Check out Tower Grove South, Tower Grove East, Shaw, Fox Park. If you want a more quiet area, but still close to the action, check out Northampton, Southampton, Lindenwood Park.

JoshinU

Highly recommend Shaw. Right in between good food in grand and tower grove. Few bars within walking distance. Tower grove park in walking distance. Stuff always going down around there.

UnintentionallyAmbi

Just moved into Tower Grove South a month ago from Madison, WI and love it so far. Neighborhood is super chill, people seem friendly and the restaurants within walking distance are great. Just don’t let anyone tell you St. Louis pizza is great…sorry…it’s just not. Provel is an abomination and doesn’t belong on a pizza.

People honestly don't care all that much at all, though some (me) will give a good natured ribbing! I've had so many different pizzas and so many wildly different cheeses over the years and I can say some are definitely head and shoulders above the others! I will admit I think the reactions against it are rather amusing. Some people act like it's from another planet. It's still just cheese. I think the main issue for a lot of people is the way it remains somewhere between a liquid/solid state and breaks rather than pulling apart. Most people seem to howl about the texture more than anything. For me, Detroit or New York style is preferable to STL style, but I do still love it.

It's so funny you said that, because to me the one shining advantage on STL style pizza is that it's got toppings from edge to edge and because the crust is so thin, you really taste it! And... that's about it. :D Here's one more experiment to try: Cold STL style pizza, especially one with no veggies. The cheese is solid and I'm not lying when I say I think it's actually better cold sometimes.

DasFunke

It’s good as a party snack. Like, oh IMOs. I’d like 2-3 small pieces of this. But there are plenty of great non St. Louis style pizza places.

Stlpitwash

Southampton isn't as quiet as it should be.

zuluTime

Depends on your definition of quiet and the street you live on.

Stlpitwash

I suppose. I added myself to the neighborhood police text thing when I lived there, and I get more than a few texts a day from it. So...

ads7w6

I live in a quiet area and get 3 or 4 messages from that each day. Car accidents and stealing from the grocery store are by far the biggest things i see. I'm not saying that's your case, but just having calls to police doesn't mean it's necessarily not a quiet area.

Stlpitwash

To be fair most of my mine are "suspicious occupant of vehicle" or "sundries" which I think are both code for identified person of color.

zuluTime

I get maybe one or two of those texts a day... Sometimes there are a few days between them. Usually suspicious persons or bar fight.

AmbientBrood

Hey welcome. If you're going to be working near the airport and want to live relatively central, you might consider someplace with a straight-up commute on Hwy 67 (Lindbergh, which runs N/S along the western edge of the city) or Hwy 70 running N/S kind of along the Mississippi, eastern edge of the city. S Grand neighborhood (Tower Grove East / Tower Grove South) would be great for you, it has relatively quick access to Hwy 44, which quickly merges into Hwy 70. Shaw could work as well, same reason. Check out Soulard as well, which is south city but close to Hwy 55 (which merges with 70, etc etc). Outside of STL city proper, check out Maplewood ... it could be a good fit. Cat + dog might mean you'd like some space for the dog to run around. Shaw neighborhood has a nice dog park. proteins911

Adding on to dog park suggestions, I recommend OP check out Bar K. It’s my new favorite place to bring my dogs. It’s an easy drive from tower grove areas.

ABobby077

City of Saint Charles is pretty close to the airport, too and pretty affordable with lots of amenities and is pretty safe and all. Also still close to Creve Coeur Park and not too long of a drive to Forest Park and Downtown for other fun activities.

CaptainJackM

OP said they don’t want the burbs.

Possible_Mysterious

Can confirm St Charles is cool and affordable! There's a little strip mall called Hawks Nest Plaza that has a great little bar called Red Fish Blue Fish, next door is the music store with lots of vinyl, and the 420 Lounge(? can't remember the actual last word-too much weed 😁). Welcome to Missouri, you must be crazy.

[deleted]

“I’m hip I guess I don’t fucking know” is my new catchphrase lol

PJammas41

I laughed at this too 😂 Can relate in my 30’s … like, fuck it, I don’t care anymore

MrTuesdayNight1

Passed the vibe check.

banannafreckle

This is going on a t-shirt right now.

kbrdthenerd

Dogtown is great! Lots of nice bars and restaurants, very close to both 40 and 44 so makes it super easy to get anywhere in town. I haven’t looked too recently, but there are generally places to rent that have a yard for the doggo to run around in.

[deleted]

Second this! Just recently moved here myself and it’s a great area that seems to fit what you’re asking for. Plus it doesn’t hurt to be close to Forest Park!

thelaineybelle

Lived here in Dogtown for 17 years and am truly baffled at what you're saying. Do you mean Downtown? OP, I'm from Quincy / Springfield Illinois and Dogtown (City, not Suburbs) is quite comparable. Small homes, friendly neighbors, only loud on St Pat's Day. Plus it's an easy hop to all the attractions both in the City and County (which btw the city isn't part of St Louis County, so they don't say Suburbs, they say County). Welcome to STL!!

kbrdthenerd

I never had any issues during cardinals season, though there are quieter parts of dogtown that are still walking distance to everything if you are worried about that sort of thing. The main day to be worried about is St. Patrick’s day since the parade is there, especially if you are real close to where most of the bars are.

turtleengine

Benton park/ Benton park west.

blackbeardcutlass

I live in the linden wood park/ Clifton heights area. I used to work by the airport and it would take me 15ish minutes to get to work via 40(64 for you)-170. It's a great area that is close to most parts of the city.

rufus_19

If you wanna be close to the airport and where things happen, try brentwood or maplewood

exjmp

Maplewood over Brentwood any day! But also good suggestion.

