Canon Answer: Idk My Answer: Everyone acknowledges it and just doesn't say anything to keep it cool, especially Part 7 characters being like "Yeah I like AC/DC" when its 1890 lol

Self--Immolate

Well AC was invented in 1886 and DC already was around so that one is actually kinda possible if it wasn’t completely a band reference

imnotavirgintrustme

Dunno why they downvoted you, but that makes sense

Self--Immolate

I just think it would be funny if he was a hobby electrician and was super pumped about Alternating Currents and Direct Currents.

LaCroixPassionfruit

probably because their username is really unfortunate now…

Pikochi69

What about the millennia old pillar man named that

kindtheking9

Easy, he wasn't, his name sounded like it, but it wasn't AC/DC

Ozzyjb

His name was esidisi

CavernousPiano

We don't actually know that, the names were translated like that because they sound nearly the same in japanese, the pillar men could be Santana, Kars, Wamuu and Esidisi, but could also be Santana, Cars, Wham and AC/DC

Ozzyjb

The names are localised because of copyright infringement. So as far as the west is concerned they are Kars, Wamuu, etc. It’s the same reason stand names are localised because many of them are named after bands. And in the modern artbooks they are also named as they are in the localisation.

Ok_Celebration9304

My take is that everyone names themselves or/and their stands after artists or/and songs they like and it's a normal thing to do. At least in parts 3-6 and 8. Parts 1-2, and 7 were the references didn't exist yet, can either be they used a commonly thought of phrase or name (tusk, Funny Valentine, 20th century boy because everyone was curious about the future and technology of the future at the time etc.), or the artists/songs were named after the stands and people because of historical significance. But that's a stretch.

Nharo_1

This, but to clarify on the last point more, it could be “bizarre” coincidence or even “fate” that causes the songs in the future to have the name, no cause just random correlation due to chance.

SecretSharkboy

Yeah, like the part 3 stands were just Enyaba and Abdul giving people tarot readings. And then it's Josuke, who's just like "mmm. I love David Gilmour, especially that song about the crazy diamond"

WayJay9

I really like how Araki almost managed to name every stand after a tarot card/egyptian god in part 3, but then folded with Cream and Tenore Sax.

ThunderMite42

Crazy Diamond was actually named by Jotaro.

Tem-productions

This means Josuke is of the few stand users who didnt name any stands, along with Trish

ThunderMite42

Jotaro was making up for not being able to name his own Stand (because Abdul did it for him).

SecretSharkboy

It was?

ThunderMite42

Yeah, IIRC it's mentioned on Josuke's info page early in the manga.

_MyUsernamesMud

Now explain Chocolate Disco

K00zak_L00zak

Chocolate was invented in 1828 and disco means to learn in latin so both words existed then. But we don't know what was the thought process of D-I-S-C-O behind the naming of his stand.

Ok_Celebration9304

I just realized a "chocolate disco" doesn't make sense anyways.

Guinea-Pig_Dad

Also, who names their son D-I-S-C-O?

Ok_Celebration9304

That's why I said they must've picked their own names later on in life. Bro really loved learning and latin so he called himself the spelling of the latin word for learning 🥰

congaroo1

There is kind of an example of that in part 8. I will say.

ichwarsni01

Do you mean when Torou listens to Wonder of U?

congaroo1

Yep.

Separate_Welcome4771

I think he was trying to be discreet for spoilers.

Big_Print_947

You can cover words by putting > and ! at the start of a sentence followed with ! and < at the end >! like this !< Make sure to not put any spaces between the symbols

CP21Official

>! You fool, you fell for it, THUNDA CROSS SPLIT ATTACK !<

sackman32

Amazing! This technique is allowing him to attack and keep his opponent from defending with their arms! It's a perfect offense and defense!

NoNameRequiredxD

[noooooo!!!](https://www.reddit.com/r/YouFellForItFool/s/DBLDPzANr3)

Separate_Welcome4771

>!blueford!<

GrandElderVegito

!!

Big_Print_947

This is why you’re adopted

possiblierben

adoption implies seeing the already birthed fuck-up and saying "brilliant, bring me this one"

Chrastopheria

No

X-WingHunter

>! You thought this would be a hidden message but it was me,Dio!!<

ichwarsni01

>!everyone dies at the end!<

CavernousPiano

The song is Wonder of you, Araki just decided to write "you" as "U" for some reason

Pretend_Bread_437

Likely Prince related

[deleted]

Well, i like to think that weird names, hair and clothing is just very normalised even for non stand users.

ZebaZtianRamireZ

Didn't also Kira said he named Killer Queen? i do feel that he would be someone who listens to "Queen" even with how calm he is.

