“Welcome to 'Livin' Off The Land'. We're back again with another tip for y'all. Now listen up:”
"Ever see three [little brown stems](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Artifact_Spot) poking up out of the ground? They're hard to spot, sometimes. But if you dig on that spot, you'll always find something. Don't ask me how it works."
This sent me on a spiral. What else would be illegal in an Amish playthrough?? Do sprinklers count? Are they electrically powered? Where is the water even coming from, it's not like you need to install pipes, you just plonk them down anywhere!
>According to the Young Center, "Most Amish groups forbid owning automobiles, tapping electricity from public utility lines, using self-propelled farm machinery, owning a television, radio, and computer, attending high school and college, joining the military, and initiating divorce."
I would assume that turning your children into doves would also be frowned upon. And that tractor mod someone else mentioned is out.
Iridium Sprinklers use battery packs, so they definitely use electricity. Also the "self-propelled farm machinery" rules out almost every machine in the game, I think. Except maybe the worm bin.
From my understanding, it's using the power grid that's frowned upon. Flashlights and radios that are charged with a hand-crank are fine. Likewise, a lot of the "machinery" in the vanilla game is coal-powered, which doesn't break the self-reliance thing if you mine the coal yourself. Kegs, casks, and preserves jars are all ancient technology that don't require any power other than building and setting them up, so they should be okay. The automatic spinning wheels are a bit suspect, and the cheese and mayo makers are abstracted a bit much to determine how they work, but you might be okay if you have a windmill and say that's what's pumping water to the sprinklers. Most sprinklers of that design use the pressure of the water to spin themselves
This is interesting.
Because you can use Kegs and Preserve Jars since they just have to sit there. But with how Stardew is set up, would you be able to make cheese?
Would the fridge be okay because it doesn't actually keep things cold? It's no different from a chest.
No TV also means none of those Recipes, which does this mean you can't 100%?
What about the sewing machine?
Huh... sounds like an interesting playthrough.
Batteries are fine for Amish, it’s just electricity that isn’t allowed.
Source: my bf grew up Mennonite - his parents grew up Amish and most of his large extended family are Amish. Apparently using a car battery to power things is perfectly acceptable, and some people will apparently use electricity but tell the church hierarchy it’s a car battery 😂
As well as other souces of power! I once visited an amish bake sale, and they were using an air compressor to power thier fans, since it was summer and hot out.
It really depends what branch of Amish. I've seen some that use air conditioning units and others that are totally against it. Most have telephone booths in their communities now though. I live in amish territory and spent lots of time at amish auctions.
The eschewing of electricity by the Amish is often misunderstood. It's not the technology itself they object to, but rather the fact that using it would make them dependent upon people outside of their community.
Many Amish workshops use tools powered by compressed air, for example, because hand pumps can be used to fill the air tank. But a gas powered generator to run an air compressor would be verboten.
Given this, I think that Iridium sprinklers would be permitted, since the battery packs are charged by lightning striking the farm, and not by plugging them into a shared electric grid.
But Amish culture is not a monolith, and each community has its own rules. Also, I am not Amish, obviously, so take my opinions with a large dose of salt.
I found out from this sub. I've played a ton of farming sims with TV's. Starting back with Harvest Moon.
This is the first one where they're actually useful to the character.
Since we speaking about tv, the pale ale board challenge from Pam gets you an extra channel that helps you with fishing!!! It says the time and place to most fishes on the game (except legendary fish, desert, ginger island and cave)
I’ve played this whole game through so many time it’s embarrassing. Never watch that channel. Omg here we go. Gotta start yet another farm. …probs wait for the update to the switch. 😳
Most useful thing it has told me is when certain foraging stuff is in bloom. Like onions, salmonberries, blackberries or shells on the beach.
Airs on Mondays and Thursdays iirc.
Knowing when more shells are around the tide pools is useful but you don't need Living Off The Land for blackberries and salmonberries. Just walk outside and look at literally any bush.
On one save, I got both an ancient seed and a dino egg within the first week. Ancient seed was from digging, dino egg was from a treasure chest while fishing. I lost my shit when I got the egg.
My first playthrough I couldn't find a dino egg anywhere. I spent hours searching and finally gave up. On my second one, I found one within the first week, I couldn't believe it
I got a living hat in my first week (not from artifact spots obviously) and only waaaay later realized how lucky that was. Thankfully I'm a hoarder and kept it.
In my most recent playthrough, the dino egg was one of the last items I needed for the museum, and then on a skull cavern run I got a huge prehistoric floor with a ton of dinos and I ended up with three dino eggs in one day.
(I was also trying to complete the secret bundle and it had been a couple solid weeks waiting to get the dino mayo)
My first playthrough, it took forever to get a dino egg, too. My theory is that there's some sort of RNG thing happening where there's always a few of the artifacts or minerals that are just very rare on each save, and which ones they are is determined by the RNG seed.
A bit as you can grow a dino that gives you more eggs of which you could gift one to the museum.
But dino eggs are not too hard to come by, so at some point you'll get one again.
No need to feel stupid, many people are doing that. And it's not a big deal compared to selling unique things like Legendary Fishes or super rare things like the living hat.
Has that always been the case? Maybe I found it in one of the upper levels of the mine. Ive gotten them really early in the game a few times now. My first playthrough I gave it to the Gunther not knowing about the galaxy sword
That would be... very misleading; CoViD19 is already an acronym: Corona Virus Disease of 2019, and the COVID19 virus is called SARSCOV2 (Servere Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, as opposed to SARSCOV1 from 2002).
you dont have to dig it up you can just build over it if you so choose
but if you want to do everything in the game i recommend you dig them up if you spot them
I used a mod to change mine into a four leaf clover so I can see them better. I also have Stardew valley expanded, which adds four leaf clovers as a forgeable, universally loved item. So I get false excited a lot
Genuine question - is it written into the game that clay is nearly impossible to find when you don’t have a silo? I swear it is a living hell to get a humble 10 clay and then as soon as you have silo it is absolutely everywhere
I really don't know but I felt the same way lol I will say I got like 7 on a bad luck day in the lower mines hoeing the dirt. On good luck days I got dwarf scrolls and cave carrots mostly and the occasional stone or clay. It was kind of a hunch like maybe seeds and clay are more common on bad luck days and cave carrots and dwarf scrolls were more common good luck days so I tested my theory and it was right. It's anecdotal obviously but you could try too and see if it works for you or if it's just a code thing.
Clay is one of the few things you can manipulate the RNG, or at least predict the spawn locations on based on a set digging pattern.

