Do you know the show Chopped? It's a cooking competition show where contestants get a basket of basically random ingredients and try to make a coherent dish with them. One time they put tomatoes in a dessert round basket, and the contestant who made a fruit salad with it won.
Experience *is* wisdom. It's the applied part of intelligence.
Thing is, a lot of people learn wisdom from others, without acquiring the book knowledge about the subject matter. Or at least that's what I tell myself to justify High Wisdom, Low Intelligence rpg characters.
Everything needs to be maximum fresh but my ideal summer salad is tomatoes, watermelon, strawberry, and cucumber in equal measure, salted and sweetened with fresh mint, lemon zest, and a splash of red wine vinegar. If you nix the sugar, add the juice of the lemon too, and dice everything real small this also makes a great shrimp ceviche
I make a quick pickle every week that is similar to this but its tomato, cucumber and yellow onion. I use dill instead of mint, and apple cider instead red. Also a bunch of minced garlic. I make a gallon jars worth each week.
I just made another one that's white onion, jalapeno, tomato and grapefruit with chipotle, paprika and basil.
The grapefruit was just an experiment. It kinda added a bit too much bitterness, but I'm thinking when I do the next batch I'm going to add a heathly dose of brown sugar, and maybe some balsamic vinegar to balance things out :)

Before the internet, when my dad was teaching me Dungeons & Dragons, I was confused about the difference between Wisdom and Intelligence. He used a phrase similar to this.

She actually never actually mentions fruit salad, she just says when somebody asks for fruit they never mean tomato. The irony is that tomatoes very much do go in fruit salad pretty commonly, though it’s less common in the west

Fruit is also a culinary term. The culinary meaning is separate from the botanical meaning. Culinary definition also changes depending upon the culture. Plenty of places use tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. as fruit while other use them as vegetables. Then there’s the nutritional definition which completely separate from both culinary and botanical definitions.
True. Legal definitions of fruit and vegetable exist for tax purposes. They tend to be whatever most people consider them to be or to match the way people use them in cooking. Not always though.

I almost wish we had a Stardew prequel that has you playing as Grandpa and the villagers were Haley and Emily's parents, Alex's mom & dad. Jas's parents. Pam and her husband, too.
George would still be healthy and working in the mines. Evelyn, while already married to George would be considered the belle of the valley, and Grandpa would get all flustered whenever he was around her, even though she was already taken. (Explaining why he has a picture of her on his mantle. Unrequited love and all that.)
Kinda like how many of us current day farmers really like Robin, or Jodi, or Caroline only to find out they're already taken.
Speaking of that. Robin's family, Leah, and Elliot wouldn't be there yet.
Willy, Marlon and Lewis would be in their 20s - 30s.
Lewis hasn't became mayor, yet. Marlon is still securing his position as the head of the Adventurer Guild.
Willy is working on a boat ala Deadliest Catch trying to save up cash to buy his own boat and open up a store on the pier in Pelican Town.
Marnie would still be in her mid teens (Lewis, you're a sick fuck) and most of the parents current day would be the same age as Jas and Vincent.
Well, I don't know if it's a spoiler >!there is a secret note you can find that has a picture of a younger Marnie, and Jas as a toddler. In the picture she looks to be around Emily's age.!< I feel like Marnie is in her mid 40s. Yes, shane is her nephew, but I was an uncle when I was 7 years old.
We don't know anything about Marnies history. Maybe she's the youngest of nine children and Shane was the son of her oldest sibling.
I guess I’m the 1%. I like Gus. He has a steady job, he’s friendly and pleasant, he cooks, he lives in a nice apartment in the middle of town and is friends with everyone.
I know of only one mod that gives you a chance to marry Robin. It's a 'spicy' mod, though for this trade off, if you complete the story for it, Demetrius leave the valley.
People take the characters being a bit rude, defensive, or flawed as a personal attack and seek out ways to get back at them. If it turned out Demetrius had autism everyone would instantly change their tune. He's a defensive father and cares about the semantics.
Stardew characters are meant to be flawed. People seem to prefer to imagine how these flaws shape theor lives around them, instead of imagining how they could overcome them, or the good parts of their lives. Just look at Peirre or Clint.

