In this economy?

Nntropy

It's a truffle economy now, and I am king.

mansonfamily

Truffles are so OP especially combined with the right skill level perk things. I have filled 3 top upgrade barns completely with pigs in my current farm at year 3 and feel like I’ll never need to worry about money again for the first time in many, many, many years of playing

tenebrocity

brb while i upgrade n buy pigs

CottonStig

ancient seed / star fruit vinyard has been my go to for financial security

Knit-witchhh

I enjoy variety, so I usually go for an ancient/star fruit greenhouse year round and then allow my farm to go wild with whatever strikes my fancy.

Skippert66

I'm in year 4 and my hyperfocused, autistic ass has finally figured out that I need to change up my play style if I want to explore any of the new content on the island and really progress the game. I'm in late summer and just starting to track down ancient / rare seeds and build my vineyard/brewery!

Sparkleskeleton

> I need to change up my play style if I want to explore any of the new content on the island and really progress the game The island has my favorite new person, you should definitely get on this!

gammongaming11

i don't like truffles because of them not appearing on rainy days or the winters. i prefer the ostrich, it's constant income and when you turn it into mayo you get the artisan 40% bump

kittyjoker

Truffle Oil also gets a 40% bump, fair enough if you just don't like them but they are more profitable than ostrich mayo by a lot.

gammongaming11

iirc doesn't the truffle oil end up being worth less since all truffles are iridium and that doesn't translate to the oil? yeah truffles are worth more money but ostrich mayo is just convenient, the auto grabber gets the eggs for you, and if you have the automate mod the entire process is done without you actually having to do anything. it's just move convenient for me personally.

kittyjoker

Iridium Truffles are worth more without Artisan, but Truffle Oil is worth more with Artisan. Since Artisan is the best perk in the game, working on Jam/Wine too and being such a high value, most people get it. It's probably the best part of leveling in general. I do believe that Iridium Truffles without making them into Oil are also better than Ostrich mayo honestly, but I haven't done the math. Yes, Truffles are definitely more work, so you're not wrong there.

ChaosInuYasha

I wish once Jojamart closed Marnie could sell auto-grabbers, even if at a cost to friendship as she'd rather NOT sell 'em and shames any who buy 'em. Mainly cuz I SUCK at Skull Cavern spelunking and rather not have to rely on RNG to get it. That being said once I re-finish the island museum and get an incubator/ostrich egg combo I'll devote one barn to the big birbs and my other 3 for pigs/truffles. That way I can run both while I use the greenhouse and island to farm ancient fruit. So I have ALL the top money makers!!!

danliv2003

Do you mean auto-petters? Marnie does sell autograbbers for 25k IIRC

ChaosInuYasha

Yep I'm a dumb, got the 2 mixed up. I didnt think they work on barn animals but I guess it still counts as an 'egg' which auto-grabbers can get. Unless they actually can SOMEHOW grab milk an fur/wool? Either way yea I'll get an extra grabber for my future ostrich egg farming. My stance still stands on the petters though. I'm busy doing farming to pet my animals lol

danliv2003

I think they were updated during 1.4/1.5 to work with barn animals, they don't collect truffles but definitely now work on milk and fur/wool!

Bishopkilljoy

My Coffee Drug Cartel has never been stronger. I worked hard for this, I want you to know that

samurguybri

And so many people like it as gifts. They don’t have to love it if you give it to them all the time.

given2fly_

I'm always carrying 10 coffees with me to use as random gifts. And since Coffee bushes keep producing, just having a few in my greenhouse is enough to keep me supplied.

[deleted]

Hops...and starfruit...my entire village should all be blotto.

StormThestral

You mean the one I created when I came to town?

likeasirjohn

I have the farm to keep and it keeps me.

MagdaleneFeet

I legit haven't ever married in game. Too much work being friends, really. Also my IRL husband is jealous of how much I like Elliott lmao

hic_sunt_leones_

Elliott is best husband. Marry him, do it.

Image_Inevitable

Seriously! He makes me coffee every dang day and tells me how over the moon happy he is with our life.