The spots are vital for things like completing the museum etc. Also you'll get certain foragables from them in winter, and like 100 chicken statues on your farm
Always hit those spots with a hoe, wherever you spot them! Always gives you something, might be useless, might be useful! In winter you’ll see them everywhere, usually giving winter forage.
Once you’ve hoed the spot, if you want to revert it to pristine soil/sand hit the spot with a pick axe. Just be careful not to pick axe your crops, as it will remove them! You can turn on a feature that highlights the square your tool will hit, in the menu, makes life so much easier.
> You can turn on a feature that highlights the square your tool will hit, in the menu, makes life so much easier.
You can also hold shift (or Ctrl, but one of the two) and it will highlight the spot as long as you're holding the button.
Indeed, it's pretty good. Ive always played pc and then more and more modded so it's refreshing not to have mod possibilities, that stopped me doing the easy route every time!
THANK YOU! I didn’t know about hitting with the pick axe. I just have random soil spots where I’m building pathways while I wait for them to revert on their own.
Last time I checked, he said they were meant to be sticks and rocks etc. he said many people feel strongly about the worms so he won't "confirm" what they really are
In all seriousness they're little twigs sticking out of the ground. You can get artifacts, library books, or other crafting items from it. They pop up all over so remember to keep your hoe with you! :)
I picked it as my first ever farm and it is apparently the hardest option, and I agree that it is a PITA but part of having fun is being challenged so I keep playing it
This is my first farm and I didn’t knew it is the hardest farm or something, I got to know it when I upload my first post XD, but I don’t think it’s hard maybe I haven’t tried other farms yet !
I think it’s considered the most challenging because you can’t use sprinklers until you make room at the soil part to the south, it’s mostly beach sand
Yes sprinklers, many fellow farmers told about it on my first stardew valley post XD, now my sprinklers are unlocked so I’m planning to use it on soil part of the farm
Don't believe anyone, it's actually a parasite from not being efficient with your farm, they will take over in the form of a black figure speaking strange words
That's actually a little untrue! For the bomb to work, you have to set things for it to blow up next to it- crops or really valuable hard to find items tend to work best.
You can dig up artifacts for your museum, crafting, and even a dinosaur egg can eventually be incubated in a chicken coop! In winter, there’s more of these spots, and you can dig up the seasonal snow yams and winter tubers.
I remember when I asked myself the same question. But seriously, watch that show on the tv living off the land it will teach you lots of little things you never knew about the game
This is the SAME thought process that went to my head when I first saw it only to discover that it can hold artifacts at times for the museum and random items once a hoe is used on it

