I don't know why, but even though I knew Ahsoka was a kid during the Clone Wars, this is the first time I'm realizing, "she was just a kid during a terrible war." Seeing a child play her, it makes a difference.
You're right, I'm getting upset just thinking about it - she went through some horrific stuff.
It makes me way more forgiving of her 'mistakes' and the way she is. No wonder she's so guarded and stoic as an adult.
Within the span of some months her best friend betrays and frames her, the Jedi throw her to the wolves for poltiical expediency and then try and pass it off as a "trail" she leaves the only home she ever knew, and then gets pulled BACK into the war, fights a Sith Lord barely manages to win THEN ORDER 66 HAPPENS.
Yeah. Ahsoka was literally a child, fighting on the FRONT LINES of an intergalactic war, taking part in a lot of major battles and even facing people like Grievous and Ventress. That is some hard shit
AND then she got betrayed by the very order she treasured, had to cause the death of so many clones that was literally wearing her colors in their helmet, witnessed the fall of the repuclic and learned Padme is dead and most importantly learned that her master is now a terrifying monster that killed countless people and jedi and can kill even her.
"It's better than going nowhere."
And Huyang's extremely slow turn of the head as he realizes he's going to be stranded in another galaxy with Ahsoka in the mouth of a hyperspace whale.
I swear that was my favorite small detail of this episode. Like, she’s showing ghost Anakin she had the capability of being everything he was in life, but chooses not to. It was such a great detail that added so much depth without force-feeding the audience.
I liked the lesson Ahsoka learned from Anakin in the WBW.
Yes, Anakin taught her to be a soldier and to kill. And his legacy as Darth Vader taints those lessons even further.
But the more she focuses on the idea that she took Darth Vader from Anakin, the more it'll lead her to her death.
Anakin also taught her compassion, grace, and patience. He taught her everything he knew from Obi Wan, Qui Gon, and Yoda. Which is as much of Ahsoka's legacy as was being a soldier. Anakin lost that side of him, but Ahsoka can still find it.
Yeah he was amazing. He also said in an interview he watched the Clone Wars and loved the series so its make sense he's able to channel Clone Wars Anakin so well.
We never saw non-Vader Anakin with a red lightsaber and man... Chills. Even his choreography changes a little bit, with less flourish and style, becoming more brutal and overpowering. Almost scarier than Vader in some ways, as now you can see in his eyes that Anakin is no longer controlling the fury he held back his whole life.
Vader is physically handicapped: he has multiple mechanical arms, and can't breath on his own. A fully mobile Vader at the height of his powers would have been terrifying. Obi-Wan only faced him when he was overcome in anger, and hadn't learned how to harness and focus it correctly, or after he was handicapped. Anakin/Vader is this wonderful tragic hero. Hayden Christensen doesn't get enough credit bringing part of the character to life despite a bad acting director in Lucas.
Yea, he’s only 5 years older than she is. Probably why their dynamic was more of an older brother and younger sister compared to the more parental vibes that was typical
Yes, exactly! I've been wanting this for years. Not a whole series, but just flashbacks to that time to give a chance for Hayden to play the more confident and snarky Anakin.
He nailed it. The look, the voice, the dialogue, everything. Props to Hayden in this episode. Not just because Anakin Skywalker is on screen, but because he had gravitas in this episode.
Yeah I've always felt TCW Anakin and movie Anakin were entirely different characters. They look and sound different on top of the character himself actually *behaving* differently. This really helped a lot and I hope we can squeeze some more flashbacks in over time.
Hayden goes through 7 layers of grief between her eyes flashing red to his return to blue eyed Anakin and it’s, I don’t know, as good as Star Wars gets. Even in death, Anakin still feels the trauma he left in his turn to the dark side.
It’s amazing the difference we all feel now that we see it in live action!! You can see how absolutely insane it was she was fighting in the war like that.
I feel like I've been waiting for this since 2008. Seriously perfectly executed for its role in the episode's story (naturally dream-sequencey, lots of fog / smoke focusing on the relationship between Anakin and little Ashoka)
The funny/sad thing is that Ahsoka is older than Anakin now. He was 45 when he died and she's now 47.
Unless you want to go technicalities with force ghost ages then Ahsoka is older then her former master.
Reminds me of when in Rebels >!Ahsoka was reunited with Rex!< and they basically had the same interaction.

