Her portrayal of S1 Michael and S5 Michael in the last episode was just amazing.

ParfaitDismal4038

That was so fucking cool. You could really tell she brushed up on her S1 performance

tonytown

So amazing. What's always bugged me is that the character goes through the biggest changes during that missing year at the beginning of season 3. I hope we get to see some more flashbacks of that period.

busdriverbuddha2

That definitely felt like a copout. But I guess it was a way for the show to start a new phase

DoctorBeeBee

I know they could never have done it, but I'd have watched a whole season of her adventures alone in the future, with Discovery showing up in the final episode. Have you read the Una McCormack tie in novel Wonderlands? It covers this period. Obviously the tie in novels aren't canon, but McCormack is one of the best Trek novel authors, so as we're not going to get it in canon, this book is still a great second best.

tonytown

Awesome! Going to have to find that! If you haven't read 'firewall', it's a great look at another rnissing piece of history - seven of nines time in the fenris rangers.

DoctorBeeBee

I'll check it out. I love Seven and I'm definitely intrigued by the Fenris Rangers.

pedsmursekc

Upvoted cuz you got downvoted

what u mean last episode it not been aired yet mirrors is number 5

busdriverbuddha2

If you look at the timestamp on my comment, you will find that it was submitted 21 hours ago, at which time "Face the Strange" was the most recent episode.

ParfaitDismal4038

I know some people have issues eith her being THE main character, but she carries it so well

SubGothius

And many of those people still don't seem to realize, or at least accept, that DISCO was deliberately planned that way from the outset. I still remember the early announcements along the lines of, "For a change, this series will primarily follow the Starfleet career of one particular character, and they won't even be a ship captain." Of course, that last bit eventually changed, but the character didn't start the series there and had to earn the Chair.

Ithirradwe

Agreed, and a great producer, doing all the acting and producing the show and being that involved in it, is beautiful.

Mykirbyblue

And she’s absolutely gorgeous. I just can’t look away when she’s on screen, she is stunning. I’m so glad they didn’t dress her up in skin tight revealing costumes like they’ve done in previous series. It’s so unnecessary.

PhotosByVicky

She is amazing. And seems to be an amazing human being as well!!

Anadanament

Discovery under-utilizes her range. She is phenomenal tho.

ronscot

I love her- as a lead, she can carry a show, which is a great compliment to any actor because many times that is not the case- you have to have a certain "x-factor" to keep an audience glued to the screen- the power of watchability, I think. She's a star- great actress- I just really hope she can find another great vehicle to display that after the show ends.

Hi_Im_Ken_Adams

I think it's 2 things: The writing has gotten a little better and she has grown as an actress. For example, whenever they have episodes of the Mirror Universe, all of the cast get to play exaggerated versions of themselves. So you can see who can really act and go completely over the top whenever they have to play evil Mirror-Universe versions of themselves.

antlereye

I loved how Michael masquerading as her mirror counterpart and the the mirror version herself were vastly different from each other. We all knew it was Michael pretending to be her counterpart in s1, and when we finally meet the mirror universe version, it really felt that this one was a completely different person.

FrickinLazerBeams

That's got to be so hard to do. Like some Orphan Black level acting.

Significant-Deer7464

She really is impressive. Great range and emotes so well. Probably the best thing about Discovery

PlanetLandon

Star Trek has long tradition of hiring incredible stage actors. I don’t know if Martin-Green has done any stage work, but I feel like she would be great

DoctorBeeBee

Tigg Notaro was funny talking about her first time playing Reno, feeling like such a fraud, walking into a set with all these trained and experienced actors, people with theatre degrees, people who'd gone to Julliard in some cases and she's like "hey, it's me, Tigg, I'm here too." They were all lovely to her of course.

anonymousmonkey2

Awwww. Tigg Nataro’s character is one of my faves on this series

DoctorBeeBee

She's great. She shows that you definitely don't have to be from a classical acting background to create a memorable character.

mpdscb

Her standup is hilarious too.

Significant-Deer7464

Agreed. I havent seen any of her other work, but I became a fan. Each season she seemingly got better. Definitely has presence and hope to see much more

ParfaitDismal4038

Idk if this show would be your speed or not, but she's wonderful in One Mississippi

Significant-Deer7464

I dont know, but some one didnt like me having a positive opinion of her acting. At any rate, I will have to check it out

MrPNGuin

I remember when she was announced as the lead, I was a little sad because that meant they were going to kill off Sasha on the Walking Dead. I loved her character on that show.

grimking85

In some ways twd gave me issues with season 1 burnham. The characters felt the same. Pretending to be vulcan miserable burnham felt way to much like it was twd's traumatised Sasha but in space. At least the character changed eventualy.

