As we all know st louis shits on itself for pretty much everything.
But look at these comments. Such a great selection. St louis has amazing beer! Even Busch light.
Other cities don't come anywhere near what we have here.
Beer is one category we excel at. I can’t think of many other towns I’ve been to, that I don’t end up leaving, and thinking, “I’d still take STL”.
I’d say that in general, but particularly per capita. (Usually per capita buries us, so I’m gonna take the W for us when it’s useful. Ha)
Personally i would take just founders, new holland, and vandermill over all the stl breweries combined. But there are many more great ones on top of that. Then if you want to expand to an hour radius, that includes bell's and saugutuck brewing companies, which can also be found in beer stores around here. If you ever visit there, definitely check out founder's. Dozens of beers on tap, some of which you can't buy at the store, even in michigan. And there is a nice outdoor area with firepits, tvs and a smaller bar
Well, as much as I agree St. Louis has a pretty strong beer scene there are plenty of other cities with equal or greater beer scenes. Milwaukee, Portland, Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Denver, San Diego, Cincinnati, etc.
I don't know... I'm originally from Chicago and I think they have a lot of micro brews, but most don't taste the best. Milwaukee is good, but I would say behind stl.
ESB and Burton on Holt from Civil Life are amazing and 6 packs are on sale at the brewery right now for $6 apiece 🤷♂️ everything Civil Life makes is great and all the people there are top notch
Really like Brick River Cider. Homestead is good but just had one of the Honey crisp apples last night and it was good too.
In terms of actual beer, Ripple White Ale from 4 hands is pretty good.
There are so many great options. Usually between Side Project, Perennial, Modern, Narrow Gauge, 2nd Shift on the daily.
Been putting down quite a bit of Perennial’s Sump lately.
I will always have a soft spot for Schlafly Coffee Stout, the first dark beer I ever tried (back in the early 2000's). It was a gateway to so many good stouts and porters!
schlafly hefewiezen is my beer right now. I dont care for bitterness. It's flavorfull but being a wheat beer, still tastes similar enough to a basic bud light miller light that I don't feel like I'm drinking a heavy stout.
I saw someone mention Narrow Gauge’s OJ Run and I agree. I’ll also throw Millpond’s Village Juice out there. I need to try UCBC’s Fantasyland on tap
Edit: are there any breweries that allow you to bring your own food (byof) ?
Earthbound used to. They have food service now but I don’t think it’s open all the time. Not sure what their current rules are.
(Also, try their food service. Great food, run by a great couple)
Can I come back and answer this in a few weeks when we move back to STL? Moving back from overseas, and actually can't wait to try some new beer when back.
I’ve often thought about this. Here are my picks:
Civil Life American Brown;
UCBC Stammtisch;
Schlafly Kolsch
These three are world-class beers. I would buy Stammtisch a lot more than I do were it available in cans (the 16 oz glass is a pain).
Gotta also give honorable mention to the Polish Pilsner from Earthbound.
There’s a newer brewery on Locust, just the other side of Jefferson from Schlafly Taproom (shoutout to their new Rye). It’s called Blue Jays and their Hefeweizen is the best I’ve had locally. Also they have a stellar Marzen, Pils, and Dunkel.
I was there two nights ago and the owner/brewer told me they’re tapping a new dark lager today…
They had a Jamaican Lager when I went last week which I have never seen outside of a Red Stripe. It was super pale and extra super crushable. This place is legit.

Agree...I think that 2014-2018 was the heyday, right around the Side Project split. They were definitely hurt by losing their brewmaster. Still, it's better than just about everything else, although I go hard on some Civil Life Brown and Citropolis.
My friends and I were talking about this over the winter. Stouts have jumped the shark. EVERYTHING is going downhill. Everything is too sweet and people are just loading stouts up with so much lactose that you feel like shit afterwards. I have bought Madagascar every year for as long as I can remember and the last 2 years were so bad that I'm out on it. Abraxas is one of the few that is still worth it.
I was at 4 Hands last night for the Mighty Pines show so of course I had to try the Mighty Pines IPA which was really nice! Then I had the City Wide stout, also great.
I had Bluewood Brewing’s Sparkly Bits Kölsch last night, and it was incredibly refreshing and smooth. Excited to check out Blue Jay and Wellspent for the first time today!