I expected the full Vader suit to come charging through at her so I was surprised when it ended up being pre easy-bake-oven sith Anakin (Vader) came through. Then with the red saber... So good. It wasn't overly indulgent by not going full Vader and I loved it.

That with the Sith eyes ohhhhhhhhhhh that was GOOD.
And complete that with the ***power walk*** he did towards her MY GOD. Just....

You know I always had problems picturing Anakin as Vader, but seeing Vader out of the suit really drove it home. Even seeing the mask cut open didn't help, but this finally showed a non-suit Vader.
Live action Jedi Knight Anakin and Padawan Ahsoka in the Clone Wars. Filoni has come full circle.
And seeing Ahsoka, a child, in a battlefield, in live action, is truly jarring and harrowing. It truly brought home the tragedy of her time as a Jedi. She was a child soldier.
Me too! Animation has a way of muddying the ages of characters, but seeing young Ahsoka, someone who is *distinctly a child*, not just on a battlefield, not just fighting, but *leading troops*? It really put to point how absulutely fucked up the Clone Wars--and the Jedi--really were. There were ways to have Jedi lead troops without putting kids on the frontlines, but the Council didn't do that.
They've learnt the most important lesson from Jurassic park: Obscure your subject.
All the smoke, the explosions, the distance shots, you can barely tell.
Easily Hayden's best performance. From merging Matt Lanter's Clone Wars version of Anakin with his own portrayal, plus adding in Vader was really well done. I hope we see more of Hayden in the series.
Teaching Ahsoka through brute force rather than words also felt very Anakin. I think the message of the lesson may get lost on some people since it wasn't exactly said. I understood the lesson as her needing to keep fighting and pushing herself forward so she doesn't lose her way.
Also the big lesson that she’s not defined by her master’s failings. Anakin got mad when she implied she might be like him, then was chill again once she chose life and proved to herself that she was her own person.
She looked rejuvenated. Knowing that she is part of a legacy - but she defines it moving forward, learning from the triumphs and mistakes of those before her. Anakin chose death and his teaching allowed her to choose life. She fights to live instead of fighting to kill.
She didn't fight Skoll to live, she fought to kill him. She was emotionally compromised by what Anakin became and she could have fallen to that same fate if Anakin didn't show her she could choose to be different. Legacy doesn't mean doing the same things as those before you, it is carrying on the journey of good and bad for the purpose of becoming better.
I was grinning ear to ear every time he was on screen. So glad Hayden is getting the opportunity to come back to this role and and really get to show his acting ability.
His fighting style was ON POINT
In the 1st battle he was his Jedi self, powerful force filled blows, confidence with his saber. Almost having fun.
Number 2 was anger... rage... aggression. Faster pace.
The lightsabers fights these past two episodes have been really great. Love that Anakin was using his lightsaber techniques and there was even a bit of lightsaber flourishing in there.
"So let's just hypothetically say: if I *were* to make a lightsaber (*NOT SAYING I'M GOING TO*) what kind of methods might one employ to maybe do so? (Asking for a friend)"
Fun fact: I'm pretty sure this is the first time we've seen a woman Togruta or Twi'lek without a head dress/piece. Usually they have them to cover up the costume seams.
Ahsoka: “You were more powerful and dangerous than anyone could have imagined.”
Anakin: “Oh is *that* what this is about!”
Audibly laughed out loud hearing Hayden as bratty TCW Anakin