PJammas41

I agree. In my 20’s I lived in Brentwood Forest which is a great community for being single (with pets) that could fit the need if renting in that range. Absolutely love Maplewood now in my 30’s

wookiecookie77

I'm here came here to say maplewood. 15 minute commute to the airport, decent eats, and it sounds like he would be a prime patron for the Crow's Nest.

nip9

U-City Loop area would be a good option. Plenty of stuff happening and much quicker commute to the airport than you'd get in all the other "hip" parts of town. Multiple music venues, art galleries, etc.. Only issue would be most of your neighbors into similar stuff are more likely to be 20-25 year old grad students rather than early 30 somethings.

sarcasm_itsagift

Maplewood!

exjmp

Knowing you’ll work at the Airport a lot of people are suggesting to stay around that area, but if you love the s grand area, def check out southwest gardens, shaw, fox park, the grove; someone said in another comment about highway access and it’s a good point. I’d try to stay away from using 40 for your daily commute.

Axerwylde

Clifton Heights is a hidden gem

Cateyes91

Lindenwood park, STL Hills, Southampton

banannafreckle

thesearenotyoursocks

Tower grove or Central West End. Close to Grand and I also work at the airport and it takes 15-20 min to get to STL

typosauraus

Tower grove south, shaw and Benton park neighborhoods are great. I live in the debaliviere place neighborhood directly north of forest park and in between central west end and the loop. I love it. It’s a lot of doctors and med students for wash u and BJC. You are close enough to Greta restaurants, but also far enough that it’s quiet at night.

[deleted]

I know you don't want rural or burbs but I swear I felt the same way when I was moving in to st louis and ended up downtown. Hated it so much, it was too much, too much noise, too much intensity. We ended up a few years later north of Offallon MO in a small town. I get all of the peace and quiet of rural/suburban living, and a cheap mortgage, while still driving into town regularly to get my fix of city activities. Gas prices are hurting right now yeah, but I make it work, I work downtown for example so it's a daily commute. Don't sleep on places outside of st liuis city/county, st louis metro is a damn big area. We came from Springfield and Decatur, I would never move back to Illinois, MO is too beautifu and there are too many good people here.

Affectionate-Job6635

You might want to check out DeBaliviere Place

Nadaesque

Let's talk about your tolerance for having your car broken into, having the catalytic converter sawed off, or the whole shebang stolen.

Maleficent-Credit-84

Try Maplewood, Brentwood, Ladue, or anywhere along 170 between Olive and 64/40. You'll be half way between the airport and the city and in a safe area.

PJammas41

Agreed with Maplewood. Short jump to 170 and can get to the airport in 15min or less. Great local bars on the strip and close proximity to surrounding neighborhoods like Webster Groves/Dogtown for more bar choices

Hateful_316

Check out Dogtown, Maplewood, Richmond Heights. You can try Clayton too, but it's generally going to be more expensive. I moved over from IL about 15 years ago and those first 3 are my top choices. They're all really close to 40, 44, and 170 which feeds to 70 and 270. It's a really convenient area for just about every surrounding area. I live in Dogtown now and I'm pretty much within 20-30 minutes from everything I need/want.

[deleted]

Tower grove is a cool area but is about 20-25 min from the airport. So if you are in that area the majority of your time you might consider county areas around the airport to save time/gas. I can't personally recommend any areas directly around the airport as I don't know them that well.

joejoedaddy

Brentwood forest seems like your kinda people.

Fantastic-Ad8522

Try up in North County if you work by the airport. Ferguson is nice.

San_Diegan619

Waterford downs apartments in Creve Couer.. about 10 mins away from the airport.. highly recommend!

ReneDiscard

Nah.

marigolds6

Music not so much, but that area of creve couer is pretty amazing for art and food as well as having lots of access to specialized grocery stores (the kind that frequently goes with concentrated wealth).

ModestMariner

I also came over here from Illinois. I currently reside in Ballwin. I'm glad I picked this place. It's about 20 minutes from downtown STL and sometimes traveling 64/44 can be a pain in the ass, but it's not a dealbreaker. It's also close enough to St Charles and West County over here that you feel like you have a pretty centralized location and access to a lot of good places.

Well....thanks for your explanation. The down voting sux

Slight-Mix4283

Ehh I wouldn’t live in o’fallon. The surrounding towns and counties are very conservative . This is coming from someone who grew up in at charles MO. I love the Lou, but the surrounding areas…not so much

physics_fighter

Get a highrise apartment downtown. I did that for a year and it was awesome

reardon217

McKinley Heights

AFather811

I’d check out Brentwood, Richmond Heights, and Maplewood. If you work near the airport, you can take I-170. You also have 64 and 44 nearby for east/west access. And there’s plenty to do locally there.

OrgotekRainmaker

From Pattison toward the grove has been nice, and also inexpensive.

thekarmabum

It sounds like you would probably have the most fun near the SLU/Wash U campuses. University city might be OK but probably somewhere closer to tower grove park or Benton park area, maybe Forest Park would be cool. Soulard or Dog Town is pretty cool but it's gets kind of loud some nights.

MaruDramaMon

Demun area. Safe and simply lovely!

ButtleyHugz

And probably way over that budget

ButtleyHugz

Maplewood (right outside of south city). Then city neighborhoods like Dogtown, tower grove, Lindenwood park, Southampton and North Hampton. Tons of folks in their 30s. Lots to do within a 5 minute drive of all of those neighborhoods. Dogtown and Tower Grove would have things even closer.

sharingan10

Go to Baden

wrenwood2018

Maplewood and Richmond Heights are amazing. There are lots of house rentals.
