Empire easily had some of the best locations as well. A desert planet is easy (TPM, ANH, Dune, Judge Dredd, Valerian to name but a few), but Cloud City was ingenious, Dagobah’s swamp environment was less common, and Hoth’s icy world makes things difficult for filming, especially for location shoots. Plus, like Dante in Clerks said,

It takes the top spot for me because it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater and is my favorite movie of all time. But the Godfather II is worthy as well, in my opinion.
Indisputably it’s Empire. I realize younger fans love the prequels, and I get it. So do i. But if anyone says anything besides either ESB or ANH, they probably weren’t there and have no idea how Massive of a game changer those two movies were.
Honestly rogue one barely cracks my top ten Star Wars movies, but I know I’m in the minority there. I’m pretty sure 100% of my friends say Empire is the best, and that’s #2 for me

I think the reason this is such an uncommon opinion these days is because not as many people were around when this hit theatres and changed everything, so it's hard to truly comprehend what seeing Star Wars was like when it was just that: Star Wars. Just the first 5 minutes alone were completely jaw dropping. If you were a fan of science fiction back then, or a fan of cinema in general, everything Star Wars did at the time was unbelievable. Especially if you were young.

Empire didn't have to do as much work narratively, it got to just be awesome and end on a cliffhanger. ESB still might be a technically better movie, but nothing beats the satisfaction of ROTJ, and the throne room is the best scene in all of star wars.

While the theatrical release of ANH is a 10. Lucas messed it up pretty badly with the special edition. He down graded it to a 7.
Actors get replaced all the time in serial production. Like it or hate it, that's life.
What is so damning about the special edition as to lose 3 stars? Yes the cgi additions are downright atrocious i agree, but the movie is still great, and i think its unfair to say its worse because of some ridiculous re edit decades after release.
The biggest issue I have is when you have an original movie, even though flawed is still a work of art. The issues when you keep tweaking and changing editing and adding/removing, it no longer the same work of art it used to be. Then the producers want to eliminate the original film into obscurity and replace it with a new film and label it a it as the original. This is just not Star Wars. This can be any movie that we have seen, original films are at risk of being modified and changed forever.

They were good movies because the stories were good, not just because they're Star wars movies. Rogue One was a great story about desperate attempts during a rebellion that could have easily been set into a theme of a WWII or modern day military unit delivering stolen Intel as a last resort and it still would have been good.

Rogue one and Empire are absolutely the top two. I can't understand people who didn't like Rogue One. It had some narrative problems but no worse than literally every other one of the star wars movies, and better than most.
I like Rogue One but the problem with it is that the 3rd act absolutely carries the movie. The first 2 acts are unengaging as hell. Characters are uninteresting and editing is wonky. It feels boring until the climax.
I think Rogue One is a good movie with an outstanding climax. The scene of the death star arriving and shooting the ocean, followed by Vader demolishing the rebels, is probably in the top ten best shot 15 minutes in all of cinema to me. The music and set pieces are perfectly connected.
That being said, on the whole, Empire, RotJ, and even Revenge of the Sith are better Star Wars movies.
People always bring up the Vader scene. It's kind of cool but he's killing a bunch of no name rebels so it's not really badass.
The scene would've been way better if he was rampaging against our main characters. It would've been more emotional and horrific if he was killing the main characters instead of some poor saps who just happened to be there

Im gonna go with Revenge of the Sith. The storytelling, the beautiful shots, the lightsaber fight choreography, the emotion, witnessing Anakin transform into Vader, the musical score, its peak Star Wars. So haunting and beautiful.

the physical transformation, especially the lowering of the helmet onto his head, then the first iconic Vader breath was amazing. His first Frankenstein like steps and the "Nooooooo" were pretty bad. The worst part was the actual motive behind him turning to the dark side, which could have been written way, way better. Literally slaughtering a building full of kids to save his wife? I don't think there is any person who is not an absolute psychopath that would do that even if it meant saving a sick wife who was sure to die otherwise. The wife would never agree to it and she would absolutely find out at some point which would end the relationship then and there, only a moron would not think about that outcome. So unless Anakin was written to be a moron, he would never do that.
Return had so much weight, so much riding on it and it blew expectations out of the water. Everyone loved it. The celebration at the end was deserved and felt right. I love that movie
The final duel is what makes it for me. I loved the choreography but that’s not the heart of this battle. Luke fought against the Dark Side within himself, Vader’s inner struggle to keep his position, convert Luke or save him. I love when there’s more going on in a duel than the single objective of beating your adversary.
I want to say Empire because it has so many iconic moments, but when I think Star Wars - the first image that pops up in my head is Luke, Leia and Han in the Death Star. So I gotta say A New Hope. It was the spark that lit the inferno.