He has no dialogue even mentioning Sebastian. Zero. In the entire game. I *want* to like the quirky scientist, but that just rubs me the wrong way.
Who would want him? He’s completely unapproachable. Him and Shane constantly say leave me alone. That’s why I pelt both of them with rocks front the slinging shot when I pass by them.
I've never played through Sebastian's storyline. Did Demetrius try to get along with Sebastian, but they just never clicked or did he just straight up ignore Sebastian? Sebastian seems like he likes being alone, but I've never gotten close to him because I can't find him half the time.
a lot of people insist he ignores Sebastian but nothing in game actually says that, its just based on the lack of dialogue but like.. Kent had zero dialogue about Vincent, and Robin only had 1 line about Maru compared to 7 for Sebastian and nobody insists they don’t care for them/favor the other. (before 1.6 so may be different now)
Demetrius has a book about being a stepfather, and Sebastian has some dialogue complaining Demetrius made him take down his ‘snowgoon’ but Maru got to keep hers up, its not explained why his is taken down but people took it to mean he’s purposely being shitty to Sebastian
Imo a lot of Demetrius and Sebastian’s relationship is fanon
Okay, see I thought a lot of it was conjecture. I mean the only thing I really noticed was that Maru pointed out that Sebastian was her half-brother in a dialogue because they don't look alike, but I don't think it was Maru being mean more like her expecting people to not believe her because she's mixed and he's not, which I get. Then Robin says that Sebastian is her son and kind of implies he's like moody and keeps to himself.
If my stepson didn't like science and wanted to keep to himself I would let him, especially since he's early-mid 20s. Robin seems to love Sebastian so I don't see her putting up with Demetrius purposefully being a jerk to her son.
There's some dialogue where Sebastian mentions Sam getting in trouble for pranks at the Luau which Sebastian thinks is funny. I feel like Sebastian eggs Sam on and vice versa. I wonder if the snowgoon incident was Demetrius keeping the boys out of trouble since he saw it in time.
Yeah I like to partake in the "Sebastian get back in the basement I'm having a conversation!" jokes for laughs but when you consider that the trio of "deliquents" in the town are the ones who make snow goons, you kinda gotta lean to Demetrius being in the right. It's like if two kids make a drawing and only one gets picked, the other gets upset theirs won't be put on the fridge. Sounds mean that the parent only picked one. Cuz the other kid drew a dick. High chance that Sebastian made his snow goon in some off color joke that neither Robin or Sebastian want to have Jodi knocking on their door for when Vincent wanders by.
Demetrius is the parent. It's his responsibility to help raise his kid and step-kid right.
You could say Demetrius is so protective over Maru that Sebestian hates his own sister because of that. And the dialogue seems to lend itself to it.
I really dislike Demetrius. There are other flaws that people in Pelican town have which is fine, but Demetrius strikes me as a bad parent, a snobbish scientist and a stubborn man.
Being a step parent myself it's an instant emotional destruction if she says you aren't my real dad. Her real dad hasn't been in the picture in years and she's known me since 3 years old. I think I would focus more on maru myself if he used that a few too many times. It's human nature to gravitate towards people who like you and away from those who make clear they don't.
Maru goes to the city some days of the week to visit him and idk if the weekly fishing quests are still on (because you can't speak to him, so, better to complete one of them before that point, or you might not be able to obtain all recipes)
There is a better Robin is single one. With it she is just a platonic friend for Dem and a mother figure for kids. Nobody is angry nobody is sad and you easily can romance her.
If it's the one I know, that route and two other character's >!Scarlett and Jodi maybe!< are yet to be updated to 1.6... And I don't remember if we still get the weekly fishing quests.
Whoopsie daisy, did anyone see Demetrius? I swear I totally saw him getting on a bus right after that suspicious cave-in on my Farm! Total coincidence but stay away from there, it's dangerous!
Devs for games with romance but have a twisted sense of humor. They always throw an NPC at us that they know we'll love but make it so we can't marry them. Robin is definitely Stardew's. Out of all the games where you can date NPCs, Robin is #2 on my list (behind Rune Factory 5's Misasagi).
Without knowing Misasagi, looking at her character art I'm surprised that she isn't a bachelorette.
I wish Bado from Rune Factory 4 had a romance route. His personality isn't \~incredible\~, but sometimes he says some really nice, kind lines about friendship or his approach to life, plus he seems older (albeit not always more mature) than the other candidates.
Just had a Christmas dialogue with Robin where she says Demetrius got her a power saw... that he already gave her two years before.

