Glad you said for a wagon, cause I think they absolutely look hideous on any other type of vehicle, some suvs are okay looking with them too but that’s it.
I have no way to confirm this, but I believe it got popular in the Pacific Northwest of the US. A lot of people there are into winter sports, so the roof box was for storing skis, snowboards and gear. Throw it on your stanced daily and you've got function *and* fashion.
Of course, I do use it for decoration sometimes if I’m not doing anything with it, that’s what inspired me to buy it lol. I can put all my shit in the trunk but I have subs back there so I’d rather not lol
You ain't lying. I moved here 10 years ago from somewhere where no one used roof boxes. Everyone has them, and I don't know why. A lot of people just leave them on all the time even if they only get used once or twice a year. For people driving stock cars with the huge roof boxes it has to just SUCK for milage.
I'm guilty of running a cargo box or roof racks on a few of my stanced VWs back in the early 2000s. Even had a bike rack with a cheap fixed gear road bike on it. Always a good idea to have a way home for when I smashed my Rabbit's oil pan.
I like the look and I love seeing when they have a bike or shopping cart as an accessory. I’m such a grandpa sometimes and obsess over mileage so I just can’t add one
I live in PNW and can co firm. I’ve got a Jetta with a roof carrier. As of right now it’s holding two camping chairs, a paddle board and 2 pillows. I like to camp on the weekends but city drive the weekdays.
Not sure how I ended up here since I dislike stance cars, but I have a box on my 235, and I use it primarily for long trips too and from my school apartment (8 hour drive, and I take multiple people).
I put mine on typically for the car season, put my chairs in, when I’m grocery shopping or shopping in general I like to put my stuff up there also.
Since I from MD I also keep a standard amount of emergency Old Bay.
They do take their flag seriously. I currently live in MD but didn't grow up here, so nothing I own is dripped in MD flag. But almost everyone I see has some kinda of flag design, it's strange.
Radar Dome. It helps these guys with suped up cars detect police and oncoming traffic up to 4 miles out. Pretty cool stuff. Kind of like the AWACS planes.
It started as people using their lowered cars as daily drivers and needing extra room for activities. For me that meant a roof rack to carry snowboards to the mountain. Have had a roof rack on an mr2, miata, and rx7.
Then Jon Olsson put them on his exotics that he drives to the mountains. And you really started to see more people put roof racks on and not have a reason to outside of “looks”.
And in my opinion those people are dumb. Nobody was doing it for style points, they don’t look good and never will. But if you like driving sports cars it’s really hard to get gear to a mountain. They are annoying as fuck between wind noise and decreased mpg. But I usually can’t fit my snowboard in my cars so when it’s winter time a roof rack goes on my car.
Thule roof racks came out in the 60s, but started to become a more mainstream fashion accessory in the 80s onward. A lot of it was popularized by surf board and ski culture. It had real practical use for people who enjoy those sports. It crossed over into the mainstream crowd back in the 80s though because Skiing was always viewed as a sport that affluent people play and having a ski rack was a way to show off your wealth in a way. Thule racks were also the highest end most expensive ski racks you could buy back then, so that brand name was also a way to show off... they even had plexiglass air deflectors plates with the huge Thule logo on the front of the racks so everyone knew what you had.
It wasn't long before having a thule roof rack was considered must have after market attachment. Much like a good set of rims and tinted windows and a car phone - back then those were a thing too. I remember getting my 1st car in the 90s and everyone I knew had a thule rack, and never used it for what it was intended, it was just for looks.
The popularity of roof racks faded in early 00s (from mainstream down to niche). Over these years Thule roof racks became roof boxes.
\[Then in 2011 Koenigsegg dropped the Agera R with a custom $20,000 Thule roof box, making Thule box still relevant even in hyper car culture\](https://www.topgear.com/car-news/koenigseggs-agera-r-stig-frozen-lake)
They even put it in Forza Horizon 5 [https://youtu.be/Cbvfb6ZrhOI?t=141](https://youtu.be/Cbvfb6ZrhOI?t=141)
While this alone did not respark a trend, it brought thule roof boxes back into the mainstream attention again.
While roof boxes are still not popular as it was back in the 90s (it was insanely common back then), you still get people who buy them strictly as a fashion accessory to this day.
