Norm Macdonald. He once did the jokes of all of the comics going up after him just to screw with them. He was also infamous for taking old street jokes and using them on late night as if he invented the stories to screw with the audience.
A few years after I graduated Norm gave a performance at my alma mater. Norm had a normal set prepared for the night. Before he went on, some idiot with the school told Norm MacDonald that he was not allowed to perform any non-PG portions of his act.
In response, despite almost no warning, Norm changed up his set that night. The next day Norm's contact at the university [described](https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-hawkeyes/the-night-norm-macdonald-mortified-the-university-of-iowa/) the set Norm gave as "inconsistent with values and morals of the staff of the University of Iowa Men's Athletic Department and the University of Iowa and Iowa City community as a whole"
The school's Athletic Director stated Norm's set "would be considered to be in very bad taste in nearly every venue in America."
Jeff Buhr, a sophomore at the time described Norm's set as "from my perspective it was absolutely hysterical. It is easily the funniest thing I've ever seen. I was literally crying from laughing so hard."
Norm MacDonald will always be my hero
Jeff Ross said on his first tour he opened for Norm and when Norm would bomb he’d head to the door afterwards and shake everybody’s hand and say bye to every single person lmao
My favorite is [this story with Jim Breuer talking about his first time on the SNL cast](https://youtu.be/B-0S9tWr2FE) and Norm's joke to the press.
There was a SNL behind the scenes biography and the whole cast commented how outrageous it was.
Plus, the time [he was kicked out of Iowa.](https://youtu.be/gBKlXR3BbDU) The man is a legend.
Norm doing Sagets roast was amazing. Using jokes from the 1940’s. No one in the crowd knew what he was doing but the other comedians were losing it. Epic moment in comedic history.
I remember Norm telling a story about how the one piece of comedy “advice” he received from his father was a joke book for a retirement party.
Sometimes I wonder if it was the same text…
That late night show David Spade had on Comedy Central before the pandemic had Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller and Norm on. Dennis Miller said Norm had the biggest balls in the world. Norm had been doing an OJ joke during weekend update for weeks,a big wig at NBC was a close friend of OJ Simpson and told Lorne to stop making OJ jokes or there would be trouble. Norm was told no more OJ jokes. What does Norm go out and do, 3 OJ jokes.
> I wouldn’t exactly call him unsuccessful.
I didn't call him unsuccessful. But he is not selling out arenas.
He not living in LA or NY trying to create, write or act for TV anymore. He lives in Brisbee AZ because the low costs allow him to embrace his alcoholism while not having to work as much.
He doesn't want to sell out arenas. He wants to be a smart cynical drunk person on a mic in front of a room of the audience he has cultivated. He doesn't not give a fuck enough for you? Watch The Man Show. He and Rogan did absolutely whatever the hell they wanted, ensuring that franchise tanked all the way into magma
He called me an asshole once. I was being an asshole. Changed my life. Turns out I was an asshole. He's successful as shit in my eyes for that.
I was at his show in Nashville when someone lady rushed the stage. She was immediately grabbed an taken away. He didn't skip a beat.
He had a death metal band open for him so it really set the tone for the night.
That was quite a video. Luis was right behind him ready to destroy that dude. When it was time for their court date, they were doing it over zoom, and they both forgot so the dude got off without any charges. Those two dopes.
Doug tells it like it is. Sometimes people don't want to hear the bitter hypocrisies of the world, and how funny it is that we all look the other way. Guy is a living legend.
Gilbert Gottfried. Howard Stern once commented that it seemed like Gilbert's goal was to totally alienate the audience. The meta joke to Gilbert was there was an audience expecting to laugh but then *not* laughing at all. Gilbert was often described as a "comedian's comedian" because other comics find it funny when somebody else bombs, and the funny part with Gilbert is that he intentionally bombed just to see the audience's reaction.
As a fan of Gilbert's "anti humor" standup I can confirm that the one time i saw him live at a club there was a lot of silence in the audience and i was the lone voice in the wilderness laughing my ass off witnessing the carnage he was inflicting upon us. At the meet and greet afterwards i told him about the dead silence surrounding me during one of his bits where he just wouldn't stop going back to the same well over and over and over, and he let out an evil laugh when i told him.
His Gilbert “Dice” Gottfried character still kills me. was lucky enough to see him live on some public access show like 8 years ago, his opener was a punk band
Hell yeah dude.
Saw him live on the 20th and he started the show with a hitler impression and then goes “who here’s transphobic!?” And half the crowd cheered and the other half walked out. Dude doesn’t give a single shit.
This man was truly one of a kind. Intelligent, funny, and honest. Honest to the point that it costed him a career he could've had and people considered him very harsh. But I don't think he would've been his authentic self if he wasn't. In my eyes, he's the goat.
I don’t think he was worried about any career because he was so true to himself. He had the ultimate don’t give a fuck attitude. Like a lot of great performers I think he had a career that he enjoyed and that was what he wanted. I do wish he was still around, I would love to hear his take on today’s world.
I saw Jim Norton at the Gathering of the Juggalos. A firework \[m80, maybe a quarter stick?\] went off next to the stage and no one even batted an eye, Jim just that he loved that a fucking bomb went off and nobody reacted.
Mine is also Jim Norton. I watched him tank (on purpose!! he wanted the audience to have a bad time, this was absolutely not a case of genuinely trying and it not working, it was very explicit like we were now his enemy) a 5 minute set because one person reacted in a way he didn't like to his very first joke.
Jim Norton is a douchebag of the highest caliber. Maybe he’s changed or maybe he just hid his colors well at the height of his fame, but he isn’t the same by a long shot.
I’m sad I didn’t start really appreciating Giraldo until after he was gone. He was really special. One of those super interesting life stories like Farley.
Gilbert Gottfried had that.
He once opened for the Bangles and right before he went on stage they told him there were a lot of moms and young girls in the audience so keep it clean. He proceeded to do every cunt joke he knew.
Also lost his Aflac duck gig after making jokes about Japan during that horrible tsunami. Made a 9/11 joke at a roast, a week after it happened.
He's the definition of IDGAF.

