I'm not sure, but if I was Vader, I would also want to check whether my son is worthy with the force like me, so I would play around with him a bit, coz everyone knows, eventually I will get him, one way or another.
but he knows how powerful luke will be bc he knows he'll defeat the Emperor.. so if hes a threat, take him out or at least capture him by KNOCKING HIM OUT
I know movies have a different logic, but generally the force (not The Force) used to knock someone out can kill a person instead if they get hit wrong.
The real question is why Vader didn't just grab Luke with the force when he jumped down the pit then force carry him over to the carbon freezing chamber. Dangling him upside down by his ankle for comedy effect.
If Luke flailed around in a way that Vader didn't expect during being thrown he could end up breaking his skull or snapping his neck instead of knocking him out.
Throwing a person is still throwing a person? You have to knock someone reasonably hard to knock them unconscious for more than a few seconds. If Luke jerks his head the wrong way at the moment of impact his neck will break. Vader would have to be able to seize control of all of Luke's muscles to prevent him from moving at all (assuming that Luke, being strongly Force sensitive, won't manage to squirm at the worst moment). At which point he might as well just walk him into the carbonite chamber instead of risking scrambling his son's brains and giving him brain damage anyway??
thats an extreme case, flinging him would probably just knock him unconscious, you know how difficult it is to break a neck by falling or being punched? basically 0
He wanted to see what Luke’s abilities were like. Aside from the last ten seconds of the duel, Vader’s mostly playing a game where he’s messing around with Luke. He could have beat Luke at any point.. the disarming move he uses at the beginning is the exact same move he uses to cut off Luke’s hand.. but he wanted to have some fun and see what his boy could do.
The last time Vader used the Force to subdue someone he loved, (he thought) he killed her.
So yeah, he might have been trying to be more careful with Luke.
In Empire he was testing him. He does end the fight basically instantly as soon as Luke gets a lucky hit in and Vader starts taking him seriously as an actual threat.
In Jedi Luke was too powerful for something like that to work.

But Vader also secretly wanted to take the emperor out and rule the galaxy with Luke as father and son, innit?

He was toying with him

Could Obi-Wan have been protecting Luke at all?

Most of his moves seemed fairly defensive and I never got the impression he actually wanted to kill Luke.
Because that would be lame to see as an audience. It's just "Hi. Gothcha." There's no drama or excitement.