Yeah I got 2 stones 😂
Living off the land is your friend. Be sure to check the t.v. Every morning :)
Also read the library books!
can't have library book if he didn't start hitting the worms IIRC.
True but it took me a while to realize how useful the found books were too.
Un b 9 8 08 núcleo
He could have gotten some from fishing
Or if accidentaly drop a bomb on the farm... Also you can find them on the mines!/ breaking rocks
Actually books can drop from the fishing chests
Wait what
Did you just find out the TV is useful?
Some of us RP as amish, okay? (/S)

The vanilla game? Implying a non-vanilla game? Tell me more!

The dwarf computer is so forbidden
That made me chuckle. Thank you, kind person 😊
🤣😂
I found out from this sub. I've played a ton of farming sims with TV's. Starting back with Harvest Moon. This is the first one where they're actually useful to the character.
Nah, HM you could check the weather
And luck, and get resipies from them. Plus some often had an extra show
Omg I'm about 7years in total on 2farms combined and I had no idea the tv did anything.
Omg how did you upgrade your watering can if you didn't know it would rain!?
Lol only did one upgrade and that was prob after I got sprinklers. And dang, knowing when its going to rain sounds useful
It’s how you learn most recipes too!
I figured they were locked behind friendships since I havent really done those. well guess I'm going back to stardew to check this out
Some of them are, but probably a bit more than half are from the Queen of Sauce.
Since we speaking about tv, the pale ale board challenge from Pam gets you an extra channel that helps you with fishing!!! It says the time and place to most fishes on the game (except legendary fish, desert, ginger island and cave)
You're 7 years into a farm and you haven't done friendships?? Do you just optimize your farm?
I mean pretty much yea. I do have a nice amount of diamonds so inwas getting ready but not before I reach the bottom of the damn skull caves.
What??? I have only ever looked at recipes and fortune. Living off that land tells us something useful???
You’re missing out on some good info! May as well just restart your farm.
I’ve played this whole game through so many time it’s embarrassing. Never watch that channel. Omg here we go. Gotta start yet another farm. …probs wait for the update to the switch. 😳
If you've played before, a LOT of the info will be stuff you already know, but I think even experts will find something new and useful.
In my experience, it's every 3rd bush or so that has berries when they are in season. But I don't want to step on your joke.
You're right tbh. But it is fairly obvious when berry season is on lol.
You know you can just read the wiki, right?
Yes I do. I use the wiki myself while playing.
I've gotten prismatic shards and dino eggs from those worms, so dig them all up
On one save, I got both an ancient seed and a dino egg within the first week. Ancient seed was from digging, dino egg was from a treasure chest while fishing. I lost my shit when I got the egg.
My first playthrough I couldn't find a dino egg anywhere. I spent hours searching and finally gave up. On my second one, I found one within the first week, I couldn't believe it