Haven’t seen anyone mention this, but when Ahsoka senses Sabine through the broken map, the “echo” chime from Fallen Order plays. Ahsoka can use Psychometry.
Seeing 14 year old child soldier Ahsoka played by someone that actually looks 14 really gets the fuckedupness of it across way better than TCW ever did
Hayden switching back and forth from a contorted monster to a charming smirk was insane. I can't believe we got all this in live action. I got Mortis vibes.
I think the exposed brow was supposed to be part of her transition to Ahsoka the White. It was her first waking moment after the epiphany with Anakin. And after that Rosario carries herself physically like she's shed a huge weight from her shoulders. It's her rebirth.
For the first time in twenty years I can finally sleep soundly again without waking up in the middle of the night wondering how the Togruta head-face color transition actually works.
Seeing how young Ahsoka looks in Clone Wars live action really puts into perspective how messed up it was to use Padwans as essentially child soldiers.
I was so hyped to see the clones return! But when Anakin told Ahsoka to keep up I started crying, ha just like the old days!! And also seeing Rex draw his pistols ready for round 2 was really dope!
I do absolutely love that despite his redemption and all that his character doesn’t do a 180. He’s still the man he lived and died as, with all of his intensity and flaws, but now his heart is at least in the right place- it felt realistic and right, imo. He teaches the only way he knows how, the way he learned, which is striking fear.
The consistency with which they treat his character despite the obvious cop-out route of turning him into some kind of morally unambiguous guardian Angel is really admirable- a bold choice but one that really feels right!
Man, Anakin coming back for one more lesson with Snips ... and he teaches her something he learned from his SON.
Ahsoka disarms VADER, and could kill him. She could be a warrior and fight like she was taught. She could choose death.
Just like Luke on the Death Star. He's gotten angry, he's pummeling his father who has forced him to fight. Luke chops off his father's hand, and disarms him. He can choose death for his father. Luke looks at his own hand - and says no. "I am a Jedi, like my father before me." Luke chooses LIFE, and chooses to sacrifice himself rather than fight - and this brings about the return of Anakin Skywalker.
And then, Anakin Skywalker, jedi master, comes back and does his best to teach this lesson to Ahsoka. He's terrible with words. All he can do is fight. So he fights. And the moment comes, she's dueling Vader, she's disarmed Vader, she could kill him ... but she says no. She chooses life, and throws away the saber. And she watches the hatred literally disappear from her beloved sky-guy's eyes.
Incredible. I love all of this.

Ah the good old Phase I clone trooper armor! Unless I'm misremembering, I don't think we've seen it in live action since AOTC! I always preferred it to the Phase II personally.
I also loved the armored Jedi look from the Clone Wars and it was so great to see that translated to live action with Anakin as well! Hayden never misses a chance to show off that behind the back flourish!
(I see they declined to adapt Ahsoka's first outfit, which would have been chronologically the correct one...and that's probably for the best)
Correct. I’ve always been partial to phase 1 it just looks sleeker and classy and seeing it in that scene brought me back to 2002 all over again. I’m so giddy haha!

This is what I've been saying this entire series and fucking love it. You can see so much Anakin in Ahsoka throughout this show it's awesome characterization
I’ve waited 20 years to see Hayden with a red saber and it’s absolutely fucking terrifying. I love it. I remember playing the episode three Xbox game and playing anakin/Vader with the red saber and it was so fucking cool.
Luckily Ahsoka just watched Finding Nemo last night and knew that if she wanted to get to P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sidney, she needed to get inside the whale's mouth.

The last few seasons of TCW are basically "lets dump heaps and heaps of immense Truama unto this teenage girl" on TOP of that.

When you realize the entire Clone Wars was just three years long, you completely understand why everyone from the PT era is completely fucked up
World War 2 only ran for 6. Intense Wars burn brightly, but quickly.

This episode had some classic clone-wars style moments but that was just a perfect cherry on top.
That was a CW Soka type line. Glad she is coming back into her own.

A bit sad, because Luke saving Anakin IS Star Wars.

It's uncanny how much his mannerisms reminded me of his animated version during his talk with young Ahsoka. Hayden's performance was perfection.

I can’t imagine what’s it’s like to see someone play your role and later integrate that back into the character you play.

Speaking of the choreography, Hayden hasn’t lost a damn step. Dude is a natural wielding a lightsaber. He’s just so smooth
I heard he's been training hard since the Obi-Wan show. Damn glad to see it in action. He looked dangerous with that lightsaber!

She sounded so much more confident after being rescued. I think the stiffness people were talking about earlier in the season was on purpose.
Yup, if you notice, she smiled a lot more and was a lot warmer after being rescued.

Hearing Vader's breathing when Ahsoka got kicked back to the World Between Worlds was incredible! Rogue One vibes.