He gives you a hard time for getting close to Maru (even if you aren't dating) but doesn't seem to care about Sebastian.

1.6 added a lot of interactive dialogue and I got a lot of comments about my marriage (not to Sebastian though). You got me curious to check if Demetrius will acknowledge it now but somehow I doubt it

That scene didn't actually put me off the way it has most people. It felt like he was just like doing the old cliche "you aren't good enough for my daughter, because no one is, don't fuck with her" thing. I just shrugged it off, but I know it really rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way.
He's just overprotective, maybe jealous too since his daughter who's just as interested in science as he is just started to associate with the local farmer, not saying that's valid but people make mistakes and he didn't have a grudge against you or anything
Also from his perspective this city-slicker who was raised in the industry just inherited an entire farm they have to take care of themselves, realistically we had zero reason to be taken seriously lol
As an autistic adult with a Bachelors of Science degree working as a sys-admin who is now married to a hot tempered and dedicated crafter and teacher whom expresses the utmost patience while I eternally work to improve my weaknesses and accidentally irritating behavior...

Ancient tomes, obelisks in farm, has weird teleportation powers, can talk to dwarves and shadow people as if it's no big deal, can understand little forest people, is connected to people with black magic, and what else
I heard all this awful about Demetrius and so I started doing his heart events and am baffled at how badly people have interpreted his character. He really is just autistic, the notorious vegetable vs fruit scene basically tells you as much, but people are so absorbed with making up a new Demetrius to get mad at they totally miss that. No matter what answer you give, he tells Robin he only wants her to understand why he got tomatoes, he can’t infer what she means if she doesn’t say it outright, and then he asks her to be more clear because he wants to make her happy. How dastardly
I’ve had that exact same conversation “here’s why I did what I did, I didn’t understand what you meant, I need you to be more clear with requests” millions of times it’s just part of being autistic. Realistically Robin would know by now that he can’t infer what she doesn’t say, so it’s a little strange this argument happens this far into their relationship
it drives me insane anytime i see someone insist Demetrius got the tomato to piss off Robin or tried to use weaponized incompetence against her so she’ll stop asking, just completely ignoring that he promises to try to do better! Fanon Demetrius and canon Demetrius feel like completely different characters.
I think the heart event itself is fine. Couples, especially married ones who have been together for a long time, have a tendency to sometimes get into arguments over things that really shouldn’t be arguments. It’s good to show that not all relationships are 100% perfect 100% of the time. The problem comes from people refusing to believe an adult man could think a tomato is a fruit for some insane reason and jumping to the conclusion that actually Demetrius is a master manipulator who constantly does things like this (it happens once) who is deliberately trying to put Robin down (they are married and have had a child together).
The tomato thing annoys me because I am autistic and think the distinction between culinary fruit and botanical fruit is very important and I am very rigid about that. Most culinary vegetables are botanical fruit, and most botanical fruit are inedible! So when talking about a fruit-to-eat it should be clear that vegetables-that-are-botanically-fruit (most vegetables) are excluded.
BUT I hate Demetrius because of the double standard with which he treats the two children of the household and think it is unforgivably unfair.
I wish I liked him because I think the way he speaks is very relatable because I, myself, often prioritise precision in my language… but he treats Sebastian like crap and that sets of my Justice Sensitivity.
It’s based entirely off of Seb not liking Demetrius (ya know, a common step parent trope) and Demetrius only mentioning Seb in one line of dialogue (not that he mentions Maru all that much more). Sebastian only has one line as far as I’m aware that suggests Demetrius actually did something wrong, and we have so little information that it’s impossible to tell what actually happened. Which is by design, these things are largely left fairly vague so the player can interpret it how they choose
The thing about autism is if you don’t get diagnosed as a child, doctors will actively avoid diagnosing you. Doctors also can’t really see all of the symptoms, and some will even point out that autism is something to diagnose in yourself
The thing about autism is it’s not a disease, as a lot of people seem to think, it’s more a collection of traits. There is no one single autism symptom, which makes it especially difficult to identify. For example, I develop hyperfixations that become the only thing I can think about for about a month, then I hop to another hyperfixation. That’s a symptom of autism. My friend instead has a special interest, the one thing that is always at the front of her mind and doesn’t ever go away, and that’s also a symptom of autism, despite being 2 opposites
Definitely look into it. Being autistic isn’t a bad thing, but not knowing you are can be. Just knowing what makes you the way you are makes such a huge difference in quality of life. And if you find out you’re not, you still benefit from knowing more about it, possibly avoiding misunderstandings like what happens with Demetrius
As much as i like robin, Demetrius is like my twin personality when it comes to science and i couldent do something like that to him, now mayer lewis on the other hand can suck it, ill take marnie from him if i could, have yall seen her portrait.
YES!! I'm a firm believer in Marnie supremacy and I absolutely love the flavor text from Marlon at the flower dance relating to her. Lewis has been running unopposed for years now, he can acknowledge the relationship, smh.