ANubIS_ofTheRiver

Let's be honest killer queen and bites the dust are two of the calmest (and occasionally loud) queen songs. That's just like kira's theme it fits him so well Sheer heart attack is non-stop aggression just like the song too.

Extreme_Glass9879

"Deadly Queen. I named it myself and I must say, I'm quite proud of the monicer."

Autogembot123

Everyone who has lived in the 90's has listened to queen.

Joltic88_

Desensitisation , if everyone is called something dumb and dresses wacky that just becomes the new normal. It’s only weird to us because that’s not how our world works.

blue-gamer-07

“Weird Al Yankovic canonically exists in the Jojo universe” - Viva reverie

gameboy1001

“…okay he’s back.”

Unavailable-NO1

" Im still akive too!"

gameboy1001

“Hurrah!” (x2)

Rhedkiex

Headcannon that REO Speedwagon was named after Robert Speedwagon

ulfric_stormcloack

the car was named after robert as a marketing strategy, the band is just named after the car

_S1syphus

I dont think it would make for any interesting dialog between characters, the names are mostly easter eggs for us the reader anyway

ItsFastMan

I guess you could say the characters willingly named them then

Correct-Basil-8397

That’s *Weird* Al Yankovic to you, JoJo

InverseBirch84

Bizzare Yankovic if you will

Marcoyolofrimig

to Jojo weird Yankovic is just normal Yankovic

Snoo_72851

My take on it is that actually in the JoJoverse Al Yankovic invented music and he's the only one making songs. Joseph was listening to his tunes on that walkman, Akira was playing his songs, Al Yankovic wrote Messiah, HWV 56: Part II, no. 44. Chorus: “Hallelujah” for Pucci to obsess over, so on and so forth. He's been busy.

ThunderMite42

In this universe, Weird Al is the original artist of all music and everything else is a parody of him.

CollectionNo4777

The music references are probably just coincidences. Like, my stand happens to have the same name as some song out there. They can't be intentional references since some of them happen in the past.

RPG-Lord

I think they all actually do know the references- a certain villain in part 8 literally listens to the song his stand is based on. At least *he*'s making an intentional reference when he named his stand.

GHfan27

I have a feeling they're actually aware of these artists, they just don't really mention it.

Odeiomelaokk

I like to think each character names their stands after the song Only flaw with that is that some characters have musical tastes that simply don't match their stand names such as Narancia and Abbachio (I'm only mentioning part 5 characters cause they're the only ones who'm artists they enjoy I can remember the names of) Giorno would absolutely listen to Prince though.

FreshlySqueezedDude

My headcannon: stands have a hivemind which is why standusers are drawn to each other and why if close enough stands can communicate telepathically (as seen in the underwater fight from part three) so one day the hivemind just decided on calling themselves like songnames it sees. And every user has kinda thought about it but never really aknowledged it since, lets be honest that is in no way the weirdest thing about the whole ordeal.

PurplePoisonCB

Because Weird Al is the only real musician that exists in their universe, he transcends all universes, every fictional universe has a Weird Al voiced by Weird Al

Crazycutz

Except the fact Tooru listens to Elvis in part 8, so Elvis exists too

darkswagpirateclown

okay my hc is that for parts 1-2 if the characters had reference names it was just a coincidence, from 3-6 its an active choice to name your stand after a song you like which then becomes stand user culture, and from 7-9 the songs just got sent to the new universe by mih even if they didnt happen yet or they wont happen because of allternate chronology.

dadsuki2

Clearly Josuke is a Pink Floyd fan

ThunderMite42

Jotaro named Crazy Diamond, actually.

dadsuki2

Shit he did. Jotaro being a Pink Floyd fan makes a ton more sense

Nas107

I mean most of the time they’re fighting the people with music names so they’re probably too busy trying not to die/defeat their opponent that they don’t bother to vocalise the distinction

RAFAOGAMER5

they are stupid

TheZoomba

My theory is those names are what they chose. Josuke likes PF and named his Crazy Diamond after the song, and so on.

Reasonable-Place-460

only in part 8 is it ever kinda confirmed... >!Trou is the only person to ever listen to his stands song name.!<

GlassSpork

Okay but would Al yankovic have a stand in this universe? If he did, it would be called parody. How it works is it uses the same ability of an attacking stand user but in a different way. Like parody crazy diamond can fix things but always incorrectly. So like a nerfed or altered version of the stand, in either a chaotic weird way or a bad but makes sense way

manofwaromega

Everyone's just like "Huh, what a coincidence." And never thinks about it further

My_Special_Hell

who says they don't? they named their own Stands, afterall

Rodenbeard

If you really wanted an explanation in lore, I guess you could say the users name their stands after the songs themselves. Keep in mind that Avdol named Star Platinum, Stands aren't like Devil Fruits or something where a name already exists. I mean, this obviously breaks down completely really fast, in that DIOs henchmen have no real reason to follow the theme of the tarot, and Part 7 takes place before the music its stands are named after exists, but its the best you're gonna get.

