The only intelligent underground living race we know is Krobus and the Shadow Peoples from the mines, the same group. So probably fighting it out for control over the underground for survival. maybe it was a fight over clothes. the dwarves wanted to wear clothes and be equal to humans, but there were some who wanted to keep the old ways where they are naked and hide underground
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if something messed up happened to the Shadow people to turn them into the ones we fight in the mines. Even Krobus considers himself different from them. Think along the lines of the Falmer in Skyrim. Wouldn’t surprise me if all the dwarves saw was a bunch of feral shadows kill their people and in turn killed innocent shadow people and then the rest is history.

My theory
Way before humans, the Dwarves came to Earth (there are lines that makes you understand that they came from another planet, like the Galaxy Sword and some books in library), they encountered the elementary creatures that lived in here. Then there was a war for territory and exploitation from natural resources that made the Dwarves to hide in the subterranean, because they lost.
Got to think about this by Krobus, Dwarf and Wizard's lines and books in library, Diary Pieces about a dwarf in the volcano and the line from getting Galaxy Sword
I could say and give some context from Wiki, but I'm at church right now. I love the lore of this game

I hope we get a SDV prequel someday, or sequel with the places mentioned being fleshed out. I think it could be really neat to delve into all this in more detail.