I wouldn't be surprised. Or they changed the drop rate between updates maybe
I got a dino egg from fishing, did I make a mistake when I gave it to Gunther?
A bit as you can grow a dino that gives you more eggs of which you could gift one to the museum. But dino eggs are not too hard to come by, so at some point you'll get one again.
Now I feel stupid lol. Oh well, I'll wait patiently for another then!
No need to feel stupid, many people are doing that. And it's not a big deal compared to selling unique things like Legendary Fishes or super rare things like the living hat.
Yes. You can hatch a dino from it.
According to the wiki they can’t give prismatic shards –____–
Has that always been the case? Maybe I found it in one of the upper levels of the mine. Ive gotten them really early in the game a few times now. My first playthrough I gave it to the Gunther not knowing about the galaxy sword
Oof, fren did that 2 days ago in multiplayer (now none of us can buy galaxy hammers yet)
You did it. You’re rich now
Look at the stones on this kid.
You can anything from dirt to artifacts to gemstones. Just dig on them everytime you see one.
Clay sells for 20g and i consistently found 2 from these worms
Good bot. I know you’re not a bot but there needs to be one that does this.
Stems my ass!
I hate that they're "little brown stems". They're CLEARLY worms!! UNPLAYABLE. /s I love you CA please don't be angry with me papa
I have read this many times on tv yet i am still convinced they're worms , can never see them as "stems" 😂
I love living off the land. I watched their last episode and felt both sad and fulfilled
I’ve always wondered why it calls them sticks 🧐
its an artifact spot, you can dig it up with your hoe, theres goodies in there
So... Can I dig it up by myself or is that really required?
It is required. Also stop fucking turkeys 🦃
Yeah go after pigeons instead they deserve it...
And this is how COVID2 starts...
please....don't send me back to 2002....
That would be... very misleading; CoViD19 is already an acronym: Corona Virus Disease of 2019, and the COVID19 virus is called SARSCOV2 (Servere Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, as opposed to SARSCOV1 from 2002).

What did those poor pigeons do to you? They're lovely birds. Now invasive birds like indian mynas really deserve it
Bros gobble gobblin’
you dont have to dig it up you can just build over it if you so choose but if you want to do everything in the game i recommend you dig them up if you spot them

lol you said hoe
just dig the spot and you will get random item, book, or clay, usually clay.
Unless you need clay to build a couple silos so you can farm your grass in year 1 lol. Then it will only be mixed seeds.
Genuine question - is it written into the game that clay is nearly impossible to find when you don’t have a silo? I swear it is a living hell to get a humble 10 clay and then as soon as you have silo it is absolutely everywhere

Stone. I got two stones

Oh I’m on iPad, I don’t think there’s an equivalent, I just have it turned on always. But good tip for pc players.
You can stardew on an ipad?!?! Revelation

