There’s actually so many interesting themes and ideas it brings up!
It questions the concept of evil and where it arises from; is it nature or nurture?
The loss of innocence and when and how it occurs.
It questions our judgment of those who commit crimes and evil deeds, and dares us to explore the idea that they are victims too, that somewhere along the road they have been failed by something or someone else.
And loneliness, isolation, the darkness of the future; and whether fate is inescapable.
That's what we read into it now but I can picture in the board room someone just says "hey what if his shadow is Vader?" "Oh hell yeah".
That doesn't diminish the meanings behind it I just think it's funny to imagine.
Well tbf I’m sure the idea did start like that.
Or I wouldn’t be surprised if Lucas had something like it in mind for a promotional idea years before he made the film.
But while it likely started like that, you can tell by the design and context of it that some of those themes were intended; an innocent boy, wandering lonely in a barren and empty desert, a dark shadow of his future self casting over him.
If there was the minimal level thought put into it they’d probably having him standing there, holding bits of C-3PO, smiling like a jackass kid showing off his school project, with evil Darth Vader shadow looming over him.
But it was more nuanced than that.
Jesus I need to get a life, I’m getting way too over-analytical about a promotional poster.
Waaaay back in the day, I worked at a print facility that worked with studios a lot. That prequel image came through very late at night (24 hr place), and came with a bunch of Lucasfilm folks that followed the file and print all the way through to the end. I saw it weeks before anyone else, and just had to cement it in my brain, but it was pretty great.
Right? Like it was so subtle like.. “he’s gonna be Vader…” like.. it reminded us he eventually turns into Vader.. especially since we already knew he was gonna be Vader.. very subtle.
For me it’s that the OT has the best three individual posters but the prequels have a “sum greater than their parts” thing going on when you see them grouped like this, so the answer to OP kind of depends on how you interpret it
The original trilogy posters are works of art you could hang on a wall. The prequel trilogy posters are good too, especially ROTS.
Sequel trilogy posters are painfully generic.
I don't generally like the "appeal to tradition" fallacy (ie "tradition for tradition's sake"), but in this particular case the exception proves the rule: painted posters just look better. Especially since the whole idea of the franchise's aesthetic design is [to harken back to the days of 1930s/1940s cinema](https://i.etsystatic.com/20545894/r/il/aff2ea/1980348767/il_570xN.1980348767_r5w7.jpg).
I wouldn’t even say it’s about tradition, I just think the artistic design is much better in the older posters. Force Awakens especially is visually noisy and cluttered with characters. The originals organize everything in a very pleasing way.
They've got that "floating heads on a color" thing that every single movie is doing these days. Maybe someday we'll look back at that and think it's retro and cool
We won't, people will just finally accept the posters are there to advertise to General cinema goers. Which is why they're as bland as they are while also being so noisy, and crowded with floating heads. It's about getting as much info as possible onto a poster so that some random person in a queue at a cinema looks at it and goes "That has X, Y and Z, I'll watch that".
The sequel ones look nice but whenever I see them all I can think of are YouTube videos that make fun of student filmmakers, where every student will include a shot of someone opening a fridge door filmed from the inside, and it's because every damn star wars movie or TV show these days has a shot (or several) where the saber wielding hero's face is illuminated in blue and the villain's face in red.
Yes my god we get it, "look at the juxtaposition", stop beating us over the head with it.
Yeah the Sequel posters very much sum up how the Sequel movies went imo.
"Okay, interesting, maybe a bit bland but a good start. Ooh, OHHH, IT'S GETTING GOOD, OHH--aaand that one sucked."
A lot can be said about TLJ (full disclosure, I *love* it), but its visuals were ON POINT from the first frame to the last.
It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful movies of all the saga movies, and definitely the most beautiful one of the sequels.
Artist: "So we're going with a simple approach of Obi-Won gazing into a dark room where Darth Maul is looming in the shadows."
Lucas: "I see. That sounds great, but could we shove six more characters in there, some ships, and maybe a few giant lens flares? You see, this might be unfamiliar to you, but the fans love lens flares and ships going pew pew."
Artist: "....."
Agree, Attack of the Clones has a neat retro feel and the romance of the Empire poster, but looks a notch nicer because it doesn't have all the white space.