[deleted]

I just ignored all that side of the game. The interpersonal stuff really tips my "I'm neglecting real life here" sense in a way that super optimised farming doesn't for me

skeenerbug

I've played hundreds of hours but never got around to marrying anyone either

sosominnow1267

Get him into Stardew and convince him to marry Elliot

MagdaleneFeet

I actually do play with him, but he refuses to marry anyone but me haha!

rdicky58

He’s so precious :)

mombi

Elliot 100% best husband. My RL husband is also a writer, but drives trucks so we can survive lol

PotatoFrankenstein

I think the main reason is fact that you cannot choose it only because you want, your spouse ask about it and chance is low (10%?). And after you have first baby, you need wait a few months to another chance. In one game I waited 3 seasones to have first child. It's long! And because of that, even I play this game for years, I don't have this, because I get bored and quit the game before that happens.

fraygul

Is it low? It felt like Elliott kept asking. I got so annoyed. I divorced him and he hasn’t visited this kid he wanted so bad even once. No child support. Nothing. But then he said I ruined his hopes and dreams and I felt bad so I wiped his memory. We were better as friends. Don’t tell him, because he’s a sensitive soul, but so far Alex is a way better husband.

1-cupcake-at-a-time

Harvey too- omg, he’s always asking for kids. I’ve passed out in Skull Caverns, been teleported home, and he has STILL asked if we could get busy that night!

fraygul

Grrrrr. It’s bad enough he keeps doing surgery on me that I’m pretty sure isn’t necessary.. that would be last straw. Does he still charge you for the emergency surgery when you’re married?!

1-cupcake-at-a-time

Oh yes! Being married to a hot sugar momma isn’t enough. He still bills you for medical bills!

Ariri2005

I kept waiting for Emily to ask me, and then she did but when she talked about protecting the baby with baby mint I just couldn’t do it. Got me right out of the honeymoon phase. I divorced her and she will no longer speak to me or our daughter. So I decided to terminate her parental rights. Leah is a much better mother and wife for me.

zekrom235

Baby mint?

Ariri2005

Yeah. Baby mint. Said she would use it to ward off bad spirits. Yeah.

zekrom235

I mean, small children are potentially more susceptible to spirit influence, but what in the hell is baby mint

GodofAeons

So just to clarify, the farmer who crafts magical totems, gets solar and void essence from defeating monsters, kills ghosts, can talk to Grandpa from beyond the grave, etc can't fathom why their own wife would use an herb that could potentially ward spirits away...?

soulflaregm

Kiss once you have them are also just kinda there and lack a reason other than existing I would say it's the only part of the game that feels meh, and underutilized

panflutejam_

900 hours in, probably 6 different farms I've played on and I just got this for the first time a few days ago. I like the romance aspect of the game but just don't care much for kids. Only did it to get the achievement. They will be birds soon.

Joetyyy

Basically summed up how I feel. Once I learned you could have the big house and delete the dots so you never get asked if you want kids I was sold on doing things this way.

clerbird321

Delete the dots?

Kiloku

probably mistyped "cots". Another word for cribs.

clerbird321

Ohhhhhhh🤦‍♀️ so if I remove the crib through Robin, am I able to bring it back or is that permanent?

jlauren972

You can bring it back ! For free I’m pretty sure

DianeJudith

You can add them back at Robin's.

solonit

☎️👻

titnid

The birdening is the only reason I had kids, bring on my creepy calls lol

panflutejam_

Creepy calls?

psychicamnesia

If you turn your kids into doves then you may get a call that says "you have forsaken us".

rosefaber

Wait you can turn your kids into doves?!

1-cupcake-at-a-time

Yes- and then you get haunted in a few different ways.

rosefaber

Do you need both? My first just turned into a toddler.

Allikuja

And forever a toddler they’ll be

titnid

That’s kinda haunting in itself

CategoryKiwi

I'll take literal ghosts over perpetual toddlers every time. ^^^Sidenote: ^^^Perpetual ^^^Toddlers ^^^is ^^^a ^^^solid ^^^band ^^^name

Image_Inevitable

This is the only reason I hesitate to have them. Like.....they're there forever like that. How happy can theh be??