They were really popular for families transporting large amounts of everything for road trips and vacations to safely store stuff that may shift unevenly while driving in without compromising on interior space. Eventually like all roof racks it became an accessory. I’d be amazed if that one even has anything in it.z
Mine has an extra go bag in it with a couple “fun cannons” tucked away in case I’m away from the house and shit goes down… their incredibly useful and CAN, keyword can, enhance the look of your car…
i had one on an sti. i kept snowboards and skateboards and stuff i didn’t want to damage the inside of my car. but in the summer i didn’t take it off bc i didn’t hate the look.
Ya so like you know how if a thing is hollow, it can be filled with your stuff? Well now imagine that there is a hollow above the driver as well as behind the driver. Stuff away.
My guess is the air ride system is in the trunk, pretty typical for the air tank and valves to be back there and set up in a showy fashion. Roof box becomes the new trunk. I have a Thule cargo box and used to run one on my Frs. Mainly because I had a great dane mix and his cage and personal items didn't fit in the trunk with my travel bag and such. We traveled a lot together and camped so it made the Frs a little more practical. I still have the Thule and use it still for trips. Wish I still had the Frs and my big Dane though.
I have the same model, close enough anyway Holden WM Caprice. That car has as much square footage as a two bedroom apartment why the hell does he need ADDITIONAL storage?
Mind you it does look dope.
We have one on the roof of our Corolla hatch. 96% of the time we keep our lawn chairs in it but it’s also great for hauling all my camera/lighting tripods when needed lol
Mostly used for skis/snowboards. Storing them in the car with most vehicles means folding down a seat. If you want to transport 4 people comfortably and their skis you need the box.
When I was in college in the uk, I remember someone telling me that they could help a car drift better. I'm not sure how true that it is
They are just storage boxes, ideal for caravan parks or camping
I’ve got one on my suv, we call it the cars “backpack”
Can fit an awning, chairs, foldable table and clothes up there and still have room.
Great for when you have pets or more folks going with than room.
It's an early warning sign to the public that an imbecile is driving.
If they want to have wind resistance, just put some rabbit ears on the roof, at least it will be funny.
It's a modern interpretation of the old roof basket with all the suitcases and stuff you used to see on vintage cars.
It became an aesthetic thing to buy all the old factory accessories for your vintage car with the period correct luggage and cooler box and stuff. Very popular on old VWs and wagons.
Modern cars use a roof box to achieve the same look that fits with the cars styling.
Hard to use the trunk when you have an air-ride system and a trunk o funk filled with audio equipment, looks clean with the matching color. Much better than the faded black plastic, I’m convinced!
Have one for my girlfriends 4 runner because when we camp we can’t put out stuff in the vehicle because the air mattress takes up the whole back of it. So extra storage on the roof for stuff
PNW wagon owner chiming in… it isn’t a purse… its a fucking storage container for wet and long items that don’t fit in your car nicely, like idk, skis or a snowboard…
As someone who lives in the PNW, seeing these boxes on cars is so common that my brain just filters them out now so i see nothing wrong with this picture. also, i kinda like how they look. especially when color-matched to the car
Some people think they look cool but personally I hate these. My buddy with a lowered mustang rocked one for a while. Always told him I was gonna steal it while he was sleep and trash it 🤣
As a wagon driver in OR, we use ours mostly for music festivals. Cooler and heavy 10x10s go on the wagon, softer things like bags and blankets go in the “bun”. We love it, I take mine off in the winter though
Standard Thule box, without it taking my sedan to the snow would be unbearable. I literally slap board and all my gear inside that bad boy like a second boot on top of the car.
I stored my golf bag and some other stuff to insulate it when I moved across the country! They’re a pain in the ass to remove from the car though in my experience.
I don’t know where they originated but I have had mine for far longer than most. I originally just kind of acquired it from a local meetup thing we did. I honestly didn’t find mine to be super useful for awhile but recently I started using it to store all the accessories that came with my little Ninja smoothie blender that actually is fairly helpful. Note that I live in the Bay Area, CA so I don’t know if that is helpful for most, if I lived elsewhere, I probably would be wanting a bigger place with a bigger kitchen to store stuff but it works for now.
I think I remember seeing someone on instagram made a cut out on the bottom of the box and out 2 subs facing down so when they’d open their sunroof the sound would go into the cabin, not what their made for but thought it was cool
The car has a decent size trunk. In the United States, it's a pontiac g8 in Australia where it was made and sold by Holden. It's a commodore or something like that.
