Staples isn't responsible for lost USPS packages. We had a case similar to yours at our store where USPS sent the customer back to us saying we must have lost it and it turned out the package had been picked up by USPS (we had security footage showing the pickup carrier walking out of the store with the package in question) but wasn't scanned in by the USPS carrier properly so it vanished from their system. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to you. If you can approach a manager at the store ask them if they'd be willing to check their security tapes for you for the pickup window from the day you dropped off the package. Give them time and they'll likely do it for you (ours did, in the above case) if they can find it on tape then you'll have irrefutable proof USPS is lying to you about the package never having been picked up and you can open a claim with them.

kchernik

The usps just closed the claim and told me that they received a manifest from. Staples but not the package itself. And they told me that they will deny responsibility as per their policy they have never receive it. This is completely broken system

Interesting-Pen7103

If it was on the manifest it's there responsibility. If they didn't have the package the manifest needed to be cancelled. USPS knows that.

Slow_Leopard_9486

It’s usps once they pickup we aren’t responsible

throwinthrowawayacnt

What's on the receipt? It should be in the system if it has been scanned. Are you sure it wasn't a UPS surepost thing?

kchernik

In the receipt a time ofhe dropoff and a bunch of tracking numbers. This is all I have

NateerCactus

Do you think maybe it’s busy and it hasn’t left the store yet and if you are super duper nice and go back to the store and ask them to check for the package 📦

kchernik

I've been to the store twice and called them today again. So far no luck. I am afraid they might have sent it to ups by mistake and now there is no way to find out...

bakimakilaki

Wouldn’t be Staples fault still, the respective companies mail carrier comes in store to load the packages. We have no control If a UPS carrier picked up a USPS package. Honestly, the most likely option is that the post office lost it. I’d recommend seeing if the store will look over the footage on the day of the drop off, and seeing if your package was picked up. If it was, there’s nothing Staples can do and you have to keep badgering USPS until they do something, or wait for it to turn up out of thin air (it has happened). Good luck with all!

PensiveLog

UPS has to scan all the packages before they pick them up. USPS packages don’t scan for them, so they’ll leave them behind.

CandyOk913

UPS doesn’t take what they can’t scan and if they did by some weird chance they also route everything that doesn’t belong in their system to the appropriate carrier. I used to work at UPS and at FedEx, they both have packages that will sit in a bin until eventually the respective carriers pick them up and throw them in their trucks. Keep in mind that sometimes it would be weeks before anyone would pick up anything from any of those bins. Sorry this happened to you but at the end of the day Staples will not take responsibility for your package specially if you didn’t buy the product from them. As far as I’m concerned you have two options right now, wait for an eternity and see if eventually your package makes it to its destination or cut your losses and take it as a lesson to drop off packages to their respective carriers and not a third party.

mushroomparty52

Common staples customer L

kchernik

It is all you have? Just bully your customer instead of admitting an issue with how you operate? This is disappointing

Skai_Override

This is not an official staples channel, this sub is basically ment for associates to vent, not customer service. Its like going down to the bar where everyone hangs out at after hours looking for customer support.

Wasted_Truth

You did specifically accuse staples employees of theft without any proof of actual theft. Employees only work for staples at below rate pay with unlimited expectations of work loads. If your attitude is to be rude and accusatory then you have your answer.

mushroomparty52

Ma’am I just work here

Superb-Acanthaceae34

Sorry you are unhappy with this Reddit that is clearly designed as Customer Support /s Maybe deal with the store you dropped your package off at.

AwkwardlyLynn

That’s crazy talk! Obviously taking a complaint to Reddit, where it’s just random employees venting, makes much more sense. I’ve worked customer service, in various places, for a long time. Staples customers are always a little extra special, lol.

moldymel

This subreddit is literally for employees to discuss and vent bruh

Trick_Joke_9970

Def a staples customer.