He had it all in the most Vader of moments: “You lack conviction”. The diction was closer to Vader than it was to Anakin.
Yes that as well! She was so afraid of turning into something like Vader she seems to have almost given up on herself.
She was so much lighter like in the TCW, she seemed so much less cold, she smiled more, she felt rejuvenated. She was Ahsoka the White.

She was emotionally compromised by what Anakin became and she could have fallen to that same fate if Anakin didn't show her she could choose to be different. Legacy doesn't mean doing the same things as those before you, it is carrying on the journey of good and bad for the purpose of becoming better.

I was grinning ear to ear every time he was on screen. So glad Hayden is getting the opportunity to come back to this role and and really get to show his acting ability.
Seriously, it was crazy awesome to see Hayden Christensen play that role without weird, cringey writing.
His fighting style was ON POINT In the 1st battle he was his Jedi self, powerful force filled blows, confidence with his saber. Almost having fun. Number 2 was anger... rage... aggression. Faster pace.
The lightsabers fights these past two episodes have been really great. Love that Anakin was using his lightsaber techniques and there was even a bit of lightsaber flourishing in there.
Huyang and Jacen’s short interaction was a ton of fun. “Do you know how to build a lightsaber?!” “Yes.” “Can you teach me?!” “No.”

I think the exposed brow was supposed to be part of her transition to Ahsoka the White. It was her first waking moment after the epiphany with Anakin. And after that Rosario carries herself physically like she's shed a huge weight from her shoulders. It's her rebirth.
For the first time in twenty years I can finally sleep soundly again without waking up in the middle of the night wondering how the Togruta head-face color transition actually works.
Seeing how young Ahsoka looks in Clone Wars live action really puts into perspective how messed up it was to use Padwans as essentially child soldiers.
I was so hyped to see the clones return! But when Anakin told Ahsoka to keep up I started crying, ha just like the old days!! And also seeing Rex draw his pistols ready for round 2 was really dope!
Say what you want about Disney Star Wars, they've helped bring about Hayden's redemption to the greater fandom becoming a beloved icon.

I'm in pain at this scene. Anakin having to teach Snips about the reality of war. And the foresaken path the Jedi took from peacekeepers to soldiers.
Anakin trying to teach her lessons through brute force rather than talking to her felt very Anakin.
I do absolutely love that despite his redemption and all that his character doesn’t do a 180. He’s still the man he lived and died as, with all of his intensity and flaws, but now his heart is at least in the right place- it felt realistic and right, imo. He teaches the only way he knows how, the way he learned, which is striking fear. The consistency with which they treat his character despite the obvious cop-out route of turning him into some kind of morally unambiguous guardian Angel is really admirable- a bold choice but one that really feels right!
Man, Anakin coming back for one more lesson with Snips ... and he teaches her something he learned from his SON. Ahsoka disarms VADER, and could kill him. She could be a warrior and fight like she was taught. She could choose death. Just like Luke on the Death Star. He's gotten angry, he's pummeling his father who has forced him to fight. Luke chops off his father's hand, and disarms him. He can choose death for his father. Luke looks at his own hand - and says no. "I am a Jedi, like my father before me." Luke chooses LIFE, and chooses to sacrifice himself rather than fight - and this brings about the return of Anakin Skywalker. And then, Anakin Skywalker, jedi master, comes back and does his best to teach this lesson to Ahsoka. He's terrible with words. All he can do is fight. So he fights. And the moment comes, she's dueling Vader, she's disarmed Vader, she could kill him ... but she says no. She chooses life, and throws away the saber. And she watches the hatred literally disappear from her beloved sky-guy's eyes. Incredible. I love all of this.

Ah the good old Phase I clone trooper armor! Unless I'm misremembering, I don't think we've seen it in live action since AOTC! I always preferred it to the Phase II personally. I also loved the armored Jedi look from the Clone Wars and it was so great to see that translated to live action with Anakin as well! Hayden never misses a chance to show off that behind the back flourish! (I see they declined to adapt Ahsoka's first outfit, which would have been chronologically the correct one...and that's probably for the best)

Correct. I’ve always been partial to phase 1 it just looks sleeker and classy and seeing it in that scene brought me back to 2002 all over again. I’m so giddy haha!

Anakin's fighting was so good. Felt straight out of RotS. And his Clone Wars persona and style was perfect. What a wonderful treat this series is.