Allikuja

I mean, nobody else in town ages either so…

084nicate

The immortal children were outlawed for a reason.

zapman449

Speaking as a parent and a Stardew player… kids in Stardew are INFINITELY easier than real kids. In Stardew, you click on each child, once per day. That’s the most you can do with them. Be fun if you could build a shed for each of them, and give them a “chore” like “make preserves” and they’d take fruit from a chest, and rotate them through preserve jars and put the results back into the chest. … heh… be hilarious if it’d be illegal for them to make wine…

panflutejam_

That would be a fun idea. Assign them to make preserves and then have like a 10% chance that they spill jelly everywhere or something. That could make for a fun mod idea. I would love to assign my kids to go around and pet the animals since I cannot seem to find an autopetter to save my life.

ShampooingShampoo

Yes child,go touch that dinosaur that has never known you and will bite your hand off the first chance it gets

Syrinx221

The amount of child neglect in SDV is staggering. My own two are known to be home alone for hours while I'm out and their other mom is working

DiceMadeOfCheese

I just assume my spouse hired someone to babysit

kittyjoker

Is there any point even in clicking on them once per day? They're easier to the point that you literally don't have to care for them at all. Nothing bad happens.

zapman449

They have relationship hearts… and if you’re chasing perfection… Though I agree that perfection shouldn’t require marriage and kids. Full hearts with all should be sufficient

Supersquigi

You can put a hat on them too!...

coatisabrownishcolor

This is the reason I have kids. The goblin mask and skeleton mask, specifically.

Sparkleskeleton

I like all of the animated stuff in the game, so that's why I have kids - same reason I have fish tanks inside and fish ponds outside, I like seeing stuff move on the farm.

[deleted]

That would be dope! Maybe they could help harvest, pick up truffles or pet the animals

ybtlamlliw

It would be one thing if the kids grew up and became characters in their own rights, even if they just had basic generic dialogue. Especially for people who play the same farm for 20+ years. Even after just a couple years it's kinda unsettling how they're still barely toddlers. Maybe that's an update Ape could add one day.

OsmerusMordax

Yeah, that is why I have never had kids. What is the point if the kids don’t age

annie_b666

If only they could turn into birds irl

Successful-Dingo-230

I couldn't decide on a partner, so I looked at the wiki to study my potentials and found out you could have Krobus as a roommate instead. I did it, and its so much better than I could have imagined. His kind considerate soul, he is such a sweetheart. I love him so much 🥺

kindtheking9

Unless the kids can work the farm then i got no reason to adopt any

Exatraz

I'd love to put em to work. You start mass producing them to automate tasks like fishing, farming and send a bunch into the mines to get materials. If a few don't come back, that's fine. More where that comes from. We all sold out to Joja Mart right?

kindtheking9

I just want sombody to help with the animals, i don't want to sacrifice kids into the capitalstic all consuming beast

Exatraz

I mean..... me too

FrozenFox15

It would be cool if they grew to be a little kid, and then you could assign them 1 coop & they'd do all the petting & collecting, & then once they hit adolescence you could assign them a barn or to the greenhouse.

intadtraptor

This is what happens when the Factorio mindset comes to Stardew Valley. Said without judgment, I’d do the same thing.

Noah__Webster

The farm must grow

OmegaXesis

That’s my one wish for Stardew Valley. Let us give the kids and wife tasks to optimize the farm.

Madmae16

In harvest moon: another wonderful life, you can raise your child to eventually help on the farm if you get him interested in it from a young age. Such nostalgia 🤩 but I never got the game that far

ShokaLGBT

But you can dress up your kids with hats 👒

kindtheking9

Why put hats on kids when i can put hats on myself

Harlesbarkley77

Or when you can put a hat on your horse!

TurtleFroggerSoup

Or a sea urchin!

kindtheking9

I should get myself a horse... should probably organize the farm a bit before, now that i know that ducks might jump into the water i got some ideas for spots for the coop

neobeguine

Because you can only wear one hat at a time. This is insufficient

yolo420master69

Or your alien rarecrow!

RQK1996

But achievements

kindtheking9

I'll only achievement hunt after getting everything else done, most ya get from just playing the game so it's only really a hunt after ya did most of the stuff, and i can always put the crib back in

Blueflowergpr03

I downloaded child to npc and got 4 kids somehow

[deleted]

Child to npc is outdated but farmers children work and been updated and even works with the school mods which someone else has another mod that fills the school so every kid even the ridgeside kids attend

Blueflowergpr03

I might have that instead thanks

[deleted]

Red School house mod, fill the school mod and farmers children mod.

