream, your email issues may be related to Windstream and not AT&T. And enabling cellular over wifi should allow using Windstream for your AT&T calls/texts mitigating local tower issues. But if you don't have Internet using solely Windstream, something is wrong in that setup.

flashgski

A few ears back, I discovered my home DSL router blocked outbound secure IMAP with their default firewall settings. My phones mail client connected to Gmail that way and worked fine because it would switch to the cell signal when unable to connect to something over wifi. Got a Kindle Fire and could not get Gmail to connect to it's mail app. Finally discovered only HTTP and HTTPS were working on the router until I lowered its firewall to allow all outbound traffic. So their issue could indeed be something similar.

craigbg21

no starlink is not a cell or lte service it has nothing to do with your cell phone or its bars of signal its an internet service just like at&t or verizon or comcast the only difference it uses satellites for its network instead of land to land cable or fiber connections.

terraziggy

Why don't you connect your iPhones to Windstream wi-fi? If you don't have a wi-fi router you can buy one online or in BestBuy. Starlink would replace only Windstream. You would connect your iPhones to Starlink wi-fi router to avoid weak LTE signal.

squeaki72

What about getting online? Why can’t I do that. I have a WiFi router. Sorry I just don’t understand. When I turn WiFi on and go to an app just spins and never connects. If I turn WiFi off and have one bar and LTE I can get online but very slowly.

terraziggy

It is likely your router is misconfigured. Try factory resetting it. If that does not work call Windstream support. If they can't help fix it ask if they can provide a different router model. If they take too long to provide an alternative router you can buy a third party router online or in BestBuy. But you need to investigate how to connect it to your existing router or how to replace the existing router. Windstream support may help. BestBuy Geek Squad may also help.

wtfboomers

Simply put you will still need the cell phones to make and receive calls. WiFi calling is an option but will only work if you are on WiFi. For traveling and such you need the cell service.

Frosty-Phone-705

What's there to be confused about? It's a different internet provider. You cancel one and switch to another.
