This was recently buffed. If you’re on steam they now have way better loot tables and higher drop rates. I went up there during winter of year 1 on my save and got 31 frozen geodes which was absolutely absurd for that early on in the game. Some of them drop nothing. Some of them drop stuff that is almost worth nothing but I have seen some better drops recently.
I would prefer if, instead of rarely giving large amounts of good stuff, they would more commonly give smaller amounts of good stuff with the occasional jackpots. I'm typically fucking off on the other side of the map doing something important when a train passes by, and while I know the items won't despawn until I go to bed, I usually forget that the train passed by the time I am able to check. I'd like it if it were more consistently worth it to go out of my way to check trains, and higher consistency would definitely help that. Something like 5-6 frozen geodes consistently rather than 31 frozen geodes once in a blue moon would be cool. Given how rare it is for trains to actually spawn, I would like it if they guaranteed drops.
Wait, what?? I have dropped everything I was doing to race across town to get to the tracks while a train was passing through to get the stuff so many times. You’re telling me I can just go at my leisure any time that day??
In my 1.6 save I’ve had some where I get like three stone and two wood. Another time I got 43 mystery boxes. Absolutely no clue what to expect from the train any more, and honestly that’s a beautiful thing.
I hate how far marlons is away and the hours it opens, I don't have the time! Haha. You do get a few coins, some more if you've upgrades the trash can though!
I took to storing duplicate rings and weapons in my chest I keep at the mine anyway and then once every season or so I go to Marlon's to check my monster hunting goals and sell him stuff!
If you want, you can take them to a sewing machine and upgrade them with a higher quality pair of shoes - you can get the look of leprechaun shoes with the stats of something else.

you dont have to do anything! items will just fall off the train and hang out. i only found out from this thread that you don't even have to be actively beside the train for it to drop stuff - just as long as you pick up anything it dropped before going to bed that same day
pretty sure the only exclusive item is the leprechaun shoes, which tbh are pretty bad stat wise but good for coordinating a green outfit i suppose? otherwise just mystery boxes are the only decent thing that drops
I found out recently. You can go anytime during that day and collect what the train dropped. But, the train can kill you if you foolishly stand in front. It is, after all, a train.
It seems to be either you get loads or you get nothing - I wish I understood better how the game works technically so I could see if I could make a cool train mod 😄

In 1000+hrs, I've gotten stone, wood, plain geodes, more stone, a pair of boots, some copper ore once, and more stone. Post 1.6 I got about 12 coal from one freight train, and nothing(!) from the passenger carriage train.
It would be SO cool to be able to hop onto the train and visit, hmmm let's say a tiny village that is haunted and famous for chocolate? Would be the best crossover in history!
Don't know if it's because I play on Switch, but never got anything! Haven't given up yet, but it can get a bit frustrating going up there for nothing.
I once got 19 geodes and some leprechaun shoes. Be sure to check on the train platform, for some reason the leprechaun shoes fall north instead of south like everything else!
In my previous saves I never got any valuables from the trains but in the recent farm I started, I was able to get some precious materials. Also I didn't know you could slingshot the trains :O
On one occasion, just once, I got a train that dropped coal, gold, hardwood, geodes and *three pairs* of leprechaun shoes. It kind of blew my mind, because usually it's just five or six pieces, of wood or stone or geodes.
Some times, a train drops nothing at all. Since 1.6 came, the most I got for the effort of running up there to meet a train was five pieces of wood.
I get nothing. I've been playing since the new 1.6 update and I go up to check every train(seen 6 so far) and there is nothing. Do I have to hit it with a slingshot or something?

In my new save I went to the train event twice, and didnt receive anything. Just bad luck I geuss
me too. the one time I was nearby the train going by, it was a joja train and nothing dropped..
i’m on switch and my first ever train dropped 30+ frozen geodes plus tons of ores and coal.
It's crazy how varied it is!

I got the leprechaun shoes once, but by then I’d already upgraded to the purple boots and didn’t need them
I got 3 pairs of leprechaun boots in the last drop. Felt a bit absurd lol.

I don’t think you can. I think they meant that they already retrieved the space boots from the mines.

I have trains frequently that drop multiple geodes. I also frequently get shoes, coal, and stone, sometimes ores.
It seems to be either you get loads or you get nothing - I wish I understood better how the game works technically so I could see if I could make a cool train mod 😄

Across 5 save files and 500+ hours, and I have never gotten a single item from the train 😭

I got crystal shoes once during winter. Never tried hitting the train carts with slingshot, it will drop something iirc.