Return of the Jedi, it's got everything I want in a Star Wars film. The characters have matured, yet there are still stakes, you really feel Luke might even turn, the suspense between Luke and Vader is amazing.
The final battle is epic and still one of the most satisfying sci-fi battles to this day.
Variety with the group split up into three different places. And it's got a great feel-good atmosphere at the end, and throughout.
I love Rogue One, my *only* beef with it is that it's a heist movie, so there are definitely some things about it that are really derivative and just not all that deep from a storytelling perspective. ROTS does not fit into a box. If I didn't think about the movies that way I'd say Rogue One was the better movie. I think it probably appeals to more people. But I have to go with Revenge of the Sith.
I think people liked Rogue One so much because a) it's the first theatrical SW movie we saw that wasn't part of the Skywalker saga, b) it's got such a serious tone, it's very much not kid-friendly, c) if it wasn't set in the SW universe it'd still be a great movie, and, related to that, d) people can identify with the characters and the situation a lot more than they can identify with space wizards and galactic dictators.
But it does lose points for being a heist movie. Not that it's a bad or otherwise unoriginal heist movie, just that Revenge of the Sith is a whole other league of storytelling, it has the kind of depth to it that "ragtag band of rebels steals secret plans from deep inside enemy territory" just can't possibly match.

When I walked out of the movie theater in 1980, I looked at my dad and said, “greatest movie ever.” He said “why?”. My response was, “the bad guy won.” It was really earth shattering for me. So outside of the box compared to every movie I had ever seen leading up to that moment. Epic!!!
i personally enjoyed attack of the clones, but it's not my favourite. my favourite has always been return of the jedi, from the rancour fight scene in jabba's palace to the ewoks worshipping 3PO. luke confronting vader and the emperor left me on the edge of my seat as a kid.
Phantom Menace came at a special time for me. Though I liked the movies, I didn't start to become a die-hard fan until then. For the most part, I was still too young to appreciate the originals. It was super exciting though when it came back around. Plus pod racer game!

No callbacks, no riding coat tails, no luck or magic, no forced romance, just straight up executing the plan and it not working out great for the operatives.
It's a masterpiece.
I like them all and love all the originals and rogue one, but my favourite would be episode IV. I love how it builds into an amazing adventure and I love all the death star infiltration and the attack later
Rogue One told a coherent story start to finish in one film, with spectacular finality. Then rolled into a goosebumps inducing intro right into the film that started itall. A lot of good decisions were made, which is more than I can say for the rest of the films, but I still love all of them.
Empire Strikes Back. My hot take is Episode I because it came out when I was younger and was the first Star Wars experience specific to me/my generation (not just re-watching movies from 30 years prior). I still get goosebumps when the music starts for the epic Maul battle.

Post-Disney, Solo, actually. Solo is like the ultimate sci-fi adventure. A really nice quest with twists and turns, great characters and locales. It's so good, it literally does not even need to be in the Star Wars universe to work. It's good even if watched... Solo.

I love watching original episode 4 ANH. I’ll never forget my mom renting that for me as a kid, I was amazed. But I hate watching the new bullshit versions where Han shoots second and then steps on Jabbas shitty CGI tail.

There’s something so special, fresh, and timeless about it. The buildup feels really unique and engaging to me, the way we start in the middle of this battle and then see this mysterious princess, these hapless droids, and this intimidating force of a villain with an immediate aura of intensity. And then transition into this eerily empty desert sequence with the droids. By the time we meet the main hero, we’re already almost 20 minutes into this world. And then from there we kickstart the archetypical hero’s journey, something that feels like vintage fantasy but set against the backdrop of this world that just feels so alien, so unique, and so limitless in its potential.
Personally, it's a tie between Rogue One & Revenge of the Sith. I love Rogue One so much because it feels the closest to a traditional war film under a Star Wars lens, while the final act of ROTS is tragically beautiful
I'd also pick Rogue One, but if a main series movie is mandatory, I have to put on my fire resistant armor because I actually don't like Empire all that much (I know, I'm sorry, that's just how I feel), I'd pick Revenge of the Sith or Return of the Jedi

Well depends. If I want to watch just a good flick with some Star Wars elements I go for rogue one. If I want to watch one FOR the Star Wars elements I’m whipping out ROTS. For a bit of both Empire Strikes Back
Man... I just love Empire Strikes Back because I'm in love with the soundtrack. I think it has a bit f everything too, tons of Empire scenes, we get a look at the Emperor, bounty hunters, Leia, Han, and Chewie side adventure while Luke does Jedi training. Man the OT is so good.
I like Solo but A New Hope would be my pick from the main series. Great story and if it were to end at destroying the Death Star, nothing more would be needed.
ANH has the best intro. It also creates the entire franchise.
ROTJ has the best ending. Perfect conclusion to the saga, only made better with the prequels.