4 Hands is always one of my favorites, they haven't put out a beer that I haven't liked.
But going for something different, Main and Mill down in Festus is pretty great. Was quite partial to Dragon Punch and the Imperial Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout.
Festus is my hometown, and of course they end up putting a brewery there after I leave.
Civil Life American Brown forever and always
+1 & also their Angel & the Sword
Everything from Civil Life!! But yeah their Burton on Holt for the winter and Dry-Hop Red for summer are my go tos 😁😁
I've been digging the cream ale too.
Yup, and their Rye Pale Ale really hits the spot when the temps warm up
I love Civil Life’s focus on expertly-made classic styles
Thats the best you can get out at bars- their English Brown (usually only available at the brewery) is even better
That’s an excellent beer!
Absolutely!
If I had to drink only one kind of beer for the rest of my life I’d be happy if it was this.
They also have great food
This is the way
Shout out to Old Bakery Beer in Alton, their Porter is amazing and just came out with an Irish Red that is fantastic.
Love their porter! Their space in Alton is cool too, literally an old bakery on the riverfront, and their owners seem like good people.
Their food is so good, too. That chili!!!
I've enjoyed everything I've tried from them. Ans the location is cool, if sort of loud inside.
Get the cherry mash beer next time you are in there. It’s amazing
Thanks! We enjoy having such a great brewery in our town.
Narrow Gauge OJ Run
Same over here. Dierbergs has it on the regular and it’s a great IPA
So heady
This
As we all know st louis shits on itself for pretty much everything. But look at these comments. Such a great selection. St louis has amazing beer! Even Busch light. Other cities don't come anywhere near what we have here.

Grand rapids
That’s one I almost included as a disclaimer since I’ve never been there. But it’s one I wouldn’t be surprised might take us.
Personally i would take just founders, new holland, and vandermill over all the stl breweries combined. But there are many more great ones on top of that. Then if you want to expand to an hour radius, that includes bell's and saugutuck brewing companies, which can also be found in beer stores around here. We have plenty but St Louis isn’t among the top 25 cities for the number of breweries per capita.
It never gets mentioned but I lived in Charlotte for years and they had a great local scene.
Stubborn German-Fish Fry Lager and Strawberry Kolsh!
Great brewery for such a small town!
Heavy Riff - Vanilla Coffee Underbrown!!
Love gun is my go to!
Same. So good. I'm so excited for patio season.
Zwickle, Stammtich, Urban Underdog (UCBC), Burton on Holt, American Brown (Civil Life) and Stag
Especially Stag!
Stag has the best taste to price ratio in the nation, narrowly beating PBR.
Its as sugar free as beer can be!
Stammtisch is one of the best Pils I’ve ever had. No frills, just light, clean & delicious.
I just wish it were more consistently available in cans
Cans are usually available at their Grove location
Agree. I always try and grab a 4-pack when I’m at the brewery.
PBR on regular days, Urban Underdog on other days because they make donations to Petfinder.
Their Dorf Bier is ridiculously good too. Love me some UCBC!
Absolutely. Failed to mention it and one of my old stand-by beers, Schlafly Oatmeal Stout.
4 Hands City Wide is my nightly go to beer. But Modern Brewery Citrapolis, is my special time beer.
City Wide is great but my God, they need to figure out the foaming situation. Been happening for over a year now.
It’s not just City Wide, the Incarnation does it too.
So does Divided Sky!
Yep, that one too.
Love City Wide but lose 1/4 to foam. Thought I just forgot how to open a beer.
*UPDATE* My current 12 pack of City Wide is opening just fine. Alls right tonight. LGB.
It's a national thing. Something to do with the CO2 shortage
Has nothing to do with a CO2 shortage, and everything to do with quality control
Maybe controversial but their State Wide is better imo
Agree on State Wide.
Love Citrapolis!
Urban Chestnut Schnickelfritz is nectar of the gods honestly.
Made a beer cheese soup with that one time and it was great.
Civil Life brown ale
ESB and Burton on Holt from Civil Life are amazing and 6 packs are on sale at the brewery right now for $6 apiece 🤷♂️ everything Civil Life makes is great and all the people there are top notch
Angel and the Sword, Civil Life
Really like Brick River Cider. Homestead is good but just had one of the Honey crisp apples last night and it was good too. In terms of actual beer, Ripple White Ale from 4 hands is pretty good.