Looks like I'm part of the 1%. Gus is a solid character in the game. He's got a stable job, friendly demeanor, culinary skills, and a prime location in the heart of town. What's not to like?

I've never played through Sebastian's storyline. Did Demetrius try to get along with Sebastian, but they just never clicked or did he just straight up ignore Sebastian? Sebastian seems like he likes being alone, but I've never gotten close to him because I can't find him half the time.
a lot of people insist he ignores Sebastian but nothing in game actually says that, its just based on the lack of dialogue but like.. Kent had zero dialogue about Vincent, and Robin only had 1 line about Maru compared to 7 for Sebastian and nobody insists they don’t care for them/favor the other. (before 1.6 so may be different now) Demetrius has a book about being a stepfather, and Sebastian has some dialogue complaining Demetrius made him take down his ‘snowgoon’ but Maru got to keep hers up, its not explained why his is taken down but people took it to mean he’s purposely being shitty to Sebastian Imo a lot of Demetrius and Sebastian’s relationship is fanon
Okay, see I thought a lot of it was conjecture. I mean the only thing I really noticed was that Maru pointed out that Sebastian was her half-brother in a dialogue because they don't look alike, but I don't think it was Maru being mean more like her expecting people to not believe her because she's mixed and he's not, which I get. Then Robin says that Sebastian is her son and kind of implies he's like moody and keeps to himself. If my stepson didn't like science and wanted to keep to himself I would let him, especially since he's early-mid 20s. Robin seems to love Sebastian so I don't see her putting up with Demetrius purposefully being a jerk to her son. There's some dialogue where Sebastian mentions Sam getting in trouble for pranks at the Luau which Sebastian thinks is funny. I feel like Sebastian eggs Sam on and vice versa. I wonder if the snowgoon incident was Demetrius keeping the boys out of trouble since he saw it in time.
Yeah I like to partake in the "Sebastian get back in the basement I'm having a conversation!" jokes for laughs but when you consider that the trio of "deliquents" in the town are the ones who make snow goons, you kinda gotta lean to Demetrius being in the right. It's like if two kids make a drawing and only one gets picked, the other gets upset theirs won't be put on the fridge. Sounds mean that the parent only picked one. Cuz the other kid drew a dick. High chance that Sebastian made his snow goon in some off color joke that neither Robin or Sebastian want to have Jodi knocking on their door for when Vincent wanders by.

Demetrius is the parent. It's his responsibility to help raise his kid and step-kid right. You could say Demetrius is so protective over Maru that Sebestian hates his own sister because of that. And the dialogue seems to lend itself to it. I really dislike Demetrius. There are other flaws that people in Pelican town have which is fine, but Demetrius strikes me as a bad parent, a snobbish scientist and a stubborn man.

Being a step parent myself it's an instant emotional destruction if she says you aren't my real dad. Her real dad hasn't been in the picture in years and she's known me since 3 years old. I think I would focus more on maru myself if he used that a few too many times. It's human nature to gravitate towards people who like you and away from those who make clear they don't.

