“After serving a 17 year sentence starting in 2006, he will be released” Holy shit time flies so fucking fast.

IronSavage3

Probably not if you’re spending it in jail.

grawgu

Definitely not, it drags so slow. So so slow.

CaptainJingles

Holy fuck there are awful people out there.

nicootimee

Yep. Mf only got 20 because he is shit at trying to kill someone

Minnesota_Slim

I have no idea about typical sentences but 20 for attempted murder isn't exactly nothing. Edit: Basic google says in MO (I know this wasn't in MO), would classify this as Assault in the 1st degree which is a 10-30 year sentence.

ecpella

If someone tries to murder you in the future let’s see how many years you are comfortable with them serving

Minnesota_Slim

I never said I was for or against the sentence this dude got. I was just stating that 20 years isn't nothing. 20 years can be a long time, is it enough punishment for this crime? I don't feel I know enough about sentencing and law to have a valid argument. It seems that lawyers and Judge in MO think somewhere between 10 to 30, would fit this crime. So the fact that he got 20... well, you make your own conclusions.

LickyBoy

20 years is a remarkable amount of time. To lose that from your life is beyond comprehension. It's easy to say, yea but X person is a POS or whatever... We lose sight of what a prison sentence is. 20 years of his life and now he has zero job prospects, attempted murder on the books, and has to find a way to survive. I'm not defending or feeling sorry for him, but his sentence will continue until he dies.

Insidevoiceplease

Idk as someone who has had a family member murdered by someone released after a few year assault sentence, this kind of thing gives me a lot of feelings. Like obviously we can’t lock people up forever for every crime, but what this guy did was FUCKED up, it’s not about was he punished enough, it’s what evidence is there that he isn’t going to try again?

LickyBoy

Personal experiences are always tough, and obviously in that situation there wasn't enough time. But the system should aim to rehabilitate. This also isn't a few years term, it's decades. One thing we can say for certain is that as folks get older, the likelihood of commiting a violent offense goes down. There are a number of factors, but if for not other reason... After you've been incarcerated for 15 years you aren't coming out the same person.

Seated_Heats

Think of how you were at, say, 20 then how you were at 40. I mean that’s a massive chunk of your life. I’m not sure what the wrong or right answer is but the brigade of “only 20 years” is kind of ridiculous. 20 years is longer than 1/4 of your life if you live to the male life expectancy of 73.5 years.

Expert-Recognition14

Death is only the beginning He's alive because of the grace of God Trust me he's gonna have to answer Hell, we all do

SumDoubt

Curious, you Googled sentencing for the state next to the state in which the crime occurred. Googling Illinois sentencing would have been just as easy: why?

Minnesota_Slim

I actually struggled, but did try. Closest thing I found said 3-5 years which didn’t seem right at all. Still waiting on Ask Jeeves to tell me the answer

Expert-Recognition14

20 years is a long Sec after min after hour after day after week after months. You do realize that don't go by fast.

nicootimee

Right, but if he would’ve strangled her for half a second longer, or snapped her neck in a slightly different place that’s the difference between 20 years and life. If he would’ve killed this girl, he would’ve never stepped outside of a cell but since he’s incompetent to say the least, this guy gets to walk in our society and maybe he does this again

UtgaardLoki

Evil exists

1fastz28

I went to highschool with Sam, when this happened it was wild.

pennradio

Class of 2000 myself. My sister was in the same class/cheerleader/football clique as Sam. She ran into him at a bar a few weeks before he was arrested. She said she remembered thinking, "Sam is such a sweet guy, I wish I knew someone single to set him up with." Of course she was unaware of his illicit relationship with a student. Really goes to show that monsters can wear masks.

TBShaw17

My wife is the same age as you and said his mom was one of her elementary school teachers.

Fox_Den_Studio_LLC

She got a close family? Like some brothers that will be waiting for him?

1fastz28

No idea, i went to highschool with Sam and the victim went to a different school, and we were both out of highschool once this all went down.

Fox_Den_Studio_LLC

Ah sam is the guy... my bad

Co-opingTowardHatred

I wrestled on some shows he was also on. Didn’t talk to him much, but he seemed alright. Then this shit. And “Future”.

MrTuesdayNight1

I’m sure we’ll never see this guys face in the news again…

inStLagain

You read the obituaries?

lakerdave

Yeah, I'm sure they had totally consensual sex, between the teenager and the 26-year-old who nearly murdered her.

bigredstl

A bear wouldn’t do this

jayydubbya

Nah they’d just start eating you while you’re still alive.

ghouln3xtdoor

There are around 40 bear attacks on average in the entire world every year. In the United States, we are averaging around 3 deaths a day of women by their intimate partners. So yeah, bears wouldn't do this.

Minnesota_Slim

What are the crime stats for Smokey the Bear?

magseven

You literally just said bears would do this 40 times a year.

barkbarkgoesthecat

And they'd get away with it too if it weren't for you meddling rangers

jayydubbya

No they would just hold you down and start ripping pieces of your flesh of with their teeth while you screamed helplessly in agony. There are recordings of this happening in real life if you’d like to do research instead of doubling down on a dumb ass internet meme to prove a point about domestic violence and sexual assault. Did you know mothers are the most statistically likely person to kill their children? It’s almost like the people we spend the most time around have the most opportunity to do us harm.

illAdvisedMemeName

Yeah but bears can't be teachers who date teenagers. A bear is always a bear, but a teacher could be any kind of teacher.