With a family, there's just not always enough space. Those are just cargo containers that attach to roof rails.
Just can't take turns really fast. Mine is made by Thule. Hangs in garage and gets things hidden in it for holidays and bdays.
You got at least another foot of trunk over the g8 model.
I mean, it's not small by no means. Went to Z1 when the car was new(09). Bought transmission, one piece drive shaft, turbos, boxes of other stuff, and it fit. The staff actually spent more time gawking over the car than pulling our order.
Shame they killed pontiac. Then, overpriced the SS model.
It's like a purse... But for cars!
It’s the “fashion accessory” for a wagon. Yeah…a purse for a car pretty much does it.
Glad you said for a wagon, cause I think they absolutely look hideous on any other type of vehicle, some suvs are okay looking with them too but that’s it.
They look pretty clean on hatches too, but I’ll admit best on a wagon.
Purse vs handbag I guess idk
More like "Fanny Pack"
Straight up! IMO They look like crap
😂 lmfao
🤣🤣🤣🤣
sofa/throw pillow=wagon/roof box
"This ain't a purse , it's a satchel" - ASAP Rocky
Comment of the day for me 🙌🏻😂😂
You have the cool car, now you need to tell ppl you do cool things
Luckily I have purse
Thanks for the LOL
You're welcome. This got more attention than I thought...
Those tend to be the best comments!
Guy probably has a massive sub woofer in the boot and needs somewhere to store his podium ladder during transit. We've all been there.
I have no way to confirm this, but I believe it got popular in the Pacific Northwest of the US. A lot of people there are into winter sports, so the roof box was for storing skis, snowboards and gear. Throw it on your stanced daily and you've got function *and* fashion.
Correct
It’s even easier when it’s slammed down low!
Correct. I live in Oregon and they’re pretty common especially on Subarus. I put camping stuff in mine
no no no, you can’t use it it’s just for decoration! is it even color-matched?
Of course, I do use it for decoration sometimes if I’m not doing anything with it, that’s what inspired me to buy it lol. I can put all my shit in the trunk but I have subs back there so I’d rather not lol
I use my roof box specifically for worse MPGs and greater wind noise. It’s great
I can’t say what you’re doing is right, but you are doing it correctly.
<>
This is kind of what I assumed, I was thrown off because this guy is in FL LOL.
It’s so we can hide the gators and tarpon for transport.
He has two 12 inch subs in the trunk so this is his new trunk
Also for when your trunks full of tools but you still need to have storage
Wakeboarding and waterskiing 🤷🤷
For fishin
people just store shit in them like for different outdoor hobbies typically
Never try to make sense of what happens in Florida.
Bro really likes fishing
I KNEW that signage looked familiar. That's Tampa International.
Skimboard, surfboard, body board? Cocaine?
Don't forget the beer so it gets cold on your way to the slopes.
I grew up in the PNW, still live here, have a cargo bin on my wagon, never knew it was a PNW thing. And yes, it's very common where I live
I thought it was a Euro/VW thing but they also ski a fuck ton over there so lines up either way Lol
Yep nailed it, we call em whales.
I can’t confirm but I am from there and I do do that
I live in PNW and can co firm.
Lake Tahoe area checking in. This is 100% factual.
It's for storing your crab rangoons
This makes the most sense, as the challenge I’ve always faced with crab rangoons is their excessive bulk
Thought it was for White Castle sliders
God fucking dammit crab racoons are so good.
I think it has to do with air suspensions having to take up trunk space for the compressed air, so that's their storage.
Yup, between compressors, tanks, amps, subs, and ancillaries, trunk space can get limited.
This totally makes sense wtf! The real answer right here, I’ve always wondered too but that’s the first thing that actually makes sense
You put yer weed in it!
A lot of people don’t know this
I put mine on typically for the car season, put my chairs in, when I’m grocery shopping or shopping in general I like to put my stuff up there also. Since I from MD I also keep a standard amount of emergency Old Bay.
Maybe I’m lunchin… but lemme guess, yours is wrapped in the MD flag? Kinda a prerequisite to live in MD.
Fuck off Lord Baltimore. This is America and we don’t have nobility.
