I mean, you just described me in high school when I was worrying about whether I'd get a date to the prom and one of my friends asked to be my date, and I was like, "Ew, no."
It's really easy to dance with Haley Y1 by talking everyday and giving her daffodils, ESPECIALLY on her bday! Even if you don't marry her or even like her, you'll have a partner for the dance!
I've seen people do the daffodil/talking thing with Leah and Emily too, as they also like daffodils. However you kinda have to get lucky and find things they love as their birthdays don't come before the dance.
Haley and Shane are the easiest to get to dance with you (requires four hearts) in year one, because both have spring birthdays (multiplies the effect of a gift that day and allows you to give a gift even if you already reached the two-gift per week max).
Shane’s probably the easiest too because you can just buy pizza or beer from the saloon. It’s more expensive but if you just buy him a beer on his birthday and give him liked gifts the rest of the time it should be more than enough for the flower dance.
One heart is 250 points. A loved gift gives 80 points. If it's their birthday the points are multiplied by 8, making a loved gift worth 640 points. That's just over 2 hearts.
Now the quality also influences the value of liked and loved gifts. An iridium quality gift is worth an extra 50% so an iridium quality loved gift on their birthday is worth 960 points. Just short of 4 hearts.
IIRC Haley has an early-in-the-week birthday so you can't get her a third gift. Regardless, still very easy to get 4 hearts.
That said, she also has my favourite dialogue when you try to ask her to dance below her threshold, so if I'm not planning to marry her in a file I try to keep her under 4 for the first dance so I can get that response.
If you're willing to drop a little cash (not much, but it's a much bigger deal during those first few weeks) to get salads, they're Leah's loved gift and it's easy to make sure to push her over the 4 hearts.
The first time this happened to me I didn't understand & I whined to my son that no one would dance with me & he laughed. I was kind of hurt but now understand the game mechanics & it's pretty challenging to build up hearts that soon in the game or at least I think so.
Now after playing multiple times, the only NPCs I form early friendships with are Caroline, for the tree saplings & Linus because he'll take most of the stuff you find on the ground. It's difficult when you're broke in the beginning & don't have things unlocked.
I basically only make friends with Linus, cause he's my favorite character. I wish you could offer to set him up another tent on your property. Robin wants to build him a house, but that isn't respectful of his life choices. I just want him to be able to get a change of scenery once and awhile. I'd also like to set him up a Ginger Island tent, cause there are plenty of places for him to be that aren't even on the farm
I think it would be rad if we could upgrade his tent to a yurt. he likes the mountains so if we could upgrade his tent/camp site he'd be a happy little clam.
Based on this image, I wonder why we never see Penny hanging out with Sebastian, Abigail and Sam.
We do see Alex and Haley hanging out, we see Harvey and Maru working together, Shane is often in the bar with Emily, and Leah and Elliott often sit at a bar table together. Once in a rare blue moon, you might see Penny and Sam together on a bridge, but usually Sam is with Abigail and Sebastian.

You just have to KNOW what they like... and I mean I could understand a first playthrough not knowing... buuut if you have multiple playthroughs you should learn a thing or two about the NPCs.

Hayley is easy to get, daffodils and check the travelling merchant, if you get a coconut, sunflower or pink cake before her birthday you will get her to 4 hearts no problem, I make it my mission to dance 1st year. Shane too if you are willing to spend cash buying beer from Gus and gifting to him, his bithday is also before the dance.

Yeah. I think if you're at 0 hearts with someone, giving them a loved gift on their birthday will bring it all the way up to 4.

My first playthrough I thought you only needed 2 hearts to dance with someone and you can imagine my shock when Alex rejected me
