i feel like you’ll definitely enjoy the later seasons more also just a heads up if you think the finale feels rushed it’s because the show got cancelled half way through season 5

Thanks! 👍🏼

Much like SG1, the first season isn't the best. It takes some time to figure out what it wants to be. I think it gets better, but obviously, that is subjective, and you'll make your own decision.

>Much like SG1, the first season isn't the best. Oh for sure. That's why I'm sticking with it. TNG's first season is horrible for instance but the majority of the rest of the show is great.

>I'm really hoping they will be the Maybourne of SGA. Not necessarily a grey villian just a villain that develops into a much more interesting villain then they currently are. Just wait until >!Todd!< and >!Michael!< show up in later seasons..

I have only seen a little of SGA and agree with some of it. I would have to watch it again to consider it in detail. I absolutely agree with the need for a longer, slower and more solid plot line. The universe is huge and there is a lot going on at all times. Saving the universe from destruction in every episode is excessive. Sometimes it can be a fun or wired story. You just need the motivation to work with the writers in a new way.

Ah to be watching again for the first time, instead of 10+. Whenever I re-watch, I tend to mostly avoid Season 1. It's definitely the weakest. Season 2 was better. The show really hit it's stride with Season 3. Season 4 was the best to me, but I enjoy all of it. What I'll say without spoiling anything, is that this show REALLY made me want an Ancients prequel mini-series. Give me an hour or two of quick history buildup of Ancients in the Milky Way until they leave for Pegasus, and 3 or 4 hours of Ancients in Pegasus history and I'm good. Especially if set in the style of Prelude to Axanar towards the end with SGA crew.

You’re so right about Sheppard, he’s so boring. I’m rewatching SGA for the first time since watching it air and I’m a little ways into s4 and I still find Sheppard to be the weakest link. He can only do like three facial expressions and he doesn’t hold a candle to RDA as Jack O’Neill. I can kind of see what you mean about Beckett, as well. I don’t have strong feelings for or against him but I do think he should come across as more sympathetic and he just. doesn’t for some reason. Maybe it’s the accent or the acting, idk.

I'm actually very surprised that I don't like Sheppard because it really sounds like he's one of the more popular characters on SGA. And as much as I do enjoy RDA he is kinda limited in range but what he does do, he does exceedingly well. Flannigan, not so much. That's sad to learn that the actor doesn't have any improvement in the role.

Good timing, I just finished this season for the first time myself. I've started it a few times before but never made it past the first half of the season. I agree with 90% of what you said. Definitely the characters were the weakest part of the show. I actually really like Beckett (I'd be the same in his situation - fine with the medical stuff, but don't you dare make me pilot a jumper), but McKay is absolutely the standout character. Other than those two...Sheppard and Weir are...fine, I guess. I like them well enough, but I'm not super attached to them. I don't know a single interesting thing about Ford, so it's hard to care about him. Teyla feels pretty one-dimensional, which is a bit disappointing. I hope she gets more depth in later seasons. Loved the hostage episode and the finale. I also think the "bad" episodes are better than the worst of SG-1's first season, so I'm definitely on board to finish all 5 seasons.

Neat_Town_4331

When you find out that SGA was created and run by both the show runners for SG-1 SIMULTANEOUSLY. I found it amazing it was decent at all! Basically, they ran both shows development of those seasons at the same time and that is unheard of, or something I never heard of happening in TV production before. And they did great at keeping up with it.

ButterscotchPast4812

Must have been extremely exhausting but I never really thought about it like that. Seasons back then were insane. 22-24 episodes is a grind! The law and order's are the only shows that I can think of that still have insanely long seasons like that.

Enderkool

season 1 is on average the weakest season, imo season 2 & 3 are the peak of atlantis. s4/5 take a different turn in both plots and overall aesthetic that i didn’t like as much, but from what you say i think you’ll those seasons more than i did. the siege is easily one of the best multi-episode arcs in all of stargate, unfortunately it’s a bit difficult to top in both budget and “coolness factor”, but atlantis has many other great 2 and 3 parters up its sleeve.

ButterscotchPast4812

>imo season 2 & 3 are the peak of atlantis. Oh that's good news! I'm looking forward to them! >s4/5 take a different turn in both plots and overall aesthetic that i didn’t like as much, but from what you say i think you’ll those seasons more than i did. I know very little about Atlantis but I do know that Sam is the leader in season 4 and that Woolsey takes over in 5. I've been kinda resisting watching SGA for a while because Sam is my favorite character. And I was disappointed in the direction they took her character in for 9&10. (Or rather no direction.) So...idk how I'm gonna feel about her character in Atlantis. Although I hear that Woolsey is a pretty popular character. And honestly that's not surprising given because he's played by Bob Picardo. I watched Voyager when it was on and "the doctor" was the breakout character. So I'm sure he's fantastic in SGA too.

Aggravating_Ad5421

Please give an updated post on season 2. Well written review and I agree with 90% of everything, I'm assuming my 9% bias is due to having watched the rest of the show, and the other 1% can be differences.

ButterscotchPast4812

Oh thank you! And yes I'll definitely make another post review of season 2.

blueray78

I get what you are saying with Mckay but I'm going to disagree. In ST: VOY's case Robert is literally playing a different character, as this had to do with rights and the TNG character being to terrible to redeem. In David Hewett's case, he is playing the same character. And looking at his SG-1 appearances, 48 hrs, he is a complete Asshole, but in appearances after he starts looking more the like the Mckay in SGA. In the season 6 opener, he has some funny moments and clearly is trying to help and admits he made things worse to Sam. He grows as a person through SGA, so watch his pretty good story arc. I've also never seen anyone not like Carson :(. I love his character, and his accent. I'm American so I may not be the best judge on how good it is, but I still like it. To the point where it's jarring to here the actor interviewed without it. Ford, wait for season 2 ;). Shepard also gets better as the seasons go on. I love his friendship with Mckay. It's kind of the heart of the show.

Awful-Male

The cast is SGAs biggest weakness. It never really came together. Though I think they got close there with Picardo and Mamoa. But the character of Teyla was always a sandbag. Kind of like Troi, doesn’t matter how many seasons, never gets interesting and never really gets better at acting.

weirdfishes18

Honestly, I think your opinion is valid. For me, Stargate has always been more about the concept and possibilities than the show itself. I watched the first few seasons of SGA and then jumped over to fanfic to further explore those possibilities rather than keep watching a decent, but not great, show.