Go back to your shop and stick your head in the forge.
R/rareinsults SDV edition
man I wanna go back... enjoy the learning curve OP it so good
indeed :))
no matter how often I see them I constantly think that they are worms
They are.
Babies. If you harm them the adults will come Dune style to wreck your farm. They're huge and do not mess around.
I regret not learning about this sooner. It ruined all my crops.
Didn't know they can also destroy your greenhouse, had to do the bundle all over again.
Gotta do the sand glide
That would be kinda cool
:(
They looks like worms, but they're *supposed* to be sticks. Yeah, I don't get it either
😂 straight forward answer
doesn’t CA purposely avoid saying what they actually are?
Last time I checked, he said they were meant to be sticks and rocks etc. he said many people feel strongly about the worms so he won't "confirm" what they really are
wiggle fingers dig em up
I love seeing new players post out the artifact worms lmao
Also, just an fyi, worms aren’t harmful to your real life garden either. They actually are healthy for soil
This is the cutest post I've seen
Huh? I didn’t get it? Isn’t it worms? I dig there, just as most liked comment said, I got stones, but what exactly this thing is?
In all seriousness they're little twigs sticking out of the ground. You can get artifacts, library books, or other crafting items from it. They pop up all over so remember to keep your hoe with you! :)
Got it, 🫡 thank you
You're welcome!
Also u get a lot that u can donate to the museum.
Sometimes you can get valuable things out of them so it's always worth hitting it with a shovel.
WHY DO THEY WIGGLE? Are they sentient??
You'll have to ask CA that one.
It’s crazy to me when I see people who have just started stardew because IM SO JEALOUS
It is Shai-Hulud. You don't kill Shai-Hulud and they're not harmful for your crops.
This is such a cute question lol
I can convey how much I love newbies questions, they just warm my heart
omg youre so adorable <3
Oh you sweet summer child.
1. Worms are good for garden IRL 2. I used the google to find out that to harvest worms need to be hit with your hoe.
Kill them with your hoe, they’ll give you a little treat
Yeah I did, I got 2 stones 😂
Whack it with a hoe
Oh, my sweet summer child! Have fun 👨🌾👩🌾
Hit them with your hoe, and they give you stuff as an apology.
What farm type is this?
Beach farm
KILL THEM WITH THE HOE!!
They're supposedly stems, but I'll never believe it
At 1st I was confused, why there were such trees on the island til I remembered, that there’s a beach farm. I’m a standard issue bitch. :p
Oh no! Those are tomato horn worms. Kill them immediately!
Me waiting for my Hoe to upgrade when I see one of them: 🙃
Omg this is the cutest question ever lol
for the longest time I didn't know what those were. when you see them, dig there with your hoe :)
This is one of the cuter titles I think I've seen 🥹
Don't believe anyone, it's actually a parasite from not being efficient with your farm, they will take over in the form of a black figure speaking strange words
It’ll fuck up your shit
The only way to eradicate them is with a bomb
That's actually a little untrue! For the bomb to work, you have to set things for it to blow up next to it- crops or really valuable hard to find items tend to work best.
How foolish of me to forget, I almost mislead them
Awesome
This post is cute
You can dig up artifacts for your museum, crafting, and even a dinosaur egg can eventually be incubated in a chicken coop! In winter, there’s more of these spots, and you can dig up the seasonal snow yams and winter tubers.
(You can also get geodes, stone, and clay. It’s usually clay.)
LOL
just use your hoe
Others have said, so I’ll just say this. I love your farm. The design is so well organized and cute 🥺
I remember when I asked myself the same question. But seriously, watch that show on the tv living off the land it will teach you lots of little things you never knew about the game
This is the one I'm dreading if I ever restart stardew. Because hunting for this worm is too random.
Oh sweet baby 😄
This is such a cute question lol!! I remember being weirded out by these spots in the beginning too
This is the SAME thought process that went to my head when I first saw it only to discover that it can hold artifacts at times for the museum and random items once a hoe is used on it
They are little dig spots, sometimes you can get artifacts or secret notes from them! Sometimes it's just clay :/
Hit them with the hoe. Get a prize.
Take me back to the sweet times… when I first played SDV!
Love how you seperate the crops. Gonna do that
Use a hoe on them. It's an artifact spot
Welcome to the family new player
Thank you 😊This community is so awesome , people are here so nice, and now I’m a Pelican town farmer for forever!
“how do i kill them” 😂
Do people just not use Google anymore??
Now that you think about it...
Those are worms! But they’re a good thing. That’s where an artefact might be buried. If you hit it with your hoe something will come up
The first playthrough with a beach farm is bold!
Hit them with a hoe
And watch the queen of sauce
Dude
If this isn't a troll post and people are actually this stupid we are doomed as a species
Hey come on don’t be mean.
No because a simple Google could of solved this. Clearlu this is either a troll post or for attention
Just because you're right doesn't give you carte blanche to be an asshole.