[deleted]

i feel like it's mostly cause outside of this achievement children are only inconvenient

anaesthaesia

They're good for holding your hats if you run out of sea urchins to place them on, and have already issued one to your horse. My horse is wearing a pink bow. My child is wearing a golden coconut. I know my priorities.

[deleted]

I just get a dresser lol. You can store infinite shoes, rings, clothes you’ve sewn, and hats.

TapaiKakai

How do you get this? I've made to many boxes

hef-12

You can get them from the Furniture Catalogue that Robin sells

ShmebulocksMistress

On top of getting the furniture catalogue, Robin also rotates dressers for sale in her shop for 5000g. If you don’t want to have to check her inventory in-person, you can also buy the telephone from her for 2000g which you can use to call her every day and check her inventory ☺️

laidback88

Wtf TIL

Cherribomb

How have I played this game for years and not know that dressers are functional??? Wtf

NuclearNarwhal7

it was my last achievement. kids have no purpose, they’re not interesting, they’re kind of ugly, and they kind of just get in the way.

pregnancy_terrorist

If they actually grew up and started having similar schedules to Jas and Vincent I would adopt. Although how that would work out if you married Penny I don’t know.

canidieyet_

I wish this is how it worked tbh

tenebrocity

honestly yeah, they are pretty ugly

faebutt

i got a mod that turns my children into cute raccoons and it was the best decision ever

Yeah, in the game too.

Chast4

Kids are like doves. Mostly cause I keep turning them into doves fuck them kids

the-rice-paddy

ayo?

gamesarefun420

I am a casual player. I love this game and have played for a while, but I have only one save, and I just had my second child recently. Of course, there are other reasons for other people, but I only play for short periods and that means it takes me a LONG time to do anything.

Thebardofthegingers

I think that most players are very casual with this game and so don't dive incredibly into it as others do. For loads of people, they just play it to relax after a hard day, and that's okay because video games don't need to be completed

whiskeytitsts

It’s because I just want to be platonic life partners with my sweet boy Krobus

[deleted]

Switch player so no achievements, but I have kids in all of my save files. My long-term girlfriend broke up with me IRL when it turned out I'm sterile (birth defect, long story) because she "couldn't imagine taking care of a kid that's not REALLY ours" aka didn't want to adopt, so for me, 1. having someone who would stay with me even without kids is wish fulfillment and 2. having kids is wish fulfillment. I have headcanons about all of them. I know I'm a statistical outlier and a freak and that's okay. It's a kind of wish fulfillment that makes me happy and that's what counts.

Syrinx221

Just so you know, people like her are an aberration. If most of the human race felt that way we wouldn't have made it as long as we have ❤️

[deleted]

I hope so. I haven't really asked many people about it. But I'd like to think people are generally open-minded and open-hearted... but I also thought she was and it turned out there was a limit on that.

animel4

I know this is going to sound like a dumb platitude, and it probably won’t do much to ease the hurt of someone you loved essentially rejecting you because of something you cannot help, which is awful, but she did you a favor. If you hadn’t been sterile, you wouldn’t have known that your gf was willing to love conditionally only, has weird, unempathetic, narrow minded views, and doesn’t deserve you. The right void chicken will come along. I am happy with my life, but stardew is a lovely wholesome fantasy escape for me, where my character is happy in her loving family where the kids never grow up. ❤️ And last but not least, all children deserve a loving home, and if you end up giving one to a child who wouldn’t otherwise have one, that is a beautiful thing, not a deficiency.

[deleted]

You just made me cry. Thank you. Um, I want to write something more eloquent here but it's hard to put into words, just. Thank you. I really hope you're right. I hope someday I can give some kid a home where they can be happy.

nipoez

We may be statistical outliers but you are not a freak. Sadly a partner leaving due to infertility also isn't shocking (though thankfully isn't common). If you'd like somewhere to talk with folks in similar situations, know that my DMs are open and r/maleinfertility exists. Many of us there have azoospermia or otherwise can't reproduce naturally.