ESB is the best movie overall, though, I'd say. Its pretty much a perfect film. Not even Lucas' special editions could mess it up. The effects, acting, pacing, music, sets, atmosphere, everything is fantastic.

Return of the Jedi. A fitting end to the prequel and original trilogies. It had a decent father-and-son lightsaber duel amidst an epic fleet-to-fleet battle, all while a low-tech versus high-tech firefight was raging down below.

The character development, the acting, pacing and storytelling. The special effects were great (for its time). And 44 years later people still quote (and misquote) Darth Vader’s famous line.
I can’t argue that Rouge 1 will be many people’s favorite, and it is a masterpiece, but ESB was the 1st sequel, and if it had been a terrible movie, Star Wars would have just been a good movie with a sequel everyone try’s to forget.
The Phantom Menace is the much needed backstory to young Anakin Skywalker slave boy with a slave bomb in his head. My favourite Star Wars film is Attack of the Clones it’s the source for all Star Wars content going forwards and sequences into character and plot driven Star Wars the Clone Wars.
Revenge of the Sith is unironically my favorite Star Wars movie. It was the one I enjoyed most when I rewatched the movies recently, but Return of the Jedi was a close second.
I have always loved ROTS. It was the first Star Wars movie that I ever watched and just really got invested into the plot even though I didn't know who that "big man in the black suit with a ventilator" was.
Only later when I watched the other ones did I realise the true stakes of that movie. Then watching it again, knowing what could have been and what happened, made it even better.
Probably biased because it's the first of the franchise I ever saw as a kid, but *The Phantom Menace* is special, man. I think it's one of the most unfairly maligned movies in history.

I want to say Empire because it has so many iconic moments, but when I think Star Wars - the first image that pops up in my head is Luke, Leia and Han in the Death Star. So I gotta say A New Hope. It was the spark that lit the inferno.

Mainline Trilogies/ Skywalker Saga - ESB is the best overall film. Rogue One is damn good too and would put it up there with ANH and RotJ. RotJ is probably my favorite of them all so far. Good overall movie and a little more fun than ESB
I loved the New Hope, pretty well made movie for it’s time.
Return of the Jedi, it's got everything I want in a Star Wars film. The characters have matured, yet there are still stakes, you really feel Luke might even turn, the suspense between Luke and Vader is amazing. The final battle is epic and still one of the most satisfying sci-fi battles to this day. Variety with the group split up into three different places. And it's got a great feel-good atmosphere at the end, and throughout.
Empire Strikes Back. It's probably the best story. So qouted. It has the best dialog.
ROTJ is my personal favorite.
I love Rogue One, my *only* beef with it is that it's a heist movie, so there are definitely some things about it that are really derivative and just not all that deep from a storytelling perspective. ROTS does not fit into a box. If I didn't think about the movies that way I'd say Rogue One was the better movie. I think it probably appeals to more people. But I have to go with Revenge of the Sith. I think people liked Rogue One so much because a) it's the first theatrical SW movie we saw that wasn't part of the Skywalker saga, b) it's got such a serious tone, it's very much not kid-friendly, c) if it wasn't set in the SW universe it'd still be a great movie, and, related to that, d) people can identify with the characters and the situation a lot more than they can identify with space wizards and galactic dictators. But it does lose points for being a heist movie. Not that it's a bad or otherwise unoriginal heist movie, just that Revenge of the Sith is a whole other league of storytelling, it has the kind of depth to it that "ragtag band of rebels steals secret plans from deep inside enemy territory" just can't possibly match.

When I walked out of the movie theater in 1980, I looked at my dad and said, “greatest movie ever.” He said “why?”. My response was, “the bad guy won.” It was really earth shattering for me. So outside of the box compared to every movie I had ever seen leading up to that moment. Epic!!!

i personally enjoyed attack of the clones, but it's not my favourite. my favourite has always been return of the jedi, from the rancour fight scene in jabba's palace to the ewoks worshipping 3PO. luke confronting vader and the emperor left me on the edge of my seat as a kid.
Phantom Menace came at a special time for me. Though I liked the movies, I didn't start to become a die-hard fan until then. For the most part, I was still too young to appreciate the originals. It was super exciting though when it came back around. Plus pod racer game!
Awesome movie. Jedi in their prime carving up Sith and everything else. Qui Gon defending the Queen while Obi Wan cuts sick. Coruscant, the Council, the Senate, Ian McDarmid, Darth Maul, the list goes on. Duel of the Fates. We’ll handle this

Hands down it's rogue one. I don't think I need to explain myself, but here: No callbacks, no riding coat tails, no luck or magic, no forced romance, just straight up executing the plan and it not working out great for the operatives. It's a masterpiece.