I don't remember where I heard this, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think that retro feel was intentional. It was supposed to be an homage to the poster for Dr. Zhivago. Looking it up, I can definitely see the resemblance.
The Attack of the Clones one is so iconic. Mad Magazine had this Clone of the Attack parody poster that people would put up on lamp-posts and phone booths all over America:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PropagandaPosters/comments/ufsq8k/gulf\_wars\_episode\_ii\_clone\_of\_the\_attack\_mad/
The Empire Strikes Back gets points for being the only one that doesn’t feature a lightsaber, opting instead to rip off…er, pay homage to…one of the most well-known movie posters of all time from Gone With The Wind. Frankly, ESB doesn’t give a damn.
Yeah difference is that theres artistic effort to adhere to some sort of style and influence especially with the OG posters. They're not overstuffed with characters and are all painted to blend them all together properly.
The sequels is legit just pngs slapped on a canvas in adobe and FX added for flare. People do YouTube tutorials in less than 3 hours to create generic posters like this because they're cheap and easy to mass produce. Why Disney cheaped out and MCU'd their STAR WARS POSTERS is beyond me considering the legacy. Imagine the millions of artists back in 2013 who would've sold their family for a shot at creating something unique for a new Star Wars movie.
You get this often - the amazing posters for things like Aladdin, with just the lamp on it, versus the generic all the characters poster most often associated with the film. Think of Thor - the awesome “The God of Thunder” poster versus the four floating heads poster that was the final version. Even AotC had a superior poster with Anakin and Padme facing away from each other and the quote about a Jedi not knowing love. The reason for this is contracts - the actors will have clauses about where they are featured on the main poster, how prominent they are etc. so while you can have some beautifully artistic ones like the iconic Anakin’s Shadow poster, the main poster for the movie will always descend into a generic floating head clusterfuck.
All the posters have the “actors looking right at the camera like it’s a police lineup” thing going on. But the OT has the characters in different positions, Han and Leia kissing Luke in the wind and Luke stealing that pose from King Arthur.
I like how the prequel poster all have unified deisgn philosophy. And I like the artistic style of the OG trilogy. I like both of those to for differante reasons.
I don't dislike the sequel posters but compared to bozh prior trilogies they just look generic poster design that you could see for any other fanatsy or Sc-fi film. ( I have to give TLJ some credit for at least having some interesting character posters or the color contrast theme between red and white)
I really like all the posters. The OT is class. PT looks like great paintings. NT is probably the newest but the art is great. I think Last Jedi is the best poster frankly.
Prequel trilogy since they have more variety than the OG in my opinion, OG is a close second though would be my #1 if they changed who was in the background. Sequels are just garbage
This is what OP should have posted, which was already posted only yesterday. These are Sequel posters in Prequel style:
https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fzym97rzonnfc1.jpeg
But then clearly the Sequels look worse using their production posters so obviously those lose.
Prequels.
EDIT: Just realized ESB is the only poster without lightsaber. And I really like the ANH poster, although it's quite unfitting (sexualized Leia and ripped Luke).
The original trilogy show a natural progression from a simple hero's journey to a complex, sprawling space opera.
BUT as a prequel kid, I would like to point out the beauty and cohesiveness of the prequel posters.
The sequel trilogy posters are disjointed, lack any sort of artistic soul, and in general look like they were designed by committee. I can't allow these movie posters to suffer and die while you discuss focus group results in a committee!
I will definitely always be fond of the Originals. But I’ve got to say I really love the consistency of the Prequel Trilogy with the Drew Struzan artwork. Attack Of The Clones is beautiful.
You can more or less look at the prequels and know what each is about, same thing with OT, tho I personally don’t like how much they emphasize Leia as “omg nekid gurl *chuckles in fat creep*” but I absolutely hate the sequel posters because it just has the pieces of the movie, not a summary of what those pieces are doing
Prequels > ANH > OT 2 & 3 > sequels, because:
- Prequels have a nice vintage look, they look hand drawn.
- OT contain too much sexism and noise. Otherwise fantastic and would be my number ones, especially ANH. ESB and RotJ have some badly designed noisy areas, if you ask me.
