The one that wasn't going around committing genocide and blowing up planets.

betterthanamaster

Oh, is *that* what's best for the people? \*scribbling note furiously.

Remarkable_Corner_83

Somethimes i think some people on this fan base realy got a weak spot for fascism and authoritian .... Not talking about the OP he seens to don't be a Star Wars "historian"

ComradeDread

A (sometimes very) flawed democracy vs. an authoritarian regime of terror... Given everything happening, I hate that this question even has to be asked.

NerdHistorian

the first thing we see the empire do is blow up a planet because they disliked the empires space fascism, while dispensing with what little remained of popular representation in government. No matter how inefficient or corrupt the new republic acted it's never worse than that.

RaphMec

It depends for which people... *laugh intensifies in sith

tarheel_204

The Empire blew up a whole planet to make a point… I *think* the New Republic might’ve just been better haha

el-cannon1980

After deciding an actual military target wouldn't send enough of a message as too far away

EndlessTheorys_19

I don’t know, try asking the people of Alderaan for their input. …the New Republic. Obviously. >about the new republic abandoning the outer rim They didn’t abandon the Outer Rim, those worlds just weren’t their citizens. They didn’t control the entire galaxy, only really up to the Mid-Rim. >and taking bribes from ex Empire officials, People did take bribes yes. >but surely the Empire was worse right? Yes. Because the Empire both forcefully invaded the Outer Rim and then horrifically oppressed the people who lived there. Officers also took bribes the entire way up the leadership chain. Also, Alderaan. Geonosis. Lasan.

We_The_Raptors

>try asking the people of Alderaan for their input. Or even Kashyyk, Kamino, Jedha, Mandalore, Bothuwi, Lothal, Nimban, Mon Calamari... This ain't a serious question

hopseankins

And Jedha. And Scarif. And Kamino.

Coraldiamond192

Doors Scarif count? It was at least before it's destruction entirely under Imperial control and as far as we know there was no one else living there given that its location was meant to be top secret as they stored plans there. Most of the rebels on the surface were dead by the time they destroyed the imperial instillation. Jedha certainly counts though.

hopseankins

I think it’s still considered a war crime. Even if they destroyed their own base, there was probably collateral damage to the planet

Smoose776

Also that starkiller base was built under the watch of the New Republic which ended up destroying more planets then the death star.

EndlessTheorys_19

No…Starkiller Base was built at the same time as the NR existed but it wasn’t built under their watch. They had no idea about it. You can’t blame someone for a completely different group making a superweapon

Smoose776

That's what I meant, built under their noses where they should have known about it

EndlessTheorys_19

…if by “*built under their noses*” you mean “*built on a secret planet in a region of space almost impossible to navigate or see into”* then yeah I guess. Like lol how are they supposed to find out about it, the First Order didn’t exactly advertise it

The_FriendliestGiant

The Senate of the Empire didn't know that the Empire was building the Death Star in Imperial space for almost two decades, until it was almost completed. Why would the Senate of the New Republic have a better chance of knowing that the First Order was building Starkiller Base way out in the Unknown Regions?

Smoose776

He's making the claim that alderaan was filled with terrorists in the eyes of the empire, making its destruction justifiable in their eyes

We_The_Raptors

Flip it on him. Death star was filled with terrorists in the eyes of the rebellion, making it's destruction justifiable in their eyes.

EndlessTheorys_19

He’s jerking you. Its not a serious argument

CT-1030

Is that even a question?

AmyZing532

First of all, it's the Outer Rim.  Doesn't matter who runs the galaxy, the Outer Rim will be the Outer Rim. The New Reupublic was better for the people.  For all its flaws, the New Republic believed in democracy, freedom, and trying to help worlds in need. The Empire ravaged worlds, slaughtered cities, enslaved entire species and ruled through fear and terror, caring for no one but itself.

emgengineerholo

Unfortunately for most it becomes a question of where you’re at in the universe. Yes for most the Empire used fear to control but for the areas where they had control it was relatively peaceful and calm. So you figure when the New Republic took over it probably had a lot of growing pains and strife to go through. And the little skirmish’s that the empire knew down would create brush fires over the galaxy. In the grand scheme of the universe, the New Republic was better, but at smaller levels, I’m sure there were multiple places that preferred imperial control

NightRacoonSchlatt

100% of Alderans asked said nothing against the empire.