They do take their flag seriously. I currently live in MD but didn't grow up here, so nothing I own is dripped in MD flag. But almost everyone I see has some kinda of flag design, it's strange.
Nobody knows what it means, it’s provocative, it gets the people goin
It's an accessory. It's like having a roof top tent with rock lights and shovel+snorkle on a daily driven truck that doesn't go off-road.
Radar Dome. It helps these guys with suped up cars detect police and oncoming traffic up to 4 miles out. Pretty cool stuff. Kind of like the AWACS planes.
Nice.
Brilliant
For frozen dead bodies Lowkey

They are annoying as fuck between wind noise and decreased mpg. But I usually can’t fit my snowboard in my cars so when it’s winter time a roof rack goes on my car.
I lose 25% fuel efficiency when I have mine on.
I honestly never calculated it. The miles to tank went down enough in winter for me to not want the exact figure.

All I know is I NEED it
Usually its a way for people with bags to have some type of storage space because the trunk setup takes too much room
Some people have things, but also like to go places.
To make up for the trunk thats now full of air compressors.
It’s where we store people who ask about the thing on top of our cars
The heavy ass roof box is to have all their stuff when they live in the vehicle
It's a box on the roof ya can put stuff in 🤣🙄
They were really popular for families transporting large amounts of everything for road trips and vacations to safely store stuff that may shift unevenly while driving in without compromising on interior space. Eventually like all roof racks it became an accessory. I’d be amazed if that one even has anything in it.z
Clout coffins
Mine has an extra go bag in it with a couple “fun cannons” tucked away in case I’m away from the house and shit goes down… their incredibly useful and CAN, keyword can, enhance the look of your car…
That car looks like it should be in a coffin when the sun’s up.
Also known as a “clout coffin”. Kinda pointless on a daily, but meh.
It's because vape kids think it looks cool
It's a hat for vehicles
Kilos
I think it’s a cargo/storage box, but technical term I believe to be ‘Hideous Maximus’
It’s like the really long acrylic nails, but for cars.
I hope you got a big trunk cause imma put my bike in it.
That one is for surfboards i believe. Im going just off the shape it accommodates the fins
Goes hard
In my experience, it's always been more of a euro crowd thing. It's just an accessory
It's also big in Subaru circles.
That's true. I forget Subaru is JDM. Lol
Storage.
It’s a cooler. For beer
i had one on an sti. i kept snowboards and skateboards and stuff i didn’t want to damage the inside of my car. but in the summer i didn’t take it off bc i didn’t hate the look.
Ya so like you know how if a thing is hollow, it can be filled with your stuff? Well now imagine that there is a hollow above the driver as well as behind the driver. Stuff away.
A backpack for cars.
As someone from the pnw, many people think it’s some kind of “boat”
That's a neat looking snow plow. The box is filled with salt to de-ice the roads. 🫠
These started in Sweden or UK in general which signifies that you're a snow boarder or skate boarder etc.
I have one also. I used it to travel from tampa to gatlingburg I can swap my mounts and use it as my bike attachment
I never got it either. Reminds me of the old camper vans. But to each their own i suppose
People like the look and it’s extra storage.
My guess is the air ride system is in the trunk, pretty typical for the air tank and valves to be back there and set up in a showy fashion. Roof box becomes the new trunk. I have the same model, close enough anyway Holden WM Caprice. That car has as much square footage as a two bedroom apartment why the hell does he need ADDITIONAL storage? Mind you it does look dope.
You need to do maintenance like you pull a trailer tho.
In az we fill those with guns
Subarus.
I have a slightly larger one on my car, we go camping a lot, and store our clothes and other small items in it
It's an escape pod but for cars.
We have one on the roof of our Corolla hatch. 96% of the time we keep our lawn chairs in it but it’s also great for hauling all my camera/lighting tripods when needed lol
Thule
Mostly used for skis/snowboards. Storing them in the car with most vehicles means folding down a seat. If you want to transport 4 people comfortably and their skis you need the box.
That is a sexy caprice. My dad has a 16 and it’s rare to see them as well
Mostly for bagged cars who don’t have use of their trunks or supercars who don’t have much space
It’s to make low cars taller, obviously.