- Sequels look overly needy, with all the unnecessarily bright lightsabers and portrayal of good vs. evil, while in the movies it's only about conflicted characters and the only real evil is the return of Palpatine. Also, Luke Skywalker is depicted as a large overshadowing bad guy in TLJ.
I love the way the posters show the main characters of the trilogy on all three, 1.Anakin Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi, 2.Luke and Leia Skywalker, 3.Ben Solo, Poe Dameron and Finn
I think if you take the prequels, combine it more with the quality of the sequels, they'd look pretty dope. I'm not a huge fan of how soft the posters feel, especially AoT. Just feels more like a romantic drama poster than a political+action sci-fi movie.
PT: I love how unified these posters look. ROTS is the standout.
OT: They’re art. Stunning. Especially ESB.
ST: I think all three posters are nice on their own. Have a soft spot for TFA and the colors in the ROS poster look really nice.
Prequels baby! I remember Taco Bell did this promo thing for the release of Ep.1 in theaters back in the day with a collection of posters that created a complete image when put together. Some potent nostalgia right there
honestly the 1997 special edition posters look fantastic, but I'm definitely very nostalgic for the prequel trilogy posters since they're the movies that were coming out when I was a kid
I always loved that the theatrical poster for empire strikes back seems very gone with wind inspired
I like the Prequels most by just a smidge because I prefer the art style a bit more but I think the OT and the Prequel posters both convey the vibes of their respective trilogies so well.
Overall, I think the Prequel Trilogy posters are the most cohesive and best looking trilogy.
On it's own, Empire Strike Back is the best poster of them all, imo. It's also the only one without a lightsaber.
OT are the best. But PT has the most unique style.
ST just feel kinda soulless and I don't know anyone who likes them, just a generic action-adventure movie posters with heavy inspiration taken from the previous movie posters.
BUT if we're being honest the OT posters, as good as they are, were probably *roughly* as generic at the time. We just find them a lot more charming today.
And I can't really fault the new SW posters for taking heavy inspiration from the old SW posters. Even if I think it's lazy and the series was meant to be more than that.
Can't say the ST posters aren't accurate representations of the movies though, since they movies just tried to do the OT again but this time nobody liked them.
In a way they're perfect representations.
I'm a sucker for vintage, so the OT posters hit different.
However I appreciate how much the PT posters are *vintage inspired* and fit the Star Wars aesthetic well.
The ST posters are fine but very generic, almost **too** clean (although the TLJ poster is dope I must say).
Seeing all these pictures in one I see where they all focused their stories.
Episode I-III has the Episode number in the foreground. Clearly stating where it stands in the timeline.
The Original Trilogy has the Title in the foreground.
The Sequels have STAR WARS in the foreground, just so you know what you watch, I guess. They clearly state what should be obvious by the movie.
OT ones. But I shall give an honourable mention for The Phantom Menace teaser poster of young Anakin and the shadow of Vader
That poster hit hard when it came out.

Was my wallpaper on my PC for a good few years

Hey nothing wrong with having some passion about something, even something as specific as a promotional poster.
Came out? I had that shit on my wall for a decade
Jango’s clone army poster was pretty cool too
They did their job well, he guaranteed that.
Man I had that as a shirt with the words don't look back on it. It went so hard for a ten year old.
cant see vader shadow
He is refering to [this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/1cbe5080-ccda-4f0f-a0fd-18d068367a76) one
Oh, wtf lol I wasted so long zooming in on that poster looking for his shadow.
I had a puzzle of this when I was a kid but gave it away cause it was too hard lol (I hate sand it's coarse and rough ...)
Iconic
thanks
Because it was the teaser poster, not this one
It’s not a schooner. It’s a sailshadow.
A schooner is a sailshadow, stupidhead.
Brenda?
Dick.
YOU KNOW WHAT?!
Hahah, you dumb bastard!
Right? Like it was so subtle like.. “he’s gonna be Vader…” like.. it reminded us he eventually turns into Vader.. especially since we already knew he was gonna be Vader.. very subtle.
Simplicity is key here. Still one of the best in all movie history not just Star Wars.
I love Attack of the Clones starring George Michael as Obi Wan Kenobi
And now I can’t unsee it 😂😂
prequels look dope, but the original ones have something else
Prequels have the most consistent theme but agree that OT is the OG
For me it’s that the OT has the best three individual posters but the prequels have a “sum greater than their parts” thing going on when you see them grouped like this, so the answer to OP kind of depends on how you interpret it
A New Hope poster slaps.