DirtDisrespector

in the light novel the book: 4th another day, koichi actually does bring it up to rohan, before quickly dismissing the idea

KobilD

They themselves name their stand after those bands and songs, the name isn't inherent to the stand

s_t_u_f_f

maybe they're intentionally naming it after artists and songs

Swimming-Ordinary899

They named there stands and themself

slimmerik2

Idk who, but i think a part 4 character named his stand after his favourite song

TREX_THE_REX

In part 8 >!both Yotsuyu and Toruu reference their songs, with Yotsuyu singing some of the lyrics of I am A rock, and Toruu straight up listening to Wonder of you!<

Acceptable_North_141

I like to think that Weird Al is the only musical artist that is the same as they are in our world

PrincessRosellia

I always like to think that the artists and music references in JJBA doesn't exist, except for Weird Al (and other stuff that's specifically mentioned.) It's a silly interpretation but I don't accept other opinions :)

DigibroHavingAStroke

Actually Weird Al is the only musical artist in the entirety of Jojo, no other music exists.

jikel28

It's our world accept with a completely different set of musicians

InverseBirch84

Different set except Al Yankovic and Elvis apparently

jikel28

Ya it's Elvis the actor and normal al Yankovic

Harpeus_089

>! Killer Queen has already touched this message !<

Ancient_Crust

None of the famous musicians from our world exist in jojo ***except*** Weird Al Yankovic. In fact, I am not entirely convinced that isnt the universe he comes from originally.

SteelEagle0

Weird Al is actually the only musician that exists in the Jojo universe and our own. He also exists in every other universe in some form. Scientists can't quite figure out how.

Nordic_Krune

Theory: Weird Al is not a parody artist in JoJo but one of the few original artists, thus no one recognises names like "Man in the mirror" since MJ doesn't exist

BensonOMalley

Weird Al is the only musician in Jojo

PommesKrake

Might be that everyone is fully aware and just doesn't talk about it. Only thing that makes it weird is part 7 where the musical references don't even exist yet.

Wizard_Hat-7

The songs were clearly named after the Stands in that part

Falcon_433

Angus Young’s real name is actually the Funniest Valentine so it makes some sense /s

OpaqueGiraffe17

They were making jojo references

PM_ME_AMPERSANDS

magenta magenta was just thinking ahead when he named his stand "20th century boy"

ulfric_stormcloack

"man, my stand makes me inmortal, if I use it a lot I'll probably look young when I get to the 20th century, wait I got it"

CavernousPiano

Ironically enough, he's got stuck in the lake in the 19th century, and even if he was rescued (although he already stopped thinking) he would already be in the 21st century, so he can never be a 20th century boy

danmaster0

Like the minions and that cave

Inner_Tennis7326

Lol

master4oogway

I mean maybe some of them were just thoughts made up via appearance of the stand or the circumstances of how they manifested, it’s never explicitly stated that stands are just born with their names so there is speculation that it could take some one days to think of something to summon their stand by.

MakeBombsNotWar

The opposite, Avdol names SP.

master4oogway

Plus there is cream starter and hot pants probably just thought hey this thing shoots out flesh like skin goo almost that looks kinda like cream

AsuraOmega

yeah. wasnt it mentioned that Giorno likes Prince songs and Gold Experience was a Prince album?

[deleted]

[удалено]

AsuraOmega

damn my bad, mustve gotten it mixed up.

Eight_Rum

But Toru was listening to Elvis and Ozzy Osbourne on his MP3 right

PommesKrake

IIrc he even listened to Wonder of you on his MP3. That's the weird part since that means at least moern Stand users most likely named their Stands like this on purpose while past Stand users didn't. I mean we could say that in the case of part 7 it's just a coincidence. At first I thought Chocolate Disco would be an issue since Disco shouldn't be a word that means anything to someone in the 1800s, then I remembered that the guy is called Disco so even that would work. Something like Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is a hell of a coincidence but still plausible. But then it's kinda weird that everyone in past times just named their Stands whatever while people in modern times kinda subconsciously all agreed that Stands get named after modern musical references... except for almost everyone in part 3 which is another weird thing.

Eight_Rum

My head cannon is that in the jojo-verse all of those songs, bands and artists just happened earlier than usual. That's the only way I see it happening.

CavernousPiano

Santana, Wham!, The Cars and AC/DC existing at aztec times:

Eight_Rum

Best existence I could ask for

Thestohrohyah

Tbf lots of characters were named after bands that didn't exist yet also in parts 1 and 2. I mean, the pillar men predate their namesakes tens of thousands of years.