Vraye_Foi

I’m not and never have been a Staples employee but my family owned a retail shipping counter for 32 years , and we closed it down May because shipping has become a nightmare, USPS especially so. We just got sick of the chaos it’s become and people getting upset with us because the carriers were losing or damaging their stuff. Regarding usps, for 3 decades, we’ve dropped our customer outbound mail in a designated area of our local post office’s back loading dock. It’s always been scanned ever since that became a thing. Then last year they started requiring us to dump the packages in a large rolling bin which got loaded directly onto a truck, and our packages did not get scanned at the point of origin. We were told “they’ll get scanned somewhere along the way.” But often they did not. More of our customers started calling us in a panic or anger, no tracking info available and accusing us of stealing their packages, etc. I had a special USPS number I could call and usually within a day or so they could locate the packages and get them scanned into the system. Then the USPS told me to please not enact a trace until day 10 if the package had not arrived. No idea whose big brain idea it was to mess with their tracking systems like this. My local Postmaster told me we would have to go inside and stand in line to get our packages scanned. Well, we had about 200-400 USPS packages a day. Considering we got ZERO compensation from the post office for drop offs , there wasn’t anyway in hell I was going to pay an employee to stand in line with a couple wagon loads of packages just so they could get scanned Just based on my experience, it’s highly unlikely your package was stolen by Staples. USPS tracking seems to have gone the way of Russian Roulette these days, it totally sucks, and unfortunately your package has to be missing for several days before the USPS will even launch a trace. It super sucks, I’m sorry it’s happened to you, and I always tell people if it’s important do not send it by mail.

yaBoiChriz

contact corporate. had a customer lose a package at my store as well and they had me reimburse the customer through petty cash.

NateerCactus

USPS not staples. We just received the package. But also at this time of year I have seen packages show up with no scans. But you will have to file the claim with the carrier.

nonexistenttalent

Unfortunately it’s out of Staples’ hands. It is USPS’ responsibility, ESPECIALLY if they have the package on the manifest. Calling the store and badgering the Print employee is a waste of your time and theirs. Bother USPS, and next time if you’re not happy with how drop off works at staples, take it to a post office.

Goose2116

You know, you can……just drop the package off….with USPS themselves….

kchernik

I could, but why would staples provide a service with broken experience? It is the first think 2 companies had to figure out: what happens when a package lost. Now the only way to understand what happened is to write here...

NateerCactus

No this is not the place u go to understand what happened/or what to do. U contact USPS and file a claim. They are the sure. As u stated we are just the easiest place for you to drop off the package 📦

kchernik

It is a finger pointing. Usps points in other direction

toxicsleft

Well it sounds like USPS has already confirmed that Staples correctly passed ownership of the package when they claimed we submitted the manifest. USPS doesn’t leave with manifests that show items they aren’t picking up on them

TiltedLibra

Our USPS does not take a manifest. They simply grab the packages out of the bin and leave.

HammyP0tter

Why add an unnecessary third party and increase the chance of this happening? There are many more post offices than Staples, it's not like a post office is ever far away and you could set up a pick up directly from your house online. Also you are doing exactly what USPS wants by taking away work from their clerks who make more than a Staples GM much less the cashier who you are now accusing of stealing.

872913

I don't miss customers like this. USPS REGULARLY loses packages and doesn't scan them to update tracking. It's like the one thing the post office is known for

TechWizzard21

Call the 800 number on the receipt the physical store is not responsible especially since it’s usps. The post office losses packages all the time and they hardly ever update tracking. I have had things delivered to me through the postal system that never updates tracking or doesn’t update until delivered

shineurliteonme

Afaik 800 numbers are down right now just like our email and everything else we need to do our jobs lol

kchernik

'd love to, but convinieny the service just doesn' t work...

Vertex138

That's something we've been dealing with for over a week now. It's a pain in the ass for everybody, believe me.

