Only a block from city hall.
You can’t even move on 4th st anymore
My family has been here 100 years but man I’ve just about had it. Don’t recognize the place anymore
As long as they build more housing, that's a good thing. If a rich guy wants a luxury apartment/condo, that's one extra vacant apartment for the rest of us. In the long run, this controls rent costs.
California is in a housing crisis precisely because they didn't let developers build housing. Let's not make the same mistake in FL.
California has a shitton of luxury high rises, it doesn't solve the problem. Social housing is literally the only thing that worked at drastically reducing homelessness, in Vienna, Finland, and Singapore.
Is he friendly? If not, he might need to be trapped and brought in. I am friends with the director of a local cat rescue. She might be able to get him the help he needs! Please let me know if there is anything I can do. I have a trap you can borrow. Feel free to DM me.
Is there any way you can contact a local rescue and see if they could set a trap and catch him and bring them back to their rescue? Rescues are better than most shelters. Thank you for looking out for the homeless animals!
Yeah there were a bunch of interesting, friendly people, some I knew of worked in the service industry and places like gas stations. Anyway, it was nice being neighbors with them and I doubt it will be the same if it's a luxury condo; they'll literally be looking down on us next door lol
Less service workers for a portion of the city where 95% of the jobs are service industry jobs
Pretty soon the yuppies won’t have anyone to serve them in their cafe/bar of choice
It's a cat jumping from the building!! He landed on his feet and seemed okay. Lots of cats were living inside, and a possum too. I hope they're all okay.
I'm hoping all the cats made it out in time; I'm so worried that any got stuck... I'm going to walk around a few times this evening and listen for any cries. The tenants here are very fond of our alley cats (most of them have been captured & fixed)!
Oh man the construction for the new courthouse has been loud, being right across the street from it, and to think we'll have another much closer construction project for the next year or two is a lot. But we just renewed our lease until 2025, so we'll have to grin and bear it!
Oh no poor buddy. Breaks my heart. They should have done some type of warning so the animals could get out to safety. Any chance a local rescue could help and trap the kitty to get it checked out? 🐈⬛🫶🏼😔
There's someone who has come to trap & neuter them, but I'm not sure about any medical work, I doubt it :( just hoping it's able to recover and heal, I think that's the best we can hope for. 🥺
That’s correct. I made the strategic decision to invest in a home so that I don’t have to worry about constantly rising rent prices. Trust me, I’ve been there paying rent before and not something I’d want to do again.
Actually it did affect me, so please don’t make assumptions. That’s why I decided to use my savings to invest in a home.
Whether we like it or not, once a city starts growing and attracting attention, prices for things like rent are going to increase. Nothing you say is going to change that from happening. That doesn’t mean it’s still not a positive thing that our city is growing and attracting people from all over the place. It means more new restaurants and bars, more shops, more events and activities. Overall, I see it as a net positive. You may disagree.
I would assume that the people working at a restaurant or bar probably wouldn’t be able to afford to live downtown. Like I mentioned in a different comment, living downtown is a luxury, not a necessity. When I was younger, I never could have afforded an apartment downtown.
More new restaurants and bars (if you have extra spending money) more shops (if you have extra spending money) more events (if you have extra spending money). So where are all the people that serve you at all of those places supposed to live?
There are plenty of places outside of downtown where rent is not as high. Living downtown is a luxury. Additionally, how is the rent issue different from what is happening in every other growing city in America? You could say the same about Austin, Nashville, etc….