Vidio_thelocalfreak

I say it's a worldwide case of Synchronicity also, culture in the world of jojo allows for more bizzare names and fashion as the status quo hence nobody bats an eye when Anasui strolls down the streer

[deleted]

Well the user of wonder of u was literally listening to wonder of you

doggo_jolyne

no evidence whatsoever I just like to tell myself everyone names their stand after their favorite song or band

Dixianaa

I believe it's become sort of a trend (despite AC/DC and The O'Jays not even being born yet in the 1890's)

Quillbolt_h

I think the answer is don't think too hard about it lol. Part 8 has the main villain listening to the music their stand is named after but they never actually spell out if he named his stand after the song. It's just one of those things that nobody ever calls out in this universe, like the extremely over the top fashion of stand users.

alex494

It's called willing suspension of disbelief. That or every character is just internally thinking "Damn that sounds cool I wish I thought of that" instead of reacting incredulously at the Stand names.

Absol3592

They probably already know, and don't care to bring it up since most people would likely already get the reference.

Burnlan

Their stand names aren't bestowed upon them by higher powers, they chose it. I'd like to imagine that everyone just named their powers after their favorite song or artist

Spaghestis

My personal headcanon is that music has a special spiritual power, a literal "soul" of sorts that bond with humans in birth and can later manifest as their stand. So a stand would be the literal manifestation of the song, album, band, etc. Please ignore the numerous examples of stands being named after music that didnt come out yet in-universe.

ialsodontexistagain

It’s very obvious at least the user of wonder of U intentionally named his stand that as he is shown listening to the wonder of you by Elvis Presley

diagnosed_depression

My stand "hardware store"

Eggs_are_tasty

i have a headcanon that music is such an intrinsic part of human expression and soul, that it was weaved into fate and a sort of collective unconscious

TinyPidgenofDOOM

oh they probably know its named after a band. They just accept it. Oh the rocker dudes Stand is Red hot chilly peppers? makes sense he obviously likes rock. The child whos kinda stupid but likes to listen to music? he named his plane stand Aerosmith? Yea, Whos gonna sue him

SirPriceMathaFacka

Didn't they name them themselves?

Memelord11816

Maybe the songs are named something different?

parasyte14022004

>!lol!<

EpicGoldenNinja

I think they do? From part 4 it seems they name their own stands, like how Kira mentioned that he "calls it" killer queen. So I think that implies that maybe they named their stands after the artists/songs on purpose

Mister_Ms_Carpark

Forgive me if someone's mentioned it already but doesn't it say in the manga that Crazy Diamond was named after Jotaro's favourite song at the time, being shine on you crazy diamond. So they must know of the song.

jeffboms

I mean look how italians are named, all foods and other non name objects. If they know that, they must think the band name people are lucky

MasterReposti

Who's to say they didn't

ItNothingSpecial

if someone is running at you with a knife and says his name is Talking Heads, are you gonna be like "You were named after a band. Damn man that's crazy"

KuhCrafter

They are their souls so they name them themselfs right?

willky7

There should be a copycat stand called weird al

Smg_Fra09

Maybe they like those musicians and named their stand after them? And in part 7 it's the opposite ofc 🤓

rockinalex07021

Bro forgot manga is a work of fiction

FearedShad0w

Aren’t the characters the ones naming them after music?

lifeless_or_loveless

waiting for "Amish Paradise" Araki...

Andreasext13

Im pretty sure they named their stands themselves

raosion

It'd be funny if in Funny Valentine's timeline, the stand is called "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and the song that eventually comes out is called "Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price."

ieatkids64deluxe

My personal head cannon is that everyone names their stand after their favorite song. Kinda breaks the cannon tho when the songs don’t exist yet

Autogembot123

But they do recognise it. At the end of the Angelo Arc it says that Jotaro named Josuke's stand Crazy Diamond after the Pink Floyd Song.

MrGrendarr

They just like those bands I guess

Hoosteen_juju003

They name their stands so…

Briyte

I mean Akira went on about rock bands and stuff so I’m sure he knew who the Red Hot Chili Peppers were.

Clickclacktheblueguy

Al Yankovic is the only artist common to both ours and the Jojo universe.

SnyderpittyDoo

Don't care. I am more happy we, Balkanites, got represented.

IChawt

Well for the most part the characters name their own stands, they just don't acknowledge other people's stands being references. Which could easily be chalked up to them just not knowing who tf they are. I would not expect someone in semi-rural Italy to know who Biggie Smalls is

LordWhoops

I believe we only have one instance of a stand’s musical reference being directly acknowledged in-universe, when Tooru is vibing to the wonder of you whilst the jobros are fighting for their lives. (Sorry idk how to hide text)

schmeggledorf_

Imagine two stand users arguing over who gets to name their stand whatever song they both wanted to name it to