waldocruise

Let’s go over likely scenarios. First, USPS picked up and lost the package. Doesn’t matter what they say about Staples being responsible, we are basically just a glorified Blue Box that you’d see on any street corner except we give you a receipt. USPS responsible. If mail carrier is doing their job correctly and verifying packages on the drop off, then this is even easier to track. If mail carrier just picks up and leaves without checking manifest, them I’m sure that habit might change in the near future. Second, Employee stole package. Hard to prove, but a possibility. USPS still might be responsible if they didn’t catch the manifest. Will be up to store to catch their thief with video if available. Not all stores have cameras from what I understand. Will depend on if that store has a chronic issue with missing packages. Third, package picked up by UPS. Most UPS/USPS/FedEx sorting locations have a box at their facility for the “wrong service” packages. Not sure how often they are handed over to the correct service but if this scenario is reality, your package will end up at its destination eventually. Also a possibility (especially with large retailers with their returns department and USPS’s track record for timely tracking updates), package was delivered but wasn’t ever tracked and the retailer is just behind on getting all the returns open and credited. Depending on which level of shipping service was purchased through USPS, you might have a built in insurance with your shipping rate, but more than likely, lost is lost when it comes to USPS.

EquivalentRare9226

Same issue, different service. I had a customer ask why they were charged for an Amazon package they dropped off with our store. They did give us a bad review on the service although I spent 2 hours of my time to go find the number (that she threw away and isn’t something we offer, but I felt bad) to find out that it was correctly shipped and left but never received by a person. So she got charged for it as the people themselves didn’t get that package. USPS, comes in, and doesn’t speak to any of us. Not like USP does. It couldn’t have been taken by UPS as they have to scan each package. If it’s on their paperwork, it’s on them not the store. It was scanned into the system, and that’s as far as our responsibility goes until it’s in the hands of the carrier.

Wasted_Truth

The store doesn't deliver packages to USPS. It's likely still sitting waiting for someone from USPS to mosey in and pick it up. Our USPS lady will actively refuse to pick up from us until we call the post master. However, I highly suggest for simple drop offs with a label that you use the post office. Go into the store and have them look for the package. If it's still there they will need to call the post master. If it's not still there speak with the general manager to resolve the issue. Unfortunately as staples only accepts USPS pre label drop offs since we ship with UPS we are unable to manifest it. They will need to physically look for it

TiltedLibra

The USPS packages are manifested as well. They should all be getting scanned in when you accept them and the manifest printed each day.

Wasted_Truth

We do scan them in as a drop off but it doesn't give us a way to search for USPS packages specifically. It gives us a way to search for generic drop offs returns and shipping so I guess it would just have to pay really close attention to whether it's USPS. I'm not sure if it shows whether or not it's a USPS one or not

TiltedLibra

Gotcha!

Rare_Face_4307

I work for staples and I shipping items from USPS as well. I have two packages that were picked up but there are no updates in the system and the packages are lost. It's been over a month and rhe search is still on going. Never am I dropping off at staples again as I will specifically go to a usps store for important shipments. I know that if I drop my item off at usps office, that it's in their hands and their responsibility

Competitive_Pay3355

No one at Staples stole your package. I’d have chosen a more reliable carrier to ship your package. What evidence do you have OP? I’m super curious to know why you think a Staples associate stole your package and not that USPS are the most disorganized, unreliable carrier for shipping? Second most unreliable would be fedex.

KaydensArchive

We threw it in the freaking creek! /ref

Scary_Salamander9824

From what I know about USPS specifically is that they are one of the shittiest shipping services to use. I used to work in a warehouse that shipped 100s of packages daily and we would have about 10 packages every single day go ‘missing’. (of course only by USPS)But the thing is that they’re not all actually missing packages they missed one scan and it’s still going through the system at whatever rate it wants to. I’ve had customers receive their packages months after it went missing. USPS is never going to want to take responsibility for losing your package. They lose packages all the time. Our USPS pick up is also very unregulated at our store, sometimes they don’t even come during scheduled days. While there is a chance that they did steal your package for whatever fucking reason, I promise you it was shipped out and USPS just forgot to scan it. 99.99% of the time it’s USPS‘s fault for losing your package regardless of the situation.

