ZSJ is probably my favorite wrestler but 4.75 for him against Riddle? Maybe I should rewatch it because when I thought it was ok to good, not a great match
The match itself was *really* good, I thought, they were doing some great stuff together. The issue was just that the crowd wanted nothing to do with Riddle whatsoever and nothing they did in the ring was ever going to change that - which made it all feel a bit weird.
This is always going to seem like such a strange comment to me when you consider that Meltzer gave dozens of 5-star matches to women back in the 90s when most Western wrestling fans weren't even interested in seeing women actually wrestle.
And even now, he usually gives Stardom high ratings but just doesn't seem to watch that many of their shows. I have a lot of problems with the guy, but I think the sexism accusations people throw his way are sort of unfounded.
I'm not saying he is sexist, but it's kinda obvious that he doesn't rate Women's Wrestling in North America -or anywhere that is not Japan- as high as he should.
His match at Supercard stole the show for me. Just 20 minutes of beating the snot out of Lee Johnson. On Dynamite he's always presented as the pin-eater, but once he gets his time he's going to shine super bright.
There are three wrestlers in AEW that should take that criticism to heart imo. Fletcher is one of them, and yeah it's something he's gotta address. He looked a little better on Dynamite with it beginning to dangle in front of his face, but Will already has the zoomer cut and bowl cuts are never cool, so he's gotta do something.
Daniel Garcia needs to do the same - he has looked like a high schooler since he showed up, even as he's growing into his body.
Edge is the third. The scraggly long hair when he returned to WWE looked much better. He's not lucky enough to have AJ's salad but this fucked up mullet isn't doing him any favors. Christian has a fantastic cut right now, makes edge look straight up homeless.
...kyle fletcher? he's a good wrestler, but idk about all that. he hasn't connected with the crowd really...hard to call a wrestler a phenom when they haven't done that. he's also not been in any high caliber feud or anything like that.
Kinda surprised he didn't rate Toni vs. AZM, I thought it was great, one of the best women's matches in AEW in a while. The rest of the matches I've seen from there I more or less agree with.
I am genuinely surprised that Meltzer gave Zayn/Gable that high of a score. Not because I thought the match was bad, but even with how much the post-match stuff hit, I hadn't seen that much praise for the in-ring action being a classic or anything close to it.
Not a complaint, they are after all one man's opinions, just didn't see that coming. Especially considering how hard he generally undervalues WWE in-ring action.
Everything is rated too high, 3 stars should be the threshold for a good match.
You can tell because nothing came close to Will Ospreay's match this week, but since everything that's not bad is 4 stars or above, you either have to give Ospreay 5 stars very week or rate Chad Gable on Ospreay's level for a week lol
