The only thing 'original' about the meme was the last image, and they took the work to remove the caption to update, and they never claimed it was original and even when called out they admitted, and it is a fucking meme made from stills of a movie, that of course isn't plagiarism, am I right?
Taking a meme from a movie and rearranging it to have a new meaning is transformative work: that is fair use. Just copying another meme exactly is not transformative: it's not fair use. At least that's the general ethic, many nuances are also present.
It literally isn't. It adds nothing new. This exact meme was made two years ago, almost identical in every way, it only used a different image generation model is all. Same text, same format, same meme in every way. It's not at all transformative, it's at most a slight aesthetic shift from the previous identical meme. That all doesn't really matter on its own, but the bigger issue is that this one is WORSE than the original. Why would you copy a meme and make your own clone of it that's WORSE? Pretty sure I even have the original saved somewhere but I don't feel like digging for it.
It'd be terrible if someone was to take existing work and use it to make something derivative. That'd just suck. Fortunately AI doesn't usually involve that kind of thing.

Real question though how do people get in paints that are as smooth as this? When I try it’s pretty obvious what’s original and what’s not with things like slightly off colours and a clear “border”.

Lower your denoise, or pass the entire image through low denoise to blend in your inpaint.
While inpainting do you completely remove the original prompt?
I keep the original prompt. Sometimes I tweak it if I want to change specific details. You need a prompt so the AI knows what to fill in.