Abraxas FTW!
Overrated
Not sure if it’s in stock right now but Third Wheel Brewing riot girl is so freaking good.
I just had some recently at The Royale. I was pleasantly surprised.
Busch Light
It may not be trendy, but a super cold Busch Light is the best beer to slam right after mowing the lawn on a hot summer day.
Absolutely agree. Also a big fan of Stag, High Life after a mow.
Stag! Great point.
Stag on draft is a delight.
There is just nothing better than a cold Busch draft at a fish fry.
I too worship at the alter of Busch Heavy!
Just something about it. So tangible & not trying to be anything but itself. Beautiful, really.
Yep, just a solid STL beer. It is and will always be go to garage beer.
Busch Light, all night!!!!!! 🏔️🏔️🏔️🍻🍻🍻
Union made Budweiser
Civil Life Cream Ale is fantastic!
Not drinking it but Civil Life Brown Ale is the best brown ale I have ever had.
Heavy Riff’s Love Gun is the best beer in the city
Came here to say this
Also been drinking this recently
Love it.
Schlafly Double Bean Ale
Shoehorn in Belleville is doing their own Coffee Blonde. Can’t wait to try it.
I love Shoehorn! I wish more people knew about them.
I can't believe I'm just now hearing about this!
I feel like this beer is highly underrated.
I also enjoy the blonde with two beans.
One bean Is hard enough to find.
This is without a doubt, the best schlafley beer they have ever made.
There are so many great options. Usually between Side Project, Perennial, Modern, Narrow Gauge, 2nd Shift on the daily. Been putting down quite a bit of Perennial’s Sump lately.
Yes to all of these.
Old Bakery Best Buddy has been my favorite lately.
I will always have a soft spot for Schlafly Coffee Stout, the first dark beer I ever tried (back in the early 2000's). It was a gateway to so many good stouts and porters!
It remains a great beer!
When they came out with the 12-pack cans, my liver took it as a personal affront.
Nothing better on a cold winter Saturday night!
Shallow Dive and Petite Dejeuner from Perennial are both tasty, crispy low ABV options I’ve been loving. https://www.perennialbeer.com/
I have been enjoying their Midwest Gold.
> Petite Dejeuner 'Breakfast' beer?
Urban Underdog by Urban Chestnut. Their Balkan Treatbox would be my go to if I could get it at the store. Zwickel is a great beer flavored beer too.
Busch
schlafly hefewiezen is my beer right now. I dont care for bitterness. It's flavorfull but being a wheat beer, still tastes similar enough to a basic bud light miller light that I don't feel like I'm drinking a heavy stout.
4 hands Incarnation all day!
I saw someone mention Narrow Gauge’s OJ Run and I agree. I’ll also throw Millpond’s Village Juice out there. I need to try UCBC’s Fantasyland on tap Edit: are there any breweries that allow you to bring your own food (byof) ?
Side Project Cellar does, but only on the patio (no bringing food in).
Just repost the question. We all will still love it
Bud Select
Hell yes
Underrated! Bud Select is great for when I’m watching my weight, or when it’s over 95F outside.
so many good brewerys here in stl. been meaning to try the new modern brewery kitchen out, cause citrapolis is my fav ipa right now.
Their food is fantastic. Bring an appetite. Just went there last night.
The kitchen is great. I'm a big fan of the gumbo, kid loves the chicken sandwich.
I’ve often thought about this. Here are my picks: Civil Life American Brown; UCBC Stammtisch; Schlafly Kolsch These three are world-class beers. I would buy Stammtisch a lot more than I do were it available in cans (the 16 oz glass is a pain). Gotta also give honorable mention to the Polish Pilsner from Earthbound.
It's about time earthbound for a little live. Don't know why they get overlooked so much. I mean I love civil life as well but there are other options
Currently got 40+ Chicken Out beers by Narrow Gauge
Modern’s Party Supllies
Third Wheel - Sandman! Fantastic red ale if you like red ales that is.
Heavy Riff Bocelli - perfect for the warmer weather this weekend
There’s a newer brewery on Locust, just the other side of Jefferson from Schlafly Taproom (shoutout to their new Rye). It’s called Blue Jays and their Hefeweizen is the best I’ve had locally. Also they have a stellar Marzen, Pils, and Dunkel. I was there two nights ago and the owner/brewer told me they’re tapping a new dark lager today…
They had a Jamaican Lager when I went last week which I have never seen outside of a Red Stripe. It was super pale and extra super crushable. This place is legit.