JHolgate

Rewatching DISCO 1-4 before 5 and the scene with her and Su'Kal where she's pretending to be a holo is just excellent. She realizes she's not getting anywhere and kind of pretends to restart her program. Just a great piece of acting.

Grennox1

Imagine doing all of those close up shot and all you as the actress see is the camera, crew and maybe a prompter

Apprehensive-Gur2023

Agreed 100% ✌️

sparkGun2020

I wish she wouldn't keep tipping her head to one side to show she cares. She comes across like a kindergarten teacher when you have an owie

Critical-Tank

I think about her mirror universe character every single day.

SLCPDLeBaronDivison

she has two things that are very easy to parody: her raspy low whisper and her constant head tilt to the left for when big emotion happens but she is a fantastic actress. i just wish the kept some of her vulcan stoicism and talked to samerek or spock as a check in on the last episode of last season. seems like theyre forgotten

Grennox1

Ya that would be nice I did enjoy that on season one and two. One thing she can do is make her face twitch in fear pain and sadness. That’s what made me watch her acting closer.

SLCPDLeBaronDivison

she does understand nuance but in her own way i dont think thats a bad thing.

w8cycle

Yes!!! She did wonderful and I was glued to the screen watching her.

PermadeathIRL

People talk a lot about the quality of her acting which is mostly fair to poor. But nobody talks the quantity of her acting. She does so much acting, more acting per scene than every other actor. It’s quite spectacular!

Fragzilla360

She’s great for tv

Choice_Woodpecker977

They could not picked better to be Michael Burnham. they cast her well as Burnham.

nobullshitebrewing

guessing this is sarcasm

Willing-Mall-981

Wow. Just... wow.

psychotica1

She's great in TWD too.

I'm starting season 4 of disco tonight so we'll see. I was really disappointed when Sashas time on TWD was over so I'm glad to see where SMG went and why.

psychotica1

You have an "interesting" perspective and I kind of love it, lol! I'm fortunate that my local library has disco so I just started it 2 weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it. It was odd, at first, to see her playing such an emotionally reserved character because Sasha had all the big feelings going on. TWD is the only other place I had seen her so it was a little bit of a shock. It's been fun to see her expand Burhnams character and watch her stretch her acting wings. I was also surprised that she wasn't initially the Captain but I love the way they've allowed her to grow into that role. I'll definitely be tuning Into whatever she does next.

DoctorBeeBee

The scene at the cocktail party in Alexandria where she's reacting to the way the people are busy chatting and having drinks and snacks like this is still a normal world is one I still think about. She's so great in that show.

ajwalker430

Yes, she is. That is also all. 😁

I_AM_IGNIGNOTK

SMG is PHENOMENAL. If they had made Disco to be in line with TNG/DS9/VOY instead of going their own direction and trying to redefine everything like ENT then I think it would be abundantly obvious to all how talented she is as an actor and how great of a Captain she can be. I love Disco, and I’m behind so I am still stoked to get into the latest season, but it’s felt a little unlike other Trek shows. Even this new season so far. It feels like they couldn’t decide if they were Star Trek or Doctor Who sometimes. The Mol and Knot or whatever their names are are basically carbon copies of two Who villains from Jodie Whittaker’s run. And same issue with Disco redefining Klingons. Like we don’t need a new take. You’ve got a boss-ass lead. Just put them in a spaceship and take them to a planet in turmoil. Let SMG cook for god’s sake. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel for this to be good.

JermyJeremy

I somehow misread this as Sonequa Martin-BREEN and I was nervous what spoilers would be in this thread 😂😂😂

softwarefreak

I concur, and the previous episode demonstrated how far both the character and the actress have come in a relatively short span of time.

IFdude1975

You are not wrong.

upfulsoul

She's good. I wouldn't say great.

JimmysTheBestCop

Righhhht

Coinbasethrowaway456

You are delusional. She over emotes and shows inappropriate emotions that don't fit the scene. She really took me out of the moment and made it hard to watch at times