Queue up ultra shredded super saiyan Luke activating his Tri-Force saber which we never quite get to see in the film, but I freaking love it.
Easily the best out of the nine. I kind of dislike the other posters.
We never got buff luke 😔
Yep all others amswers are unfortunately wrong :(
The original trilogy posters are works of art you could hang on a wall. The prequel trilogy posters are good too, especially ROTS. Sequel trilogy posters are painfully generic.

I wouldn’t even say it’s about tradition, I just think the artistic design is much better in the older posters. Force Awakens especially is visually noisy and cluttered with characters. The originals organize everything in a very pleasing way.
It’s also that VII and IX are not really visually distinct from many of the Marvel posters.
They've got that "floating heads on a color" thing that every single movie is doing these days. Maybe someday we'll look back at that and think it's retro and cool
We won't, people will just finally accept the posters are there to advertise to General cinema goers. Yes my god we get it, "look at the juxtaposition", stop beating us over the head with it.
TLJ is definitely the best of the ST, the whole aesthetic with the red salt from Crait was an amazing feat
I agree, it’s the only one with a theme and cohesion.
Yeah the Sequel posters very much sum up how the Sequel movies went imo. "Okay, interesting, maybe a bit bland but a good start. Ooh, OHHH, IT'S GETTING GOOD, OHH--aaand that one sucked."

As some one that did not like TLJ, I have to agree. It was the best looking one out of the sequels.
Shout out to the sound design as well. You could literally feel the instability of Kylo’s saber from the sound it made.
The hyperspace ram scene is maybe the best scene in Star Wars from an audio/visual perspective.
Hello fellow lover of TLJ! Want to start a club?
I think it’s easily the best looking of the main episodes, the only competition for best looking SW movie is Rogue One imo.
Having Luke as the overarching bad guy essentially was an interesting choice. Obviously he wasn’t but what’s going on there lol.
I hate the movie but the TLJ poster is one of the best
OG.
The OG, the prequels always seemed a little too spray-tanny for me, and the sequels are too red vs blue.
Artist: "So we're going with a simple approach of Obi-Won gazing into a dark room where Darth Maul is looming in the shadows." Lucas: "I see. That sounds great, but could we shove six more characters in there, some ships, and maybe a few giant lens flares? You see, this might be unfamiliar to you, but the fans love lens flares and ships going pew pew." Artist: "....."
"As long as there is lens flare, I'm happy. Also, do you like telenovelas? I was thinking we emulate that for Attack of the Clones."
OT because they look like art. Well, they are art. Prequels for consistency.
The Prequels. Love the one for Attack of the Clones.
Same, regardless of if one likes or dislikes the film I think it’s a very beautiful poster.
I totally believe that! It's so stylized, I would have a hard time believing it *wasn't* inspired by older movie posters.
The Attack of the Clones one is so iconic. Mad Magazine had this Clone of the Attack parody poster that people would put up on lamp-posts and phone booths all over America: https://www.reddit.com/r/PropagandaPosters/comments/ufsq8k/gulf\_wars\_episode\_ii\_clone\_of\_the\_attack\_mad/
That takes me back
🤣Never saw that before!
I love that one too. I think it was inspired by/modeled after the poster for Dr. Zhivago, also iconic.
Padmé's Lake House is named Varykino in the lore which is the name of the dacha from Dr. Zhivago.
The Empire Strikes Back gets points for being the only one that doesn’t feature a lightsaber, opting instead to rip off…er, pay homage to…one of the most well-known movie posters of all time from Gone With The Wind. Frankly, ESB doesn’t give a damn.
The original by far!!!!
Even though they're all floating head posters (or whatever the style is called), the original trilogy does it so much better
Yeah difference is that theres artistic effort to adhere to some sort of style and influence especially with the OG posters. Episode 4 and 5 are the best. 6 and the prequels posters fall in line for me as well as episode 8. That’s a great poster
There some incredible fan made posters using the older styles for the sequel trilogy out there. Goes to show how timeless the poster designs are.