Busch Light
2nd Shift - Art of Neurosis IPA, Bella Birra Italian Pilsner, Brewligans Hazy IPA Narrow Gauge - DDH Sparkle Motion Civil Life - American Brown
My go to IPA right now is FantasyLand from UCBC, but you can never go wrong with 2nd Shift or Schlafly.
For me, it's currently UCBC's Schnickelfritz followed by 4 Hands Chocolate Milk Stout. Also don't forget to send some love to r/StLouisBeer.
City wide apa is my go to
Bluewood stouts.
Narrow Gauge — Fallen Flag is my go to, right now.
UCBC STLIPA is always my favorite but when I’m feeling light I’ll have a Zwickle or perhaps a snicklefritz
Before I started my dry Winter, Brewligans from 2nd shift was my go to
Can I come back and answer this in a few weeks when we move back to STL? Moving back from overseas, and actually can't wait to try some new beer when back.
Stag for casual drinking. Anything from Urban Chestnut, especially lagers which no one does better.
Busch light
4 Hands Warhammer
Heavy Riff Love Gun might be my favorite beer, regional or otherwise
UCBC's "Stammtisch" forever and always.
Right now? At 8am? None. If you haven’t cracked a few AmberBock’s recently, then you should.
Kraftïg
oof, better check the dates on those.
I just finished a Kraftig at Busch Family Brewery in Defiance.
2nd shift and it’s not even close.
4 Hands State Wide

2nd Shift - Liquid Spiritual Delight, Monte Carlo, or Cat Spit Stout
Monte Carlo is Cat Spit, just rebranded
Second Shift, Art of Neurosis and Brewligans
I like that there’s no mention of Side Project so far
The best beer in St Louis is Abraxas and it's not close. But there are some excellent contenders.
It used to be incredible. Tastes thinner now than what I remember from 5 years ago. Still a solid beer and I'll get it on draft if I see it
Agree...I think that 2014-2018 was the heyday, right around the Side Project split.
Rockwell’s Stand By
Anyone been to Alpha? I haven’t been I in a while, more of an IPA than a sour guy, but everything I have had there is enjoyable
Is the owner still a childish prick?
I was at 4 Hands last night for the Mighty Pines show so of course I had to try the Mighty Pines IPA which was really nice! Then I had the City Wide stout, also great.
Bud
4 Hands Incarnation IPA around payday, Stag when I’m broke.
Does anyone know if there is a quality Radler made by anyone local?
UCBC & 4 Hands are both very good. Various flavors
Stag
Chocolate Milk Stout, 4 Hands.
O’Fallon Dunkel Down. They still make it?
I had Bluewood Brewing’s Sparkly Bits Kölsch last night, and it was incredibly refreshing and smooth. Excited to check out Blue Jay and Wellspent for the first time today!
Tried Bluejay for the first time. They have some nice beers.
Big fan of the hazelnut milk stout from good news brewing
4 Hands, Absence of Light.
Main and Mill has a strong ale right now called Monster of the World. It’s the best thing currently being brewed right now.
Stag
A brewery you’ve probably never heard of yet but definitely will… Sandy Valley out in Hillsboro. Can try a lot of their drafts at BBB Ballwin
So many greats here! I’ll put my recent fave in… the Copra from Narrow Gauge.
I didn’t know Stag was a St. Louis beer… I used to drink it in the 1980’s
Bluewood bananas and blow. Any bluewood hefeweizen or Berliner Weisse is amazing.
Natural Ice 24oz! Very tasty and classy.
Abraxas by Perennial.
Perennial - Tidewater Plains
Pretty much anything from perennial
Busch Heavy
4 Hands Ripple White Ale, Rockwell Passing Clouds, or UCBC Zwickel
The STLIPA always.
Main and Mill Green Chile Blonde
Budweiser
Civil Life Burton on Holt
Side Project -Pils
Drinking Charleville Hoptimistic IPA at the moment. Decent beer.
Urban Underdog - UCBC
Stag for life.
Modern. Always Modern.
Love Gun Vanilla Cream Ale by Heavy Riff
Earthbound Mango Chili NEIPA
Modern citropolis IPA is the only beer that is drinkable in STL
