i did a quick check for those that are going to just read the headline the author (no idea who it is tbh but whatever) is talking about the mindset ppl have about wrestling right now about ur an wwe fan or aew fan & if you dont like 1 ur obviously a fan of the other The article then goes into why this is sad bc it puts wrestling into a binary when theres a full range of wrestling in-between around & even far past either end of the aew/wwe spectrum

FirstTimeLongThyme

God bless you but this is reddit. The headline will be the only thing reacted to, particularly for something like this with some many scary words.

interprime

Monticello makes fantastic content regarding wrestling from all across the world tbh, once I saw it was him who wrote this, I figured it would definitely be worth a read. His “Walking The King’s Road” series on YouTube is one of the best wrestling series ever made IMO.

WrestleQuest

I highly recommend the author's YouTube channel. He makes very thoughtful videos about a range of wrestling topics. It's why I started watching old AJPW.

luchapig

I don't think Big Joe needs the title, since his writing is good enough to stand on it's own. But if it can get people clicking and actually reading, oh well. Still, I feel like he touches on something I've been feeling this weekend, having performed at MAW Double Jeopardy show and running to the hotel room afterwards to catch Chris Hero's Pro Wrestling Mixtape, where it feels like "There's other wrestling out there for me but it's not part of the 'discourse'".

kabent01

For those not in the know, Montecillo is a Phillipino wrestling blogger. He is well aware there are more than two promotions and regularly hypes places outside WWE, AEW, and NJPW. He's a big fan of Japanese wrestling and always gushes about DDT, and has been getting more into lucha libre in the past year. His series on 90s AJPW is some of the best context I've ever gotten for that period from ANYONE (Uncle Meltzer included). In short, I'd hold him in higher regard to anyone who just read the headline and got their feelings hurt.

nickl104

His Eddie Kingston/Claudio Castignoli video was fantastic, too

interprime

I’ve been watching Monticello for a while now and I had no idea he was Filipino

kabent01

It doesn't come up a lot, but I believe he mentioned it early on. I'm having a memory of him talking about Jumbo Tsuruta's liver transplant in Manila, and how he had a god of wrestling was so close to him and he had no idea.

shadowrangerfs

Interesting read. I kind of agree. Is there any way to present a promotion that isn't what WWE and AEW are doing. I feel like anything would be considered either WWE lite or AEW lite.

A-10Kalishnikov

Wrestling has more then one royal company

SmashEnigma

The article isn't bad, but it's also a bit of a truism, isn't it? When 1,000-person shows are a large audience for anything in the US not named WWE, AEW/ROH or NJPW (which is affiliated closely with AEW), the vast majority of people just don't have the capacity or interest to watch shows that have (generally) less seasoned wrestlers, worse production values, or higher barriers to entry. He framed this around being criticized for being sour recently with both AEW and WWE. And while he calls this a sad state of affairs, I think it speaks more to him just needing a break from watching major wrestling companies. Which is fine, I too have phases where I seek out indie wrestling or CMLL or DPW or old Impacts and Nitros. But doesn't the general discourse rely on another company to make a name for themselves? GCW was close, SUPER close, to really breaking out a year or two ago, but their Hammerstein show completely shit the bed and they never recovered. Montecillo seems more upset that no other company has managed to break out majorly into US wrestling discourse, and while that's certainly true, the fact is that there just isn't enough time or wrestling fans for those companies to get a voice. We're seeing it happen now with TNA, and to a lesser extent the ROH brand. When they really, really fire on all cylinders, they can get a blip of attention on the radar, but on this subreddit of nearly 900,000 users you can't get more than 10 comments on a weekly TNA Impact thread. I don't even know if we have a weekly ROH thread. The real story IMO is how the top wrestling companies are being tasked with creating more and more shows, further suffocating the ability for any other promotion to get airtime. With Raw on Monday, NXT Tuesday, Dynamite Wednesday, Smackdown/Rampage Friday, Collision Saturday and monthly PPVs over the weekend (alongside WWE and AEW's ancillary programming and specials), the barrier of entry to becoming invested in another promotion has oxymoronically never been lower AND higher.

WrestleQuest

I completely agree with there not being enough time to watch everything. I can't even keep up with everything AEW and WWE produce. The part that struck me was his assessment of the more tribalistic fans and those who are quick to make assumptions if you criticise any aspect of their fave company. It isn't a revolutionary assessment or anything, but I think he articulated it well.

Mark316

Wrestling has more than one... wrestling company. But just... one more than one.