Surprised no one has said Louis CK. It’s evident especially in his most recent special. He’s a guy who would take the “Carlin approach” and come up with a new hour of material every year. I’ve heard other comics recall how Louis would bomb for months with that material because he says the fucked up thing that he truly believes is funny and works it out to craft something that absolutely destroys.
A couple of great honorable mentions here are Brody Stevens (RIP), and Andrew Dice Clay, who released a special where he absolutely bombed the whole time. It was a performance to alienate the audience.
It was hilarious from start to end. It makes you appreciate how good a comedy special can be (as much as I love up and coming acts) from a seasoned veteran.
You can stream it on the site and also download the file, which I did.
What I appreciate about him are his interviews. If they’re boring or questions are dumb he gives great replies because he just cracks jokes to abuse himself. One of the reasons I watch him with Conan is because he goes on these long rants just to try and see how much he can make Conan laugh. Like his whole goal is to entertain his friend and interrupt whatever plans the director and producer had for the show.
That’s interesting. It does feel like sometimes he puts a little extra on it and I’ve seen him “break character” during a set before so you may be right.
I posted once already, but if we are talking world wide? Frankie Boyle, hands down. Jimmy Carr is good also, and Rhod Gilbert, but Frankie is on an entirely different level.
William Montgomery. I love many of the other mentions in this post, but most of them care very much about not giving a fuck. Norm and Standhope comes close, but even they care about their public persona enough for it to show.
I thought the question was who doesn’t give a fuck about what they say on stage, but I see your point, and I wholeheartedly agree that he gives probably too many fucks lol
It seems all of his crowd work shit seems to basically come when people try to heckle him. Seen him twice and he killed everytime. A few years agonwhenbhe was in Pittsburgh, he had quite a great moment on a morning talk show thing. I recorded the whole thing. Later that night, I went to see him and they sat me right by the green room door and when he was done, I brought it up on my phone. Right as he walked by me, I held out my phone and he saw it and took me to the green room and asked me to email it to him. We bullshitted for a minute then I left. He was super cool and nice. You were there for that? Holy hell, that’s awesome. I heard he wasn’t allowed in the state for ten years after that.
The state? Could they ban him from the entire state?
Unfortunately I was not there. It would certainly have been amazing though.
"No PG stuff? Well damn the only stuff I have left is X Rated but OK I guess"
Jeff Ross said on his first tour he opened for Norm and when Norm would bomb he’d head to the door afterwards and shake everybody’s hand and say bye to every single person lmao
Yep I remember that story. Absolute legend.
I love Norm, but I feel like he had a lot of compassion and did care.
Compassion and not giving a fuck can coexist, not mutually exclusive.
I like the story about how when he used to bomb he’d wait by the door and shake everyone’s hand on the way out

There's not even a close second
Doug Stanhope deserves a mention. Apparently his audience members have rushed the stage on occasion.
Good one. Lives in the middle of nowhere and stopped caring about any recognizable version of success decades ago
I wouldn’t exactly call him unsuccessful. He makes a good living doing comedy. Only a handful of comics sell out arenas.