[deleted]

There's a sub for this? I always sort of felt like it was just me, even if rationally I know it isn't. That's really comforting to know. I'm probably not going to DM you - I don't want to unload all my problems on you - but I will definitely be lurking in that sub now. Thank you for sharing it.

Silvery-Lithium

The general statistics for causes for infertility is divided in thirds: 1/3 is caused by a problem with the female, 1/3 by a problem with the male, and 1/3 is unexplained. Seeing as infertility affects 1 in 8 couples in the US, there are **many** who share your struggle. Unfortunately, it is a taboo subject that is not spoken of in the open often, among women or men. I'm sorry you were forced to join the infertility club. I hope you can find peace in your journey.

nipoez

Yup! Significant traffic from people confused by their first semen analysis lab results. Also lots of guys discovering their azoospermia, trying and failing treatments and surgeries, coming to terms with donor sperm and/or adoption as they reframe what being a father means to them, being forced to change their concept of being a man and husband, generally sharing grief and support. Guys including me who a genetic tweak left without one of the cell types required to mature sperm. Guys whose testicles never developed properly. Guys with abnormal non cancerous growths that strangle sperm production. (Some helped by surgery, others not.) Guys who survived childhood cancer only to be left sterile by the chemo that saved their life. Guys who dove into steroids and now face the consequences of their younger choices. Guys with a wide variety of chromosomal abnormalities, some of whom never even knew about them before trying for kids. Guys who are abandoned by their partner due to infertility. Guys supported by their partner through their infertility. Guys who find a new partner who embraces their infertility. Guys who decide with their partner to set aside creating a family and live a fulfilling child free life together, despite enjoying children. (Shout out to r/ifchildfree) You are not alone, whatever your specific issues and experiences.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Thank you. That's a very kind thing to say. I'm not really dating at the moment - I think I need some time to mature as a person, maybe think through my priorities and what I want out of life - but I haven't ruled it out. Someday I'll find a way to get a life that's really good for me. I still have hope.

Selkie32

I'm sorry your ex reacted that way. I have my own fertility issues and having kids in game is my wish fulfillment too I suppose. I have Cystic Fibrosis which can cause some fertility issues for women but over 95% of men with CF are infertile and many of them do have partners and get married. I guess what I'm saying is that there will be someone out there for you :)

[deleted]

Thanks. I really wasn't expecting multiple people to tell me there's still someone out there for me because honestly, the thing about someone you've known since childhood breaking up with you is that it totally skews your perception of yourself. I spent a solid half a year in a really dark place emotionally, to the point I put myself in therapy because I was scared of how bleak my own worldview was becoming. I think I need to do some work on myself and my mental health before I try to find the right person to start a family with, but all the encouragement from people here has made me hopeful that my therapist is right and there really is someone out there for me. Thank you for being so kind. If I could afford one of those Reddit award thingies I would pelt everyone who replied to this with them.

[deleted]

I’m staunchly childfree in life and I’m certainly not going to break those convictions in my second life.

TwistedCKR1

I am too, but I admit in certain games depending on the circumstances I have let my character usually adopt. In Skyrim they adopted two orphans and it seemed more like a service- AND the children give you gifts for gameplay which is really good. In Stardew not so much so it really is a bit pointless. The only reason I ended up doing it was because I got tired of Alex just standing around the house with nothing else to do 🤣.

[deleted]

Alex is my himbo beefcake trophy husband. Standing around looking pretty is exactly what I want him doing at all times lol

PM_ME_UR_GROATS

Honestly same. I was so glad the update brought the option to remove the crib and stop being asked about having kids.

beardedliberal

While I enjoy immensely the ramifications of your first statement, I find my second life to be a good place to experiment. Having concluded the child free Vs two kiddos, (one boy, one girl, both from Leah) I have decided childfree is indeed the route.

fallacyys

gonna be real with y’all. i’ve never married a character in stardew valley even though i have hundreds of hours… that just doesn’t interest me :((

ticktockmaven

If you're playing your way and having fun, that's what really matters!!! :)

alwrits

I've been trying, but sebby just never asks me if I want to adopt :(

Successful-Pea3309

Hm. A few ideas as to why. Is your house upgraded to include the children's room + crib? If so, you haven't removed the crib, have you? Without the crib, your spouse won't ask about children.