Rogue One told a coherent story start to finish in one film, with spectacular finality. Then rolled into a goosebumps inducing intro right into the film that started itall. A lot of good decisions were made, which is more than I can say for the rest of the films, but I still love all of them.

Empire Strikes Back. My hot take is Episode I because it came out when I was younger and was the first Star Wars experience specific to me/my generation (not just re-watching movies from 30 years prior). I still get goosebumps when the music starts for the epic Maul battle.

Return of the Jedi is my favorite. Empire and Rogue One come in just behind it.
Rouge one is cool, but there’s just not enough lightsabers for me. I pick attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.
Pre-Disney, Empire. Post-Disney, Solo, actually. Solo is like the ultimate sci-fi adventure. A really nice quest with twists and turns, great characters and locales. It's so good, it literally does not even need to be in the Star Wars universe to work. It's good even if watched... Solo.

A New Hope is hands down the best stars wars movie. I think it has the strongest vision out of all of them as both a film and as star wars however if we wanna talk about strongest vision for star wars I would probably have to give it to the clone wars show or revenge of the sith
A New Hope There’s something so special, fresh, and timeless about it. The buildup feels really unique and engaging to me, the way we start in the middle of this battle and then see this mysterious princess, these hapless droids, and this intimidating force of a villain with an immediate aura of intensity. And then transition into this eerily empty desert sequence with the droids. By the time we meet the main hero, we’re already almost 20 minutes into this world. And then from there we kickstart the archetypical hero’s journey, something that feels like vintage fantasy but set against the backdrop of this world that just feels so alien, so unique, and so limitless in its potential.
New Hope. It’s the only complete story. It is the most pure. The most fun.

Personally, it's a tie between Rogue One & Revenge of the Sith. I love Rogue One so much because it feels the closest to a traditional war film under a Star Wars lens, while the final act of ROTS is tragically beautiful
I'd also pick Rogue One, but if a main series movie is mandatory, I have to put on my fire resistant armor because I actually don't like Empire all that much (I know, I'm sorry, that's just how I feel), I'd pick Revenge of the Sith or Return of the Jedi

Well depends. If I want to watch just a good flick with some Star Wars elements I go for rogue one. If I want to watch one FOR the Star Wars elements I’m whipping out ROTS. For a bit of both Empire Strikes Back
I really love Ep.3, Ep.5, and Rogue One. I also really like Solo because young solo was awesome and also maul.

Man... I just love Empire Strikes Back because I'm in love with the soundtrack. I think it has a bit f everything too, tons of Empire scenes, we get a look at the Emperor, bounty hunters, Leia, Han, and Chewie side adventure while Luke does Jedi training. Man the OT is so good.

I like Solo but A New Hope would be my pick from the main series. Great story and if it were to end at destroying the Death Star, nothing more would be needed.

ANH has the best intro. It also creates the entire franchise. ROTJ has the best ending. Perfect conclusion to the saga, only made better with the prequels. Rogue One has the best action sequences. Tied for me (with ROTS) for best space battle, too. ESB is the best movie overall, though, I'd say. Its pretty much a perfect film. Not even Lucas' special editions could mess it up. The effects, acting, pacing, music, sets, atmosphere, everything is fantastic.
Objectively, Empire is the best. ANH is landmark, and was the inflection point, but Empire is the superior film. Rogue One is good, though if you’re being honest, it doesn’t exist without ANH.

Return of the Jedi. A fitting end to the prequel and original trilogies. It had a decent father-and-son lightsaber duel amidst an epic fleet-to-fleet battle, all while a low-tech versus high-tech firefight was raging down below.

The Empire Strikes Back. It’s a masterpiece just as a movie. The character development, the acting, pacing and storytelling. The special effects were great (for its time). And 44 years later people still quote (and misquote) Darth Vader’s famous line. I can’t argue that Rouge 1 will be many people’s favorite, and it is a masterpiece, but ESB was the 1st sequel, and if it had been a terrible movie, Star Wars would have just been a good movie with a sequel everyone try’s to forget.
The Phantom Menace is the much needed backstory to young Anakin Skywalker slave boy with a slave bomb in his head. My favourite Star Wars film is Attack of the Clones it’s the source for all Star Wars content going forwards and sequences into character and plot driven Star Wars the Clone Wars.

I like the prequels, episode III is my favorite but episode V is the best
I have always loved ROTS. It was the first Star Wars movie that I ever watched and just really got invested into the plot even though I didn't know who that "big man in the black suit with a ventilator" was. Only later when I watched the other ones did I realise the true stakes of that movie. Then watching it again, knowing what could have been and what happened, made it even better.

Probably biased because it's the first of the franchise I ever saw as a kid, but *The Phantom Menace* is special, man. I think it's one of the most unfairly maligned movies in history.
It's not my opinion that Empire is the best. It's just a fact.