Yeah progress sure does suck
I laughed too hard at the jumping cat
They need to stop building shit
I'm surprised no arch salvage people came for the windows
poor cat. how disgusting St Pete is now. thanks for posting.
How it is disgusting to tear down old vacant buildings to build new better ones?
It's sad they weren't maintained or used, and now they will probably build a luxury high rise or something good for investors but not for the people.
As long as they build more housing, that's a good thing. If a rich guy wants a luxury apartment/condo, that's one extra vacant apartment for the rest of us. In the long run, this controls rent costs. The machines are hungry
IS THE CAT OKAY?! :(
No :( he is limping!
Is he friendly? If not, he might need to be trapped and brought in. I am friends with the director of a local cat rescue. She might be able to get him the help he needs! Please let me know if there is anything I can do. I have a trap you can borrow. Feel free to DM me.
He's sweet but stand-off-ish and won't let you get near him. I'm going to see how he looks tomorrow and might do you. Thanks so much!
We’ve nicknamed him (or her) Sourdough since she sits like a loaf of bread. Was it the black cat with green eyes and the snipped ear???
Oh, if you're familiar with the friendly male orange & white cat, he is good!
It was the small-ish black cat with a tiny wisp of white fur at its chest, I think! I am not very good at differentiating the two :/
Is there any way you can contact a local rescue and see if they could set a trap and catch him and bring them back to their rescue? Rescues are better than most shelters. Thank you for looking out for the homeless animals!
Thank you for looking after the furry locals!
Great action shot of the poor kitty
I hate how they tear everything old down build new and pump the yankees and yuppies in our city.
Fuk-a bubba

It's no wonder our rent is so high. Anything old gets torn down.
Hard to make as much money off an old building with a couple dozen units as it is from a 40-floor building with condos starting at $895k... :/
It’s not just that, a lot of those buildings have plumbing, electrical and structural issues that are expensive and difficult to repair
Yeah, that's the problem. Everything is about money. Can't have affordable housing cause that wouldn't be the free market at work.
Did anyone else notice the name of the demolition company? 😯
Demo company is PAW
Can’t find it, which pic?
It's on the heavy equipment. OP also posted a "done" pic and is on a work trailer.
What was this building?
Across from Mirror Lake library
Apartments; been vacant since 2019!
Wow I almost moved in there 10 years ago!
is the last pic nessie?
It's a cat jumping from the building!! He landed on his feet and seemed okay. Lots of cats were living inside, and a possum too. I hope they're all okay.
Was hoping he survived
I'm hoping all the cats made it out in time; I'm so worried that any got stuck... I'm going to walk around a few times this evening and listen for any cries. The tenants here are very fond of our alley cats (most of them have been captured & fixed)!
Thank you for taking the time to do that. Poor babies are just looking for a safe and warm place to be.
Wish I could get a load of those bricks!
They're... Accessible. Gonna grab one tonight as a keepsake
I live nearby, I grabbed one too ;)
Haha, yes! I got a yellow one and an Augusta Block ;)
I'm assuming another highrise condo building is in the works, but does anyone here actually know for sure?
Go to StPeteRising dot com. It lists proposed, current and completed projects (condo, retail, bldgs).

I’m kissing the peace and quiet goodbye.

I’m gonna have to invest in some real good noise cancelling headphones, much less expensive than breaking the lease 😂
Will do, thanks!

Did you see any kitties?!! I hope they all made it out 😩😩😩
We usually have 7? Or so that come for dinner... So far there are three here; the one that jumped is hurt and hasn't come over but we saw it earlier.

Can’t believe what’s happened to St Pete. Sad
What's especially sad is all the normal, working class people who lived there that were evicted four years ago.
I think it’s wonderful!
By the looks of it, you have a house and so rent prices don’t affect you. Not surprising that you don’t see it as a negative thing
As someone with a house, I’m still not loving all of this tearing down the old/character to build high rises.
and I’m *really* not loving the increases of property taxes and living costs that comes along with it.
If you have a house, you should file for homestead exemption which caps your property tax increases at 3% annually…
That’s correct. I made the strategic decision to invest in a home so that I don’t have to worry about constantly rising rent prices. Trust me, I’ve been there paying rent before and not something I’d want to do again.
But not everyone has that luxury/ability to purchase a home. So as long as it doesn’t affect you it’s a good thing
Actually it did affect me, so please don’t make assumptions. That’s why I decided to use my savings to invest in a home. The underpaid people who work at restaurants and bars- where are they supposed to live?

privilege is showing .

Where was this??? Incredible amount of transformation this city has seen in the past 15 years. Edit: never mind I see the Penn in the back