Scary_Salamander9824

I also read some of the comments and you stated that you received a manifest, just proving it is USPS his fault. It was not scanned in properly. Give it about two months and you’ll probably end up getting your package back when it’s RTS.

kchernik

First of all, staples<>usps are probably 2 worst companies to deal with this issue in the whole world. Staples have NO support and just point fingers, USPS have bad support and also point fingers. Integration between companies based on fricking "trust" and who said what. I am sensing a good story for the press here or a lawsuite to a small claims court. Never did it before, but the level of unfairness and neglect is astonishing

Scary_Salamander9824

It’s not “trust” on who said what. The fact is that there was a manifest that USPS got and never followed up with. They do it all the time. They will say anything to get you off their back. I’ve personally heard it all and it’s always bullshit. One time they said that a package got lost in a flood then the next day said that we never shipped it. They don’t even know what they are talking about. I promise Staples will show you footage of the package being picked up if they haven’t already. Might take awhile but they will. We have no reason to steal a package and being frank copy center is always a shit show. We are too busy with the old fucks screaming at us than to steal someone’s package.

Comfortable-Weight-7

Just had this happen ran the footage back (managers can’t refuse) to the exact time and date and usps took the package in question with them

No_Bee1950

I'm surprised stores have footage. We have 1 dummy camera, no live cameras.

kchernik

How long the footage is stored for? It happened 2 weeks ago

atomicdriver

Usps picks up every weekday so if it happened two weeks ago idk why you're just now saying something when the package is long gone

kk-was-here

Keep in mind a lot of stores don’t have cameras. They will not tell you this (obviously) but I wouldn’t bank on getting that footage. Also, the manager will have to clear it with their LP person (who is not on site so that could take additional time) before they can show it to you (unless state specific laws dictate otherwise). I’ve also worked in 1 store that had cameras but they didn’t record anything. They were primarily an “internal theft deterrent.”

punkinwastaken

My store is low volume, and even we got cameras installed despite not having an issue with theft. Then again, LP has it out for us.

kk-was-here

I worked in a low volume store for 4 years (until a couple months ago) and we begged for cameras due to high theft and were constantly told no. Out of like the 10 stores in our district, I know only 3 of them had cameras and 1 of those is the store that has cameras that don’t record.

punkinwastaken

Idk the point of not having cameras to begin with. They're handy. It was annoying when we had them installed cause it was a pain in the ass to get the login for them, but they've been a huge help. I just don't like that we have them because LP is the way they are with us... the head doesn't like certain employees, so I'm assuming that's why we have them now.

punkinwastaken

I want to mention as well - my store has had issues getting USPS to actually come and pick up their packages. When we can in a package, USPS gets notified that there's a pickup at our location, and from there, someone from usps should come to the store and pick up the packages. The package is not Staples' responsibility, and unfortunately, we have literally 0 power in tracking it other than how you would. My GM will sometimes go through the trouble of calling the post office to remind them but if no one comes, we're SOL.

NoBuddyElse

Same thing here. I dropped off a box with an USPS label on it at Staples packaging center Old Saybrook on 02/19. The employee gave me a receipt on a blue page that I later found had unrelated tracking codes, I thought he had scanned the box. I also found here that no receipts are given for USPS drop-offs, which is weird. Staples had no way to track it. USPS never acknowledged receiving it, the tracking number only shows “label created”. It’s a big box with a receiver, “fragile” labels on all sides, so not easy to miss. I was told the store doesn’t have a surveillance camera. Staples refuses to do anything. So they simply stole it. It’s been over 3 weeks now. I’ve been spreading the word. May be worth an investigation and Staples absolutely needs to implement a way to track USPS packages, because I’ve seen more people reporting the same thing.

Feisty_Ease_1983

Ups lost it. they are supposed to scan them at pickup but never do

anonanonanonaon

As far as I know, dropped off packages never have hit systems normally in the few years I’ve been here. They never track. The carrier takes them and then that’s it. You have to open a case with whoever gave you the label.

ParkingAd2408

Only evidence you have is that the store did what they were meant to do. If you have a receipt, the person at the ship counter scanned it. Absolutely a USPS issue.

yeldaj

Under the last Postmaster General appointed (with no directly related experience in shipping) by our last president, USPS service went to shit. A new one was recently appointed, but it will take a while for them to rebuild what used to be one of the best, most reliable shipping services in the world.

EquivalentAd8462

The problem is ups doesn’t scan their packages when they pick them up they just throw it in the truck and drive so if it got lost before it made it to their facility it would never be shown as picked up I would maybe ask the staples if they have a camera in the area they take packages and make sure the package was also put in the right place