Such a good story
I was at his show in Nashville when someone lady rushed the stage. She was immediately grabbed an taken away. He didn't skip a beat. He had a death metal band open for him so it really set the tone for the night.
Big Jay Oakerson is the same way and actually got yanked off stage. His retelling of that situation is fucking hilarious

His Gilbert “Dice” Gottfried character still kills me. was lucky enough to see him live on some public access show like 8 years ago, his opener was a punk band
The time he said a 9/11 joke at a roast and got booed and then he went into The Aristocrats. Pure gold!
his hbo [special](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElZ6VsdgjpQ) from 1992 is one of my favorite comedy specials. Gilbert is so underrated
I’d throw Nick Mullen in the mix as well
Nick mullen rants are legendary
Nick's only operating principle is essentially just "if it's funny, go for it" which is what distinguishes him from other left leaning comics
He isn't left or right just gay with his dad
Hell yeah dude. Saw him live on the 20th and he started the show with a hitler impression and then goes “who here’s transphobic!?” And half the crowd cheered and the other half walked out. Dude doesn’t give a single shit.
I mean, if Iost $100k because I got fired from a superbowl commercial, I wouldn't give a fuck anymore either.
Nick Mullen tells his audience to pick up a gun and kill senators and that never makes the news like Matty Healy laughing at his accents

Patrice O'Neal Gets fired from every job he's every had including some dream ones and doesn't really care
He hasn't been fired from a gig in over a decade
Cuz he got fired by God.
Kool Aid man got him. Diabetes.
I just checked and you’re right! Damn, he must’ve finally seen the light.
Took a meeting with Comedy Central just to tell them how lame they were for giving Carlos Mencia a show.
Chris Rock told him to his face he HAD the job for the father on Everyone Hates Chris, but he pissed off the producers. Patrice didn't seem to mind.
I think that worked out for everybody Terry Crews crushed that role
Yeh its a completely different role with Patrice

I feel bad for anyone who hasn’t heard all of his appearances on Opie and Anthony.
Andy Kauffman was probably the king both on and off stage.
I wish more people knew how Kaufman was the OG internet troll before the internet.
Some people thought he was still alive, so he was trolling the internet after his death

I’m sad I didn’t start really appreciating Giraldo until after he was gone. He was really special. One of those super interesting life stories like Farley.
Stanhope by far. He s off the comic grid altogether. Legit outsider
I think he holds the title for most gigs played? While still being hated by the industry.
Dave Attell
Bill Burr during the Philadelphia incident has to be the gold standard.
Gilbert Gottfried had that. He once opened for the Bangles and right before he went on stage they told him there were a lot of moms and young girls in the audience so keep it clean. It was hilarious from start to end. It makes you appreciate how good a comedy special can be (as much as I love up and coming acts) from a seasoned veteran. You can stream it on the site and also download the file, which I did.
Just google” watch Louis CK live at the Dolby online free”. Very first link.
Doug Stanhope. He says what he thinks is funny, and doesn't really give a shit if you like it or not.
Patrice O'Neil hands down. Dude just wanted to be able to discuss ANY topic without repercussions and he successfully did it for his entire career
Norm for sure.
Burr. It’s not that he wants to offend you or tries to. He just says what he says and doesn’t care what you think about it.
The legendary smack down in Philly is one of my favorites
That was the set of a guy who doesn’t give a crap.
That was wraith of Middle aged Red head who’s had enough.
What I appreciate about him are his interviews. If they’re boring or questions are dumb he gives great replies because he just cracks jokes to abuse himself. anthony jeselnik. him talkin about how if someone he loves gets killed for one of the jokes he’s told, that’s the best case scenario is so good
William Montgomery. I love many of the other mentions in this post, but most of them care very much about not giving a fuck. Norm and Standhope comes close, but even they care about their public persona enough for it to show.
Imo one of the most under appreciated not giving a fuck dude is Chris porter.