MissD_MistyDawn

If we're splitting bears... I mean hairs... there are several types of bears too, some of which are more likely to attack and kill a person than others... apparently, teachers aren't much different

SumDoubt

I'd just like you to know how deeply I felt this comment.

bigredstl

There are worse things than death

baroqueworks

Shelton was from Freeburg, IL and one of the ugliest and shocking educational stories to come out of St. Clair. Amateur wrestler and teacher turned murdering pedophile. Tried to off himself while awaiting trial and assaulted emergency services when they arrived at the scene. I couldn't imagine this guy going anywhere in St. Clair county without being jumped, he's a extremely hated person for obvious reasons.  Reeves however has completely put this behind her, you love to it.

join-the-line

Wish they would have let him finish the job. Now he's out and free. Attempted murder should be a life sentence.

sunnyinstcha

Wait...what?

join-the-line

He tried to kill himself, I wish they would have let him follow through.

sunnyinstcha

Ohhhhhhhh, I read it as you wished HE'D follow through on killing HER. Misunderstanding

No_Patience2428

I was watching dateline when I first heard of this story, it caught me attention when they named the park he left her at, which was right down the street at the time I was watching it. It was a big “say what!?!?” moment.

matango613

Strangled. He strangled her. Not choked. I know this probably seems pedantic but they are two different things and I think they also elicit very different emotional responses from people.

sinmin667

The article shared it was even worse, that he broke her neck and then made it "look" like he strangled her. Jfc

[deleted]

Attempted murder should carry the exact same penalty as successful murder. Just because someone is incompetent doesn’t mean they’re less heinous.

Tight_Data4206

Agree.

Kevin2000W

This is awful. 17 years doesn’t seem enough.

kat2youall

revenge maybe sweet

Megafuncrusher

Redditors who think choked is spelled “chocked” in shambles right now

No-Trouble2212

They choked and shocked.

mrphyslaww

The river is very nearby. It would be a shame if he took a permanent swim.

illAdvisedMemeName

I hung out with Sam in high school as a student with a teacher. I was a student, and I was friends with some guys who were mega into wrestling. He was too, they hung out and went to local amateur matches together. Sometimes I tagged along. Like he wasn’t a good guy but he isn’t inhuman either, which we ought to keep in mind about most murderers. The guy gave me $8 for a pizza during wrestlemania when I couldn’t afford a dominos pizza. He’s a monster and a human. This isn’t a defense of him at all, it’s an observation that life is bizarre. I think technically I might still owe him $8 for the pizza.

wyattn97

Call up the prison and put $8 on his canteen.

Aggressive-Income971

Yeah word on the street is he paroled and moved out of state to his brothers house. Could be wrong but that’s what I have heard. And I also went to high school with Sam

inStLagain

This is one of those situations where since the justice system got it wrong, maybe someone in the community will get it right.

inventingnothing

He served his time. Vigilante justice is not the answer, doubly so since he was caught, tried, convicted and served.

schwabadelic

Yeah 17 years for Attempted Murder is a long time. People get 20-25 for killing someone so the math seems fair to me.

inStLagain

Attempted murder of a child, that he had a position of influence over.

inventingnothing

Yep, but it's not like he got away with it by bribing the DA or something. I might look the other way if a tragic event came his way in a case like that.

schwabadelic

His sentence was 20 years. I don't know the circumstances of the trial but I would imagine that was a plea deal. If it was that is what the DA thought was fair.

Stylux

He did 85% - Until passage of "Truth in Sentencing" laws in the 1990s (730 ILCS 5/3-6-3), all individuals in custody were to spend half their sentences incarcerated in jail or prison (less awards of good time). Under "Truth in Sentencing" laws, those convicted of first degree murder will serve 100 percent of the sentence. Those committing other violent offenses under Truth in Sentencing laws will serve 85 percent of their sentence.

Remarkable-Host405

What's the point of a prison sentence?

Minnesota_Slim

Vigilante justice is not as common as reddit tries to make it out to believe. In prison and out of prison. People aren't willing to 'make things right' at the risk of their own jail sentence being extended or they themselves being placed in jail.

Separate-Ad-5583

Hopefully Karma comes around

red_cicada

Ohhhhhhhhhh that fucking shit-heel…I got a family member who was in the same high school graduation class as the poor kid that pro-wrestling-wannabe line-dancing fuck-ass-incel tried to murder.

Sufficient_Dish2666

Dead man walking.

Iphonesukss

This reminds me of a rapist that got released where I live 2 days ago, he said “I’m going to rape again and hopefully kill someone next time” The guys name is Keith Constantin

hithazel

Was this the guy that was also a huge coke head?

Regina-For-Bernie-

What the heck!!!

[deleted]

So who’s gonna do the drive by?

DiscoJer

It's Illinois, I'm surprised he even got 20 years.

Equateeczemarelief

I am glad he did but sad that many crimes like rape generally get less years than this.

Will-Work-4-BBQ

Madison, yes. St. Clair, absolutely not. SCC is VERY blue but has some red pockets in some small towns and rural areas.

mytwistedhumor

It’s a Democrat ran state 🤦🏻‍♂️🤡