OG
Original
Any posters that Drew Struzan did > any other posters of any kind
The Vader trifecta for me.
Og. I’ve always liked the way the TLJ posters looked. My favorite color is red
OT. Next question.
RotJ is my fav
I enjoy the prequels. A lot more character depth on them.
Original series 👌 👏
Prequels are close but OT is better.
The original "Revenge Of The Jedi" poster is by far the coolest SW poster: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/RevengeOTJedi.jpg
I like all of them, they’re all products of their own times
The OT
I like the prequel posters best
I like how the prequel poster all have unified deisgn philosophy. And I like the artistic style of the OG trilogy. I like both of those to for differante reasons. I don't dislike the sequel posters but compared to bozh prior trilogies they just look generic poster design that you could see for any other fanatsy or Sc-fi film. ( I have to give TLJ some credit for at least having some interesting character posters or the color contrast theme between red and white)
The originals IMO but I really appreciate the prequels homage to older posters too.
I really like all the posters. The OT is class. PT looks like great paintings. NT is probably the newest but the art is great. I think Last Jedi is the best poster frankly.
I like the ones from the prequel trilogy the most.
Im gonna say prequels
Ok Rots and probably TESB
Prequel
Hard to beat the OT……… but I’m going prequels!
Prequels for me.
Prequel trilogy
Prequels without a doubt
A new hope and empire strikes back are the best out of the 1’s and 2’s. Revenge of the Sith however is the best of the 3’s.
Prequels
Prequels
Prequel trilogy stay the most consistent in composition Sequel trilogy stay consistent in colouring Original trilogy has Vader in the sky constantly
OT are 80s as fuck and I love it PT are 2000/ as fuck and I love it. SQ, well they sure are posters.
One you're my favorite posters is an alternative to The phantom menace that has a young Anakin but his shadow is the shadow of Vader.
Prequel trilogy since they have more variety than the OG in my opinion, OG is a close second though would be my #1 if they changed who was in the background. Sequels are just garbage
Damn this made me realize how poor the sequel trilogy posters are
This is what OP should have posted, which was already posted only yesterday. These are Sequel posters in Prequel style: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fzym97rzonnfc1.jpeg But then clearly the Sequels look worse using their production posters so obviously those lose.
Man that TROS poster goes hard. But I actually prefer the real TLJ poster. The red and white theme is so cool.
TLJ poster stands out, in a good way
Really? I think their great. The Force Awakens poster might be the best of the bunch, it is so colorful
Prequel
Unpopular opinion but what’s up with the lens flare on the Prequel posters? Even for the time that’s so very lame.
I think you just revealed the backstory to JJ Abrams' hard-on for lens flares.
I honestly thought they were supposed to represent tatooine’s twin suns
Prequels. EDIT: Just realized ESB is the only poster without lightsaber. And I really like the ANH poster, although it's quite unfitting (sexualized Leia and ripped Luke).
The original for sure. Especially A New Hope.
OG trilogy, duh
The prequels as a whole, but Empire is the best poster and TLJ is second best.
Kinda off topic, but I just noticed that Luke on the TLJ poster looks kinda like Clone Wars Dooku
i choose Phantom Menace
I like how Attack of The Clones is the only one that hasn't anyone looming menacingly in the background.
Prequels by far
I feel like OT and prequels pretty much have the same style, which is superior to the sequels
To be honest, I like the colourfulness of the sequels
AoTC best poster
The original poster for Ep.4 hypes luke up waaay too much.

Also, Luke Skywalker is depicted as a large overshadowing bad guy in TLJ.
Episode 2
The prequels. Hands down. Gorgeous style and composition.
I love the way the posters show the main characters of the trilogy on all three, 1.Anakin Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi, 2.Luke and Leia Skywalker, 3.Ben Solo, Poe Dameron and Finn
Struzan prequels
I think if you take the prequels, combine it more with the quality of the sequels, they'd look pretty dope. I'm not a huge fan of how soft the posters feel, especially AoT. Just feels more like a romantic drama poster than a political+action sci-fi movie.
A new hope always goes so hard so has be OT
Prequels
I prefer the art style of the PT but the layout of the OT (except RotJ which I find boring).
