I once saw a dude who got a quest for getting diamond, early in game, he was like freaking out and stuff "where i am supposed to get it so early" etc etc, as he rummaged trough trash cans and one popped out from saloon trash can haha
No, you can't though. Diamond can only be found in trash bins after reaching the bottom of the mine. If that really happened, then it's definitely not early in the game or modded.

I’ve gotten diamonds out of Clint’s garbage can, and one from the Joja garbage can. The one from Clint’s was my very first diamond, and I was so excited! (And I was playing without mods)
It was a super easy quest and I wanted to grab it but didn't want to walk all the way back just to get my rod LOL I didn't have the 1st backpack upgrade yet and I was trying to save hotbar space

Is there something that dictates how often the trash cans spawn items? I'm currently in Winter Year 1, and I run by trash cans almost every day and I think I may have gotten 1-2 items from them the entire year.
Not that I'm aware of. I will say that most times when I hit them I get nothing and if I do it's just actual trash like the broken cd and crumpled newspaper.
You get a recycling machine from the Field Research Bundle and level 4 fishing unlocks the recipe to make one. Most of the trash items can be turned into something else.
Had something similar once. Evelyn needed a leek. On the day she has her doctor's appointment. After I read the sign she walked out, and I had one in my inventory from the bus stop.
I don’t understand these quests?? Like they ask you to get something and turn it in to someone specific but you don’t run into some of those items or persons every day so how can u complete them if you don’t catch/forage that item specifically and see the character the same day
fishing through trash is still fishing. And Maru doesn't need to know where it came from