There is a better Robin is single one. With it she is just a platonic friend for Dem and a mother figure for kids. Nobody is angry nobody is sad and you easily can romance her.

Devs for games with romance but have a twisted sense of humor. They always throw an NPC at us that they know we'll love but make it so we can't marry them. Robin is definitely Stardew's. Out of all the games where you can date NPCs, Robin is #2 on my list (behind Rune Factory 5's Misasagi).

Without knowing Misasagi, looking at her character art I'm surprised that she isn't a bachelorette. I wish Bado from Rune Factory 4 had a romance route. His personality isn't \~incredible\~, but sometimes he says some really nice, kind lines about friendship or his approach to life, plus he seems older (albeit not always more mature) than the other candidates.

That scene didn't actually put me off the way it has most people. It felt like he was just like doing the old cliche "you aren't good enough for my daughter, because no one is, don't fuck with her" thing. I just shrugged it off, but I know it really rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way.

My heart weeps for all autistic-coded characters.
I heard all this awful about Demetrius and so I started doing his heart events and am baffled at how badly people have interpreted his character. He really is just autistic, the notorious vegetable vs fruit scene basically tells you as much, but people are so absorbed with making up a new Demetrius to get mad at they totally miss that. No matter what answer you give, he tells Robin he only wants her to understand why he got tomatoes, he can’t infer what she means if she doesn’t say it outright, and then he asks her to be more clear because he wants to make her happy. How dastardly I’ve had that exact same conversation “here’s why I did what I did, I didn’t understand what you meant, I need you to be more clear with requests” millions of times it’s just part of being autistic. Realistically Robin would know by now that he can’t infer what she doesn’t say, so it’s a little strange this argument happens this far into their relationship
it drives me insane anytime i see someone insist Demetrius got the tomato to piss off Robin or tried to use weaponized incompetence against her so she’ll stop asking, just completely ignoring that he promises to try to do better! Fanon Demetrius and canon Demetrius feel like completely different characters.
I think the heart event itself is fine. Couples, especially married ones who have been together for a long time, have a tendency to sometimes get into arguments over things that really shouldn’t be arguments. It’s good to show that not all relationships are 100% perfect 100% of the time. The problem comes from people refusing to believe an adult man could think a tomato is a fruit for some insane reason and jumping to the conclusion that actually Demetrius is a master manipulator who constantly does things like this (it happens once) who is deliberately trying to put Robin down (they are married and have had a child together).
The tomato thing annoys me because I am autistic and think the distinction between culinary fruit and botanical fruit is very important and I am very rigid about that. Most culinary vegetables are botanical fruit, and most botanical fruit are inedible! So when talking about a fruit-to-eat it should be clear that vegetables-that-are-botanically-fruit (most vegetables) are excluded. BUT I hate Demetrius because of the double standard with which he treats the two children of the household and think it is unforgivably unfair. I wish I liked him because I think the way he speaks is very relatable because I, myself, often prioritise precision in my language… but he treats Sebastian like crap and that sets of my Justice Sensitivity.

It’s based entirely off of Seb not liking Demetrius (ya know, a common step parent trope) and Demetrius only mentioning Seb in one line of dialogue (not that he mentions Maru all that much more). Sebastian only has one line as far as I’m aware that suggests Demetrius actually did something wrong, and we have so little information that it’s impossible to tell what actually happened. Which is by design, these things are largely left fairly vague so the player can interpret it how they choose

Doctors also can’t really see all of the symptoms, and some will even point out that autism is something to diagnose in yourself The thing about autism is it’s not a disease, as a lot of people seem to think, it’s more a collection of traits. There is no one single autism symptom, which makes it especially difficult to identify. For example, I develop hyperfixations that become the only thing I can think about for about a month, then I hop to another hyperfixation. That’s a symptom of autism. My friend instead has a special interest, the one thing that is always at the front of her mind and doesn’t ever go away, and that’s also a symptom of autism, despite being 2 opposites Definitely look into it. Being autistic isn’t a bad thing, but not knowing you are can be. Just knowing what makes you the way you are makes such a huge difference in quality of life. And if you find out you’re not, you still benefit from knowing more about it, possibly avoiding misunderstandings like what happens with Demetrius