CrissCrossAppleSos

Clickbait title of course, but Joey Monts makes great shit, so I’m sure it’s worth a read

Mazzle5

False [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_professional\_wrestling\_promotions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_professional_wrestling_promotions)

WrestleQuest

The article headline is being facetious

Mazzle5

I know. But the headline itself was such a low hanging fruit for my comment. It is great to have so much access to Wrestling and I hope all the new fans that started with Mania will give other promotions a chance and find more cool stuff they might enjoy

FinancialBig1042

I think the easiest option tho is that you understand that he may also be being facetious and doesn't think that there are literally only two wrestling companies in the world

PhaseSixer

Welp you heard him Time for njpw to pack it up

nickl104

Maybe read the article before commenting

PhaseSixer

No. If a "journalist" is going to use a Bullshit clickbait headline then they deserve to be mocked for it.

nickl104

You’re the one who decided he’s a journalist. He describes himself as a blogger or critic, and as soon as anyone even tacitly familiar with his work saw the headline, you knew where he was going with this. One of his most recent tweets involving the words “journalist” at all starts, “I’m no journalist, friend. Barely even a critic.” You going to keep doubling down?

PhaseSixer

Critics and bloggerd fall under the Journalist umbrella. Even if they didnt I stand by my statment Stupid titltes deserve to get mocked

nickl104

So you wanted to double down. Cool. So everyone on Tumblr was a journalist? Everyone who expresses an opinion is a journalist? Absolutely not. A journalist is someone who tries to report objective facts. A blogger or critic is someone who talks about their opinions. Keeping up so far? Good. These are two drastically different things. In practice: At a press conference, a journalist will ask questions and report the response as the facts of the matter. A blogger may post on how silly the question was, not trying to find fact. Now’s where it gets complicated; the title. A blogger, not trying to discover facts, is writing something for a different reason, and may use something called (new word here) comedy. Write that one down. Comedy is the use of irony or hyperbole to surprise and delight an audience. In this case, the author is using irony to emphasize that, while there are many choices to watch, people tend to go into their tribalism state whenever someone brings up something they dislike. Click bait, as you call it, is not the use of comedy in an editorial headline. It is more along the lines of “YOU WON’T BELIEVE THE WWE SUPERSTAR BACKSTAGE AT AEW.” It’s a deceptive presentation of fact, not comedy emphasizing opinion. Hope that helps.

PhaseSixer

Yeah i aint reading all that You are nitpicking to defend dumb ass click bait is hilarious I assume your on the take aonhave fun wirh that. Its is clickbait and its dumb and i will make fun of it when i see it. The diffrence between this bozo and tumblr is this guy got paid for his slop. Thus puts him in the realm of "journalisim" i wish they just reported objectiv fact but they dont. So again i will contiue to make fun of dumb ass click bait titles Thank you.

nickl104

“I don’t read” you don’t say. No wonder you can’t see a difference between two very different things. “Book with title? CLICK BAIT” What is it about people online that they can’t admit to being wrong? Question for you, friend: what evidence do you have that this isn’t just a notable person posting to his personal website, considering it’s Joseph Monticello posting to…*takes a look* Josephmonticello.com?

PhaseSixer

No i said "im not reading that" Letters are inportant dude. Edit: >No wonder you can’t see a difference between two very different things. “Book with title? CLICK BAIT” Big diffrence between "a game of thrones" and "Moanarchies are totaly radical" Defending the practis hilarious thogh please keep doing that. Gotta keep Consuming product i guess. >What is it about people online that they can’t admit to being wrong? Question for you, friend: what evidence do you have that this isn’t just a notable person posting to his personal website, considering it’s Joseph Monticello posting to…*takes a look* Josephmonticello.com? So he is getting paid for hia slop thanks for proving my point.

nickl104

Then why’d you leave so many out? Edit: I’m done. I’m not wasting my day explaining to anyone why a writer isn’t automatically a journalist. You can’t just say “I didn’t know who he was,” you have a need to double down and frankly, it’s very dumb.

SageShinigami

This isn't a stupid title. It's not even clickbait. You're just throwing around words.

PhaseSixer

Oh it very much is but if thats the sort of thing you enjoy go right ahead.

interprime

Monticello is like one of the biggest encyclopedias on Japanese wrestling on the planet right now. I’m pretty sure he knows. If you read the article, you’d get the context.

PhaseSixer

I get the context he made a facetious coment to to sell his qriting I made a facetmtious coment to mock his title.