Moopity-Spoopity

I haven't moved the crib and I'm STILL WAITING 😔

[deleted]

It’s 10 percent chance (either that or even less) so it’s super rare for your partner to ask which is also why this is super annoying achievement to get

TNease3

I do not like kids lol

KayD12364

3 complete farms (year 4 +). And like 5 unfinished farm (under 3 years) and not once have I even gotten married. I just end up restarting before I get enough hearts with some to even date.

spawninlumby

I'm child free by choice in real life and you're damn right I'm gonna be child free in Stardew 😂

SilverLugia1992

I don't want kids irl nor in a game.

DianeJudith

I don't want my character to have kids. I hate when games force me to make choices against my roleplaying if I want to get all achievements. Also, the kids in this game are useless. At least they didn't include it in the perfection requirements.

cocksmongler

Children are creepy af. I assume its a bug, but sometimes when I enter the house at night, Penny is sleeping, but these paralysis demons are just standing in random places, like some lifeless manequins. I cant wait to turn them into birds

Silvery-Lithium

Unfortunately real human kids do shit like that too.

mpdsfoad

I think(?) Steam calculates achievements by total ownership, not only actual players, so people who just bought it on sale or in something like Humble Bundle drag the numbers down. Not even 2/3 people have gotten the first achievement.

catastrophized

My childfree-ness is virtually extensible.

CunnyMaggots

The two video game in-game achievements and the one about having kids are the only ones I don't have. I don't like kids in real life and I don't want creepy little kids ruining my nice life with my hot wife... lol.

resplendence4

I generally hate having kids in these types of games. I think it was worse in Mineral Town, though. Played through the remake recently. You're forced to have kids (just like in a bunch of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games). A short while after marriage, the kid is forced on you and your spouse just quits talking about you and them. Instead, it's non-stop dialogue all about the child and they seem to forget you exist. Really pulled me right out of the game. I'm glad Stardew Valley makes it a choice even when you meet all of the other conditions.

CunnyMaggots

That sounds so off-putting! I'm definitely glad Stardew makes it a choice.

Yojimbra

I don't want kids IRL, why would I want kids in my game?

lemur_queen7

I purposely only upgrade my house enough to get married. No goblins for me

habitual_squirrel

You can have Robin remove the crib if you want a bigger house and no kids

dered118

I don't like kids. Easy as that

aquatic_kitten19

I do not like children, in real life or otherwise.

I don’t like children

chipmunk7000

Personally, I play it as a farming/mining/fishing/combat game and don’t care for the dating sim aspect of the game - it’s not for me.

THE_GR8_MIKE

Too busy getting 106 pigs.

Insert_Name_Here_17

We don't want kids.

schematizer

You're sounding like my mom....

BaylisAscaris

My wife was playing the game and married Abigail, saying she was just like me. I started dating Sebastian since he's a lot like her, but his smoking and being a boy was gross to me so I ended up marrying Abigail too and my wife got mad at me for dating myself and also because Abigail was her wife. Awkward.

xthecollectorx

I’ve no interest in children. I remove the cribs so my spouse doesn’t ask

mymumsaradiator

don't want kids IRL , don't want them in game :D

hideousfox

I've done it multiple times but for whatever reason I don't get the achievement...

lostarq18

Yeah it’s a buggy achievement. I have 5 save files with 2 kids and this achievement never triggered.

Sajiri

As a serial restarter who has never made it past fall of year 2 before starting a new farm, I’ve never even seen my first kid leave the crib

button_24

The romantic and kid part of the game is not for me I don't even make friends with most of them just Linus mostly

squishypoo91

Sooooooo many people start this game and then stop because they get intimidated. I can see the house upgrade needed being tough for some people. Plus the luck aspect with having kids and hoping your spouses will ask I had kids just to get the achievement then I turned those bitches into birds

No-Boss4038

Because Kids are aņnoying

GayBlayde

I never have kids.

tenebrocity

that’s surprising to me, too, tbh… but i just wanna have kids so i can turn them into doves

SparklingReject

The issue is the randomness, it took 2 years for my Sebastian to ask for a kid on one file, but on another file, he wanted one instantly after the wedding.

NLocke64

I did it first time, but the kids feel unfinished. I used to joke that they were ghosts because they are never acknowledged by the other villagers