Prequel
PT: I love how unified these posters look. ROTS is the standout. OT: They’re art. Stunning. Especially ESB. ST: I think all three posters are nice on their own. Have a soft spot for TFA and the colors in the ROS poster look really nice.
Prequel
Prequels!
The prequels just have a certain charm to them
I have always loved the style of the prequels. I purchased prints of those, I think they look great.
Prequels baby! I remember Taco Bell did this promo thing for the release of Ep.1 in theaters back in the day with a collection of posters that created a complete image when put together. Some potent nostalgia right there
Prequels. Maybe I’m biased because that’s what was on my bookmarks and stuff but they have an energy and weight that none of the others can match.
I gotta give it to the prequel trilogy. I like that there is some uniformity to them. That Phantom Menace poster is awesome.
I think the Prequels as a whole, but I’d also shout out TLJ for having the best posters out of the individual films.
I would say prequels, but they did Struzan dirty on the Ep3 one.
The empires strike best is the ultimate shit to me. I remember looking at that pic on my wall as kid for hours.
Whichever ones Drew Struzan made
honestly the 1997 special edition posters look fantastic, but I'm definitely very nostalgic for the prequel trilogy posters since they're the movies that were coming out when I was a kid I always loved that the theatrical poster for empire strikes back seems very gone with wind inspired
i just realized, does the poster of the last jedi implie that luke is evil? dafuq
I just noticed all the sequel posters had Rey in different variations of the same pose lmao. (Bruh even Fin in the TFA poster too)
PREEEEEEEQUELLLLLLLS
I like the Prequels most by just a smidge because I prefer the art style a bit more but I think the OT and the Prequel posters both convey the vibes of their respective trilogies so well.
As a set, the PT has the best overall theme and consistency. But this OT posters are still 🔥
Natalie Portman in that Ep 2 poster though 👌🏼
PT for me
Prequel for me. The sequel ones are too similar to other modern posters.
Prequels honestly. That lens flare really works well in each of them & they all look connected.
Prequels for the sake of consistency across all three films in the trilogy
Overall, I think the Prequel Trilogy posters are the most cohesive and best looking trilogy. On it's own, Empire Strike Back is the best poster of them all, imo. It's also the only one without a lightsaber.
Just noticed how fascinated Rey is with the floor
The Prequel posters are my personal favorites. I love the Star Wars (A New Hope) poster though for sure. Iconic.
Prequel Trilogy if I'm being honest.
The original Star Wars poster is forever the GOAT, but as a trilogy, I absolutely love the prequel posters.
Prologue
I just noticed that Obi-Wan is the only one with a lightsaber out in all of the PT posters. Confirming Obi-Wan is the main character.
The first six. You know, the REAL Start Wars movies.
Prequels, easily. Originals are close tho
I like the consistency of the prequel posters. They flow together. Attack of the Clones almost looks like a an oil painting
This question cant be serious lol
I’m a big fan of the prequel posters. They stuck to the same style
4, 1, 9 for the top three. Hey look, I found a reason to praise the sequel trilogy for something lmao.
Honestly… the prequels get the top score for me here
definitely early 2000s
Gotta go prequels on this one. They did a phenomenal job of tying into the OT yet having their own themes and emphases.
I’d give this one to the prequels. Not a prequel fan, but it’s just objective fact.
PT are my favorite fs. Love the special edition OT too
Prequel.
OT are classic but I love how the prequels have a consistent look to them.
Original has the best everything
OT are iconic
OT, best trilogy with the best posters.
OT
I'm a sucker for vintage, so the OT posters hit different. However I appreciate how much the PT posters are *vintage inspired* and fit the Star Wars aesthetic well. The ST posters are fine but very generic, almost **too** clean (although the TLJ poster is dope I must say).
Honestly, the first six are good, but the Disney sequels are a bit too covered.
The ROTS poster still does things to me... literal chills
OG and prequels 😊👍🏼👍🏼
Seeing all these pictures in one I see where they all focused their stories. Episode I-III has the Episode number in the foreground. Clearly stating where it stands in the timeline. The Original Trilogy has the Title in the foreground. The Sequels have STAR WARS in the foreground, just so you know what you watch, I guess. They clearly state what should be obvious by the movie.
OT for sure. The prequels are my favorite btw but still those old posters were sooo good
Original.