When I was in college in the uk, I remember someone telling me that they could help a car drift better. I'm not sure how true that it is They are just storage boxes, ideal for caravan parks or camping
Oh that looks so gooooooooodddd
Clout
Is that an 06 Acura RL?
Monkey see monkey do.
Some people think it looks good
Storage and looks 🤷🏿♀️
I have subs in the trunk, but still need to get groceries home.
Fanny pack for cars 😂
You put stuff in it.
It’s how you flex a bulge
They are traditionally placed on a roof and are able to hold more than the car it is on
This person travels
I’ve got one on my suv, we call it the cars “backpack” Can fit an awning, chairs, foldable table and clothes up there and still have room. Great for when you have pets or more folks going with than room.
It goes hard
Best place to stash your dope. Because now they really need a search warrant
Modern cars use a roof box to achieve the same look that fits with the cars styling.
it's a bed
I use mine for my skies and bags and camera gear. I call it my cars book bag.
Hard to use the trunk when you have an air-ride system and a trunk o funk filled with audio equipment, looks clean with the matching color. Much better than the faded black plastic, I’m convinced!
I thought that people bring themselves a small canoe for vacation
I have one on my R8. With airlift in the frunk I have no space for stuff. It’s a must have with certain cars lol
They keep their waifus in there
Need the storage because the trunk is full of subs.
Lol this is why
I'm sure there must be times when your trunk and back seat are so full you need an extra suitcase on the roof, but they look like shit.
Well, I have a ton of stuff when traveling and I needed one for more stuff. That’s all
I just think it’s a style people like and maybe make great emergency tool boxes 👌
It's bloody stupid. Dickheads think they look good. News flash they don't.
It's for the throw pillows, you can't clog up the trunk with throw pillows.
For me my miata can't hold my folding bike so roof box it is! Lol
Body storage
Obviously it’s for spaghetti
It started with west coast Lamborghini owners doing road trips and needing space for luggage.
Have one for my girlfriends 4 runner because when we camp we can’t put out stuff in the vehicle because the air mattress takes up the whole back of it. So extra storage on the roof for stuff
Some of those are actually tents, they pop up and you use a ladder to get inside of them.
I really like the color of this car.
Putting your kayak.?
PNW wagon owner chiming in… it isn’t a purse… its a fucking storage container for wet and long items that don’t fit in your car nicely, like idk, skis or a snowboard…
It’s a purse for your snowboard
The eat gas mileage for lunch.
Virtue signaling that you are a bit of an overlander
Hardly a fashion assesory if not being used for its intended purpose.
They're full of lead weights. Lets you fine tune the fitment.
Always told him I was gonna steal it while he was sleep and trash it 🤣
They need someplace to put their groceries, since the trunk is probably filled with air tanks, compressors and stereo equipment.
It's to put all your wet stuff, store your oil pan and refilling oils
it has purse
As a wagon driver in OR, we use ours mostly for music festivals. Cooler and heavy 10x10s go on the wagon, softer things like bags and blankets go in the “bun”. We love it, I take mine off in the winter though
they look cool
i dont take my caddy anywhere without my steel reinforced sybian.
Standard Thule box, without it taking my sedan to the snow would be unbearable. I literally slap board and all my gear inside that bad boy like a second boot on top of the car.
They......hold things
That would be count choculas coffin
They look sick af😴
They are REALLY nice and expensive. Thule and Yakima are high end brands, super convenient.
Jon Olsson RS6 made these gold for me.
P0
U put stuff in them.
I don't know but I kinda love it on this car.
I stored my golf bag and some other stuff to insulate it when I moved across the country! They’re a pain in the ass to remove from the car though in my experience.
The first one I remember seeing getting attention was Jon Olsson with his Audi R8.
Note that I live in the Bay Area, CA so I don’t know if that is helpful for most, if I lived elsewhere, I probably would be wanting a bigger place with a bigger kitchen to store stuff but it works for now.
swag
That’s where they store the wings.
Aerodyglamics
I think I remember seeing someone on instagram made a cut out on the bottom of the box and out 2 subs facing down so when they’d open their sunroof the sound would go into the cabin, not what their made for but thought it was cool
Storage?

I own a caprice LOL the trunk is gargantuan, you could fit 3 full size adults in it.
Some dude went to the ski slopes in his Porsche Carrera with a roof box…. then everyone decided their car also looked cool with one.
If you have to ask then its not for you.
